    Opis:
    After World War II an important position in Polish protective and educational system was taken by institutions conducted by Catholic church and convents. Especially important were orphanages, nurseries, day nurseries, kindergartens, special institutions and dispensaries, mother and child information centers. After the election to Sejm in 1947 the government gradually started to limit religious education in all three types of schools, close down Catholic schools and protective and educational institutions. The aim of such activities was to prevent the Catholic church in Poland from educating children and youth. Every year the number of protective and educational institutions conducted by orders and convents decreased. The representatives of most important social groups tried to defend the institutions which were being closed down. Unfortunately, the activities did not have any positive effect.

    Opis:
    The Catholicism in Sweden with all its rich historical and social structure is also constituted by the influence of the male orders on the spirituality, religiosity and everyday life of Christians in Sweden. These communities could not continue their activities after the Reformation. They returned, however, and came to life slowly and gradually, simultaneously with the advancing religious tolerance. As of today many orders in the Catholic Church are committed to social and pastoral challenges on Swedish soil, both in the catholic communities and in broader social circles. Their extensive past is closely bound with the difficult past of Catholicism in Sweden and the contemporary issues of postmodern society.

    Opis:
    Among the many threads of social life in Sweden there is one that not so commonly known, almost imperceptible current in the community of the Catholic Church. It concerns the process of rebirth or the creation of new female orders or female protestant ecumenical societies with similar goals and aims. This phenomenon has a broad and interesting sociological and psychological background. The migration phenomenon researcher is here fascinated by the fact that in a country with a highly developed emancipation and feministic awareness, where the women are perfect models of liberation, more and more there are cases of women’s self fulfillment in a completely different way of life. The rebirth of female religious orders is a sign of the times in a welfare society. It points to the truth that the material and social structures do not provide the modern woman with a possibility to fulfillment of her most inner human wishes.

    Repeatedly raised demands for the need to draw up the lists of directories (liturgical calendars) and schematisms became an incentive to produce a catalogue of directories and schematisms of male and female religious orders existing in the territory of the Polish Republic. This work is based on part of a collection of these kinds of printed documents stored in the University Library KUL and covering the years 1690-2008. Its size is estimated to be around 600 titles, which places it among the largest collections of this type in academic libraries in Poland. The entire bibliographic material was divided into two parts, the first of which includes male religious orders and congregations and the other female religious orders and congregations. Titles are listed chronologically according to administrative units which were part of various religious orders. A short description of religious orders includes mainly administrative divisions, which facilitates the identification of individual printed documents. The Catalogue ... was preceded by an introduction, in which attempts were made to introduce general characteristics of the presented part of the collection: its internal structure, size, and various elements of bibliographic description.

    This study casts light on the circumstances and effects of changes to the legal acts defining the legal framework of the activities of religious orders in post-war Poland. Until 1949, religious orders had not been covered by the regulations on the creation and legalization of secular associations. Pursuant to the decree of 5 August 1949, however, they were obligated to comply with the provisions of the Law on Associations. Failure to apply for the registration resulted in the dissolution of the order and the forfeiture of its assets by the state. Still, despite the submission of the applications as provided by law, the authorities refused to registered orders and did not maintain an official register of such entities, either. In point of fact, the communist regime only intended to develop such a legal context in which the law might be used as a tool of repression against religious orders. The actual aim of the 1949 amendment was not the intent to clarify the legal status of religious orders, which remained uncertain in the aftermath of the Resolution of the Provisional Government of National Unity of 12 September 1945 invalidating the 1925 Concordat. The authorities only intended to establish a strict state control over religious organizations and, by extension, gradually reduce their activity until their complete disappearance from public life. The content relies primarily on the analysis of the legislation and archival material gathered in the state and ecclesiastical archives in Poland.
    Artykuł pokazuje okoliczności i skutki zmiany aktów prawnych, określających prawne ramy działalności zakonów w Polsce po II wojnie światowej. Do roku 1949 zakony nie podlegały przepisom dotyczącym tworzenia i legalizacji zrzeszeń świeckich. Na podstawie dekretu z dnia 5 sierpnia 1949 r. zostały zobowiązane do podporządkowania się przepisom Prawa o stowarzyszeniach. Brak wniosku o rejestrację skutkować miał rozwiązaniem zgromadzenia zakonnego i przejęciem jego majątku na rzecz państwa. Pomimo złożenia przewidzianych prawem wniosków, władze nie dokonały rejestracji zakonów, nie prowadziły również formalnego rejestru tych podmiotów. W rzeczywistości bowiem władzom zależało jedynie na ukształtowaniu takiego stanu prawnego, który można byłoby wykorzystać jako narzędzie represji wobec zakonów. Jak pokazują materiały archiwalne, prawdziwym celem nowelizacji z 1949 r. nie było dążenie do uregulowania stanu prawnego zakonów, który w tamtym okresie pozostawał niepewny ze względu na uchwałę Tymczasowego Rządu Jedności Narodowej z dnia 12 września 1945 r. deklarującą nieobowiązywanie Konkordatu z 1925 r. Władzom zależało jedynie na objęciu zakonów skrupulatnym nadzorem państwowym, a w konsekwencji stopniowe ograniczanie ich działalności, aż do zupełnego usunięcia z życia społecznego. Tekst oparty został przede wszystkim na analizie aktów prawnych oraz na materiałach archiwalnych zgromadzonych w polskich archiwach państwowych i kościelnych.

