The study (originally prepared as a paper for a learned conference entitled "Polish and Ukrainian Literature of the 19th and 20th Centuries: a Fellowship of Difficult Experiences" and organized in 1994 by the Institute of Literary Research of the Polish Academy of the Sciences and the Institute of Slavic Literature with the collaboration of the T.H. Szewczenko Institute of Literature of the Ukrainian Academy of the Sciences in Kiev; neither the paper nor other conference materials have been published) is a review of the forms in which Russian-Ukrainian theme was present in Polish literature over the ten centuries of common history which Poles and Ukrainians shared. In turn the author discusses the place and role of themes and "Roxolan" motives in the Old Polish writing of the 11th-18th centuries, the main directions of interest as well as creative achievements in the given period of the representatives of the broadly understood 19th-century "Ukrainian school" in the Polish literature of romanticism. Eventually the author dwelt in particular on the writing of such writers as Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz, Józef Łobodowski, Stanisław Vincenz and Włodzimierz Odojewski − the most important attempts at "taming" the historical events of the 20th century as regards the Polish-Ukrainian relations between the First World War and the effects brought about by the years after the Second World War. Summing up, the author formulates several conclusions of a general character concerning the socio-cultural influence each given phenomenon may exert on the current stage of the Polish-Ukrainian relations, a stage which originated in the events of 1989-91 years.

This paper reviews the methods applied in the studies on Old-Polish religious literature. The author is sceptical about the usefulness of historical and literary analyses in the studies on the actual religious attitudes. She states that the methods of the history of literature serve mainly to unveil the sources and structures of religious culture; she stresses that the use of intertextual methods is particularly effective in the most recent works. She also emphasises that need for a better recognition of the specific genres of Old-Polish religious literature and the types of writing (sermons, postillas, hagiographies, and religious epic), and she distances herself from such categories (more and more often found in studies) as metaphysical, meditative, and mystic literature. She points at difficulties in their definition, and stresses that their scope if blurred.

What Does It Mean to Be a Polish Art Critic Today? The discussion on the topic of contemporary literary criticism has been contained within two symbolic poles: the article What does it mean today to be a Polish writer by Karol Maliszewski written in 1995 and What does it mean today to be a Polish authoress, written in 2008 by Igor Stokfiszewski. The former paper, which is characteristic of the critical-literary awareness of the 90s of the 20th century, promotes literature that is far from being involved and is based on an individual writer’s gesture; the latter, on the other hand, belongs to one of the better known critical projects of recent years and it promotes a political turnaround proclaiming literature that is engagé and one that is treated as an instrument of social critique. The project of literary criticism is at the same time an expressive and controversial proposition and its significance also consists in the fact that it became a strong impulse which mobilized literary criticism to define and defend other conceptions of literature and criticism and in this way contribute to a fundamental debate in the milieu of critics.

Rev. Prof. Marian Wolniewicz is one of the most outstanding contemporary biblical scholars of the Poznań theological milieu. From his youth until the end of his life (t 2005) he wrote personal lyric poetry. A selection of his poems was published posthumously by the Theological Faculty of Adam Mickiewicz University in a volume titled A Spiritual Diary in Verse edited by Feliks Lenort with an introduction by Zdzisław Grzegorski, a theologian and scholar of Polish literature. The poems predominantly express man's religious experience through impressions of the moment and feelings evoked by sights of the landscape, but the lyric subject does not define himself through realities characteristic of a priest and theologian. In his poetic attitude Rev. Marian Wolniewicz was inspired by the poetry of Wojciech Bąk and the French symbolists. Similarly to Stephane Mallarme he fulfilled the concepts of subsequent poems as a continuation of one single oeuvre which would finish with the death of the author. His last poetic notation was also his last attempt to translate a verse from the Gospel according to John.

Literature, Feminism, Criticism – Other Constellations? In her article the authoress outlines the issues concerning the relation between feminism, literary criticism and modern literature. She poses some questions concerning the prose oeuvre of contemporary Polish women authors as well as the social contexts and aesthetic strategies associated with it. What proved to be important here were also issues allowing reflection on the change of literary-critical and historical and literary discourses inspired by feminist thought, as well as issues allowing to record the losses and gains resulting from the entanglement of feminist literary criticism in mass communication and the results of the „cultural turnaround” of feminist literary studies.

