Opis:
The Adriatic Sea is an epicontinental, closed sea, part of the Mediterranean. It formed in the Late Miocene, and ended structurally during the Pliocene and Quaternary, when most of its sediments were deposited. The larger Pliocene and Quaternary depressions occur mostly by the western coast, where the deposits are several thousand metres thick, and were sourced from the Alps and the Apennines. The east coast is characterised by the large and elongated Dinarides Mts., that have continental drainage extremely close to the shoreline and a very small erosional rate. Consequently, eastern inflows were and are very short, including strongly tidal estuaries that erode only small volumes of mostly carbonate detritus, adjacent to frontal islands or mountains, with restricted depositional areas. The Neretva River deposits make up part of the largest contemporary delta system on the eastern Adriatic coast, and have been analysed in this study using three seismic sections and one exploration well. These deposits are recognized inside the Neretva and Korčula channels, assuming that processes operating during Quaternary glacial phases shifted the delta tens of kilometres to the west in the past on several occasions.

Opis:
Beach sands from the Rosa Marina locality (Adriatic coast, southern Italy) were analysed mainly microscopically in order to trace the source areas of their lithoclastic and bioclastic components. The main cropping out sedimentary units were also studied with the objective to identify the potential source areas of lithoclasts. This allowed to establish how the various rock units contribute to the formation of beach sands. The analysis of the bioclastic components allows to estimate the actual role of organisms regarding the supply of this material to the beach. Identification of taxa that are present in the beach sands as shell fragments or other remains was carried out at the genus or family level. Ecological investigation of the same beach and the recognition of sub-environments (mainly distinguished on the basis of the nature of the substrate and of the water depth) was the key topic that allowed to establish the actual source areas of bioclasts in the Rosa Marina beach sands. The sedimentological analysis (including a physical study of the beach and the calculation of some statistical parameters concerning the grain-size curves) shows that the Rosa Marina beach is nowadays subject to erosion.

Opis:
Results of multidisciplinary research conducted on the island of Rab (Northeastern Adriatic, Croatia) are presented with particular focus on late Roman rural settlements and their economic activities. The settlement in Podšilo bay, Lopar peninsula, is analyzed in more detail, providing evidence on a vibrant local community engaged in diversified craft activities and the exploitation of local land and marine resources. Along with the specificities of its layout and organization, this site also presents unique possibilities to study environmental factors that influenced its setup and economy, but also its demise, tentatively placed within the 6th century AD.

Opis:
Strong expansion of cruise ships traffic and cruising destinations in the Adriatic makes the region ideal for cruise ships routing analysis. The aim of this paper is to detect real cruise ships traffic movement in order to understand how present cruise ships routes are navigationally and environmentally sustainable and safe. Cruise ships characteristic operational demand and navigational routine in relation with regions indented coast line with high level of environmentally preserved areas in landscape of high national value, emphasise importance of real cruise ships routing awareness. The research is based on one year cruise ships traffic monitoring and routes analysis in the Central Adriatic East coast. The results offer detail insight of cruise ships navigational routines in navigationally less defined area that has not been frequent cruising region before. Cruise ships routes comparison is carried out between North Adriatic region, which is well defined with traffic separation schemes and navigational aids and less defined Central and South Adriatic regions. The results show that principle of cruise ships routing differ from standard maritime practice and that operational demand for attractive cruising and passenger experience bring cruise ships close to shores in various demanding navigational situations. That routing practice does not meet criteria of sustainability as it often present high navigational, safety and environmental risk.

Opis:
This article presents the operating principles of the Baltic–Adriatic Transport Corridors – a supranational structure functioning on the background of European countries and on the Polish Baltic Sea coast in particular. It deals with both the issue of transport policy within the framework of this corridor and implemented logistics solutions accompanying changes in goods flow, since the importance of transport corridor is determined not only by infrastructure with adequately high technical parameters, but also by the type of flows which are accomplished via this corridor. And these, in the case of the Baltic–Adriatic transport corridor, are going to increase dynamically in the foreseeable future.
