Opis:
The article presents hitherto unknown letters in Polish by Edward Możejko, a Canadian scholar of Polish origin, to the Bulgarian scholar Petar Dinekov. These letters reveal the professional contacts between the two men in the 1960s when the young Możejko defends his dissertation on a topic in the field of Bulgarian studies at the Jagiellonian University and Dinekov is one of his reviewers. The letters are explored in the context of other documentary sources. The present study is part of a larger project on epistolary heritage testifying the active professional contacts of Dinekov with the Polish cultural intelligentsia.

Gwałtowne zmiany społeczne i polityczne – rewolucje, ruchy masowe, procesy demokratyzacji – były flagowymi tematami socjologii historycznej w jej klasycznej postaci. Choć jej czołowi przedstawiciele – jak Charles Tilly czy Theda Skocpol – nie byli ślepi na zmiany w obrębie nauk humanistycznych i społecznych, tylko w niewielkim stopniu w swych późnych pracach uwzględnili reperkusje zwrotu kulturowego czy lingwistycznego dla swojej dyscypliny. Jednocześnie heterodoksyjne tradycje badawcze zorientowane na różnie pojęty dyskurs zwróciły się ku badaniom historycznym. Artykuł jest próbą przemyślenia podstawowych pytań stawianych przez klasyczną socjologię historyczną Tilly’ego w świetle zorientowanej na dyskurs korekty epistemologicznej, i przede wszystkim ontologicznej, w naukach społecznych. Tekst łączy cechy artykułu przeglądowego i przyczynku teoretycznego. Prezentuje dorobek rozproszonych, choć mających w sobie niemało do powiedzenia dyscyplin badawczych i proponuje możliwości ich wzajemnej integracji. Jest także próbą przemyślenia i rekonstrukcji zorientowanej na dyskurs socjologii historycznej.
Turbulent social changes such as revolutions, mass movements or processes of democratization were major topics for the classical historical sociology. Its leading proponents such as Charles Tilly or Theda Skocpol were generally receptive towards paradigmatic shifts in social sciences and the humanities. However, their receptions of linguistic and cultural turn were limited if not flawed. This article attempts to rethink classical research questions of Tilly’s historical sociology from the perspective of discourse-oriented epistemological and ontological shift. The paper presents relevant insights from various research disciplines concerning discourse theory and historical discourse analysis and offers a way of their cross-fertilization. It is also an attempt to reconstruct and rearticulate historical sociology as a discourse oriented theoretical and methodological perspective.

Celem artykułu jest interpretacja i krytyka koncepcji teistycznych znaków naturalnych (TZN), przedstawionej przez Charlesa S. Evansa. TZN to charakterystyczne doświadczenia lub własności świata, które sprawiają, że jednostka, która się z nimi zetknie, formuje pewne podstawowe, uzasadnione przekonania o istnieniu Boga i jego naturze. W artykule proponuję dwie interpretacje tego, jak funkcjonują TZN, odwołujące się do kategorii percepcji i pośredniej identyfikacji percepcyjnej. Przedstawiam także dwa argumenty krytyczne wobec koncepcji TZN. Po pierwsze, wskazuję, że nie wyjaśnia ona zadowalająco, dlaczego TZN są niejednoznaczne, tj., mogą być odczytywane na różne sposoby. Po drugie, zauważam, że pewne doświadczenia można potraktować jako „ateistyczne znaki naturalne”. Istnienie takich doświadczeń daje rację do przypuszczenia, że Bóg jest zwodzicielem.
The aim of this paper is to interpret and criticize the theory of theistic natural signs (TNS), formulated by Charles S. Evans. TNS are characteristic experiences or features of the world which cause the person who encounters them to form certain basic beliefs about the existence and nature of God. I propose two interpretations of how TNS work, using the categories of perception and indirect perceptual recognition. I also present two arguments against the theory of TNS. First, I point out that the theory does not explain adequately why TNS are ambiguous, i.e., can be read in different ways. Second, I observe that certain experiences may be taken to be „atheistic natural signs”. Their existence gives one a reason to suspect that God is a deceiver.

The article constitutes a re-reading of Charles Baudelaire’s Correspondences in the light of the controversial concept of ideasthesia. The author proposes that the sonnet operates on three levels of sensory cognition: an initial stage of rational sensory segmentation, a subsequent synaesthetic fusion of odours, sounds and colours, and finally – an ideasthetic synthesis of feeling and knowing.  The final stage of sensory processing triumphantly concludes the Symbolist quest for an elusive “beyond”, approximating the material and the ideal – the mechanism of which resembles an ideasthetic processing of sensory data. The poem mirrors the cognitive optimism characteristic of Baudelaire’s early thinking, soon to dissipate into melancholic (or Manichean) cognitive bankruptcy.

