Opis:
Utopianism of the symbolic exchange modelsThe paper takes the perspective of Fredric Jameson’s thinking about utopia (from his Archeologies of the future) and is an attempt to answer the question of the status of the theories of symbolic exchange (Baudrillard, Goux) understood as specific iterations of the utopian thinking or the utopian impulse. Jameson sees today the power of the utopian narratives in the alternatives they give to the third stage of capitalism. That is why the main problem presented in this paper is precisely the alternative vision of social and economic relations projected by the researchers referring to the models of symbolic exchange in the primitive societies. Reading the concepts of Goux and Baudrillard in the light of the Jameson’s theory of utopia is to show their proximity with thinking about magical and religious practices on one hand, and, on the other hand, to the fundamental models of social relations in the primitive and ahistorical societies present in the fable and fantasy. These primitive societies believe in the possibility of exchange with the dead and do not surrender to the model of economy governed by the general equivalents: the phallus, the sovereign, the sign, the money.

Meter as a simulacrum This text presents an attempt to conceptualize the poetics of versification in Kamil Brewiński’s poetic book Clubbing (Kraków 2013), with the background of the critical reception of the book, by the view given by the theory of simulation by Jean Baudrillard. The article is based on two unpublished conference speeches presented at conference on “Twenty First Century in Literature”, 2014) and “Poetry – Culture – Poetry. Contemporary Perspectives”, 2015). Some excerpts were used before in my doctoral dissertation (2015).

Opis:
W swym artykule Tokarz podejmuje refleksję nad filmową wyobraźnią w filozofii i socjologii Jeana Baudrillarda.
In his article, Tokarz reflects on cinematic imagination in philosophy and sociology of Jean Baudrillard. He confronts Baudrillard’s research hypotheses and social theories, on basis of which he claimed membership of the postmodernist movement, with many varieties of contemporary cinema. Baudrillard writing method is compared with creative method of the French New Wave director - Jean-Luc Godard. Tokarz analyses Baudrillard’s references to the avant-garde of high modernism and his view of America through the prism of films in his philosophical report America. The author also considers the question of nostalgic films, the application of Baudrillard’s theory of seduction, confrontation of his ideas with the film Paris, Texas and the paroxysms of media system. The key hypothesis concerns the possibility of manipulating history thanks to the excellent operationality of digital recording. In the world of Baudrillard all utopias and dystopias come true. What remains is the nostalgia for authenticity.

Opis:
The article is an attempt to reconstruct the topographic imagination of Jean Baudrillard. The author interprets his essay, America, placing him in the context of Visions from San Francisco Bay by Czesław Miłosz. Reading America through a spatial perspective allows us not only to see the spatial imagery used to describe the landscape of the New World but also to indicate its hidden symbolism. In other words, through topographical imagery, Baudrillard verbalizes judgments about culture and history. Thus, space becomes an epistemological metaphor and the author’s own philosophical dictionary.

Opis:
Jean Baudrillard and Pierre Bourdieu are two well known French social philosophers that have at least couple of things in common. They were born in the same social conditions, they grew up as rebels, and they participated in Revolution of 1968. They also participated in the very same formal problems of the research work. The problem is, what happens when one introduces same difficulties in one’s ideas as those, that he was searching to neutralize. Bourdieu criticizes the system of education, art, culture in general, because it contributes to reproduction and conservation of social hierarchy. However, he's doing it using quite similar kind of high developed concepts, that he had criticized before. Baudrillard also detests modern social habits. Most of all, so called hyperreality, that manifests itself as a lack of real connection between things and concepts or ideas related to them. Nonetheless Baudrillard seems to adore hyperreality also, as a dimension of game, seduction. Bourdieu, as well as Baudrillard, appears as an adept of pataphysics — according to the definition given to this notion by Baudrillard, based on novels of Alfred Jarry.