    It is already the author’s fourth publication in the excerpta series in which he makes available to Polish historians the abundant material on Polish affairs housed in the Vatican archives. The tradition of publications of this type has a long standing in Polish historical sciences. This time the author crossed the boundary of the Vatican and consulted two important Roman institutions: Archivio di Stato di Roma and Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Roma. The subject matter of this part of the excerpta refers to the territory of the historical Greater Poland and the representatives of the episcopate and religious orders active there. Each of the presented persons had to be connected to the history of the archdiocese of Gniezno or the diocese of Poznań in the times of Old Poland in their extensive historical borders.

    W Polsce po II wojnie światowej, prowadzona wówczas przez władze komunistyczne polityka wyznaniowa miała swe źródło w założeniach systemu marksistowsko-leninowskiego, ateistycznego w swej istocie, a w konsekwencji tego, wrogiego kościołom i związkom wyznaniowym. Ponieważ w Polsce przeważającą większość społeczeństwa stanowili wierni Kościoła katolickiego, toteż właśnie przeciwko instytucjom tego Kościoła skierowany został niemal cały impet antyreligijnej kampanii ówczesnych władz. Jedną z metod walki było instrumentalne stosowanie przepisów prawa stanowionego. Artykuł ukazuje takie właśnie wykorzystywanie przepisów rozporządzenia Prezydenta RP z dnia 27 października 1932 r. – Prawo o stowarzyszeniach. Wszystkie zgromadzenia zakonne zostały podporządkowane przepisom tego prawa po wejściu w życie dekretu z 5 sierpnia 1949 r. Środkiem represji wobec zgromadzeń zakonnych Kościoła katolickiego stały się wówczas przepisy dotyczące nie tylko legalizacji zrzeszeń, czy likwidacji już działających, ale nawet te określające sprawowanie nadzoru nad działalnością tych zalegalizowanych zrzeszeń. W niniejszym opracowaniu pokazane zostały przykłady instrumentalnego wykorzystywania przepisów Prawa o stowarzyszeniach do kontrolowania i utrudniania działalności zgromadzeniom zakonnym.
    In Poland, after World War II, religious policy, led then by the communist government, was rooted in the Marxist-Leninist system that was atheistic in nature and, as a consequence, hostile to churches and religious associations. In Poland, the vast majority of the population were Catholic, so almost full brunt of anti-religious campaign of the then authorities was directed against the institutions of the Catholic Church. One of the methods of fighting was instrumental application of the provisions of statutory law. The article describes such an application of the Regulation of the President of the Republic of Poland of 27 October 1932 - Law on Associations. All congregations had to comply with the provisions of this law after the entry into force of the Decree of 5 August 1949. Thus, the rules relating not only to legalization or liquidation of the associations already operating, but even those defining supervision over the activities of these legalized associations  have become the means of repression against religious congregations of the Catholic Church. In this paper, the author presented examples of the instrumental application of the provisions of the Law on Associations to monitor and obstruct the activities religious orders.

