    The Roskie Archive is the archival legacy of three aristocratic families: Sapieha coat of arms (COA) Lis, Branicki COA Gryf and Potocki COA Pilawa. The vast fortune, whose headquarters was at Ros village, located in the former county Vowkavysk (today western Belarus), was formed in the late of 18th century as a result of marriage Krystyna Branicki COA Griffin, Ros village heiress, with Franciszek Sapieha, owner of Bociek village in Podlaskie as well as Trościanica and Turow villages in Brest region. Their daughter, Teresa, married to Joachim Potocki was the heir. Her descendants have inherited a large part of the estate — including Tykocin — after the childless death of Castellan of Cracow and Grand Crown Hetman Jan Klemens Branicki. The Roskie Archives includes also records of previous owners of the estate: the Families of Słuszek, Chodkiewicz and Hlebowicz. Actually it does not include the last period, when Ros village — already in the 20th century — as a result of family bequest fell into the hands of Branicki Familly from Wilanów COA Korczak. The Roskie Archives is divided into four sections: I. Personal and family records and records of the property and business (16–20 c.), II. Records of a public nature (17–19 c.), III. Militaria (16–18 c.) and IV. Correspondence (18–19 c.). Elaboration of the Roskie Archive was the last work of an outstanding archivist and historian Prof. Teresa Zielińska (1929–2010).

    Artykuł podkreśla znaczenie materiałów źródłowych z Archiwum Głównego Akt Dawnych w Warszawie do badań nad dziejami społeczności żydowskiej Mazowsza Północnego w 1. połowie XIX w. W latach 1815–1837 region ten znajdował się w administracyjnych granicach województwa płockiego, a później guberni płockiej. Autor nawiązuje do roli ludności żydowskiej w życiu gospodarczym miast województwa płockiego i guberni płockiej, a zwłaszcza w rozwoju handlu na obszarze mazowieckiego regionu. Symptomem polityki restrykcyjnej władz Królestwa Kongresowego wobec ludności wyznania mojżeszowego było tworzenie, w niektórych miastach, żydowskich rewirów. Najwięcej informacji na ten temat zawiera zespół Komisja Rządowa Spraw Wewnętrznych i Policji. Podstawowe znaczenie dla odtworzenia funkcjonowania gmin żydowskich i życia religijnego ludności wyznania mojżeszowego z województwa płockiego i guberni płockiej są akta zespołu Centralne Władze Wyznaniowe. Niewiele jest natomiast źródeł do stanowiska ludności żydowskiej wobec polskich zrywów narodowowyzwoleńczych XIX w. Dla okresu wojny polsko-rosyjskiej 1831 r. są one w aktach zespołu Władze Centralne Powstania Listopadowego. Próbę określenia udziału Żydów z guberni płockiej w powstaniu styczniowym umożliwia kwerenda przeprowadzona w aktach zespołów Tymczasowa Komisja Wojenno-Śledcza i Zarząd Generał-Policmajstra w Królestwie Polskim. Zasób Archiwum Głównego Akt Dawnych w Warszawie to podstawowy materiał źródłowy do badań nad dziejami społeczności żydowskiej na ziemiach Mazowsza Północnego w latach 1815–1866 znajdujących się w granicach administracyjnych województwa płockiego i guberni płockiej.
    The article emphasizes the importance of source materials for research into the history of the Jewish community of Northern Mazovia in the first half of the 19th century, preserved at the Central Archives of Historical Records. In 1815–1837 period, Northern Mazovia fell within the administrative borders of the Płock voivodship, and later the Płock governorate. The author comments on the role of the Jewish population in the economic life of towns in the Płock voivodship and Płock governorate, especially with regard to fostering commerce in the Mazovia region. One symptom of the restrictive policy of Congress Poland’s authorities towards Jews was the establishment of Jewish districts in some cities. The Government Commission for Internal Affairs and the Police collection provides most information on this subject. The records of the Central Religious Authorities collection are fundamental for reconstructing the life of Jewish communities and religious life of Jews in the Płock voivodship and Płock governorate. Sources are scarce, however, as regards the stance of the Jewish population regarding Polish national uprisings of the 19th century. Some, concerning the period of the Polish-Russian War of 1831, can be found in the files of the Central Authorities of the November Uprising collection. An attempt to determine the participation of Jews from the Płock governorate in the January Uprising is possible thanks to the queries carried out within the files of the Temporary War and Investigation Commission and the General-Chief of Police Board in the Kingdom of Poland collections. The holdings of the Central Archives of Historical Records are the basic source material for research on the history of the Jewish community in Northern Mazovia in the years 1815–1866 within the administrative borders of the Płock voivodship and the Płock governorate.

