    The aim of this paper is to collect and characterise Onufry Kopczyński’s prescriptive views, which are dispersed across his works, in particular grammar books. There are numerous studies regarding this grammarian; it is known that his scientific and teaching activity had a major influence on the shape of and attitudes towards Polish, yet no synthesis of his assumptions has been made. This paper presents the assumptions in a descriptive manner, and its summary is a synthetic itemised enumeration of the principles which, in the scholar’s opinion, should form the theory and practice of oral and written communication.

    This paper is based on an overview. I indicate there the essential development stages of prescriptive linguistics and I substantiate the thesis that development of linguistics is conditioned on practical needs. The main purpose of the studies of language has been its protection since the old days. This gave rise to descriptive and prescriptive grammar, which – by codifying the standard – influenced language condition and development to a certain extent. In the Polish environment, language is clearly treated as a social good and attempts to ensure its correctness are combined with a fight for the homeland, with the emotional element strongly manifest. The love of language, the fight for correctness, and the fight with errors are notions which have a long tradition in Polish linguistics and which have been used to this date. Prescriptive linguistics defined as the theory of language culture was formed in the Polish reality and gained its scientific status in the second half of the 20th century.

    Józef Mroziński is a well-known figure in linguistics. He is normally perceived as the first modern Polish grammarian–descriptivist, who endeavoured to formulate the rules governing the Polish language. His achievements have been an object of numerous studies and one could have the impression that everything has already been written about them. Yet, it is worth examining them once again as, apart from theoretical assumptions and description of the language, his studies present also prescriptive assumptions, which had not been applied until the 20th century. The aim of this paper is to reconstruct the assumptions.

    The aim of this paper is to present Tomasz Szumski’s prescriptive views. Dokładna nauka języka i stylu polskiego (Learning the Polish language and style thoroughly) is not a highly popular work, yet one deserving attention as it combines a grammatical description of the Polish language with the rules governing its use, including a lecture on communication behaviours. It is a systematic and a clearly prescriptive lecture of good Polish, where the author distinguishes three levels of command of the language. It includes not only a description of grammatical rules but also guidance regarding proper pronunciation, text construction and delivery. The rules formulated by T. Szumski are expressly oriented towards addressees with the aim to make them feel comfortable; they are also conditions of an effective utterance/statement. The study is embedded in the European grammatical and rhetorical tradition. Historical, national, literary, and aesthetic criteria, although unnamed directly, are clear in the author’s thinking about the language.
