The paper is dedicated to recognising Sarmatian motifs in poetic collections of Jerzy Harasymowicz. The analysis of selected works proves that the poet had an excellent preparation for interpreting old literature. Poems written by Harasymowicz are the evidence of both his familiarity with aesthetic conventions of the Baroque period and his knowledge of historical themes of the 17th century. Historism was treated by the writer as a reservoir of motifs and characters, which were a point of reference for the diagnosis of the current political situation in the 70s of the last century.

The study deals with several hundred letters of Bohdan Chmielnicki from the years1648-1657. They come from the most active period of the Hetman of the Zaporozhye armyand they both testify to his excellent diplomatic sense as the chief of Zaporozhye, and they area source enabling researchers to reconstruct his Outlook on life, system of values, manner ofexercising power and conducting foreign atfairs.The preserved letters are in Polish, Russian and Latin. The exchange with Polish officialswas conducted exclusively in Polish, which clearly indicates the Cossack s close links withPolish culture. Although the letters are not markedly artistic in their style, they exposeChmielnicki as the author conversant with the convention of ars epistolandi. Thus paradoxically,the Polish language of majority of the great chief s letters allows for their author s inclusionin the group of Old Polish authors.

Opis:
We present a patient with intractable and debilitating pain secondary to chronic pancreatitis who was effectively treated with total pancreatectomy with islet autotransplantation (TPIAT). Islets engrafted into his liver significantly contributed to improved blood glucose control and quality of life. Subsequently, the patient developed alcohol related acute liver failure and en bloc liver and pancreas transplantation was performed to replace the failing liver with engrafted islets. Pancreas transplantation was required to resolve his life-threatening severe hypoglycemic episodes. Herein, we detail an innovative and multidisciplinary management of this complex medical problem.

The research on the epistolary art in the First Polish Republic is certainly one of the more difficult challenges. Such research requires extraordinary skills, sometimes the manuscripts are barely legible, while the relations between the writer and the reader were often complicated (clientism was not, after all, a one directional phenomenon) and the aggrandizment of a given letter’s addressee was often proportional to the sender’s apparent self-humiliation, thus the social conventions were interwoven with individual preferences. The recently published volume of Epistolografia should be seen within its context, that is, the earlier two volumes of the “Biblioteka Tradycji” (“Library of Tradition”) series. In this series, we find studies and analyses belonging to history, cultural history, and history of literature. The first series contained a number of academic luxury editions of early Polish literature. Indeed, those early letters remain an inexhaustible source of knowledge on the culture of those times.

Polish intervention in Russia during the Time of Troubles
Opis:
The essay discusses Jakub Sobieski’s diaries and memories, which belong to the finest specimens of such writing in Polish Baroque. The diary and memoirs of the Moscow campaign of 1617-1618 have survived in only a few copies, with the most important ones in Biblioteka Czartoryskich in Cracow. Reconstruction of Prince Władysław’s struggle for the Russian crown is mostly based on a handwritten testimony called Diariusz ekspedycyjej moskiewskiej dwuletniej królewica Władysława A. D. 1617 [The Diary of the Two-Year Moscow Campaign by Royal Prince Władysław in 1617]. The events described in the diary span from April 5th, 1617 to December 28th, 1618. The author has arranged the material chronologically, focusing on the text as historical evidence. The conclusion of the text, where Sobieski quotes a fragment of Tacitus’s Annals, points out to the argumentative function of the work, which was supposed to explain to Poles (the king, the sejm and senate, the nobility) that commissaries were right in signing the Truce of Deulino, regarding the safety of the homeland threatened by Turks and Tatars, and the budgetary difficulties of the Crown and Lithuania. The second work by Sobieski is more of a Baroque memoir, composed as a temporal sequence (some fragments have the structure of diary). The author reconstructs the events of the Moscow campaign, beginning with the death of tsar Ivan the Terrible (1584), and leads the narrative to the end of 1618, when the Truce of Deulino. The work is characterized by greater coherence in presentation of facts, their selection, and a more general point of view, pointing out to the failure of Polish dynastic policy. Sobieski seems to be critical of the Polish intervention and the Polish raison d’état in this respect. He is also critical of the young prince’s campaign of 1617-1618; he was a commissioner for treaties with Moscow during the campaign.