    Autor artykułu, przygotowując się do realizacji filmu pt. Wielkie Galicjanki, poświęconego kobietom urodzonym na przełomie XIX i XX w. w Galicji i mającym związki z Wiedniem, natknął się, w różnych archiwach w Austrii, na Ukrainie i w Polsce, na szereg dokumentów oraz informacji dotyczących życiorysu wybitnej, urodzonej we Lwowie muzykolożki polskiej, Zofii Lissy. Mowa tu o faktach związanych przede wszystkim z okresem jej dzieciństwa oraz młodości. Szereg opisanych w artykule nieznanych wcześniej bądź też niepublikowanych dotąd dokumentów pozwoliło przedstawić nowe bądź skorygować dotychczas funkcjonujące dane na temat Zofii oraz jej najbliższej rodziny – rodziców, siostry, dziadków i krewnych ze strony matki, a także informacji związanych z okresem poprzedzającym jej przyjście na świat. Przede wszystkim wyniki kwerend przeprowadzonych przez autora pozwoliły na podanie, błędnie dotąd podawanej, prawdziwej daty urodzin Zofii Lissy.
    During my work on the film Wielkie Galicjanki (‘Great Galician women’), devoted to women born in the historical territory of Galicia (Halychyna) at the turn of the twentieth century and associated with the city of Vienna, I came across documents and information concerning the life of the eminent Lviv-born Polish musicologist Zofia Lissa, held in Austrian, Ukrainian and Polish archives. These sources mostly concern her childhood and youth. The numerous previously unknown or unpublished documents described in this article have made it possible to reveal or revise information relating to Zofia, as well as her parents, sister, grandparents and relatives on her mother’s side, and also to the period preceding her birth. Most importantly, my archive research has made it possible to correct the hitherto inaccurately given date of Zofia Lissa’s birth.

    This article examines the history of forest cartography in Poland. It describes the results of two years of research carried out by the author at the Central Archives of Historical Records in Warsaw. The aim of the work was to recognise the forest maps stored in the archives and to give their general description. An original procedure was developed for this purpose. Investigations were limited to the Cartographic Collection, which contains more than 15,000 maps, and the collection of Cartography Department Acquisitions consisting of more than 500 maps. Based on the inventory records and catalogue cards, 1356 items which might be forest maps were selected, and underwent detailed visual analysis. The majority of them (75%) were documented photographically. At the initial stage, 150 maps were rejected because of the formal reasons. The rest included 463 foreign−language maps: 207 in German (mainly from the 1796−1806 period); 242 in Russian (particularly from years 1868−1914; fig. 1), of which 180 showed areas in present−day Belarus; 13 in Latin (mostly from the 1795−1804 period); and one in French (dated 1810). The collection of Polish forest maps consisted of 743 items. The largest group (549 maps) depicted areas of the so−called Polish Kingdom, which existed in the years 1815−1914 (fig. 2). These maps were divided into eight main types. The number of produced maps decreased significantly after the January Uprising. The remaining 194 Polish forest maps cover areas in different regions, date from different periods or are undated. The proposed method enabled the effective attainment of the set objectives, and may be applied to work carried out at other state archives. The number of forest maps held at the Central Archives of Historical Records in Warsaw was found to be greater than the initial estimates. The collected documentation will enable the preparation of more detailed studies, devoted to: Polish forest maps for the area of the Polish Kingdom from the period of 1815−1914, German ones from years 1796−1806 and Russian ones from the period of 1865−1914. Analysis of the other designated groups will be possible once the collections would have been supplemented with items from other archives.

