Opis:
In Poland, one of the industries that has to take action to increase innovation is mining, as it is still a strategic branch of the Polish industry. The analysis of the structure of expenditure on mining innovation shows that there are innovations in the product sphere and solutions related to mechanical coal mining, while the sphere of widely understood management is omitted and expenditure on this field is negligible. Bearing in mind, among other things, the above challenges facing the Polish economy in the near future and in particular Polish coal industry, the author of the article attempted to analyse the most important challenges facing the mining industry in Poland. This article will attempt to answer the question in which direction innovative measures should be taken in Polish hard coal mining industry to allow for the development of this industry.

Opis:
Coal-mining wastes are used for engineering purposes mainly as a building material for hydraulic and road embankments, as well as land levelling. Determination of compressibility and shear strength parameters is indispensable to determine the usefulness of coal-mining wastes for the above mentioned purposes. Due to the coarse-grained character of minestone, testing their geotechnical parameters should be conducted in situ (test loads) or in the laboratory in medium and large-size apparatus. The paper presents results of compressibility tests on unburnt coal-mining waste from Anna mine in the Upper Silesian Region. They were carried out in a prototypical medium-size oedometer (h = d = 374 mm), constructed in the Geotechnical Laboratory of the Department of Soil Mechanics and Earth Structures, Agricultural University of Kraków. The tests aimed at the determination of the influence of compaction and saturation of coal-mining wastes on the process of their consolidation, as well as on the magnitudes of settlement and compression moduli. Initial moisture content of the samples (close to the optimum one) was constant and compaction index changed (from IS = 0.88 to IS = 1.00); some samples were saturated prior to the loading. As a result of the tests, it was found that the slightly compacted wastes (IS = 0.90) are significantly susceptible to saturation, whereas more compacted wastes (IS = 0.95 and 1.00) are insignificantly susceptible to it. High compaction of coal-mining wastes has significant influence on the more even course of consolidation process and decrease of settlement. It is essential in case of using wastes for construction of embankments, especially those which are subject to the influence of water, for example embankments of ash ponds or flotation slurries. In that case the wastes should be compacted to the maximum extent at the optimum moisture content.

Research background: Due to increasing economic and sector risk coal mining in Europe is treated as a declining industry. In post-transition economies such approach is a threat for energy security and local and regional economic development. Nowadays, coal mining survival in Central-East Europe is additionally threatened by accumulative global risk factors, especially by price differentiation and shale gas revolution in United States of America. Revealed circumstances require deepen research and diagnosis in the area of risk and corporate management in mining enterprises in Central-East Europe. Purpose of the article: The main aim of the article is to assess industrial risk in coal mining in Central-East Europe. The research is divided into three parts. In the first one the situation of coal mining in Central-East Europe is characterized. It is the basis for selection of the countries for the detailed analysis. In the second part the industrial risk factors are assessed and described. Finally, in the third part their influence on financial results in the examined mining enterprises is evaluated. In the summary the international comparison is made and general assumptions for risk and corporate management are formulated. Methods: In the article a risk checklist is used to identify the economic and industrial risk factors. To determine their influence on financial results on the first stage of research Pear-son’s coefficients are used. Than regression functions are developed. The data are collected on the basis of public statistics and financial statements of the examined mining enterprises. Findings & Value added: On the basis of research results it may be stated that there are only a few countries in Europe in which mining enterprises still operate as separate economic units and all of them have experienced serious financial troubles in the last years. Risk intensification contributed mostly to revenues reduction and negative financial results.

The article looks at the government’s policy towards the hard coal mining sector in Poland in the years 2015–2021 in the context of the climate policy of the European Union, and the increase in demand for energy resources of the Polish economy. Despite the fact that for several years hard coal mines in Poland have been generating losses, they continue to operate. For political reasons, they could count on government support. Poland’s obligations towards the EU have made the transition from hard coal in the power industry inevitable. The article discusses the assumptions of the government’s mine restructuring plan until 2049. Its implementation depends on the decision of the European Commission on granting public aid to the liquidated mines.

Opis:
The circular economy is the economic model that has been applied for a long time in the world. This model is applied at all three levels: micro (enterprise-level), intermediate (industry level, industrial zone level), and macro-level (local level, regional level, or national level). Vietnamese Coal Mining Industry has been having important contributions to the socio-economic development of Vietnam. However, this industry also causes lots of issues about environmental pollution. In the context of resource depletion, environmental pollution and the cost of exploiting and processing increases with the deep exploiting process; the tastes of utilizing resources, minimizing environmental pollution, and creating more value-added for this industry are inevitable requirements. Because of the tasks, applying the circular economy model into this industry (both intermediate and micro-level) is the urgent solution for the sustainable development of the Vietnamese Coal Mining Industry. The paper uses a combination of research methods such as theoretical research, case study research, statistical data analysis, etc., to propose the circular economy model for the Vietnamese Coal Mining Industry and some solutions to deploy this model into the industry's operations towards sustainable development.

The purpose of the research was to raise the level of environmental safety in the coal mining regions by using combustion metamorphic rocks of the spoil banks, which were reinforced with the modified wastes of the polymer production, namely carbonous binders, as a man-made raw material for the base courses of roads. The environmentally friendly technology for the construction of the base course of roads from layers of combustion metamorphic rock mixtures (CMRM) with different largest granule size of crushed stone was developed. The bulk density and compressive strength in a cylinder on a hydraulic press were used as the criteria for determining the rational granulometric composition. The practicability of reinforcing combustion metamorphic rocks with coal tar, which is a modified waste of the polystyrene production, i.e polystyrene dust, was shown. The technology of preparation of the tar and polystyrene binder (TPB) was developed. The optimal concentration of polystyrene dust in the organic binder of the coke production and the time of their combination (as the optimal areas of admissible values of variation factors X1, X2, X3) were determined using the method of mathematical planning of the three-factor experiment (5 optimization parameters). The coefficients of the regression equations were calculated using the least squares method. Regression equations are a second-degree polynomial. The three-dimensional diagrams “parameters of system optimization – variance factors” were calculated and drawn. In accordance with the obtained regression equations, the response surface was designed in a three-dimensional space. The areas of admissible values of optimal variance factors correspond to the limit values of the response functions.