    The political trials of members of male orders and congregations in the Czechosloslovakia in the period of 1948–1989 The study depicts persecutions of male orders and congregations in the period of the Communism regime in the Czech lands during the period of 1948–1989. It indicates the graduał restriction of their activities after the Communist takeover in February 1948. The first part includes the period of 1948–1968, namely the mass attack of the Communist oppressors on the orders shortly after assuming authority, the restriction of their public activities until the complete liquidation of all male orders in Czechoslovakia in April 1950, the so-called K campaign implemented by the state security services (in Czech: Státní bezpečnost). It also mentions the life of monks in centralising internment camps and the illegal renewing of communes as well as the continuation of conventual life in hiding in the 1950s and 1960s. The most significant form of the persecutions committed on monks were the political show trials. In the early 1950s and subsequently in the 1960s, within the Czech lands, during two large rounds of trials, 361 monks were convicted in 175 trials, including 18 of them more than once. The frequent cause of the imprisonment and conviction of the monks was, firstly, their public activities, reading pastoral letters, criticising Communism during their sermons or helping people related to the Anti-Communism movement. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, in the majority of case, these were group trials including several dozen members of the order, the purpose of which was the liquidation of any signs of life emanating from the Order: secret meetings, enrolling new members, ordinations. In particular, the 1950s were characterised by severe sentences (58 monks were sentenced to 10-15 in prison, 14 to 20 years or more and 3 to life imprisonment). The most striking aspect was the cruelty of the interrogation methods of the secret agents of the state security, mentally and physically torturing the persons they interrogated; at least 3 monks died in remand centres and 6 while serving time in prison. The second part of the text provides an analysis of the orders in the period 1968–1989. The nationwide thaw in the period of the so-called Prague Spring in 1968 brought a short-term attempt at reviving conventual life in the Czech Republic. After the invasion of the Warsaw Pack military forces and progressing normalisation in the 1970s, conventual communes underwent a process of destruction at the hands of secret church officers and the state security services, while the existence of male orders, including the recruitment of new members, research, publication of religious literature, was deemed illegal, and thus punishable under law. In the period of normalisation, in contrast to the 1950s and 1960s, there were not hundreds of cases of arrests, interrogations and convictions but there were individual trials. Only in the case of the Franciscans during the Vir campaign in 1983, and during other campaigns against them within the republic were dozens of order members prosecuted, of whom only five were sentenced in the Czech lands. Many of the cases that were brought to trial, despite serious interest from the state security services, ended in failure or reversal. In the 1970s and 1980s, the Communist authorities refrained from the previously widespread practices of interning monks in camps or nationwide manhunts. This was caused mainly by the negative reaction of the national opposition as well as international protests and coverage of those cases in the Western mass media. The persecution of male orders and the trials of their members continued in Czechoslovakia throughout the entire period of the Communist regime, with the exception of late 1960s. Since 1950 until the fall of the regime in 1989, with the exception of the period of the so-called Prague Spring, the activities of male orders were deemed undesirable and illegal. The long-term objective of the Communist regime was the complete destruction of conventual life in Czechoslovakia and to convert the society to atheism.

    Zgromadzenie Sióstr św. Elżbiety powstało w połowie XIX w. na Śląsku. Od II połowy XIX w. utworzono wiele placówek elżbietańskich również na terenie ówczesnych Prus Wschodnich i Zachodnich, w tym na terenie historycznej Warmii i Pomezanii. Siostry zakonne trudniły się głównie ambulatoryjną opieką nad chorymi, ale podejmowały też działalność charytatywną, opiekuńczą, edukacyjną i wychowawczą. Ich praca szczególnie na placówkach wiejskich wspierała a niejednokrotnie zastępowała ówczesne państwowe szpitalnictwo. Większość pomezańskich i warmińskich klasztorów sióstr św. Elżbiety po zakończeniu II wojny światowej przestało istnieć.
    The Congregation of the Sisters of St. Elizabeth was founded in the mid-nineteenth century in Silesia. From the second half of the 19th century, many Elizabethan foundations were established also in the area of the then East and West Prussia, including the historical Warmia and Pomezania. The nuns were mainly involved in the outpatient care of the sick, but they also undertook charitable, caring, educational, and upbringing activities. Their work, especially in rural facilities, supported and often replaced the then state hospitality. Most of the convents of the Sisters of St. Elizabeth in Pomezania and Warmia ceased to exist after the end of World War II.

