The article Sculptor and philosopher deals with the Romanian thinker Constantin Noica’s interpretations of Constantin Brâncuşi’s work. These interpretations are presented with regard to Noica’s philosophical concepts, in particular his reflections on Romanian culture and the sense of being manifested within it. Of fundamental importance in his interpretations is the category of becoming within being – the most important idea developed by Noica and which he applied in many fields of philosophy.

The author discusses the reception of Olga Tokarczuk’s works in Romania on the basis of translations, critical essays and radio and press interviews. Olga Tokarczuk is the best-known contemporary writer from Central Europe in Romania, thanks to numerous translations (almost all of her novels have been translated into Romanian, except The Books of Jacob, due to be published next year). An important role in the dissemination of her works has been played by the Polirom publishing house in Iași, which published a special series devoted to Tokarczuk. The quality of the translations of the Polish novelist’s texts is also high. Particular credit for this goes to Cristina Godun, a specialist in Polish Studies, who has managed to render the peculiarities of Tokarczuk’s narrative and style in Romanian. The paper also briefly discusses the difficulties encountered during the translation of Tokarczuk’s texts.

The article discusses several “curiosities of American spirit” on the basis of the volume of essays A View of San Francisco Bay: the duality of Americans (based on hesitation between success and despair), nihilism noticed especially among the representatives of the younger generation, arrangement of spatial hierarchy, tearing America into two hostile camps (pure, noble minds and simple people’s minds), arrogance of one’s own “I” (being the fundamental cause of great achievements in technology and science), dissonance between biblical spirit and technological progress etc. Besides their cognitive value, Miłosz’s essays are also a great lesson of imagology on America perceived by the comparatist’s eyes.

In the last 25 years, polemics about Constantin Noica multiplied. For a significant part of the Romanian intellectual élite, he is an exceptional philosopher, maybe the most representative of the Romanian culture in the 20th century. For a little one, his work and his activity represent the “embodiment” of all the critical problems of Romanian culture in the last century. A few scholars criticize philosopher’s ideological options, toward authoritarianism and totalitarianism. In my paper, I present an intellectual profile of the philosopher by revisiting his ontology. I strongly agree with Ion Ianoşi, who stressed that the philosophy of Noica is mainly based on the traditionalism. From this perspective of interpretation, Noica remains a controversial author, but reveals himself as one of the most consistent Romanian philosopher from the last century, who preserved his views till the end of his life.

The author analyzes the contribution of the Romanian Polonists to studying Polish literature on the basis of theories and methodologies that are characteristic of comparative studies, developed within the Romanian area (T. Vianu, Al. Dima, G. Calinescu, N. Manolescu). Thanks to the comparative method, Romanian specialists have extended their interpreting perspective by voicing original ideas on motifs, themes, influences, parallelisms etc. that are present in the works of Polish and Romanian writers. Special attention has been granted to comparative studies about Mickiewicz – Asachi, Sienkiewicz – Sadoveanu, Reymont – Re-breanu. In conclusion, the comparative method becomes a basic tool in the critical approach of foreign Polonists.

The Speech Learning Model states that the process of equivalence classification reduces the accuracy of a similar L2 sound by forming an L1-L2 merged category whereas new sounds tend to be pronounced with greater accuracy due to lack of perceptual linkage with an L1 category (Flege 1995). We found further support for this differentiation in the production of the canonical schwa as a new sound by L1 Polish/L2 English speakers and as a similar sound by L1 Romanian/L2 English speakers, who produced an L1-L2 schwa merger. The aim of the current paper is to further investigate the production accuracy of new and similar sounds. First of all, a control group that consisted of native Romanian speakers was used to analyse the L1-L2 similar sound merger. Secondly, a measure of overall pronunciation ability based on foreign accent ratings (FAR) was included. The results confirm that production accuracy for new sounds is much greater than for similar sounds which form merged diaphones with the equivalent L1 sound. As a result, neither sound is produced on target when compared to a native speaker reference. Moreover, new sound production accuracy benefits much more from an increase in general proficiency and overall L2 pronunciation ability.

In this article, we analyse the question of the willing withdrawal from an offence by the offence organiser and create a clear, well-grounded scientific basis aiming to combine the provisions of the criminal law with the practice of applying the norms of law. As a result of the study, the legal nature of the voluntary withdrawal from a crime by its organiser was established, and the features of the voluntary withdrawal were confirmed. W niniejszym artykule Autorzy dokonują analizy zagadnienia dobrowolnego odstąpienia z popełnienia przestępstwa przez organizatora przestępstwa i przedstawiają jasną, dobrze uzasadnioną podstawę naukową zmierzającą do połączenia przepisów prawa karnego z praktyką stosowania norm prawa. W wyniku przeprowadzonych badań ustalono charakter prawny dobrowolnego odstąpienia od popełnienia przestępstwa przez jego organizatora oraz potwierdzono główne cechy czynu. In diesem Artikel analysieren die Autoren die Frage des freiwilligen Verzichts auf die Begehung einer Straftat durch den Organisator der Straftat und legen eine klare, fundierte wissenschaftliche Grundlage vor, die darauf abzielt, die Bestimmungen des Strafrechts mit der Praxis der Anwendung von Rechtsnormen zu verknüpfen. Als Ergebnis der Untersuchung wird die Rechtsnatur des freiwilligen Verzichts auf die Begehung einer Straftat durch den Organisator festgestellt und die Hauptmerkmale der Tat werden bestätigt. В данной статье авторы анализируют вопрос добровольного отказа от совершения преступления организатором преступления и представляют четкую, обоснованную научную базу, направленную на связывание положений уголовного закона с практикой применения правовых норм. В результате исследования установлена правовая основа добровольного отказа от совершения преступления его организатором и подтверждены основные признаки данного деяния.