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) in mining areas has increased momentum especially in countries like India where it has been made mandatory. The primary objective of this paper is to document actual social challenges of mining in field areas and find out how companies in the coal sector can work in a systematic manner to achieve uplift of affected communities. The first part of the paper draws evidence from three different bodies of literature, i.e. CSR and coal mining, capacity building and livelihood generation in mining areas. We try to converge the literature to propose a novel framework for livelihood generation work through capacity building with the help of CSR investments. The paper also documents a live case of planning and the implementation of capacity building activities in Muriadih coal mines in the Jharkhand state of India and offers lessons to both business and policy makers. The proposed framework has only been experimented in a local context, yet has the potential to be replicated in other mining areas.

Opis:
Long-term surface mining and land cover/use changes have been evidenced to have a critical relationship. This study investigates the evolution of this relationship for Ptolemais (Northern Greece) coal mining area during the period 1990-2018. In this context, satellite images, Corine data, and mining maps were used. A relative spatial indicator (RSI) was adopted to describe the mineral land areas and ArcGIS tools to define the land cover and use changes. Furthermore, mine operation parameters were statistically analyzed concerning land cover/use areas. The study revealed that areas described as “mineral extraction sites” present a strong correlation with “non-irrigated arable land” and “transitional woodland”. From 1990 to 2018, the total forest area was increased by three times, mainly as a result of the dumping sites’ geometry. Additionally, the mine operation parameters are well correlated with the active mining area, and more specifically, there is a linear relationship between the stripping ratio and the ratio of lignite production to active mining area. In the general case, the calculated annual changing rate of land use types may contribute to the prediction of future land reclamation uses and, consequently, to land reclamation planning in due time.

Opis:
The primary objective of the present paper is an attempt at evaluating the influence of sub-level caving operations on the slope stability of a still-functioning open pit coal mine in Vietnam. Initially, various methods of predicting the impact of under- ground mining on surface stability are discussed. Those theoretical considerations were later utilized in the process of constructing a Flac-2D-software-based numerical model for calculating the influence of underground operation on the deformation and possible loss of stability of an open pit slope. The numerical analysis proved that the values of open pit slope displacements were affected mainly by underground exploitation depth, direction of operation (i.e., from one slope to the other) and the distance from the slope plane. Real geomechanical strata parameters from the Vietnamese coal basin of Cam Pha were used in the modeling process. The paper is, therefore, a critical review of the hitherto proposed methods of predicting the impact of underground operation (UG) on open pit mining (OP), illustrated with selected examples of case studies on OP-UG interaction, followed by an original experiment based on numerical modeling method. This is first such study for the genuine conditions of the coal mining in Vietnam. The obtained results, however, should not be generalized due to a highly specific character of the analyzed phenomenon of mining-induced surface deformation. The practical implications of the study may occur extremely useful in the case of an UG-OP transition. Such a transition is often necessary for both technical and economical reasons, as in some coal basins open pit operations at greater depths occur unfeasible, which calls for a proper selection of parameters for a planned underground operation.

This article presents a pilot study on the local community’s social perception regarding coal mines in Upper Silesia. The research was performed in connection with the smog, which was persistent and harmful to residents during the winter months of 2016. The researchers put forward to the local community the following two survey questions: 1. Is the image of coal mines in the eyes of the local community positive or negative? 2. Are coal mines socially responsible and is coal a good energy source? The aim of this article is to indicate the relationship of the local community to the presence of hard coal mines in the neighbourhood and their social role. Also, this work looks to identify the nuisances perceived by the inhabitants of the examined region about mining enterprises and whether these burdens should result in abandonment of hard coal mining. Pilot studies were conducted with the use of a diagnostic survey. The study was carried out in January 2017 on a sample of 267 people, comprising Silesian University of Technology students residing in Upper Silesia. An environmental survey technique was used. The researchers hypothesise that the image of mining and coal as a fuel for the local community is negative and the mines are not socially responsible enterprises. This research shows that the operation of mines is essential for society and its stability as it affects economic, social and energy safety. A large proportion of the respondents defined the image of mining as positive (108 people), but 76 people indicated that the image was rather negative. Most respondents pointed to the benefits of the mine’s operation. Opinions on social responsibility were divided, and most respondents failed to provide concrete examples of social engagement, so the first hypothesis was partly confirmed. Although the respondents pointed to various nuisances resulting from the mining companies operating in their environment, they also recognised significant social aspects related to employability and access to relatively cheap fuel. However, they do not realise the social involvement of mines, which is one of the conditions of sustainable development. Pilot studies allowed for the initial identification of problems and verification of the research tool utilised in this study.

Gdy wielkość kopalń wzrosła tak, iż wyrobiska górnicze zostały oddalone od szybu nieraz o kilka kilometrów, ręczny transport urobku okazał się zbyt uciążliwy i mało wydajny. Zaprzęgnięto wtedy do pracy konie, parę, a wreszcie elektryczność.
Coal was mined manually initially from adits and later from shallow main shafts. When the coal mines expanded and mining excavations spread a few kilometers beyond adits hand transport turned out to be very burdensome and non-productive therefore horses, steam and finally electricity were used in coal transport. The study describes the history of the development of electrification of coal mines.
