Opis:
Drawing on James Scott’s works on “everyday resistance” and “weapons of the weak”, this article inquires whether Roman Catholic women’s gossip and jokes about priests may lead to a redefinition of priest-parishioners’ relations. Using ethnographic material collected during field research in rural Poland, the article demonstrates the ambivalent nature of anticlerical jokes and rumours, which, rather than constituting a tool of change, reaf- firm the existing order. In putting forward this argument, the article critically engages with Scott’s theory and reflects on the problematic role of researchers in presenting the issue of agency and resistance. The analyzed case-study from the Polish countryside constitutes a point of departure for addressing a broader context of church-state relations and the situation of women in the Catholic Church in Poland.

The following article treats the necessity of cooperation between Catholic parishes and national missions in Sweden – for the benefit of the immigrants. The analysis includes the status of these two fundamental institutions of pastoral care in the administrative structure of the Catholic Church. Some thought has also been given to the possibilities and difficulties arising from the fact that the cross-section of the society constituting the Catholic community in Sweden is multicultural, as well as to the level of awareness of building a difficult unity as a necessary requirement for the transmission of Christian values to the next generation.

Rozwój administracyjny Kościoła katolickiego w Gdańsku zaczął się wraz z pojawieniem się chrześcijaństwa na ziemiach polskich. Z pierwszej parafii obejmującej gród nadmotławski oraz całą okolicę z biegiem czasu wyrosły kolejne ośrodki duszpasterskie. Obecnie w Gdańsku znajduje się 59 placówek parafialnych Kościoła katolickiego. Największy ich rozwój nastąpił w ubiegłym wieku, a wpływ na to miała przede wszystkim stopniowo powiększająca się liczba ludności wyznania katolickiego, która po 1945 r. osiągnęła w mieście pozycję dominującą. Zapał z jakim po II wojnie światowej dostojnicy kościelni zakładali nowe parafie, został zahamowany poprzez odgórną politykę państwa, zmierzającą do wyrugowania religii z życia społecznego. Kolejne lata upłynęły na żmudnych negocjacjach strony kościelnej z władzami wojewódzkimi, które wykorzystywały wszystkie powody, aby uniemożliwić budowę nowych świątyń i zakładanie osobnych parafii. Trudności z tym związane ostatecznie przezwyciężone zostały pod wpływem zmian politycznych jakie zaszły w kraju po roku 1980.
Administrative development of the Catholic Church in Gdańsk started to take its course at the time when Christianity appeared on Polish territory. The first parish gave rise to the construction of many others so that at present there are 59 Catholic parishes in this city altogether. The greatest increase in the number of parishes was seen in the previous century, a phenomenon caused by a sharp rise in the size of the Catholic community of Gdańsk. After 1945 Catholicism rose to prominence in comparison with other Christian denominations and religions of Gdańsk. Still, its functioning was heavily hindered by the postwar communist regime of the Polish People’s Republic. This dire situation improved only after 1980.

The author bases himself on the statistical data of 1986 gathered by the Institute of the Sociology of Religion SAC and research carried out in 7896 parishes in all Polish dioceses. The sociographic description takes into account the following subjects: the number of parishes according to dioceses and voievodships; types of parishes (diocesan and religious, urban, urban-rural and rural); the number of the faithful and priests; churches, chapels and catechetical centres; fellowship movements in the parishes of some chosen dioceses (the diocese in Białystok, Gdan´ sk, Katowice, Gorzów). The researches into the religious movements and fellowships were carried out within the framework of a broader subject which concerned the role of a Roman-Catholic parish in the organization of social life at the local level. The study contains information on the number of religious movements and fellowships in the parishes under investigation as well as the tasks which they fulfill.

The article contains the analysis of the results of research on information policy implemented by priests in Roman Catholic parishes in the diocese of Rzeszów. The research was carried out from June to September 2018. It was conducted on the basis of anonymous questionnaire interviews. The research group consisted of 85 priests. The aim of the research is to analyze the application of information policy tools in the parishes of Rzeszów diocese and to check how priests define the concept of information policy, as well as what kind of tools they use to communicate with the faithful and which of them are preferred by their parishioners. Moreover, the author wanted to find out if they see the need for educational activities in the field of communication.

