Opis:
Aquaculture is the rational rearing of fish and other aquatic organism in man-made ponds, reservoir and cages. It is also referred to as fish farming. Aquaculture is still being practiced at subsistence level in Nigeria. It is essentially a rural, secondary and part-time activity taking place in small farms in small freshwater ponds. Aquatic organisms produced through aquaculture include fish, aquatic invertebrates, planktons and aquatic plants (seaweeds). Aquaculture came as a solution to wild stock which are been depleted, to meet the protein need of the rural population and to overcome the problems inherent in wild fisheries. The application of aquaculture has unveiled to an extent the degree to which fish farming can sustain the economy and provide the necessary protein need of the country. The management of aquaculture for fish production starts from the setting up of the farm until the ponds begin to yield. The major management problem of fishery conservation is how to control both man and the aquatic crops for the present and the future when the demand will probably be greater than now. Aquaculture is very important and is the fastest growing animal based food producing sector particularly in developing countries.

Driven by the booming demands for healthy food, aquaculture industry has to deal with the problem of water pollution appropriately so as to achieve sustainable development. In this study, a combination of four stage CWs (three horizontal subsurface flows followed by one free water surface flow) was configured to treat low-strength aquaculture wastewater. For performance assessment, the wetlands were monitored over three years, during which artificial aeration was added to them. By the results, the organic matters and nutrients were mainly sequestered in the anterior subsurface flows, while the surface flow mainly contributed to DO improvement. These results probably implied no necessity of excessive subsurface flows connected in a staged manner. In addition, the artificial aeration improved the treatment performance on ammonium-N, TN and TP in the first-stage CW.

Opis:
Aquaculture plays a great role in producing foodstuffs, sustaining inland capture fisheries and providing employment. The key to future development in pond aquaculture is diversification of production technology, intensity, and function connected to increasing the environmental value of pond areas. New production systems involve a combination of intensive and extensive pond culture, increasing productivity and improving nutrient utilisation and fish species diversification. The most important principle of these systems is the possibility to use the wastes from intensive aquaculture as the input for extensive, environment-friendly fish production. These systems were proven to be profitable and sustainable in tropical and subtropical areas. However, for temperate climatic conditions, such data are scarce. For this reason, we decided to discuss modifications that, in our opinion, can be applied in an extensive part of the integrated intensive-extensive system in temperate climatic conditions in order to increase the overall productivity of the pond aquaculture.

Due to the high nutrient and organic matter contents of fish pond water, the water must be treated before disposal to prevent the eutrophication and deterioration of natural receiving waters. Floating wetlands (FTWs) and biofilters are environmentally friendly ecological treatments that can be used for this water. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the performance of FTWs with biofilters (FTW/Bs) for nutrient and organic compound removal. Two FTW/ Bs were applied in a pond with 5,000 Nile tilapia. The macrophyte species in the FTWs were Cyperus (Cyperus spp.) and Heliconia (Heliconia spp.). The buoyant mats of the FTWs were made from bamboo, and 200 bioballs were loaded below the mats. The water quality parameters in the pond were monitored for 5 weeks between the control test without the FTW/Bs and the experimental test with FTW/Bs at sites 1 (S1) to 8 (S8). The FTW/Bs were located at sites 2 (S2) and 3 (S3). The results showed reductions in all water quality parameters except orthophosphate (ortho-P) at S2 and S3. The COD, BOD, NH4-N, and SS at S2 and S3 parameters during the experimental test were significantly lower than those during the control test, in the ranges of 20.34–33.96, 25.47–29.41, 25.86–27.87, and 26.00–28.44%, respectively.

Aquaculture is an industry that has developed rapidly over the past decades. Despite several hazards in the operations, emergency preparedness is not at the same level as in the rest of the maritime industry. This paper highlights some possibilities to increase the aquaculture industry’s coastal emergency preparedness. This paper is the result of the innovation project “Coastal Emergency Preparedness” funded by the Norwegian Research Council and industry partners. The aquaculture industry must establish its own emergency preparedness. In this paper, the innovation of a fleet of emergency preparedness vessels along the coastline, which could fill the gaps in emergency preparedness, is presented. The vessels would be of varied sizes, with different equipment and response times, and could assist the aquaculture industry during local incidents or large‐scale ones, such as algae blooms or winter storms, that affect many sites at the same time. Each production zone would need its own dedicated fleet due to biosecurity regulations. The emergency preparedness vessel fleet would be led by an on‐scene commander. The fleet would deal with oil spills and tasks such as emergency towing, firefighting, rescue of people, recapturing of fish, silage making, algae detection, and diving missions. With such a vessel fleet, small and large aquaculture companies could increase their emergency preparedness with a common strategy and shared resources.

