Opis:
The aim of the article is to examine the figure of an artist in the novel Charlotte by David Foenkinos. With his text, he desires to pay homage to Charlotte Salomon, a Jewish painter murdered at age twenty-six in Auschwitz. The Salomon’s biography and works became famous thanks to the novel by Foenkinos. The great merit of his book is to make the painter recognizable to a wide public. The interpretation of the text in which central figure is a painter should include a question about the generic status of the novel, thus the reflection about the Künstlerroman, and about the status of the image in the text, the narrative processes used to make the text more plastic, the ekphrasis, etc. The problem seems interesting because Charlotte does not correspond with the traditional definition of the Künstlerroman. The narrator refers the reader to the extradégétique reality in order to make a connection between the reader and Charlotte’s painting; therefore, he focuses his story on the conception of the image and not on the image itself.

Opis:
This paper proposes a conversation between Charlotte Salomon (1917–43) and Edvard Munch that is premised on a reading of Charlotte Salomon’s monumental project of 784 paintings forming a single work Leben? oder Theater? (1941–42) as itself a reading of potentialities for painting, as a staging of subjectivity in the work of Edvard Munch, notably in his assembling paintings to form the Frieze of Life. Drawing on both Mieke Bal’s critical concept of “preposterous history” and my own project of “the virtual feminist museum” as a framework for tracing resonances that are never influences or descent in conventional art historical terms, this paper traces creative links between the serial paintings of these two artists across the shared thematic of loneliness and psychological extremity mediated by the legacy of Friedrich Nietzsche.

« Théorie du genre » and Controversies about Equal Rights in France Focusing on debates held in France and concerning gay marriage, and on the use of the expression “théorie du genre,” this article examines anti-gender discourse outside academic spheres and its use serving to dismiss women’s claims for equal rights. “Théorie du genre” is shown to constitute a mistranslation of “gender theory,” with conceptual but also political consequences, as the rejection of the concept of gender is presented as an act of national resistance to the importation of a foreign and dangerous concept. Anti-gender discourse is described as an “ideological formation” (rennes 93), and the prominence of the expression “théorie du genre” in recent public debates is analyzed in order to bring to light its Catholic grounding, its main semantic and lexical features, and its polemical purpose. Key words: polemics, gender, enunciation, translation, equal rights, ideology.

Opis:
The monodrama Ein Gespräch im Hause Stein über den abwesenden Herrn von Goethe is a multidimensional literary experiment in the post-war German playwriting history. Written in 1974, the play was first published by the East German publishing house Aufbau (1976), and to this day, it remains the most recognizable literary work of Peter Hacks, who was born in Breslau (1928-2003). The drama belongs to the middle phase of the work of an author, who, along with Heiner Müller, is considered one of GDR’s greatest playwright. Hacks confronted the figure and work of Goethe many times in both his literary texts and essays on the poetics of drama. Ein Gespräch in Hause Stein… had its theater premiere in 1976 in Staatsschauspiel Dresden and since then has been played on over 200 stages of the German-speaking region and in more than twenty other countries. The Polish premiere of the play, translated by Zbigniew Krawczykowski, took place in 1978 at the Ateneum Theater in Warsaw, where it was directed by Aleksandra Śląska. A year later, the Czechoslovak premiere took place on the Prague stage Divadlo on Vinohradech with Iva Janžurova starring as Charlotte. The play’s plot takes place in October 1786 at the home of Charlotte von Stein and her husband, Josias. Divided into five acts, the drama maintains the Aristotelian principle of three unities. Alongside these classical tragedy similarities. Hacks uses Brecht's technique of distancing (V-Effekt), which modifies the theatre's basic aesthetic assumptions. The paper aims to analyze the modifications in the structure of Hacks’s dramatic text, taking into account the postulate of socialist classics and the literary typology of metadrama (Vieweg-Marks 1989). The analysis is intended to answer the question suggested in the title: namely, how Peter Hacks’s play presents and dramatizes the love of Charlotte von Stein and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe almost 200 years later. As such, this paper is a continuation of the latest research on Ein Gespräch im Hause Stein... conducted in the tradition of German and Czech German Studies.

Opis:
Various initiatives have been launched to encourage sociology students studying in the UK to engage more with quantitative research methods (for example: Dale et al., 2008; Adney and Carey, 2009; Falkingham et al., 2009), however, their success has been limited. Embedding quantitative methods in substantive sociology curricula has been suggested as one way to reduce students’ anxieties about learning quantitative research methods (Williams et al., 2015). This approach has been employed at Cardiff University’s School of Social Sciences, where quantitative skills have been strategically incorporated into various aspects of a first year undergraduate substantive module. This paper will reflect on the experience of teaching on this module. The paper will conclude that while the introduction of quantitative content into substantive modules indicates support for change, embedding alone cannot be viewed as a single solution to encouraging to students’ to learn about or utilise quantitative research methods. Two possible reasons for this will be suggested. Firstly, it will be argued that the majority of students no longer pursue sociology at degree level in order to gain the skills to become a competent social researcher, but rather see sociology as a discipline that will equip them with transferable and desirable skills for many occupations. Consequently, engagement with quantitative research methods is not essential to students’ strategic approach to learning as it was for previous generations who wished to understand how to study their social world. Secondly, it will be suggested that the deficit of quantitative methods in mainstream British sociology journals and the methodological preferences of practicing sociologists leads to speculation over the available staff who are capable of delivering an integrated curriculum with quantitative methods embedded in substantive modules.