This paper provides an overview of selected philosophical implications connected with the topic of a virtual world as a simulacrum of anthropocentrism. The paper discusses also the impact of the implications on the considerations of the dilemma to what extent the users of a virtual world remain obedient to their moral values and how the virtual world influences being a human in the real world. The concept of a virtual world was initiated by a human because the human being`s intentions are to fulfill his own needs, to cross his individual barriers and, while attempting to his own development, to reach for what is for him instinctively attainable. Human aspirations of creating a virtual world, a look-alike world, emerge finalized but the only residuary conundrum is to assuage one`s desires for finding the good and for defending one`s moral values. A human being is in the centre of existence and is the issue of valence inasmuch as he is ‘the master’ of the world, and, according to the paradigm of anthropocentrism, he is able to achieve what he yearns for. Therefore, it is advisable to contemplate the issue whether a human being desired the virtual world to arise or whether he just wanted to desire the world in his omnipotence. Another alternative for the discussion is to ponder over a human craving for creating a new, better version of a real world and for his subconscious attempts at its annihilation. Because human cognitive faculties – his thoughts and needs are biologically conditioned, the article analyses also a phantasm of a human domination over the real world through the virtual world and a human being`s negation of moral values as well as his control of the limitations of the real world.

Opis:
The science fiction of Philip Kindred Dick is a manifestation of the unprecedented challenges of man in modern times. This essay is a sociological study of Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric sheep? based on Michel Foucault’s concepts as well as Jean Baudrillard, and Thomas Mathiesen’s theories about power and its techniques. The library research method is used to trace some elements of the technology of power and the sociopolitical issues in multiple layers of the novel which reflects implicitly the nineteen sixties’ mood. The high-tech society of it is watched, controlled and conducted through advanced devices, media, consumerism, and pseudo- religion doctrine. The Foucauldian surveillance and panopticism are discussed in this carceral society where the minds of the individuals are routinely inspected in search for deviancy; and where their moods are regulated and their feeling are shared voluntarily. In addition to panopticism, due to the important role of the media in the novel, Mathiesen’s synopticism is discussed. The man’s efforts for compensating what he had destroyed i.e. the devastated nature result in Baudrillard’s concepts of hyperreality and simulation that blur the line between real and unreal. Do Androids Dream illuminates the revolutionary mood of nineteen sixties, the uprising of the youth and marginal groups against the prevalent beliefs and values. It also reflects the anxieties of atomic age, cold war paranoia, and McCarthyism. In the novel, the individuals are ubiquitously surveilled and mercilessly conducted; the truth does not have an existence of its own, and it’s just part of the regime.

Opis:
In his famous book The Consumer Society: Myths and Structures, Jean Baudrillard refers to the model of exchange defined by the myth of the pact with the Devil. The things we sell: our reflections in the mirror, our shadows, or the products of our work do not remain safely separate from us, but instead turn against us and take their revenge, sometimes even bringing us to self-destruction. However, the French philosopher claims that, nowadays, the tragedy of the subject haunted by its spectre is no longer relevant as the subject poses a spectrum, and all transcendence is lost in the order of signs. The structure of the myth about the pact with the Devil appears in Murong Xuecun’s novel Most Die of Greed. In post-reform and opening-up China, an average young man meets a mysterious older millionaire and gets involved in a risky game, in which unbridled consumption leads to degeneration and, eventually, gruesome death. As a 70 hou (post-1970, born in the 1970s) writer, Murong Xuecun addresses the transformations in his generation’s attitudes and values caused by rapid changes in both material and ideological spheres of their lives.

Opis:
The paper analyses the category of neo-catastrophism. Postmodern society has launched the mechanisms of self-destruction which are now working not only in interpersonal and communicative relationships, but also in the realms of axiology, ethics and even ontology. According to the author, the main aspects of Jean Baudrillard’s and Jürgen Habermas’ philosophy can be interpreted as containing such neo-catastrophic message. However, as the forerunner of neo-catastrophism in philosophy the author points out Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz (Witkacy), especially his theory of metaphysical feelings and their disappearance in mass society. Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, known among the philosophy critics as neohumanistic catastrophist, has foreseen many categories which are typical for Habermas’ and Baudrillard’s writings. The neo-catastrophic mechanisms has a serious consequences for the condition of postmodern subject, the more so because the main part of the neocatastrophism is the strong conviction that there is no escape. The author, besides the main thesis mentioned above, highlights some common features between Baudillard’s and Habermas’ conceptions.