Crayfish are valuable invertebrates that are constantly in great demand in all corners of the Earth. Breeding crayfish is not only large-scale production as it can also be arranged in small volumes using pools and installations of closed water supply. Cultivation of crayfish generates profit after a certain period of time, if all biotechnological norms of cultivation are considered. Cultivation of crayfish is a rather promising production, in which it is possible to obtain from 200 to 300% of stable profits during 3–4 years old. The article gives an overview of the technology of growing crayfish, taking into account the characteristics of farming in Ukraine. The basic biotechnological stages of the establishment and operation of the economy are determined, calculations of capital expenditures for the establishment of the economy are presented and the profitability of the project for the production of freshwater crayfish is determined. Cultivation of river crayfish makes it possible to obtain environmentally friendly products that can compete on the markets of Ukraine or EU countries. Also, this way of growing crayfish allows getting stocking material for release in natural reservoirs in order to restore the populations of river crayfish.

The recent increase in fish production has resulted in the accumulation of fish pond sediment. This sediment accumulates over time and can lead to a reduction in the depth of ponds and in the living space available for fish, it may also lead to a depletion in dissolved oxygen. Therefore, the removal of sediment from fresh water ponds is crucial for pond maintenance, and thus economical fish production. Fish pond sediment is rich in nutrients and organic matter, and therefore it may have potential as a fertilizer in crop production, nursery pot culture, etc. However, it contains compounds that undergo rapid degradation producing unpleasant odours and posing a threat to the environment, therefore it needs to be managed and handled efficiently in an environmentally sound and sustainable manner. The overall goal of this study was to analyse the current state and management practices of fish pond sediment generated in the existing aquaculture systems, with special reference to organic aquaculture, and the potential for the recovery of nutrients through bioconversion processes to organic fertilizers.

White leg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) is known as a prime aquacultural commodity in Indonesia. However, the rapid growth of shrimp farming has resulted in widespread destruction of coastal ecosystems, including mangrove swamps. Intensification of shrimp culture has led to many other environmental problems. Integration of mangroves into aquaculture systems (IMAS) should be considered as a way to preserve the mangrove ecosystem as well as sustainability of the aquaculture business by treating the influent and effluent water. This study aimed to assess the benefits of integrating mangroves into shrimp aquaculture, in terms of water quality. The results showed that temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), and nitrite levels in the water significantly differed between sample sites. PCA analysis indicates that total organic matter (TOM), nitrates, nitrites, and ammonia were the principal factors in the overall water quality of the ponds. The highest pollution index was found in the super-intensive shrimp ponds ('moderately polluted'), while the other sites, including the mangrove area, were categorized as 'lightly polluted'. These findings suggest that the presence of mangroves may improve the quality of aquaculture wastewater, but the pollution index may still not reach the 'good' category. It is therefore recommended that a wastewater treatment plant be installed to support the integrated aquaculture system.

Whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) farming is a major activity in the coastal areas of many tropical countries. To meet the demand in this market, the culture system has expanded using intensive technology, which has resulted in the emission of effluents that threaten the surrounding aquatic ecosystem. Therefore, proper aquaculture management is needed to ensure both economic and ecological benefits. This led to the emergence of eco-green aquaculture. Water quality monitoring is a critical part of aquaculture management and when performed regularly, it yields a large and complex dataset. In this study, the authors aimed to analyse the dynamics of water quality characteristics and the relationships between these variables in whiteleg shrimp ponds in a tropical eco-green aquaculture system from 2020 to 2022. Since the data includes nine parameters and is quite complex, the principal component analysis (PCA) approach was used. This method enables to identify the factors that determine water quality, which will help ensure effective and efficient aquaculture management. Consequently, the water quality variables in the studied area were reduced to five dimensions and salinity, ammonia, and pH were found to be the key factors responsible for the changes in water quality characteristics. Hence, these variables should be the focus of farming management systems.

Opis:
The accumulation of elements in biocenoses of aquatic ecosystems depends primarily on the forms of elements in the environment. The bioaccumulation coefficient (BC) is a measure of the intensity of an elements uptake of trace by living organisms. Manganese is an essential element for both plant and animal organisms. However, its excess may cause a toxic effect, i.e. it disturbs the activity of synapses, thus leading to an impaired functioning of the central nervous system. This study focused on the accumulation of manganese in individual links of an aquatic ecosystem food chain under conditions of extensive carp farming. The BC values were computed and the pollution degree of the fish pond was estimated. The investigations were conducted in a fish pond situated in Mydlniki and fed with water from the Rudawa River. Water, bottom sediment, benthic organisms (Diptera Chironomidae larvae) and carps were sampled from the pond. Organs most strongly involved in the metal metabolism (gills, gonads, liver and muscles) were prepared from sampled carps. Manganese concentrations were determined in all samples using atomic emission spectroscopy after wet mineralization of samples in a closed system in a microwave mineralizer. The concentrations of manganese in the abiotic elements of pond ecosystems were low and should not pose any threat of its excessive accumulation in living organisms. However, the manganese concentrations in the benthic organisms and in the analyzed carp organs were high. Similarly, other authors found high manganese concentration in fish living in the environments polluted with this element. The value of manganese enrichment coefficient for the bottom sediments in relation to its water concentration was high. The biggest manganese content was assessed in gills, then in the liver and gonads, and the smallest one - in carp muscles. Manganese BCs in the gills of carps in relation to its content in water and bottom sediments were 176.6 and 0.08, respectively. The BC values in relation to the manganese concentration in water were much higher, but lower in comparison to its content in bottom sediments than reported elsewhere. This confirms that the BC for manganese in gills varies depending on the water pollution level.