This article examines the concept of Byzantinism that Julien Benda employed in his book La France Byzantine. In the fin-de-siècle European sensibility, Byzantinism was transferred from political to literary level, but Benda created an epistemological break when he asserted in his book that Byzantinism is literature in its normal function. Furthermore, of Byzantinist character is especially the modern literature (e.g. Valéry or Mallarmé). Thus, labeling modern literati as Byzantinist writers served as a critical tool for Benda, who condemned the degradation of modern intellectuals into clerks. This transformation of literary normality affected also pure thought as is manifested in the ambiguous manner of expressing their ideas by modern thinkers (this being a mixture of idealism and apocryphal thinking, which renders ideas rather abstractions than instruments of rationality). An example of such a Byzantinist use can be found in the manner Emmanuel Levinas exploited Husserl’s phenomenology. Finally, Benda engaged in a discussion with Paulhan’s view that literary philosophy is a form of critical terror. The position of Benda is that of a rationalist, whereas Paulhan is a thinker who focuses on the use of language. For Constantine Tsatsos (1899–1987), on the other hand, a Greek philosopher and author of a philosophical novel entitled Dialogues in a Monastery (1974), the Byzantine moment is a part of great continuity of Greek culture, which is characterized by various structures in its period of long duration. One of these is the synthesis of Hellenism and Christianity that can be seen in Byzantium, where the transposition of the philosophical (Platonic) Eros to the mystical one plays a major role. This development is of paramount importance not only for the whole European culture but also for all questions of beauty and morality. The present paper concludes with a brief discussion of Richard Rorty’s account of pragmatic reason, which makes it possible to show how contemporary philosophy can be placed in the context of the debate about Byzantinism.

The Nd2Fe14B cylindrical magnets were treated with water solutions of alkali, acid, and salt. Mössbauer spectroscopy was applied to study the composition and properties of the surface material of the treated magnets. It is shown that the main phase of the permanent Nd2Fe14B magnet partly decomposes. The released α-Nd at the grain boundaries interacts with water and forms neodymium hydroxide matrix, and the released Fe diffuses into it. The presence of Fe-Nd(OH)3 is refl ected in the paramagnet doublet in the Mössbauer spectra of treated neodymium magnets.

Aim. At-risk individuals have many forms, often it is the two opposing sides of a personality which can ultimately implement risky behaviour only to accept an individual into a peer group. Concept. The risky behaviour of young people and children currently associated with a  consumer society aggravated by the pandemic situation Covid-19 is the subject of interest in professional as well as scientific research of various professionals who work in different areas of life. Methods. This study deals with the risks, social, but also individual consequences of at-risk youth, which occur at all levels of society. In the study, we proceeded in an analytical-synthetic way, interpreting and ascertaining the results of various other scientific and professional studies by foreign authors who deal with the given issue. Results. The study confirms that risky behaviour requires a constant approach to educating a young person through not only the family but also the school environment, which allows a new perspective on risky youth behaviour.  However, it is very important to integrate young people into society to see the risks of their behaviour not only for themselves. but for a narrower or wider community. Conclusion. The scientific articles and contributions offered in this study point out the risky behaviour of young people, the risks of behaviour not only for individuals but also for groups, it points out the possible causes, reasons, but also consequences of risky behaviour.

To determine oak tree sensitivity to climate fluctuations as a precipitation predictor, we eliminated monthly climate data and computed the growth-precipitation correlation using mean daily values calculated in time intervals. Precipitation from March through May is the primary limiting factor in intra-annual tree-ring growth for Quercus robur L. in southern Romania. Bootstrap correlations between the residual series and monthly average precipitation showed a positive dependence (r = 0.4). Using CLIMTREG software and daily climate data, we obtained correlation values of (0.6) and a better understanding of on-going tree radial growth. We found that the oak growth process is active during two distinct periods in the study area, December 22th–February 10th (earlywood) and March 04th–June 13th (latewood). For the studied oak tree population, the correlation with climate was positive with respect to precipitation and negative with respect to temperature. This indicates that annual tree-ring formation was influenced by the precipitation regime and frequency and by the degree of drought. These results also indicate that different behaviours occur among the examined earlywood and latewood under the same climatic conditions, which were then analysed.
