Opis:
This study involves the integration of multiple thematic datasets for landslide susceptibility assessment through spatial prediction models. The proposed methodology has been applied in the Bystrzanka-Biczyska area (Beskid Niski Mts., Carpathians Mts., Poland), characterised by a very high density of landslides. The susceptibility assessment has been based on an indirect bivariate statistical analysis ("Weights of Evidence" modelling technique, Bonham-Carter et al., 1989) performed in order to predict the occurrence of an event (landslide) where well-known evidences (predictor variables) are available. According to the relative importance of each evidence, a landslide susceptibility map has been produced. Observing final prediction results, it is concluded that the susceptibility map gives useful information both on present instability of the area and its possible future evolution in agreement with the morphological evolution of the area.

Opis:
Landslides are one of the most prominent processes degrading the Beskidy Mts. slopes. Susceptibility assessment is based on the detailed mapping of the Dukla commune (235 km2) at the scale 1: 10,000 in frames of the project Landslide Counteracting System. The terrain affected by landslides is 19.59 km2, which is 8.34% of the researched area. The largest number of landslides can be found in the Beskid Dukielski Mts. area, where nearly 78% of all landslide areas are concentrated. Analysis of landslide-causing factors was performed using the index of entropy method. The following five factors were considered: lithology, slope inclination, slope aspect, distance to faults, and distance to drainage. The most important role in the development of mass movements in the study area is played by slope inclination (0.0079) and lithology of siliciclastic flysch (0.0066). The method applied also contributed to devising a landslide susceptibility map of considerable accuracy at 90.5%. The analyses of the landslide factors have proven that understanding of geology and landforms is not only of cognitive significance, but adds to practical applications in spatial management. The studies confirmed usefulness of large-scale mapping of landslides and applying statistical methods and GIS techniques in the spatial analysis of landform transformations. The obtained landslide susceptibility map can be a basis for assessing landslide risk. High and very high landslide susceptibility classes cover nearly 50% of the study area.

Opis:
The article presents the results of the dendrogeomorphological study of the activity of the Sawicki landslide, located in the Beskid Niski Mts (Polish Flysch Carpathians). The study was conducted within two study sites in the lower part of the landslide. The landslide movements were dated using the dendrogeomorphological method, basing on the eccentricity indicators calculated for the two coniferous species, i.e. Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and silver fir (Abies alba). It was found landslide activity in years: 1899, 1901, 1905, 1910, 1913–1914, 1920–1921, 1929–1931, 1935, 1937, 1945, 1977, 1979, 1981, 1984–1985, 1990, 1992–1993, 1997, 2003–2004, 2006, 2010–2012. The greatest activity was characterized for the northern part of the study site B and the south-western slopes of the Szklarki stream valley (study site A). Studies have shown only a partial dependence between precipitation and landslide episodes. The data were confronted with the results of dendrogeomorphological studies, conducted in the northern and central parts of the landslide. The results demonstrate the significant complexity of mass movements within large-area landslide.

Opis:
Geological setting and precipitation triggers seem to be obvious parameters controlling landslides, but their relation to individual sliding processes has not been clear. We take on interdisciplinary approach (combining Earth science methods with an engineer ing-geotechnical approach) to examine sliding processes in the Kawiory landslide in the Polish Carpathians. Field parameters were obtained from inclinometer monitoring, meteorological records, piezometer data and geomechanical tests. Numerical simulation of the landslide development was performed, both for the reconstruction of the internal deformation phenomena on the slope and for approximate prediction of its future behaviour. An empirical formula describing the relationship between the depth of groundwater level (GWL) and precipitation is presented. The case study showed that for the ob served quasi-continuous creep, the depth and in particular the intensity of GWL fluctuations might be crucial.

