Gottfried Benn, poems, intertextuality, modernism, German poetry
Opis:
Benn‘s manifold and excessive intertextuality can be interpreted as his way of writing modern poetry. In comparison with traditional “Erlebnislyrik” he achieves modernity through an alienation of the world using the terminology of positivist medicine in his expressionistic period. Later, face to the disoriented Weimar society he, like many contemporaries, is clinging to the old meanings and forms of myth. During the 50ies he gets involved in the new perception of phraseology of mass media and the appeal of modern everyday life. The return to the lyrical tradition during the 30ies and 40ies is a well-directed borrowing to confirm his own way under the threat of the Third Reich. Thus Benn creates his modern poetry by referring to the insights, experiences, and expressions of other authors that transgress the existing limits in literature and poetry.

Opis:
The novel "Mephisto" is one of the most well-known texts by Klaus Mann. Its fame results not only from its literary virtuosity, but also and primarily from the enormous media attention which was caused by the novel’s publication. The decision of the Federal Constitutional Court, in which it dealt with the relationship between freedom of art and other constitutionally guaranteed rights of individuals, launched the unprecedented career of this novel. This article describes Klaus Mann’s political views and their development in the 1920s during the time when the National Socialist movement was strengthening and the writer made the decision to emigrate. The essay deals with the circumstances of creating the novel considering both biographical and political issues. The novelist is described from the perspective of the reality of the 1930s during the National Socialist regime and the time after his emigration. The concern of the article is not a literary analysis of the novel, but to take a look at the novelist’s development up until the moment of finishing his work as a protest against National Socialism. Another goal of the essay is to analyze the decision of the Federal Constitutional Court, which regards the balance between freedom of art and other basic rights. Considering the synergy of both methodological approaches and the interdisciplinary view on the problem, the article represents a novel attempt to give a complex view on the relationship between art (literature) and the reality of a totalitarian state and between the relationship art–state in the conditions of a democratic state.

Opis:
The paper is mainly concerned with Gottfried Benn’s complex attitude to the state and history. By means of introductory prefigurations, such as existential tensions related to the conflict between Protestant ethics and modern aesthetics, there emerges Benn’s difficult and complex relation to the state as such, seen as a product of history, and to its particular examples, starting from the Second Reich until the initial phase of West Germany. Friedrich Nietzsche’s philosophy, and in particular the philosophy of art, is of great importance in this context. This issue is discussed using Benn’s key works such as Roman des Phänotyp or Doppelleben. Benn’s literary and life self-creations played a vital role in his relations with the political reality and the state, which is discussed at the end of this analysis. His ambivalent relation to early West Germany has a strong biographical basis, i.e. his involvement with the history of the Nazi Germany on the one hand, and on the other – the period of his literary fame at the end of his life.
