Opis:
Cast zinc alloys have similar properties to aluminium alloys. The differences are due to the lower melting point and higher density. Zinc has a density of 7.14 g/cm3, a melting point of 419.5°C and the boiling temperature of 906º C. In the temperature range from 150 to 200°C, zinc has good susceptibility to plastic deformation. It is also resistant to atmospheric factor influence, but is not resistant to acids. The main use of zinc alloy, is the production of thin-walled casts that require high precision. Zinc alloys are also used for die casting moulds, housings and covers as well as a variety of devices that are used in the precision industry, electrical engineering, automotive and construction industry. Properly performed chemical modification leads to improve of properties of the produced castings. Therefore it is very important to know how the cast structure with the change of the chemical composition by adding metallic modifiers to the liquid metal. In this work there was studied the effect of chemical modification of cast zinc alloy on the properties and microstructure of the alloys before and after modification. Modified alloys were prepared by adding modifiers in the range of 0.1% to 1% in form of Ti- Sr and B as aluminium master alloy and then cast into the metal moulds. Next the thermo-derivative analysis was performed of the modified Zn-Al-Cu alloy, the microstructure investigation was carried out using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy with EDS X-ray microanalysis usage as well as hardness was measured of the modified Zn-Al-C alloys.

Opis:
Al-4.5Cu alloys are widely used in aerospace industries due to their low weight and high mechanical properties. This group of aluminium alloys is known as 2xx series and exhibits the highest mechanical properties however this alloy is known to suffer from feedability and high tendency for hot tearing. Al-Si alloys (3xx) have improved fluidity and better feedability particularly by several modifications such as Ti, B or Sr. Eutectic temperature is decreased and mechanical properties can be enhanced. Yet, the strength values of this alloy group cannot reach the values of 2xx series. Therefore, in this study, the effect of Ag addition on the fluidity of Al-4.5Cu alloy has been investigated. Standard size spiral mould was used. The casting temperature was selected to be 770oC. Five castings were made and Weibull statistical approach was used to evaluate the results. In addition, coating of the die with BN was also investigated. It was found that Ag addition and BN coating of the die revealed the most reproducible, reliable and high fluidity values.

Opis:
The paper presents the cellular automaton (CA) model for tracking the development of dendritic structure in non-equilibrium solidification conditions of binary alloy. Thermal, diffusion and surface phenomena have been included in the mathematical description of solidification. The methodology for calculating growth velocity of the liquid-solid interface based on solute balance, considering the distribution of the alloy component in the neighborhood of moving interface has been proposed. The influence of solidification front curvature on the equilibrium temperature was determined by applying the Gibbs Thomson approach. Solute and heat transfer equations were solved using the finite difference method assuming periodic boundary conditions and Newton cooling boundary condition at the edges of the system. The solutal field in the calculation domain was obtained separately for solid and liquid phase. Numerical simulations were carried out for the Al-4 wt.% Cu alloy at two cooling rates 15 K/s and 50 K/s. Microstructure images generated on the basis of calculations were compared with actual structures of castings. It was found that the results of the calculations are agreement in qualitative terms with the results of experimental research. The developed model can reproduce many morphological features of the dendritic structure and in particular: generating dendritic front and primary arms, creating, extension and coarsening of secondary branches, interface inhibition, branch fusion, considering the coupled motion and growth interaction of crystals.

Decomposition of the supersaturated solid solution of 2 at.% Cu in Al was investigated by means of electrical resistivity and high-resolution positron lifetime measurements. The phase composition of this alloy was determined by transmission electron microscopy. Electrical resistivity measurements were performed by a classical four-point method. Positron lifetime spectra were measured by means of a spectrometer consisting of two BaF$\text{}_{2}$ detectors and a standard fast-slow coincidence system. The specimens were first exposed to the solution heat treatment at 783 K for 19 hours with a subsequent quenching. Then the specimens were isochronally annealed in the temperature range 293 ÷ 573 K. Annealing responses of electrical resistivity and positron annihilation were studied. Resistivity measurements as well as transmission electron microscopy observations confirmed the well-known decomposition sequence of the Al-Cu alloy. The decomposition of the alloy was manifested by the decrease in the intensity of positron lifetime component τ$\text{}_{2}$ = (207 ±2 ) ps correlated with simultaneous appearance and increase in the intensity of τ$\text{}_{3}$ = (180 ± 5) ps component. Component τ$\text{}_{2}$ originates from positron annihilation in vacancies trapped at the Guinier-Preston zones while τ$\text{}_{3}$ comes from annihilation of the positrons localized in the misfit dislocations at coherent precipitates of the Al$\text{}_{2}$Cu phase. The shortest observed component τ$\text{}_{1}$ apparently belongs to annihilation of untrapped positrons.

Opis:
This paper presents a study of the effect of the modification and coolingrate on the grain countα(Al) in the Al-5Cu alloy. Research was performed on castings with walls thickness between 3 mm and 25 mm. Cooling curves were recorded to determine the cooling rate and the degree of undercooling at the beginning of solidification. It has been shown that cooling rate increases exponentially as the wall thickness of casting decreases. Moreover it has been demonstrated that the cooling rate of castings changes within a wide range (21ºC/s - 1ºC/s) when the wall thickness changes from 3 up to 25 mm. Metallographic examinations revealed primary grains (primary α(Al) grains). The paper show that the relationship between the grain count and the degree of undercooling (for non-modified and modified alloys) can be represented by the equation N = Nv = np·exp(-b/_Tα), based on the Weibull's distribution of the size of nucleation sites.

