Opis:
A new model of quadrupolar glass of mixed alkali halide-cyanide crystals is proposed. This model is treated by the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick like procedure. Physical consequences of our approach are discussed. The temperature dependence of the quadrupolar Edwards-Anderson order parameter and elastic constant C$\text{}_{44}$ near the quadrupolar glass transition was obtained.

We report ferromagnetic resonance study of the magnetization reversal in the exchange-coupled MnO/(Ga,Mn)As system. The low-field parts of ferromagnetic resonance spectra measured along [1/10] and [100] directions of (Ga,Mn)As were combined into hysteresis loops, which under field-cooling conditions similarly to SQUID loops are shifted toward negative magnetic fields. The magnetization reversal process revealed by the loops occurred remarkably asymmetric for both sample configurations.

The magnetic and elastic properties of epitaxially grown Mo/Co/Au trilayer systems were investigated by the Brillouin light scattering and a ferromagnetic resonance. Using both experimental methods the perpendicular uniaxial anisotropy and the effective in-plane twofold anisotropy contributions were determined as the function of the cobalt thicknesses. Acoustic phonons analysis shows that the elastic constants are decreased with increasing cobalt layer thicknesses.

For the two interface cubic cuts: sc(110) and sc(111) we consider the existence regions of interface spin-waves of a ferromagnetic bilayer film on the two-dimensional Brillouin zone as to their size and shape versus the respective interface related parameters (interface exchange coupling and intrinsic interface anisotropy) applying the approximation of a very thick bilayer film and the method of Brillouin zone mapping (the three (100) interface cubic orientations have been dealt with earlier [Phys. Rev. B 51, 16008 (1995)]). Of particular interest to us still remains the emergence of interface spin-waves induced by varying dynamic quantities such as the in-plane propagation wave vector k$\text{}_{∥}$. Moreover, in our present investigation, we put especial emphasis on the effect exerted on the Brillouin zone mapping by varying (in the plane perpendicular to the film) the configuration angle of the film magnetization with respect to the film normal. We predict the existence of (at the most two) critical angles $\text{}_{c}$ at which the interface spin-waves emerge. These critical angles are functions of the in-plane wave vector k$\text{}_{∥}$ of interface spin-wave propagation along the interface. Finally, we discuss the effects due to the presence of critical angles with a view to their exploitation in experimental measurements.

Opis:
A simple infinite-range model of axial quadrupolar glass is investigated within the cavity-fields approach inside a pure state and a cluster of pure states. Working at a level of a pure state, the nonlinear susceptibility is derived. When a cluster of pure states is considered, all the known results of the one-step replica-symmetry breaking approach are easily reproduced. Besides, the nonlinear susceptibility and the stability conditions are obtained and related numerical results are presented. In this way the stability range of the replica-symmetry breaking solution, quite difficult to be derived within the replica method, is established on the purely physical ground. An interesting feature is that, at any considered stage, the nonlinear susceptibility diverges at a given temperature T$\text{}_{c}$ where the quadrupolarization and the quadrupolar glass order parameters are nonzero and finite. This may be interpreted as a signal of a glassy phase transition not in the Landau sense.

Opis:
The influence of repetition number N on magnetoresistance, magnetic reversal and structure of sputtered $(Ni_{80}Fe_{20}//Au//Co//Au)_N$ multilayers was investigated. The multilayers are characterized by in-plane $(Ni_{80}Fe_{20})$ and out-of-plane (Co) magnetic anisotropy of ferromagnetic layers and show considerable magnetoresistance effect (ΔR/R) of the giant magnetoresistance type. Increased N results in an enhancement of ΔR/R from about 0.5% for N=1 up to above 5% for N=15. This enhancement is caused by: diminishing the role of electron scattering at the surfaces, decreasing the effect of structural imperfection and the lack of the perpendicular anisotropy of Co layer in the first period. The interpretation is corroborated by low ΔR/R value observed for N=1 and an evolution of the ΔR(H)/R dependence with increasing N. The anisotropy field of Co layers also increases with N.

