The purpose of this article was to analyze the use of the records of the Central Archives of Historical Records and Archives of Historical Records in the study of 19th–century history. Items of interests were the works of historians dealing with this period: Maria and Tadeusz Manteuffel, Helena Więckowska, Ryszard Przelaskowski. From 1918 to 1939 the most popular records were items of the central administration, both of the Duchy of Warsaw and of the Polish Kingdom, fonds arising from the activities of the police and judicial institutions containing the records of martyrdom and persecution of the Polish nation. In the archives was looked for answers on how it was possible to survive period of captivity, what the source of life force of the Polish nation was. These archives, which traditions inherited contemporary The Central Archives of Historical Records, played a role of both resources’ storage that is an important part of the historian’s research and a treasure of the memory, a collection of records still alive, that evoke emotion, memories, which are pieces of biography of the insurgents’ generation of 1863/1864. The use of archival materials to research on 19th–century was dependent on several factors. Adopted research programs were one of them. Mainly those assuming that archives were an essential part of historical research. Also publishing policy of the Warsaw Scientific Society preferred works based on previously unknown source material, thus, it favored the use of archival records. This also contributed to the creation of studies in the historical sources to the history of the 19th century. Progressing elaboration of records and popularization of the holdings, to which also contributed research on the history of creators and the content of archival fonds, were the second factor influencing the use of the holdings of The Central Archives of Historical Records and The Archives of Historical Records in historical research. Therefore, the holdings of these archives had the important social functions through the joint efforts of archivists and historians.

Opis:
Adam Wolff (1899–1984) was an eminent archivist, expert on the history of Mazovia and Warsaw city, the editor of the late medieval written sources. From 1924 to 1954 he worked at the Central Archives of Historical Records. The archival works of Wolff were closely connected with his ongoing scientific research that focused on the preparation of a list of officials of the Duchy of Mazovia and the study on the Mazovian Register. Before World War II he also developed a register of parchment documents of The Krasiński Library and published Mazowieckie zapiski herbowe z XV i XVI w. [The Mazovian Heraldic Notes from 15th–16th c.] Particularly noteworthy is his work (published in 1929) devoted to the Mazovian Register. After World War II, Wolff worked at The Central Archives of Historical Records as a Head of the Department of the Old Polish Records, and in 1949 he was appointed Professor at the Warsaw University. During his 30–year–old career in The Central Archives of Historical Records he took part in the preparation of guidelines on the elaboration of documents in the Polish archives and dictionary entries to the Polish Archival Dictionary. At that time he also worked on the edition of Księga radziecka miasta Starej Warszawy z lat 1447–1527 [A Register of the Court of the City Council of the Old Warsaw City 1447-1527], and prepared Projekt instrukcji wydawniczej dla pisanych źródeł historycznych do połowy XVI w. [Project of a publishing instruction for written historical sources created up to the mid–16th century]. 1950 together with Prof. K. Kuraszkiewicz he published valuable notes and the Polish troops oaths of loyalty of 15th and 16th c. from the books of the land court in Warsaw city. In addition to the scientific and archival work, Wolff conducted classes at the Historical Institute of the Warsaw University. In 1954 he moved to work at the Institute of History of Material Culture, Polish Academy of Sciences, and became Head of the Editing Department.

The Roskie Archive is the archival legacy of three aristocratic families: Sapieha coat of arms (COA) Lis, Branicki COA Gryf and Potocki COA Pilawa. The vast fortune, whose headquarters was at Ros village, located in the former county Vowkavysk (today western Belarus), was formed in the late of 18th century as a result of marriage Krystyna Branicki COA Griffin, Ros village heiress, with Franciszek Sapieha, owner of Bociek village in Podlaskie as well as Trościanica and Turow villages in Brest region. Their daughter, Teresa, married to Joachim Potocki was the heir. Her descendants have inherited a large part of the estate — including Tykocin — after the childless death of Castellan of Cracow and Grand Crown Hetman Jan Klemens Branicki. The Roskie Archives includes also records of previous owners of the estate: the Families of Słuszek, Chodkiewicz and Hlebowicz. Actually it does not include the last period, when Ros village — already in the 20th century — as a result of family bequest fell into the hands of Branicki Familly from Wilanów COA Korczak. The Roskie Archives is divided into four sections: I. Personal and family records and records of the property and business (16–20 c.), II. Records of a public nature (17–19 c.), III. Militaria (16–18 c.) and IV. Correspondence (18–19 c.). Elaboration of the Roskie Archive was the last work of an outstanding archivist and historian Prof. Teresa Zielińska (1929–2010).