Opis:
Genealogy is becoming increasingly popular in Poland. Growing interest in family history, including genealogy, is also visible in Uniejów municipality. Reconstruction of the history of a particular family over several generations is based on orally transmitted information and stories, and private documents. The history of older generations can be established only by studying archival documents. Parish registers of births, marriages and deaths kept by the Roman-Catholic Church and documents in state registries are the primary source for genealogical research. Documents for four parishes in Uniejów municipality have been preserved in a fairly good state: Wielenin (since1594), Uniejów (since 1612), Spycimierz (since 1723) and Wilamów (since 1762).

Przedmiotem niniejszego artykułu są nazwy miejscowe w inskrypcjach nagrobnych, które zachowały się na wiejskich cmentarzach katolickich historycznego Podola. Celem jest ich analiza przez pryzmat klasyfikacji zaproponowanej przez Kazimierza Długosza. Inskrypcje nagrobne, traktowane jako „teksty kultury”, ukazują relacje społeczne dawnego Podola jako terenu pogranicza, kwestie tożsamościowe, a także przemiany kulturowe i gospodarcze.
The subject of this article are local names in tombstone inscriptions that have survived in the rural Catholic cemeteries of historical Podolia. The aim is to analyze tchem through the prism of the classification proposed by Kazimierz Długosz. Tombstone inscriptions, treated as “texts of culture”, show the social relations of the former Podolia as a border area, identity issues, as well as cultural and economic changes.

The Church performs its task of leading people to salvation, among others, through organizing chaplaincy in parishes. It means that parishes are extremely important centres of each diocese and the community of the faithful. It was the same in Lublin in the 1960s. Due to the fact that there were only two parishes in the city, the pastoral work of diocesan priests was also supported by religious orders. However, the tsarist government, in November 1864, dissolved most of the monasteries in the Kingdom of Poland, which caused difficulties in providing appropriate pastoral care. Therefore, at the end of 1864, the then administrator of the Diocese of Lublin Rev. Kazimierz Sosnowski made an attempt to reorganize a parish life in Lublin in order to satisfy religious needs of the faithful and fill the gap left by the dissolved monasteries. The reorganization involved creating two new parishes in the churches which had belonged to the Capuchins and Bernardines before their dissolution and transferring a parish service from St Nicholas Church to St Agnes Church, which had been in the possession of the Augustinians before the dissolution. In order to conduct this project, Rev. Sosnowski started negotiations with the Government Commission of Internal Affairs and Clergy, which finally ended in 1866. This article details the various stages of these negotiations, their causes and effects.

Polish parishes and priests working in them shaped the image of the Polish emigration in America in the 19th century. The parish was not only an institution with a purely religious character, allowing to realize one's spiritual needs, making it possible to participate in religious services, to receive sacraments and to learn the truths of faith. It was definitely something more. It formed – following the example of the ones existing on the territory of Poland – constant family-neighborly relations. Owing to this, a man who came to an unknown place and was anxious about his future practically felt at home; he was among „his own folk”. Joseph Wytrwal even defined the parish as „Poland in miniature”. With the help of the school, and also of numerous organizations that were developed in the parish, it organized the emigrant’s life practically from the moment of his arrival to the town. It ensured him at least primary education. It integrated emigrants and allowed both maintaining the Polish ethnical awareness by using the Polish language and maintaining the customs and traditions brought from Poland. It made it possible to participate in cultural events and in social life. It helped fill in the young and adult people's free time. It allowed being involved in the work for the whole parish community. It may be said that parishes played the main role in the functioning of the Polish community in Chicago, or more properly, that if fact they shaped that community.

Szkice opracowane przez Karola Perthéesa stanowiły dla niego podstawę do przygotowania w końcu XVIII wieku map województw zachodniej Korony w granicach po pierwszym rozbiorze. Informacje w Szkicach pochodziły z ankiet parafialnych przygotowanych przez plebanów. Szkice zawierają m.in. wiadomości o strukturach terytorialnych Kościoła katolickiego. Ze względu na ich pośrednie pochodzenie od instytucji kościelnych można próbować je wykorzystać do rekonstrukcji struktur terytorialnych Kościoła. Ewaluacja informacji ze Szkiców na ten temat wskazuje jednak, że źródło to jest pod tym względem nierówne. Wynika to z faktu, że tylko informacje o parafiach i ich przynależności dekanalnej pochodzą zawsze bezpośrednio od Perthéesa (przez niego z ankiet parafialnych), a informacje o jednostkach wyższego rzędu często od osoby, która po śmierci Pertheesa opracowywała ten materiał, osoba ta nie posiadała jednak odpowiednich do tego kompetencji. Za wiarygodne w Szkicach można uznać informację o ponad 2050 parafiach, a te o jednostkach wyższego rzędu należy konfrontować z innymi źródłami.
The Sketches of Charles Perthées were for him the basis for the preparation of the maps of the western Crown after the First Partition of Poland at the end of the 18th century. The information in Sketches came from parish questionnaires prepared by parsons. The Sketches include information about the territorial structures of the Catholic Church. Due to their indirect church provenience, we can assume that they can be used to study the territorial structures of the Church. Evaluation of the information from the Sketches, however, shows that the source is unequal in this matter. Only information about parishes and their affiliation to deaneries always come from Perthées, and information about higher administrative units often from the person who developed Sketches after Perthées’ death, however, this person lacked competence. Information about more than 2050 parishes can be considered credible, and those about higher units should be confronted with other sources.