Political but Non-party In recent years, involvement has become almost the main topic of literary life; this is due largely to the fact that, firstly, there has emerged a group of authors who manifest not only their political views, but also their obligations; secondly due to the fact that some critics appeal for a „political turnaround” in literature and thirdly, due to the popularization of the thought of several world philosophers, with Jacques Rancier at the helm, who try to extract the political out of the aesthetic, and fourthly, as a consequence of the reactivation of old languages – Marxist one on the left side and conservative-identity one on the right. The resistance which these tendencies have aroused in some milieus is associated with the conviction that the discovery of the political possibilities of literature and its interpretation leads (or will lead) to its literariness, utilitarization, subordination to the languages that dominate on the public scene. The author of the article shares the above fears; he is of the opinion that literature should rather be an instrument for undermining instruments, pragmatism and sociologism by means of a language that does not belong to the territory of defined discourse; whereas the most interesting aspect of its political nature consists in its ability to resist politics.

The article presents detailed analyses of the irregular sound organisation of the two wings of Polish interwar avant-garde poetry: futurism and the constructivist group Awangarda Krakowska. The starting point of the research is the ‘musicality’ of symbolist poetry, expanded and overcome by the avant-gardists. Members of both groups paid special attention to the acoustics of poetry creatively employing devices such as paro-nomasia, onomatopoeia, alliteration, anaphora etc. However, the futurist practice proved more complicated, more diverse and less consistent (sometimes even dada-like). The phonostylistics of Awangarda Krakowska, although still highly innovative, was more ‘disciplined’, logical and focused on motivating the metaphors by sounds. The experi-ments of both groups were revived in the Polish post-war poetry (especially in the cur-rents such as poezja lingwistyczna and the present neolingwizm). It is usually impossible to discriminate between the futurist and constructivist inspirations in the post-war works: sound concepts typical of futurism tend to be used in a more logical, consistent and metaphor-centred way. Hence, the author introduces the term “new musicality” refer-ring to the specific and still vivid poetics of sound, first employed by the Polish avant-gardists.

Article focuses on interpretation of the last novel written by Wiesław Myśliwski Traktat o łuskaniu fasoli. The author presents biography of hero — musician and homo viator. Novel describes his life and its connections with Polish history in XXth century. Above all, it presents a reflections on the role of music in culture after II World War. In his Traktat... Myśliwski performs anti-logocentric turn — music is created as a sphere of art which has power of salvation: it could save human being life from destruction and could stop destruction of rudimental senses formed European culture.

Opis:
The text depicts the process of penetration of an autonomised advertising slogan, merging with language elements characterising the sacrum sphere, into the language of literature. A variety of language based on a play on contradictions comes into being. The play is woven with opposing types of messages which are rooted in human everyday life. One of them refers to elements culled from the sacrum sphere (settling on the side of language matrices which are rooted in tradition most strongly) while the other ones are the diction of mass media and the language of advertising (a relatively new message but also widely brought to attention and easily identified). The phenomenon proves the attempts made by creators to make up a new strategy deciding about the power of artistic expression and also the will to show information pollution, within which a contemporary individual functions, through the language of literature. The cited works sketch an interesting feature of contemporary culture in which the semantics of the term sacrum has come full circle, starting to mean according to the former etymology and the meaning scope encompassing both what is sacred and what is labeled as impious (cursed, profanum). The observed phenomenon may be regarded as a form of deliberate scandalisation performed by means of offering the recipient a type of message and means of expression striking at a certain social taboo.

phenomenon. The translators of the poems of the Nobel Prize-winning Polish poetess are mainly Lithuania’s most prominent poets and translators. In addition to poems, there also appeared translation of the book review column entitled Lektury nadobowiązkowe (“Non-compulsory reading”). Nobelist’s poems are published in the literary and cultural magazines “Literatūra ir menas” (“Literature and Art”) and “Šiaurės Atenai” (“Northern Athens”). Her poems are often published in the original language as well as translation. However, there is no serious academic discourse on translated Szymborska’s literary works in Lithuania.

Miłosz’s volume Światło dzienne (Daylight, 1953) is conventionally read by critics as political poetry deeply engaged with history. The article offers a corrective to this traditional reading by interpreting the volume as interplay of European and American influences. As a European poet, Miłosz had experienced the violent demise of ideals at the foundation of the Old World. Światło dzienne is, therefore, at one level, an elegiac volume in which both persons and ideas are mourned. On the other hand, to the extent that America continues for Miłosz the noble ideas abandoned in Europe, he cannot accept what he regards as their misguided or perverse incarnations. This explains the emotional climate of the whole volume, with its dominant mood of disappointment, anger and refusal of reconciliation. Światło dzienne is American in its outlook in taking seriously America’s status as a superpower and its influence on the future direction of global history. It is anti-American, however, in identifying America’s perceived failures to live up to the post-war challenge for human civilization in general and the consequent dangers. The article intends to assess Miłosz’s debt to English-language poetry in this volume in light of his personal notes from his reading and translation work at the time.
