Opis:
The research, in 2004, was focused on the whole population of Anemone sylvestris (Snowdrop Windflower) present in the area of a kettle hole (0.8 km2) in north-eastern Poland (52°50’00’’N; 23°11’20’’E). The location of 56 clumps of generative specimens was surveyed. They numbered from several to approx. 1500 specimens. The number of generative specimens in this population exceeded 10 000. On account of this, it is a unique stand of A. sylvestris in Poland. The relationship between the occurrence of the Snowdrop Windflower and the presence of kame hills and ridges has been proven. Low slopes of kame with an inclination of 10-20o, and a north-eastern or eastern exposition has been found as the local ecological optimum for this species. Research carried out in 1970-2001 on 5 permanent plots (25 m2 each) has shown that: 1) Anemone sylvestris is an essential element of xerothermic grasslands of the order Festucetalia valesiacae; 2) the species suddenly withdraws from the parts of land on which woody species have already reached the shrub layer; 3) the greatest danger for the population of A. sylvestris in this area is the process of secondary succession initiated by the discontinuation of grazing on the kame hills.

Opis:
In Poland, like in other parts of Central Europe, dry grasslands significantly contribute to the biodiversity of both fauna and flora. Anthropogenic pressure impair many species of xerothermic habitats, and several populations face an increased risk of extinction. The goal of the study was to define factors that may affect the size of wild populations of Anemone sylvestris L., a protected species in Poland, with both a short- and long-term perspective, and to examine the influence of vegetation changes on the density, the abundance of flowering and male function (pollen production, pollen viability), as well as seed set. In situ observations were performed in 2005-2006 and 2011-2012 in three populations located on the Lublin Upland, SE Poland. The reduction in population density and A. sylvestris blooming was exacerbated by the expansion of the shrubs, but not by Brachypodium pinnatum. Male characteristics of A. sylvestris, i.e. pollen amount per multi-staminate flowers or pollen viability appeared to decrease under pressure of shrub competition. Populations with limitation of male function had impaired degree of seed set. Various consequences for the functioning of populations within a metapopulation system can be expected due to substantial qualitative and quantitative disorders in pollen traits. It is crucial that successful recovery programs for A. sylvestris primary should aim to conserve and manage the habitat.

Opis:
The research comprised the xerothermic grasslands communities on the southern slope of Góra Wał situated on the right bank of the Warta river in Mstów. A floristic list of all vascular plant species was made. In order to define the type of the phytocoenoses 3 phytosociological survey was made according to the Braun-Blanguet method, each covering an area of 25 m2, situated in the upper, middle and lower part of the slope. To determine the density of the Anemone sylvestris population the research area was segmented with a 1 × 1 m square grid, in which Anemone sylvestris specimens were counted and broken into flowering, fruiting and barren once. The average density of specimens per 1 m2 is 36. It was observed that overdevelopment of Brachypodium pinnatum L. limits the occurrence of Anemone sylvestris. Numerous Anemone sylvestris specimens were found beneath the tree canopy, were the Brachypodium pinnatum cover is lesser. The condition of the Anemone sylvestris population can be described as good. Its specimens flower and have fruit every year. In the recent years an increased share of Anthericum ramosum in the species composition has been observed. In order to maintain the Anemone sylvestris population and other species found in the grassy areas, preservative actions should be continued, consisting in removing tree and shrub sapling which enters the grass areas, and what is most important, in re-introducing sheep on an extensive scale, which will limit the overdevelopment of Brachypodium pinnatum. Xerothermic grasslands communities on Góra Wał in Mstów should be transformed into a nature reserve because it is a home for many regionally rare, precious and protected plant species.