Opis:
The present research was conducted on thin-walled castings with 5 mm wall thicknesses. This study addresses the effect of the influence of different master alloys, namely: (1) Al-5%Ti-1%B, (2) Al-5%Ti and (3) Al-3%B, respectively on the structure and the degree of undercooling (ΔTα = Tα-Tmin, where Tα - the equilibrium solidification temperature, Tmin - the minimum temperature at the beginning of α(Al) solidification) of an Al-Cu alloy. The process of fading has been investigated at different times spent on the refinement treatment ie. from 3, 20, 45 and 90 minutes respectively, from the dissolution of master alloys. A thermal analysis was performed (using a type-S thermocouple) to determine cooling curves. The degree of undercooling and recalescence were determined from cooling and solidification curves, whereas macrostructure characteristics were conducted based on a metallographic examination. The fading effect of the refinement of the primary structure is accompanied by a significant change in the number (dimension) of primary grains, which is strongly correlated to solidification parameters, determined by thermal analysis. In addition to that, the analysis of grain refinement stability has been shown with relation to different grain refinements and initial titanium concentration in Al-Cu base alloy. Finally, it has been shown that the refinement process of the primary structure is unstable and requires strict metallurgical control.

A series of Al-5Ti-1B master alloys were obtained via fluoride salt process by holding them between 780°C and 880°C for 10-90 min. The influence of holding temperature and time during preparation on the microstructure and its refining performance were investigated by X-ray diffractometer, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The results indicated both the morphology and the distribution of TiB22and Al3Ti were seriously affected by holding conditions. Inadequate TiB2 particles were generated when holding time was short. However, Fe-containing impurity particles that aggregated along the matrix grain boundaries were found after the prolonged holding time. The refining and microhardness test results revealed that Al-5Ti-1B, the one held at 820°C for 30 min showed the optimum refining efficiency on Al-Cu alloy.

Opis:
In order to identify the influence of different Mn, Cd, V and Zr content on the properties of Al-Cu casting alloys in hydraulic valves, orthogonal test methods were used to prepare alloy test bars with different elements and contents. Tensile tests were performed on the test bars so obtained. The microstructure of alloys with different compositions is studied. The results show that adding approximately 0.4% of Mn can not only form a strengthening phase but also reduce the excessive segregation of the matrix along the grain boundary. A Cd content of 0.2% can promote the formation of micro Cd spheres in the softer aluminum matrix. Hard spots increase the wear resistance of the material; however, an excess of Cd will cause element segregation and deteriorate the mechanical properties of the valve body. Zr and V refine the grains in the alloy; however, an excess of these elements will lead to a large area of segregation. If proper heat treatment is lacking, the mechanical properties of the valve body deteriorate.

The development of computerization caused a lot of progress in numerical modeling of alloys crystallization. It becomes possible to predict casting microstructure. For this purpose, it is necessary to know the equations describing the size distribution of the substrate to the heterogeneous nucleation of grains or grains density function dependence on supercooling. The paper presents calculations for Oldfield and exponential model of grain density as a function of the maximum supercooling. In addition, calculations were also performed for the log-normal distribution of the substrate size to heterogeneous nucleation of primary phase. The main aim of this work is to determine the fitting parameters of Al-Cu alloy solidifying based on experimental studies published in the literature [7] for above equations. In the case of log-normal size distribution of substrate for heterogeneous nucleation, the parameters present in the equation were determined using a numerical algorithm. Thanks to these schedules were then summarized in the graph of experimental data for comparison.

Próba została wykonana w temperaturze otoczenia na próbkach w kształcie walców o średnicy 6 mm i wysokości 9 mm, zastosowano siłę nacisku 100 kN. Do wykonania pomiarów twardości użyto mikrotwardościomierza Future-Tech FM-700.

In this study the Al-Cu aluminum alloy with 4 wt% Cu was prepared under controlled atmosphere and coated by microarc oxidation technique for the durations of 40, 80, and 120 min. The phase composition, surface roughness and hardness of the coating were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, profilometry. The outer region contains larger sized porosities while fine porosities were formed in the inner dense region of the coating. The longer coating duration resulted in dense inner region with finely distributed $\alpha-Al_2O_3$ precipitates. The presence of Cu in the outer region is not significant while the presence of Si in inner region was lower than in the outer region. Mullite and $\gamma-Al_2O_3$ phases were formed for 40 min and $\alpha-Al_2O_3$ phase was additionally formed for 80 min and 120 min coating time. Opis:
A conventional powder metallurgy method (PM) was used to produce Al-SiC and Al4Cu alloy matrix composites with 2.5, 5, 7.5 and 10 wt% of SiC particles. Two different sizes of the reinforcing phase particles were applied to determine their effect on composite microstructure. The sintering process was carried out at 600°C under nitrogen atmosphere, and its consequence was the appearance of aluminium nitrides in composite microstructure acting as an additional strengthening phase. The composites were next re-pressed and re-sintered (2p2s) under the same conditions. The main aim of this article was to examine the microstructure of the SiC reinforced Al and Al4Cu alloy matrix composites. To achieve this goal and characterize the sintered materials, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques were used.
