    The Topos of Poland as the Jewish Cemetery in Hebrew Literature of the Third Generation The aim of this paper is to enumerate and describe possible strategies of realising the topos of Poland as the Jewish cemetery, present and significant in Hebrew literature and other Israeli texts of culture. Hebrew literature – along with Polish literature – is the main and natural reservoir of the Holocaust‑related topoi. Simultaneously, it presents a perspective distinct from the one visible in Polish literature and contains motifs absent in Polish authors’ works. Chosen examples point to the constant presence of the vision of Poland as a Jewish cemetery in the texts referring to the experience of the Shoah and the memory of it, while showing the multitude of applications of this motif. Popularity of the usage of the mentioned topos is emphasised by the demonstration of its presence within texts of a different generic origin – from poetry, through graphic novel and drama, to literary attempts of the participants of school pilgrimages to the memory places in Poland.     The paper aims at recognizing and describing the ways of deconstructing the topos of Poland as a Jewish necropolis, a process that in the last decade appears more and more often in the works of Israeli authors of the third generation after the Shoah. The generation concept – as I argue – can serve here as a useful tool for understanding the shift which occurred in the specific national context of Israeli Holocaust discourse and strongly influenced the image of Poland in Israeli literature and culture. Poland depicted as a Jewish necropolis has become one of the central motifs present in Israeli literary as well as the artistic canon of Shoah representations. As the central space where the Shoah occurred, Poland was obviously perceived as a land marked by death and formed exclusively by the experience of the Holocaust. However, in the aftermath of two major shifts that have occurred in the last decades: a meaningful change in the Israeli Holocaust discourse and the new reality of Poland after 1989, and also as a consequence of the growing time distance separating yet another generation from the events themselves, numerous authors born in Israel mostly in the 1970s and in the 1980s began approaching the above-mentioned motif critically. This tendency, one of the few typical for the third generation, is demonstrated either through the motif ’s deconstruction and subversive usage or, more radically, by employing the genre of alternate history and changing the place’s identity (e.g. Tel Aviv by Yair Chasdiel). The topos of Poland as a necropolis has therefore been turned into a part – or even a starting point – of the reflection on collective memory patterns (e.g. Kompot. The Polish-Israeli Comic Book), stereotypes (e.g. Bat Yam by Yael Ronen), and on the authors’ own roots and identity (e.g. The Property by Rutu Modan). By analyzing the abovementioned texts, I will explore the process of constant interaction occurring between collective and the individual memory, between the Israeli national perspective and Polish landscapes, between an author and space and, finally – between the category of the third generation and its representatives themselves.

    The article is a review of the book Kobiety i/a doświadczenie wojny. 1914- 1945 i później (‘Women and/towards the Experience of War. 1914-1945 and Afterwards’). The author analyzes general aspects of book’s composition, main assumptions and goals, focusing on the problem of the exact definition of the term „woman’s perspective” and its meaning in the light of war and post-war discourse.

    Tekst ma na celu analizę różnorodnych postaw wobec izraelskiego dyskursu zagładowego, prezentowanych przez izraelskich pisarzy i artystów określanych jako Mizrachim. Jak twierdzę, choć nie są oni związani z Szoa biograficznie, stanowią część pozagładowych generacji. Idea spoglądania na izraelskie konfrontacje z pamięcią o Zagładzie, choć już od dawna zakorzeniona w naturze tego doświadczenia, w tym konkretnym przypadku wskazuje dodatkowo na skalę wpływu, który temat Szoa wywiera na całe społeczeństwo. Stąd analizowane przeze mnie postawy są nierzadko skrajne: od akceptacji i prób zaadaptowania pamięci o Zagładzie jako części własnej tożsamości po krytykę statusu przynależnego tej pamięci w Izraelu jako wykluczającego i opresyjnego wobec tych, którzy nie mogą się z nią identyfikować. Niektórzy twórcy próbują także na nowo negocjować granice publicznego dyskursu i włączyć do niego również własną perspektywę.
    The paper aims at analyzing the variety of attitudes shown by the Israeli writers and artists of Mizrachi origins towards Israeli Holocaust discourse. I argue that although most of the authors are not connected to the Holocaust biographically, they also may be considered as part of what is called post-Holocaust generations. The concept of describing the Israeli authors’ confrontation with the Holocaust memory in terms of post-Holocaust generations is deeply rooted in the specific nature of this experience. In this particular case it might be perceived - above all - as a symptom of influence the Israeli Holocaust discourse has on the whole society. Therefore, the attitudes I describe range from acceptance expressed by attempts to adapt the memory of Shoah as a part of one’s own identity to criticizing the status of Holocaust narrative in Israel as exclusive and oppressive towards those who cannot identify with it. Some of the artists try also to renegotiate the boundaries of the public discourse and to include their own perspective into it.