Opis:
The main aim of the research was to study trees growth responses to the changing environmental conditions and to assess the degree of damage to trees taking into consideration their secondary crown. Based the material from plots established in 12 silver fir stands (tab.), chronologies were developed for trees in various age classes (fig. 1). 1950 saw a downward trend in the radial growth that continued till 1985, to be followed by an upturn lasting till 2000, when the radial growth stabilised. No significant changes in tree−growth were observed in the group of the youngest trees. Three types of growth response to environmental changes (positive, neutral and negative) were distinguished in the last three 15−year−long periods. In years 1970−1984 the largest proportion of firs indicated negative growth responses, while firs with positive response dominated in the period 2000−2014 (fig. 2). The period 1970−2014 saw a steady increase in the mean value of growth responses. The assessment of the top−crown growth (feature B) showed that more than 50% of the trees showed inhibited growth (fig. 3). The assessment of tree vitality (feature C) confirmed the dominance of trees with moderate crown vitality. The vitality of the secondary crowns (Zw) situated below the primary crowns (Zp) of firs was assessed on the basis of crown density and its length (formula [1]). Incorporating Zw in the assessment of tree damage (formula [2]) resulted in an increase in the vitality of the whole crown (Z) (fig. 4). Based on the defoliation, 73% of trees were found to be within damage class 2 (fig. 5). Another method of damage to trees determination was adopted (formula [3]) to assess the damage to fir stands and showed that the largest proportion of trees was with moderate damage (fig. 6). The damage index values obtained with this method were lower compared to the method that considers the defoliation exclusively. Even lower index values were obtained while using the method based on both damage index W and tree−growth response. Of the three discussed damage assessment methods, the most accurate is the method based on damage index Wz, taking into account the growth response of the entire crown (Z).

The Mroczna Cave is one of the longest caves in the Beskid Niski Mts., located on the south-western slopes of Mt Kornuty, along the main scarp of the landslide. According to the geomechanical criterion, it is dilation cave, where extension has played a major role. Morphotectonic analysis indicates that the main gravitational movement was of a toppling nature but there were also rotation around the vertical axis as well as a backward rotation. The relatively large cave depth (15.5 m) and its shape (cross-section of its passages) indicate that it was formed along a new gravitational cutting surface of the rock massif, associated with joint sets.

Opis:
On the SW slopes of the Mt. Kornuty (Magura Wątkowska mountain range in the Beskid Niski Mts.) is located one of the largest landslide areas in the Polish Flysch Carpathians. The morphotectonic analysis performed using contour diagrams and rose directional diagrams, made it possible to determine the direction of gravity mass movement. In total, over than 2500 measurements of the spatial orientation of joint surfaces were made within the landslide zone. Changing the direction of the tectonic anisotropy of the in situ and ex situ forms allowed conducting the morphogenetic analysis, i.e. specifying the types of gravitational movements. Besides the commonly occurring toppling, also rockfalls, rotation around the horizontal or vertical axis, and antithetical displacements (thelistric type) were observed. The combination of several types of gravitational movements of different age allows us to unequivocally say that it is a complex type of landslide.

Opis:
The study presents a method of planning species composition of forest stands in mountain areas on the example of Beskid Niski Mts. (south−eastern Poland). The focus was on the species composition of forest stands growing in different conditions, taking into account the type of forest habitat and terrain characteristics: altitude, exposition and slope. The research was based on data stored in the Information System of the State Forests. We used modified growth model for data processing and calculation of site index for the forests older than 60 years. The Beskid Niski Mts. are covered mostly by European beech (33.8%), silver fir (28.3%) and Scots pine (18.9%). Taking into account exclusively the productive capacity of individual forest stands, fir and spruce would be the most desirable species in analysed region. The Beskid Niski Mts. are characterized by a very small diversity of the habitat with domination of mountain fresh deciduous forest (LGśw, 92.1% of the area). We divided analysed region into four altitudinal zones that vary greatly in fraction of afforested area. Beech dominates in all zones and its share increases from the foothills to montane zone (fig. 5). Basing on a digital terrain model, the areal share of 10 landforms was determined for each stand and altitudinal zone (fig. 8). This enabled more detailed planning of species composition. However, it required the adoption of six specific assumptions including the need to maintain a suitable proportion of all tree species growing in the mountains, specifically the main forest tree species: spruce, fir and beech. The 5−stage project (preliminary, historical, current, planning, verification stages) consisting of planning species composition uses, in stage 4, detailed information on landforms. The project assumes that the fragments of forests where trees are expected to grow fast will be earmarked for endangered species. The model sees the need of planting the weaker tree species to be present in the forest ecosystems of the Beskid Niski. The proposed project will enable foresters−practitioners to plan the forest species composition for each of the forest districts in the Beskid Niski quickly. Such a programme might also be an integral part of the growth model of forests useful for forecasting and increasing timber resources.