In the holdings of AGAD are gathered and made available microfilms and photocopies of Polonica which originals are in foreign institutions. A database containing information about the content of this collection is available on the archives’ website. Data on over 4,750 documents of Polish provenance are gathered. Polonica’s originals that are available on microfilm and in photocopies are preserved in the collection of 107 institutions from 23 countries in Europe, Asia and North America, including archives and libraries of all the Baltic Sea countries, with the exception of Estonia. 2009 AGAD took up an initiative to systematize information about Polonica that are preserved in the collections of countries around the Baltic Sea, especially in the collections of the Swedish archives. It is a well-known fact that important part of the Polish archives were robbed and deported to Sweden during the Polish-Swedish wars. Only some of the archival materials were restored. Thanks to the openness of Swedish institutions it is possible to copy Polonica, and in this way to fill in the gaps in the holdings of Polish archives. Descriptions of archival digital copies of Polonica from archives, libraries and museums of the Baltic States will be collected in frame of a project implemented by AGAD The Electronic Repository of Polonica in the collections of the Baltic states. Its repository is available at the AGAD’s website. Currently the database contains information on Polonica and scans of documents from Riksarkivet in Stockholm and the Latvian State Historical Archives in Riga.

The continuous increase of the number of source material in the following centuries of the Polish Middle Ages is expressed by a major qualitative change in the 14th century, that created for genealogical research previously unattainable possibilities. New types of sources were created then. Among them, the most important role played books and registers of courts and institutions i.e., local tribunals for nobles (Acta terrestria et castrensia), bench court (Schoppenstuhl; municipal court), municipal council, consistory (diocesan court) and, finally, chapters. This article deals with books of the courts for nobility (terrestria et castrensia). This kind of records allow researchers to capture the entire course of life of people mentioned in them, due to their continuous appearance before the courts in both litigation and non–litigious procedures. Items from the Central Archives of Historical Records include medieval books from the historical Mazovia, Kujawy and lands of Łęczyca (lat. Terra Lanciciensis), Sieradz (lat. Terra Siradiensis) and Wielun (lat. Terra Wyelunensis). Due to the war damages, especially World War II no such accounts are to be found for the certain lands, i.e. Sandomierz (lat. Terra Sandomiriensis), Dobrzyn (lat. Terra Dobrinensis), Podlasie, and some other districts. This lack might be compensated to some extent by relevant information from the books of the neighboring lands. The oldest court records preserved at The Central Archives of Historical Records are registers of local tribunals for nobles of Łęczyca region with entries from 1385. The oldest registers of local tribunals for nobles of Sieradz land and Kujawy region include entries from the late 14th century too. The main obstacles in the use of court records from The Central Archives of Historical Records are wrong binding and cards in non–sequential order. These are results of some old, unsuccessful attempts to arrange these records. Thus, there is a chance of committing numerous primarily chronological errors. Therefore, actual sequential arrangement of cards in the extant books is a research necessity. Relevant publications are a way for preparing future print edition of the courts’ records. Author presents his personal experience from arranging the oldest records from Kujawy region and Łęczyca land. The article ends with an example of the use of records from neighboring lands to determine the lineage of the Słoński Family, coat of arms Doliwa. Their main residential property was located in Dobrzyn land (Sadłowo).

More than half of historians who used the holdings of the Central Archives of Historical Records, headed in the years 1897–1919 by Professor Teodor Wierzbowski, came from Galicia. Among them archivists constituted not a small group, only to mention Oswald Balzer, Eugeniusz Barwiński, Adam Chmiel, Przemysław Dąbkowski, Stanisław Krzyżanowski, Stanisław Kutrzeba. Their correspondence, which is stored in the manuscript collections of the Scientific Library of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences and of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Cracow city, shows how much they valued the relations with the Central Archives and its director. Books on history and the fundamental source editions, as well as historical and legal arguments in the Polish–Hungarian border dispute about the region of Morskie Oko in the Tatra Mountains were the results of research conducted in Warsaw. Wierzbowski asked scholars, who used the holdings of The Central Archives of Historical Records, not to disclose the origin of quoted records, in order not to attract attention of Russian authorities to the fact how important and valuable to the Polish historical science was holdings of that archive. Contacts of Galician scholars, including archivists from the cities of Cracow and Lvov, maintained with the Central Archives show a sense of unity of the Polish science across the borders, in spite of partitions. These contacts contributed to the integration of Polish historians, and in independent Poland were basis for creation one common archival service.

The Oliva Treaty of 1660, which ended the Second Northern War, does not evoke such emotions as other historical events of Polish history, for example, the 600th anniversary of the victory of Grunwald (Tannenberg) celebrated this year. One of the reasons of this situation is probably a fairly abstract way in which the treaty was conducted during an international congress and a similar, but substantially different form from The Treaty of Westphalia, although it was its 'continuation' after 12 years. In this situation, although the official name of the Oliva Treaty is the Polish-Swedish treaty, one should not be surprised that a copy of this treaty is stored in the Archives du Ministère des Affaires ètrangères (Paris) under the name: Traités Multilatèraux. It is worth to stress that this treaty covers a very wide territory, many sites (9) and the guarantors (5). The publishers of a website dedicated to European treaties - Institut für Europäische Geschichte Mainz (IEG): Europäische Friedensverträge der Vormoderne – found as many as 18 copies of this treaty in various European archives. More copies of The Oliva Treaty than enumerated above existed and still exist. Basic text Instrumentum pacis of May 3rd 1660, agreed by the commissioners, written in Latin (with errors) was prepared in five copies for Poland, Sweden, Brandenburg and The Holy Roman Empire. To this have to be added one copy for France, the lists of errors (of August 1660), the ratifications by the rulers (in Poland also by the Diet [Sejm]), and guarantors’ documents. Documents that have not been covered yet by the above mentioned project, i.e., papers of the Elector of Brandenburg commissioners, the Swedish ratification, accession to the Treaty by Leopold are stored at The Central Archives of Historical Records in Warsaw.