Oscillations of magnetoresistance and thermoelectric power vs. both nonmagnetic spacer and ferromagnetic slab thicknesses are studied in the current-perpendicular-to-plane geometry, in terms of the single-band tight-binding model. The spin-dependent conductance was calculated from the Kubo formula by means of a recursion Green function technique, and the thermoelectric power directly from the well-known Onsager relations. In general, the observed oscillations may have either just one or two periods. In the latter case the long period of oscillations, related to spectacular beats, is apparently of non-RKKY type. The relative thermoelectric power oscillations are strongly enhanced in comparison with those of the giant magnetoresistance, have the same periods, but different phases and a negative bias.

Within the macroscopic model we have calculated spin-transfer torque in asymmetric spin valves in the diffusive transport limit.Such systems exhibit a non-standard angular dependence of the torque, which leads to current-induced precessional modes at zero external magnetic field. We have found that the frequency of magnetoresistance oscillations exhibits hysteretic behavior when the system is driven between two steady precessional regimes. A finite temperature can suppress the irreversibility and give rise to bistable regime where, both the precessional regimes coexist.

The effect of Mo overlayer on the magnetism of ultrathin Co films grown on Au(111) was studied. The structure and magnetism at the Mo/Co interface were studied by means of depth-resolved X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. The magnetic moment of Co near the Mo/Co interface was reduced in comparison to the inner part of the film for the samples which have in-plane anisotropy. This effect is more prominent in the case of Mo overlayer with higher roughness, and can be attributed to Co-Mo intermixing at the interface.

Ab initio calculations shown that the Co substitution instead of Ni in Ni₂MnGe with the L2₁ crystallographic structure leads to a decrease of the lattice constant and an increase of the total magnetic moment of the Ni_{2-x}Co_{x}MnGe compounds. The Mn(B) has the largest local moment above 3 μ_{B} coupled parallel to moments on the Ni(A,C) and Co(A,C), which are found in the ranges of 0.19÷0.26 μ_{B} for Ni(A,C) and 1.03÷0.97 μ_{B} for Co(A,C) for studied range of x. Using the results stemming from the total energy calculations, the values of bulk modulus and its pressure derivatives are estimated according to the Murnaghan EOS.

Co/Cu multilayers having different bilayer number (total thickness) were electrodeposited on polycrystalline Cu substrates with a strong [100] texture from an electrolyte including Co and Cu ions under potentiostatic control. The structural data from X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed that all films have face-centered cubic (fcc) structure, but their crystal textures change from [100] to [111] as the bilayer number increases. The magnetic analysis by vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) showed that the magnetic moment per volume decreases as the bilayer number increases. Magnetoresistance (MR) measurements were made at room temperature in the magnetic fields of ± 12 kOe using the Van der Pauw (VDP) method with four probes. The samples with the bilayer number less than 111 exhibited giant magnetoresistance (GMR) with a negligible amount of anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR), while the ones with the bilayer number larger than 111 have pure GMR effect.

In the following we present the role of surface scattering at Au/Co and Au/Ni-Fe interfaces in Ni-Fe/Au/Co/Au multilayers deposited in different temperatures. Specularity parameter, which describes the electron scattering, is calculated from fitting in situ collected conductance data with the Fuchs-Namba-Tesanovic model. Application of the parallel resistors model enabled to depict changes between Au/Co and Au/Ni-Fe interfaces within multilayers for each repetition. The correlation between enhanced grain boundary scattering for higher deposition temperatures and surface roughness of Ni-Fe/Au/Co/Au multilayers is found.

The magnetometry and the magnetic force microscopy are used to study the influence of the magnetic domain size on the flux pinning in a superconducting/ferromagnetic bilayer (SFB), in which the S layer is niobium and the F layer is a Co/Pd multilayer with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The domain size is pre-defined using the angle-dependent demagnetization. The enhancement of pinning is found to be the strongest, up to a factor of 6, for narrow domains and small magnetic fields. This result differs from the behavior observed in the SFB in which the F layer is Co/Pt. The difference may be attributed to the degree of the disorder in the domain pattern.