The presented article is an attempt to answer the question about the legal character of pastoral work of parish priests and parish assistants in the light of the polish law. Analysis of labour legislations, social insurance, current tax regulations and civil law leads to conclusion that priestly ministry cannot be classified as employment contract or any other form of employment. This sort of ministry can’t be listed in any known type of legal agreement. In such a case contractus innominatus (nameless contract) should be applied to the clerical ministry. Polish law permits the use of contractus innominatus. The content of such contracts, within the boarders determined by the absolutely obligatory norms, can be freely drawn up by the parties.

This type of information is a valuable source supplementing the history of a region. The data can be analysed from various angles and for different purposes: biographical, genealogical, demographic, anthroponomastic and toponomastic. The information obtained is particularly useful for researchers studying the history of the registry, medicine, material culture and ethnography.

On the basis of the inventory of April 1939, prepared by Rev. Wincenty Franckiewicz, who gave St. Michael the Archangel’s parish church in Iwieniec to his successor Hilary Pracz – Franciscan, we gain information on a brief history of the baroque church and the Franciscan monastery in the borderlands town of Iwieniec. On this occasion, we also learn about the history of the first Roman Catholic parish of the Holy Trinity in Iwieniec, dating back to the mid-sixteenth century. After the Partitions of Poland, Tsarist Russia held dominion over these areas, and Catholic parishes in these areas were often dissolved due to repression after uprisings. Such a fate befell the parishes and churches of Iwieniec, and they were given to the Orthodox Church by the decision of the tsarist government. Only after the First World War, when Poland regained independence, the church in Iwieniec was restored to Roman Catholics. The inventory of the parish of Iwieniec presents the condition of the parish, including pastoral work, church property, the condition of religious buildings and outbuildings, the parish archive, and the activity of the parish office.

In 1928, society of the thriving borderland city of Baranowicze Poleskie launched a commendable initiative, the aim of which was to create another pastoral centre in that city for the local faithful of the Roman Rite. Those initiatives were made with great care for the spiritual good of the local faithful. The Executive Committee of the Church Construction appointed for that purpose in Baranowicze, then renamed the Citizens’ Committee of the Church Construction, did not take account of church law and practice in its structure. With a lay person being in charge, it did not receive approval of the ordinary of the Diocese of Pińsk, and thus efforts to build a church could not be carried out in accordance with expectations. It was not until 1934- when the parish priest and dean of Baranowicze, Rev. Jan Borysiuk, became the president of the Committee, that the relations with the diocesan ecclesiastical authority were normalised-that authority was the one which took decisions regarding the ongoing construction work in the new pastoral centre in Baranowicze. Long-term efforts on the creation of a new parish in that town resulted in erection- on 23 January 1937- the parish dedicated to Our Lady Queen of the Polish Crown and the appointment of its first parish priest Rev.Antoni Kohutnicki.

Opis:
By the decree of 1945, post-war non-democratic authorities in Poland created the offices that from 1946 on, would administrate civil registry files. It was an important innovation in that during the Second Republic (1918–1939), Poland did not have a unified system of civil registration and used the legal acts of former rulers. In the case of Kolno County (which used the system of the former Kingdom of Poland) the vital records were written down by rectors of the local Roman Catholic parishes and had the character of public registers. These records were necessary for the new civil registration offices, which needed them for making copies of individual certificates. Due to very bad relations between the communist authorities and The Church, and because of weakness of the new administration, the operation was delayed by 3 years. The work carried out in that period was performed carelessly and chaotically, and ended with the confiscation of most of the vital records from years 1890–1945 from all parishes in Kolno County.
