Opis:
This paper treatises Polish sociology of borderlands (mostly Eastern) as the rich resources of metaphors of borders, especially national and political ones. It shows how these metaphors are linked to different sociological imagery-modern and postmodern. Its aim is to reconstruct analytical strategies and research projects from this sub-discipline, focusing on metaphors of borders. These strategies and projects are based on very different approaches to metaphors. The first operation is an instrument which the theoretician uses to reconstruct the theoretical typology of borders and borderlands. The second operation is a tool which the researcher uses to reflect more deeply on the empirical data concerning individual and collective reactions to borders and borderlands. The third operation is a narrative tool used by examinees who inhabit the borderlands. The paper provides a broad and intensive discussion of the functions of different metaphors about borders in relation to the different intellectual approaches to problems of borderlands and borders. It stresses the needs for equal treatment in Polish sociology of borderland problems of borderlands and problems of national borders. Especially emphasizes the positive functions of academic interest in borders metaphors in this scientific treatment. Generally speaking, this analyse enhances many links between sociology of borderlands and cultural anthropology and is closely connected to the question of where these intellectual operations on metaphors belong in the project of an interdisciplinary approach to borders and borderlands.

Polish Borderlands Literature
Opis:
Kresy Wschodnie Rzeczypospolitej były niegdyś sercem narodu polskiego, któremu tamtejsza ziemia wydała największych orędowników i czcicieli jej piękna. Nie można zrozumieć polskiej kultury bez poznania Kresów i tego, co je tworzyło. Warto o tym przypominać, zwłaszcza młodym Polakom, którzy często nie mają świadomości, że tam kiedyś była Polska.
The Eastern Borderlands of the Polish Commonwealth used to be a Polish heartland where some of the greatest Polish admirers of the Borderlands' beauty hail from. One cannot properly understand the Polish culture without getting to know the Eastern Borderlands and that which they consisted in. One should remember it and remind of it especially young Poles, who often seem to fail to realize that the Borderlands used to be a part of Poland.

Opis:
The nationality issues of interwar Poland’s eastern borderlands (Kresy) have been a popular theme in post-war Polish historiography. A considerable part of this historiography has continued the debates of interwar experts and political activists, which revolved around the two interwar censuses and the question of ethnic identity. For this reason, scholars have given priority to statistical evidence in order to determine the national belonging and categorize the inhabitants of the eastern borderlands into particular ethnic and national groups. What is more, they have drawn their conclusions on the assumption that identity is objectively definable by blood ties. I argue that peasant identity in these borderlands was driven by ‘localness’, that is, a specific symbolic universe, set of values and conventions typical of peasant culture. Thus, identity cannot be comprehensively described through ethnic categories alone. In the article, I explore some practices of localness such as the malleable roles people ascribed to others in everyday life. For large groups of peasants, they were of vital importance in the reception of nationbuilding projects.

Cooperation in terms of Afro-regions should largely be based on the experience of Euro-regions, but necessarily must take into account African specifics, especially through the use of a far greater degree of informal cross-border economy and trade. Borderlands as regions of cooperation constitute the realization of the idea of integration from the bottom. This will foster a process of open borders, which in turn will lead to a real acceleration of the integration processes. Moreover, on both sides of the border / boundaries it is possible to start the process of regional identity, especially among the young generation, which would be a kind of “resurrection” of existing links from the pre-colonial past.

Opis:
The paper offers a comprehensive, synthetic account of the discourse on the subject of the Polish Eastern Borderland over the course of the last hundredyears. It analyses the ways in which the understanding of the notion of Kresy and “borderland”, as well as the strategies for presenting the term, have changed, including attempts to replace this category with other terms. Furthermore, the paper characterises the dynamics concerning the transformations of situational contexts that emerged in the period of the Second Polish Republic, developed during World War II, after 1945 (in the country and abroad) and continuing from the 1980s and1990s to the present. Significant interpretative perspectives include, among others, the trends in literary schools, the legends and myths of the Polish Eastern Borderland, the notion of the borderline of cultures, small homelands, and methodological phrases and breakthroughs (spatial turn, geopoetics, postcolonial criticism).

Opis:
The borderlands, peripheries, little motherlands – it is on such concepts that the discourse on multiculturalism – one of the most powerful discourses in Polish literature of the last two decades, is being built. Its inner dynamic shows the tension between opening oneself up to the Other One, and the impossibility of crossing the borderline that separates us from him. As a result of it, multiculturalism becomes transformed into yet another community myth of the Poles – this time, a myth serving to become adjusted to the European cultural standards. A positive intention, visible in sympathetic narrations about the Other One, is confronted with helplessness caused by one’s own limitations. The cultural project becomes confronted with Reality. Our multiculturalism remains a Polish perspective which attempts but vainly to rid itself of its own limitations. Yet in the Polish literature of recent years, one can fi nd authors who go one step further (Stasiuk, Tkaczyszyn-Dycki) and who try to listen to the voice of the genuine Other One, who is to be found outside the borders of the all-appropriating myth of Polish multiculturalism.

Opis:
On the basis of an empirical study, this article offers some generalisations concerning service systems characteristic of split towns in East-Central Europe. Three frontier urban complexes were examined, including two in the Polish-German borderland, viz. Słubice (Poland) – Frankfurt on the Oder (Germany) and Gubin (Poland) – Guben (Germany), and one in the Polish-Czech borderland, viz. Cieszyn (Poland) – Český Těšín (Czech Republic). The model approach adopted was intended to ensure an insight into the basic properties of the service system in the form of significant factors and connections holding within it. There are many factors giving shape to a service system, but those primarily responsible for differences between the service systems of the examined frontier urban complexes include: (a) the kinds of services offered, (b) specific forms of retail trade, (c) intensity of transborder traffic, and (d) consumers of services. Their unique combination allowed for distinguishing two service systems: in the Polish-German borderland and in the Polish-Czech one. The research also revealed that each system had a double service practice. One, geared to the service of the local population, is fairly stable, and the other – geared to a transborder customer – is different. In the Polish-Czech borderland it is balanced, equally open to the local customer and one from abroad, while in the Polish-German borderland it displays a marked asymmetry in terms of volume and function.