This article is an attempt to identify history in an early modern text belonging to the Hindi literary tradition. The theoretical foundations that enable such a venture are to be found in the narrativist philosophy of history, since it afforded equal status to those discourses about the past which do not meet the narrow criteria of world-history. V. Rao, D. Shulman and S. Subrahmanyam, in their work on South India, proposed that an analysis of texture allows history to be identified in those compositions that do not belong to the Western tradition of historiography. It is worth verifying whether their method applies to other literary traditions of India. The same researchers undermined the legitimacy of talking about prose as the only possible way of writing history – by claiming that history is written in the dominant literary genre of a particular community, space and time. Their hypotheses are hereby confronted with passages from Bhūṣan’s Śivrājbhūṣaṇ (1673).

Preventing and combating the phenomenon of terrorism requires an effective and systematic application of all the means accessible to a democratic country. The Border Guard, as one of the essential components of an anti-terrorist system, possesses a set of clear and legislatively established solutions for the realization of activities related to the identification and prevention of terrorist threats. The Border Guard, similar to the police service, is vested with and uses its powers to implement sophisticated methods of operational and intelligence work, such as: secret operational control, controlled delivery, controlled purchase, network of personal and non-personal sources of information, operational funds, operational analysis systems, operational surveillance and technology and special operations. The author describes the activities undertaken by the Border Guard within the scope of its statutory task, namely conducting activities as part of identifying and combating terrorist threats.
Zapobieganie zjawisku terroryzmu i jego zwalczanie wymaga efektywnego i systematycznegostosowania wszelkich środków, jakie dostępne są państwu demokratycznemu. Straż Graniczna,jako jeden z istotnych komponentów systemu antyterrorystycznego posiada czytelne,ustawowo umocowane rozwiązania do realizacji czynnosci z zakresu rozpoznawania i przeciwdziałania zagrożeniom terroryzmem oraz bliźniacze służbom policyjnym, uprawnienia do stosowania wyrafinowanych metod pracy operacyjno-rozpoznawczej, takich jak m.in.: kontrolę operacyjną, przesyłkę niejawnie nadzorowaną, zakup kontrolowany, siatkę osobowych i nieosobowych źródeł informacji, fundusz operacyjny, system analizy operacyjnej, obserwację i technikę operacyjną, operacje specjalne, z których z powodzeniem korzysta. Autor opisuje działania podejmowane przez Straż Granicznż w zakresie jej ustawowego zadania, polegającego na prowadzeniu czynności w zakresie rozpoznawania i przeciwdziałania zagrożeniom terroryzmem.

Opis:
Over the past half-century, an expansion of agriculture on lands is observed, followed with increased intensification through larger fields of monoculture crops and application of high level of inputs, that icreases the pressures agriculture sets upon the environment. Raising awareness of consumers and environmentalists led to the promotion of several alternative farming practices, including integrated food and non-food systems (IFNS). Here we explore the potential of different kinds of IFNS systems in delivering environmental benefits, focusing on preserving soil functions as the form of land use limiting the loos of soil by water erosion. Six successfully implemented IFNS systems located in UK, Poland, Italy, Denmark and Romania, were taken as a baseline to investigate their potential impact onto lowering soil loss by water erosion in their respective NUTS3 regions, when they would be applied widely on a regional scale. The results of analyses performed within GIS systems based upon European datasets revealed, that altogether the highest potential of limiting the area of soil erosion exceeding 0,5 Mg ha-1y-1 by an IFNS existing in a particular NUTS is observed in Romania, where 531km2 may be protected effectively with exiting silvopastoral system, while applied in a longer term on non-pastoral land cover classes it could provide effective protection for another 1362 km2. Second largest influence can be achieved in Polish NUTS region, where 125 km2 may be taken into protection directly and an another 1140 km2 may be transformed into agroforestry systems to lower the risk of soil erosion by water. In all investigated regions, a wide introduction of IFNS, that are already proven to be economically successful, would decrease soil loss considerably on existing land cover classes similar to IFNS systems covering 4927km2, while potentially on all agricultural land up to 8854km2.