    The article is a reflection on the topic of connection between a legal procedure and a performance and its role during the trial of Adolf Eichmann. After almost two decades of intentional silence surrounding the subject of the Holocaust survivors in the official Israeli discourse, during the trial of Adolf Eichmann, which took place in Jerusalem in 1961, for the first time the victims where given an opportunity to speak about their experiences to the public, wheras the Israeli society of early sixties, for the first time faced these stories. In the paper the author argues that the trial of Adolf Eichmann was not only a legal procedure, but also – in the light of strategies determining its final shape – a performance that was supposed to construct a new perspecitve of Holocaust narratives in Israel of early sixties.

    The aim of the article is to present and analyse texts whose authors – members of the Israeli Third Generation – refer in various ways to the phenomenon of pilgrimages to the memorial sites, attended by high school students for more than three decades. This phenomenon involves such questions as: the role of the Shoah in the Israeli collective narrative, the level of its institutional commemoration, relations between the act of memorialising the Holocaust and military activities, and lasting confidence in the experience of pilgrimage to Poland as part of the process of the Israeli youth’s coming of age. The texts included in these reflections are used to portray the multiplicity of possible attitudes adopted by authors towards such methods of commemorating the Shoah – from unconditional acceptance, through the belief in their inevitability, to outright criticism.
    Celem artykułu jest zaprezentowanie i analiza tekstów, których twórcy – przedstawiciele izraelskiego trzeciego pokolenia – na różne sposoby odwołują się do zjawiska pielgrzymek do miejsc pamięci, odbywanych przez młodzież licealną od przeszło trzech dekad. Zjawisko to skupia w sobie kwestie takie jak: rola Zagłady w izraelskiej narracji zbiorowej, stopień jej instytucjonalnego upamiętniania, częste związki między upamiętnianiem Szoa a wątkami militarnymi i trwałym wpisaniem doświadczenia pielgrzymki do Polski w proces dojrzewania izraelskiej młodzieży. Teksty włączone do rozważań mają za zadanie unaocznić wielość możliwych postaw przyjmowanych przez twórców wobec takich metod upamiętniania Szoa – od bezwarunkowej ich akceptacji, przez przekonanie o ich nieuchronności, aż po zdecydowaną krytykę.

    This review of Work in Progress. Konfrontacje trzeciego pokolenia po Zagładzie, a multiauthored volume consisting of seven chapters, focuses on how the third generation after the Shoah has been read in Poland and abroad, and, in this respect, it emphasises the innovative character of the book discussed. Work in Progress is an interdisciplinary volume comprised of various perspectives; even though it tackles issues not well known in Poland, it follows recent academic trends. Undoubtedly, the merits of this publication include: coherence, surprising dynamism, distrust in stereotypical thinking, timing and its focus.
    W recenzji składającej się z siedmiu szkiców pracy zbiorowej Work in Progress. Konfrontacje trzeciego pokolenia po Zagładzie autor wskazuje na dotychczasowe ujęcia tematu trzeciego pokolenia na świecie i w Polsce oraz podkreśla nowatorstwo omawianej książki. Reprezentuje ona różne perspektywy, jest interdyscyplinarna, a przy tym niezwykle aktualna, mimo że traktuje często o zjawiskach słabo w kraju znanych. Do niewątpliwych zalet recenzowanej monografii należą: niebywały dynamizm, burzenie wszelkiego rodzaju schematów myślowych, trzymanie ręki „na pulsie”, a przy tym zachowanie koherentności.
