The purpose of the present research is to consider whether a syntactic approach proposed by Maurice Gross in "Syntaxe de l’adverbe" (1986) may prove helpful in analyzing Polish adverbs. The term of generalized adverb, proposed by M. Gross, is used for syntactically different structures (underived and derived adverbs, adverbials or adverbial subordinate clauses). In this paper we aim to present the basis for the delineation of morphological types of compound (frozen) adverbs in Polish which are classified according to their internal syntactic structure.

Opis:
The article deals with the contemporary meaning of the adverb mimochodem 'in passing/casually'. After a brief disciussion of semantic changes within this unit, the synchronic analysis is presented. Appropriate contextual analysis of the adverb mimochodem shows that it collocates only with some verbs of saying. Numerous semantic restrictions suggest that the lexical unit mimochodem places specific speech acts within more general speech events. In the conclusion of the article, the author proposes to capture the relevant semantic properties of the discussed adverb by means of appropriate semantic explication.

Artykuł poświęcony jest kategorialnemu statusowi przysłówków we współczesnym języku białoruskim. Przysłówek jest uważany za jednostkę pochodną, która łączy cechy rzeczowników i predykatów. Pokazano, że przysłówek nie należy do żadnej z tych klas. Przysłówki powstają z rzeczowników tracących znaczenia konkretne i wyabstrahowane. Ta część mowy jest bliższa predykatom, ponieważ może być głównym predykatem w wypowiedzi. Ponadto czasami przysłówek wyraża dodatkową predykatywę i w rezultacie komplikuje strukturę semantyczną zdania. Jednak główną jego funkcją jest modyfikator okolicznikowy, który nie jest predykatem.

The author proves that the etymology of the surname Przyboś came from the lexicalised adverb przyboś, na przyboś (walk), “to wear shoes on bare feet, with a bare foot, (walk) slightly barefoot”, that came from the adjective przybosy. The surname did not stem from either compound names such as Przybysław, Przybywój or from the verb przybyć, contrary to what has been stated in the historical and etymological dictionary Nazwiska Polaków by Kazimierz Rymut.

The article considers the relation of the Polish expressions connected with the notion of "accidentality" to the notion of action and agentivity in general. The expressions analyzed in the paper include przypadkiem, przypadkowo 'accidentally' or to przypadek, że_ 'it is an accident that_' (with special emphasis on the first one). Explications of the adverb przypadkiem in the two semantic papers referred to in the article - M. Grochowski (2009) and A. Bogusławski (2009) - emphasize such elements as "inexplicability", "unexpectedness" and, most importantly, "independence" of the events indicated by that predicate. Not denying such claims, I try to show that it is difficult to account for the semantics of przypadkiem without taking into consideration agentivity-related notions. First, this expression - as it is used in sentences - most often takes the role analogical to the one of "intentionality modifiers" (like niechcący 'unwillingly', nieświadomie 'unconsciously'); second - in some contexts przypadkiem operates on a metatextual level, indicating the very action of the speaker; and finally - there is reason to assume that it is exactly actions that enable "accidentality" ("independence") of events in the world in general. It means that actions would be at the center of all the accidentality-related predications, though they may not be explicitly mentioned in the sentence. The article is divided into three parts. The first provides characteristic features of the adverb przypadkiem as compared with other similar expressions (e.g. przez przypadek 'by accident'); with special emphasis put on where to find in the sentence content the "independent" events evoked by the notion of "accidentality". In the second part I demonstrate that "accidentality" predicated in the sentence points to some (hypothetical) actions undertaken by agents (not necessarily present in the sentence content). Since przypadkiem in the rhematic position and in the thematic position show different characteristics in certain interesting points, they are considered separately. And finally - in the third part I go beyons strictly linguistic considerations and try to answer the question why the adverb przypadkiem so evidently and so regularly evokes agentivity-related notions.

The category of epistemic adverbs has recently received increased attention in both Anglophone and Polish linguistics, but English–Polish contrastive research in this area has so far been rather fragmentary. English and Polish grammars differ considerably in the ways they classify epistemic adverbs. The differences largely result from the different understanding of adverbs as a category, which in English grammar tends to be presented as broad and heterogeneous while in Polish grammar – rather narrow and uniform. Polish equivalents of English epistemic adverbs are classified as particles – a distinct word class with its own characteristic properties. This paper presents an overview of approaches to epistemic adverbs taken in Anglophone and Polish linguistics with the aim of identifying their convergent points and suggesting a framework for a contrastive analysis. In the case of Anglophone research, the focus is largely on discourse studies because epistemic adverbs are usually seen as a discourse category. In Polish linguistics, however, they are analysed within different theoretical frameworks, which is why the discussion will not be limited to one specific methodological school. Reference is also made to more general issues, such as the treatment of adverbs as a category.

Zahlreiche in adverbialer Funktion verwendete polnische und deutsche Präpositionalphrasen lassen sich nicht frei bilden, sondern sind Resultat der Adverbialisierung bzw. sogar Idiomatisierung und entziehen sich somit oft einer strikte grammatischen Erklärung. Der Beitrag versucht solche Bildungen nach ihrer Form, Bedeutung und Funktion zu beschreiben.
The paper deals with Polish and German prepositional phrases used in adverbial function. Such phrases cannot be freely formed, but are the result of adverbialization or even idiomatization and therefore often elude a strict grammatical explanation. The aim of the article is to investigate the form, meaning and function of such phrases.

The analysis shows that while behind and beneath are still frequently used as adverbs in the whole Middle English period, between and betwixt are predominantly used as prepositions already in Early Middle English. This clearly demonstrates that the degree of grammaticalisation of the latter two Middle English words was much higher than that of behind and beneath.