    Katolickie duchowieństwo polskie odegrało znaczącą w rolę w kształtowaniu postaw społecznych w okresie przed wybuchem powstania styczniowego oraz podczas trwania tego zbrojnego zrywu narodu polskiego (także bezpośrednio w nim uczestnicząc). Ruch narodowy wsparła większość polskiego duchowieństwa niższego, które udział w powstaniu utożsamiało z obroną wiary. Znajduje to odzwierciedlenie zarówno w zachowanych w AGAD aktach polskiej Organizacji Narodowej, jak i spuściźnie kancelarii represyjnych urzędów rosyjskich działających w ramach tzw. Zarządu Wojenno-Policyjnego, powołanego w Królestwie Polskim do zwalczania ruchu rewolucyjnego, po ogłoszeniu w kraju 14 X 1861 r. stanu wojennego. Represje popowstaniowe szczególnie dotknęły księży i zakonników, uważanych za duchowych przywódców powstańców. Kilkudziesięciu z nich straciło życie w egzekucjach (przez rozstrzelanie lub powieszenie), a kilkuset skazano na katorgę albo zesłanie w głąb Rosji.
    Polish Catholic clergy played a significant role in shaping social attitudes in the period before and during the January Uprising (including direct participation in the uprising). The national movement was supported by the majority of lower Polish clergy, who identified participation in the uprising with the defence of faith. This is reflected both in the records of the Polish National Organization preserved at the Central Archives of Historical Records (AGAD), and in the legacy of the repressive offices of Russian corps operating under the so-called War and Police Board, set up in the Kingdom of Poland to fight the revolutionary movement after martial law was declared in the country on the 14th October 1861. The post-Uprising repressions particularly affected priests and monks, who were regarded as the spiritual leaders of the insurgents. Several dozen of them lost their lives in executions (by shooting or hanging), and several hundred were sentenced to hard labour and exile deep into Russia.

    Artykuł prezentuje z zastosowaniem metody historyczno-prawnej wymiar prawno-liturgiczny stałej posługi akolitatu kobiet w Kościele rzymsko-katolickim. W sposób skondensowany opisuje historię święceń akolitatu. Następnie przedstawia genezę, przebieg i skutki reformy święceń niższych przeprowadzonej w 1972 r. Jednym z jej skutków stało się wprowadzenie stałej posługi akolitatu dla wiernych świeckich mężczyzn. Proces aplikacji reformy święceń niższych w Polsce jest prezentowany w kontekście reformy liturgicznej przeprowadzanej zgodnie z dyrektywami Soboru Watykańskiego II. Nowelizacja kan. 230 § 1 KPK/83 promulgowana przez papieża Franciszka w 2021 r. wprowadza stałą posługę akolitatu dla wiernych kobiet, stanowiąc dopełnienie reformy święceń niższych papieża Pawła VI.
    Using the historical and legal method, the article presents the legal and liturgical dimension of the permanent ministry of female acolytes in the Roman Catholic Church. In a condensed way, it presents the legal and liturgical history of acolyte ordination. The author discusses the origin, progress, and consequences of the reform of minor orders instituted in 1972. One of its outcomes was the introduction of a permanent ministry of acolyte for the male laity. The implementation of the reform of minor orders in Poland is set against the background of the liturgical reform carried out in accordance with the directives of the Second Vatican Council. Complementing the reform of the minor orders of Pope Paul VI, the amendment to Can. 230 § 1 of the CIC/83 made by Pope Francis in 2021 introduces a permanent acolyte ministry for female members of the Church.