The article presents the actions undertaken by Maria Casimire during the Great Northern War in the hope of securing the throne of Poland for her eldest son Prince James. It is based on the queen's private correspondence with her eldest son, held in the National Historical Archive of Belarus in Minsk and being prepared for publication by the Museum of King John III's Palace at Wilanów. Letters dating from the years 1701-1704 reveal the queen's futile diplomatic endeavours to sway the opinion of the Holy See, as well as her attempts to secure the support of various European courts and to influence the anti-royalist opposition in Greater Poland through the intercession of supportive politicians. In addition, her correspondence discloses arguments referring to moral and ideological categories which the Sobieski family used to justify its actions, which were detrimental to the lawful reign of King Augustus II. The contents of these letters demonstrates Maria Casimire's considerable political experience; the queen was well versed in the mechanisms that ruled the democracy of the nobility, and especially in the bad political practices typical to it. The queen was her son's best advisor, mobilising him to act in concert with King Charles XII of Sweden, even though she herself was for a long time distrustful of him. Her correspondence with the prince indicates that Maria Casimire was deeply involved in the matter of her son's repeated election, but also shows that she was losing her political influence, especially in comparison with the period of the interregnum after the death of her husband King John III

Artykuł jest poświęcony ujęciu nowoczesnego indywidualizmu w "Etyce autentyczności" Charlesa Taylora. Stawiam tezę, że Taylor trafnie opisuje konsumpcyjno-popkulturową formę tego indywidualizmu, natomiast nietrafnie jego wzniosłą formę, związaną z tradycją romantyczną. Tę znacznie lepiej opisał, krytykowany przez Taylora, Fryderyk Nietzsche.
The article is devoted to the recognition of modern individualism in Charles Taylor’s "Ethics of Authenticity". I assert that Taylor describes the consumer and pop-cultural form of this individualism aptly, but its sublime form, associated with the Romantic tradition, inaccurately. The latter is described much better by Friedrich Nietzsche, who is criticised by Taylor.

I argue that Taylor’s engagement with secularity demonstrates his deep concern for preserving key humanist insights, an abiding commitment to moral pluralism, and the sincerity of his religious faith. Taylor insists on transcendence as the best hope for securing the continued commitment to the moral legacy of humanism in the west, but while he personally advocates a renewed Christian humanism, his notion of transcendence is amenable to other interpretations, including non-religious options, and so allows for a potential overlapping consensus on humanism from what Taylor calls the “transformation perspective.”
Staram się dowieść, że zaangażowanie Taylora w badania nad świeckością świadczy o głębokim zatroskaniu tego filozofa o ocalenie kluczowych wglądów humanizmu, o jego trwałym opowiedzeniu się za moralnym pluralizmem, a także o autentyczności jego wiary religijnej. Taylor kładzie nacisk na transcendencję jako dającą najlepszą nadzieję, że przyjęcie moralnego dziedzictwa humanizmu będzie kontynuowane w kulturze Zachodu. Osobiście jest on zwolennikiem odnowy chrześcijańskiego humanizmu, jednak jego pojęcie transcendencji pozostaje otwarte również na inne interpretacje, łącznie z opcjami poza obszarem religii, zatem dopuszcza ono potencjalny konsens ogarniający różne odmiany humanizmu w perspektywie, którą Taylor nazywa „perspektywą przekształcenia”.

The article discusses the treatment of the trickster figure in the Polish tradition of the “Puss in Boots” tale addressed to children. The analysis of the texts by Antoni Józef Gliński (1853), an anonymous author (1912), Ewa Szelburg-Zarembina (1954), Hanna Januszewska (1968), Milena Kusztelska (2009), and Robert Jarosz (2015) shows that the tale is often inscribed within the value system meant for the moral education and socialization of children. Depending on the emphasis put on this didactic intention, the ambivalent character of the cat can be either justified and absorbed by the established moral order, or excluded from it and condemned.

Artykuł poświęcony jest zagadnieniu zmian w tłumaczeniu wyrażeń i nazw emocjonalnych na podstawie drugiej książki bożonarodzeniowej Charlesa Dickensa The Chimes (1844) i jej pięciu polskich tłumaczeń. Oficjalnie historia polskich przekładów rozpoczyna się od anonimowego przekładu w 1846 r. Autorka porównuje i kontrastuje dwa anonimowe tłumaczenia (1846, 1923), Marii Kreczowskiej (1946), Krystyny Tarnowskiej (1989) oraz Jerzego Łozińskiego (2015). Celem artykułu jest prezentacja i analiza wybranych zwrotów i leksemów emotywnych nazywających i wyrażających uczucia, które zaobserwowano w opowieści. W szczególności autorka skupia się na różnorodnych zabiegach stylistycznych wpływających na emotywność utworu.
The article deals with the issue of changes in the translation of emotional expressions and names based on Charles Dickens’ second Christmas book, The Chimes (1844) and its five Polish translations. The official history of the Polish translations begins with an anonymous translation in 1846. The author compares and contrasts two anonymous translations (1846, 1923) with the ones by Maria Kreczowska (1946), Krystyna Tarnowska (1989) and Jerzy Łoziński (2015). The purpose of the article is to present and analyze selected phrases and emotive lexemes naming and expressing feelings observed in the story. In particular, the author focuses on a variety of stylistic procedures affecting the emotionality of the work.