W zasobie AGAD znajduje się jedyna zachowana w polskich archiwach państwowych księga metrykalna obrządku ormiańskiego. Pochodzi ona z parafii Złoczów (obecnie w granicach Ukrainy). Ormianie pojawili się w znacznej liczbie na ziemiach polskich już pod koniec XIII w., jednak dopiero unia zawarta z Rzymem w XVII w. spowodowała, że na wschodnich kresach Rzeczypospolitej powstało szereg parafii ormiańskich podporządkowanych metropolii lwowskiej tego obrządku, m.in.: w Brodach, Brzeżanach, Buczaczu, Jarosławiu, Stanisławowie, Podhajcach i właśnie w Złoczowie. Parafia ormiańska funkcjonowała tam, obok parafii rzymsko- i greckokatolickiej oraz gminy mojżeszowej, przez ponad sto lat (1676-1787). Omawiana księga przybyła do AGAD wraz z księgami metrykalnymi wyznania rzymskokatolickiego z archidiecezji lwowskiej, przechowywanymi do 1992 r. w Archiwum Państwowym w Przemyślu. Obejmuje ona wpisy chrztów (1685-1787), ślubów (1693-1784) i zgonów/pogrzebów (1694-1784). Wpisy metrykalne nie odbiegają formą i treścią od analogicznych, spotykanych w księgach metrykalnych wyznania rzymskokatolickiego z tego okresu. Wpisy nie są ujęte w rubryki i sporządzone zostały w formie opisowej. Księga ta została założona wkrótce po ustanowieniu parafii ormiańskiej w Złoczowie. Zawiera zapisy dotyczące ochrzczonych, zaślubionych i zmarłych/pogrzebanych w parafii w całym okresie jej istnienia, dlatego stanowi nieocenione źródło do dziejów parafii ormiańskiej w Złoczowie na tle historycznym. Parafia w Złoczowie wymarła lub została skasowana w latach 80. XVIII w.; taka datacja odpowiada datom zamknięcia serii wpisów w zachowanej księdze. Wraz ze Złoczowem upadły parafie: Jazłowiec i Zamość. Obecnie omawiana księga wchodzi w skład niewielkiego (12 j. a.) zbioru, któremu nadano nazwę „Księgi metrykalne i akta parafii i gmin różnych wyznań i obrządków z terenów tzw. zabużańskich”. Ze względu na zły stan zachowania księgi nie udostępnia się.
The only one preserved in the Polish state archives Armenian birth, marriage, and death register of the Armenian rite is preserved within the holdings of the Central Archive of Historical Records (AGAD). It comes from the parish Zolochiv (Золочів, Polish: Złoczów; now within the Ukrainian borders). Armenians arrived in large numbers on Polish territory at the end of the thirteenth century, but only the union with Rome resulted in creation of Armenian parishes subordinated to the metropolis of Armenian rite in Lviv within the eastern borderlands of Poland in the seventeenth century (parishes in: Brody [Броди, Polish: Brody, now in the Ukraine] , Berezhany (Бережани, Polish: Brzeżany, now in the Ukraine), Buchach (Бучач, Polish: Buczacz, now in the Ukraine), Jarosław (now in Poland), Stanislaviv (since 1962: Ивано-Франковск, Polish: Stanisławów, now in the Ukraine), Pidhaytsi (Підгайці, Polish: Podhajce, now in the Ukraine) and Zolochiv (Золочів, Polish: Złoczów; now in the Ukraine). The Armenian parish operated there next to the parishes of the Roman and Greek Catholic Churches and the Jewish community for over a hundred years (1676–1787). The book that is described came to AGAD along with metrical books of the Roman Catholics from the Archdiocese of Lviv, and had been stored until 1992 in the State Archive in Przemyśl. It includes the entries of baptism (1685–1787), marriages (1693–1784) and deaths / burials (1694–1784). These entries do not differ in the form and content from similar entries found in the metrical books of Roman Catholics in this period. The entries are not included in a table because the book was drawn up in narrative form. This book was founded shortly after the establishment of the Armenian parish in Zolochiv. It contains entries on those who were baptized, married and buried in the parish during the whole period of its existence; therefore, it is an invaluable source for the history of the Armenian parish in Zolochiv. The parish in Zolochiv became extinct or was liquidated in 1780s. This period of time corresponds to closing dates of series of entries in the preserved book. The parishes Yazlovets (Язловець, Polish: Jazłowiec, now in the Ukraine) and Zamość were liquidated along with Zolochiv. Currently the book is part of a small fond (12 archival units) that was given the name “Parish records and civil registers of the parishes and municipalities of different denomination and rites located on the so-called Bug River territory” [„Księgi metrykalne i akta parafii i gmin różnych wyznań i obrządków z terenów tzw. zabużańskich”]. The books are not available for researchers due to the poor condition.