Opis:
Diurnal changes in the structure of the ciliate community in surface waters were studied in the aquaculture area of Dapeng’ao cove, China. Two periods of heavy rainfall occurred during the study period, intensifying water column stratification and influencing the water’s properties. A total of 21 ciliate taxa from 15 genera were identified; the dominant species was Mesodinium rubrum. The maximum abundance of M. rubrum reached 3.92×104 indiv. dm−3, contributing 95.1% (mean value) to the total ciliate abundance. Diurnal changes in M. rubrum abundance were highly variable, the driving force probably being irradiance and food availability. The results suggest that M. rubrum may form blooms in aquaculture areas when there is a suitable physical regime with enriched nutrients, which is potentially harmful to the fish-farming industry.

Fish and seafood production has grown steadily in the past five decades. Total world fisheries and aquaculture production reached 167.2 million tonnes in 2014 [1]. Intensive fish production triggers growth in the amount of waste processing, which has serious environmental impacts. Utilization and energy recovery from fish waste have become areas of interest for the global economy. Specialized methods and techniques have been developed to acquire biomethane, biodiesel and biofertilizer from fish biomass. Also, using physical, biochemical and thermochemical processes, relevant substances (such as fish protein hydrolysate, natural pigments, chitosan and collagen) can be obtained.

Opis:
The results of using the waste water from recirculating aquaculture system for phytoand zooplankton cultivation are presented in the article. The physico-chemical parameters of the aquaculture system’s waste water and comparative culture media were recorded during hydrobionts cultivation. The indicators of productivity and the biochemical composition of investigated cultures were determined. The biochemical analysis of studied cultures included the investigations of the content of total proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, carotenoids and photosynthetic pigments. Using aquaculture system’s waste water as a medium for the cultivation of phyto- and zooplankton can significantly reduce the cost of technology for live feed biomass increase in the aquaculture industries.

Opis:
Trichodinids are probably the most commonly encountered protozoan parasites on fishes in marine and freshwater environments. They are typically found on the gills, skin and fins of fish. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and mean intensity of Trichodina sp. in freshwater fish from cyprinid aquaculture facilities in Macedonia. This study was carried out by seasons, in a period of three years. A total of 578 specimens of common carp (Cyprinus carpio, Linnaeus 1758), 76 specimens of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella, Valenciennes 1844), 47 specimens of silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, Valenciennes, 1844) and 53 specimens of bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis, Richardson, 1845) from the most significant and larger cyprinid aquaculture facilities in Macedonia, including fish farms and reservoirs, were examined for parasitological investigations. Infestation with Trichodina sp. was found in 206 specimens of common carp in all aquaculture facilities examined, in all seasons, as well as, in 9 specimens of grass carp from two fish farms, only in autumn season. Total, the prevalence with Trichodina sp. was 11.84% (grass carp) and 35.67% (common carp), while the, mean intensity was 7.56 (grass carp) and 4.56 (common carp). The prevalence with Trichodina sp. in common carp by season was as following: spring – 11.82%, summer – 3.44%, autumn – 7.85%, winter – 7.05%, while the mean intensity was: spring – 4.55; summer – 4.67; autumn – 4.40; winter – 4.72. Our findings of Trichodina sp. in grass carp in the present study is considered as the first record in Macedonia. Also, this fish species is regarded as new host for Trichodina sp. in Macedonian waters.
Łącznie przebadano pod kątem parazytologicznym 578 osobników karpia (Cyprinus carpio, Linnaeus 1758), 76 amurów białych (Ctenopharyngodon idella, Valenciennes 1844), 47 tołpyg białych (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, Valenciennes, 1844) i 53 tołpyg pstrych (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis, Richardson, 1845). Zakażenie Trichodina sp. stwierdzono u 206 osobników karpia we wszystkich badanych stawach i okresach, oraz w okresie jesiennym u 9 amurów białych z dwóch stawów hodow-lanych. Odpowiednio średnia intensywność zarażenia wynosiła wiosną – 4.55; latem – 4.67; jesienią – 4.40 I zimą – 4.72. Stwierdzenie Trichodina sp. pasożytującego na amurze białym jest pierwszym przypadkiem zaobserwowanym w Macedonii. W związku z tym gatunek ten jest nowym gospodarzem dla Trichodina sp. w wodach Macedonii.