    Elbląg przed drugą wojną światową był dużym miastem, z rozwiniętym przemysłem i społecznością o charakterze robotniczym. W XIX w. szybko rozwijała się dzielnica miasta Kolonią Pangritza, w której osiedlili się ubodzy przybysze z różnych stron państwa pruskiego. Kolonia przez dziesięciolecia pod względem ekonomicznym i rozwoju infrastruktury mocno odbiegała od reszty miasta. Kumulowały się też na tym terenie wszystkie niekorzystne procesy związane z XIX-wieczną klasą robotniczą tj. analfabetyzm, bezrobocie, społeczne wykluczenie, brak opieki socjalnej i medycznej a nade wszystko bieda materialna. Duże znaczenie dla rozwiązywania tych problemów miało przybycie do Kolonii Pangritza w 1887 r. Zgromadzenia Sióstr św. Katarzyny. Zakonnice do 1945 r. prowadziły w klasztorze niewielki szpital, opiekę ambulatoryjną, przedszkole oraz kursy dokształcające i szkołę gospodarstwa domowego dla kobiet. Posługa katarzynek miała duże znaczenie dla rozwoju w Elblągu nowoczesnej opieki socjalnej.
    Elbląg was a large city before the Second World War, with developed industry and a working-class community. In the 19th-century, a district of the city called Pangritz Colony developed rapidly, in which poor newcomers from various parts of the Prussian state settled. For decades, the colony diverged sharply from the rest of the city in terms of economic and infrastructural development. All the unfavorable processes associated with the 19th-century working class, i.e. illiteracy, unemployment, social exclusion, lack of social and medical care and, above all, material poverty, were also accumulated in this area. The arrival of the Congregation of the Sisters of St Catherine in the Pangritz Colony in 1887 was of great importance in solving these problems. In the convent, until 1945, the nuns ran a small hospital, out-patient care, a kindergarten, and further education courses, and a domestic school for women. The ministry of the Sisters of St Catherine was of great importance for the development of modern social care in Elbląg.

    Niniejszy artykuł jest próbą ukazania życia religijnego katolików obrządku łacińskiego na Ukrainie w latach 1964-1991, a także przedstawienia polityki władz sowieckich wobec Kościoła rzymskokatolickiego. Na strukturę publikacji składa się 6 punktów. W pierwszym została przedstawiona sytuacja Kościoła łacińskiego na Ukrainie na tle zmian społeczno-politycznych w państwie sowieckim, które nastąpiły po odejściu Nikity Chruszczowa. W drugim z kolei zostały ukazana specyfika pracy duszpasterskiej na sowieckiej Ukrainie. Punkt trzeci prezentuje udział wiernych w życiu sakramentalnym, czwarty poświęcony został jednej z najważniejszych form życia modlitewnego katolików w ZSRS, jaką były tzw. liturgie bez kapłana, w piątym przestawiono działalność zakonów bezhabitowych i stowarzyszeń świeckich. Zarówno jedne, jak drugie mimo rozlicznych restrykcji ze strony władz państwowych, usiłowały wywrzeć znaczący wpływ na zachowanie tożsamości i praktyk religijnych oraz przekazanie ogniwa wiary młodszym pokoleniom. W ostatnim punkcie przeanalizowano sytuację katolików na Ukrainie w okresie rządów Gorbaczowa oraz wpływ „pieriestrojki” na odrodzenie Kościoła w tymże państwie.
    The article aims to present the religious life of Roman Catholics living in Ukraine in 1964–1991 and the policy pursued by Soviet authorities in relations to the Roman Catholic Church. The paper addresses six points. Section one discusses the situation of the Latin Church in Ukraine in the light of the socio-political changes in the Soviet state that ensued after Nikita Khrushchev left. Section two presents the specifics of pastoral work in Soviet Ukraine. Section three presents the participation of the faithful in sacramental life; section four is devoted to one of the most important forms of Catholic life in the USSR, so-called liturgies without a priest; the fifth presents the activities of unhabited orders and lay associations. Both, in spite of numerous restrictions imposed by the authorities, tried to heavily influence the maintenance of religious identity and worship, as well as trying to pass on the spirit of the faith to younger generations. Finally, the paper explores the situation of Ukrainian Catholics during the presidency of Mikhail Gorbachev, as well as the impact of the perestroika on the revival of the Church in Ukraine.
