    How the Journal d’un curé de campagne is written is intimately linked to the night because of the narrator’s insomnia. We will demonstrate that this night is the expression of an inner night, through the carmelite mysticism of John of the Cross. The writing is purified by the silence and anguish of the priest's mystical night: we will see that his writing becomes a prayer, that is to say, the hosting of divine and human voices in silence, based on Jean-Louis Chrétien’s phenomenological approach of prayer. This idea of writing will allow us to understand the relationship of Bernanos himself to his own writing: this nightly writing listens and gives voice to those who have none.

    From Sous le Soleil de Satan to Monsieur Ouine, Bernanos’ novels are characterized by the emergence of ‘supernatural silence(s)’ (Bernanos, 2015 : 679), which can prove to be disturbing. The brutal sign of evil’s appeance in the narrative limits in most cases the character to silence, to verbal incapacity. Indeed, evil has the strength to hold thought and speech in check. That is the reason why the characters that are racked by evil make good use of language so that they don’t say anything genuine nor honest. Bernanos’ writing succeds in defining these silences thanks to numerous ellipsis as well as things that remain unmentioned, embarrased silences, thus emphasizing the presence of the supernatural. Punctuation in particular takes an important part in creating breaks, switchovers within sentences as well as in the narrative. These silences show off an experience that cannot be told. As a consequence, a true rhetoric of what is unspeakable is at stake in Bernanos’ novels. The use of adjectives made up with privative prefixes, indefinite pronouns, rough phrases and other figures of what is unspoken, contribute to explaining evil’s unbelievable experience.

    Opis:
    An author is a Polish professor of literature at the Jagiellonian Unversity in Cracow. The author shows in her book entitled The Reading "Sacred" some essays on literature and "sacred", especially she describes some Polish poetry and prose and literary letters from 20th century. She focuses on the problem hermeneutics of a text, comparatistics of literature and methodology of literature. There are many chapters on theme Polish poetry or prose, e.g. about such authors as Stanisław Barańczak, Teresa Ferenc, Konstanty Ildefons Gałczyński, Julia Hartwig, Zbigniew Herbert, Zbigniew Jankowski, Wojciech Kudyba, Maria Kuncewiczowa, Czesław Miłosz, Joanna Pollakówna, Tadeusz Różewicz, Wisława Szymborska, Marcin Świetlicki, Jan Twardowski, Karol Wojtyła, Adam Zagajewski. There are some essays about foreign (e.g. French, German, Russian) authors of literature in the context of ‘sacred’: Paul Auster, Georges Bernanos, Josif Brodski, Hermann Hesse, Thomas Merton, Rainer Maria Rilke.