    Evangelical-Augsburg Community in Warsaw had two libraries during its existence: church library and synod library. Works on classification of the archival materials of the church were launched after the end of World War I and this caused that the books in the collection were also given attention. The church library was very poor. More books were owned by synod’s library which was organized earlier. The collection remained under the control of the notary of the Church College, who also was in charge of the church archive. In the first of the libraries, i.e. church library, books were divided into four separate sections, marked by the letters of the alphabet. These sections were divided into groups with sequential numbers: I-XVI. The Synod library books were arranged according to the subject matter in 30 sections. A library preserved in AGAD is only a small percentage of the former large collection of two libraries. Currently, under the name "Library" are preserved 153 items: books (including old prints), brochures, advertising prints and magazines. The most valuable item from the collection of the Synod library is so called The Radziwiłł Bible, translation of the Bible made by the Calvinist environment, completed in 1563. Among items from the former library special attention deserves Cantionale by Fr. Kraiński [Kancjonał Fr. Kraińskiego], second edition from 1604. In both libraries were relatively numerous copies of the journals related to and funded by the Evangelical Environmental: Forerunner of the Gospel and Evangelical Voice.

    Adam Wolff (1899–1984) was an eminent archivist, expert on the history of Mazovia and Warsaw city, the editor of the late medieval written sources. From 1924 to 1954 he worked at the Central Archives of Historical Records. The archival works of Wolff were closely connected with his ongoing scientific research that focused on the preparation of a list of officials of the Duchy of Mazovia and the study on the Mazovian Register. Before World War II he also developed a register of parchment documents of The Krasiński Library and published Mazowieckie zapiski herbowe z XV i XVI w. [The Mazovian Heraldic Notes from 15th–16th c.] Particularly noteworthy is his work (published in 1929) devoted to the Mazovian Register. After World War II, Wolff worked at The Central Archives of Historical Records as a Head of the Department of the Old Polish Records, and in 1949 he was appointed Professor at the Warsaw University. During his 30–year–old career in The Central Archives of Historical Records he took part in the preparation of guidelines on the elaboration of documents in the Polish archives and dictionary entries to the Polish Archival Dictionary. At that time he also worked on the edition of Księga radziecka miasta Starej Warszawy z lat 1447–1527 [A Register of the Court of the City Council of the Old Warsaw City 1447-1527], and prepared Projekt instrukcji wydawniczej dla pisanych źródeł historycznych do połowy XVI w. [Project of a publishing instruction for written historical sources created up to the mid–16th century]. 1950 together with Prof. K. Kuraszkiewicz he published valuable notes and the Polish troops oaths of loyalty of 15th and 16th c. from the books of the land court in Warsaw city. In addition to the scientific and archival work, Wolff conducted classes at the Historical Institute of the Warsaw University. In 1954 he moved to work at the Institute of History of Material Culture, Polish Academy of Sciences, and became Head of the Editing Department.

    More than half of historians who used the holdings of the Central Archives of Historical Records, headed in the years 1897–1919 by Professor Teodor Wierzbowski, came from Galicia. Among them archivists constituted not a small group, only to mention Oswald Balzer, Eugeniusz Barwiński, Adam Chmiel, Przemysław Dąbkowski, Stanisław Krzyżanowski, Stanisław Kutrzeba. Their correspondence, which is stored in the manuscript collections of the Scientific Library of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences and of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Cracow city, shows how much they valued the relations with the Central Archives and its director. Books on history and the fundamental source editions, as well as historical and legal arguments in the Polish–Hungarian border dispute about the region of Morskie Oko in the Tatra Mountains were the results of research conducted in Warsaw. Wierzbowski asked scholars, who used the holdings of The Central Archives of Historical Records, not to disclose the origin of quoted records, in order not to attract attention of Russian authorities to the fact how important and valuable to the Polish historical science was holdings of that archive. Contacts of Galician scholars, including archivists from the cities of Cracow and Lvov, maintained with the Central Archives show a sense of unity of the Polish science across the borders, in spite of partitions. These contacts contributed to the integration of Polish historians, and in independent Poland were basis for creation one common archival service.

    This paper first describes the functioning of first instance local courts of justice (called district courts) in medieval Poland, and against this background presents records of the District Court in Szadek. The historical documents, produced in the period between 1417 (first records) and 1768, constitute a separate archival file, which contains 106 volumes, between several hundred and over a thousand pages each. Ten of the preserved volumes are from the medieval times (1417-1510). The entries in the old books cover various matters: court Writs, information about court verdicts and sentences, lists of witnesses, records of credit and real estate transactions, obligations to settle payments etc. These archives are considered to be the main source for studies on landed gentry, but their vast potential has not yet been fully appreciated or exploited by researchers.
