Opis:
The simplicity of the present model consists in the construction of the Hamiltonian based on the models of quasi-harmonic oscillators coupled to quasi-free electrons with the effective parameters which are estimated by means of the pseudoharmonic approach and coherent potential approximation, respectively. The geometry of a sample is determined by the topological disorder at the surface reflecting the surface roughness. The model is discussed in connection with the friction related to the melting and pre-melting phenomena. The backscattering of electrons seems to be a testing tool useful not only for decorated surfaces but also for quasi-liquid layers.

Opis:
After a brief review on surface phonons, we focus on resonant phonons in adsorbed thin layers. Such resonances may in general be understood within the substrate bulk band as thin layer modes shiften and broaden by the interaction with the substrate phonons. These resonant phonons appear as well-defined peaks in the phonon density of states. Their experimental study started recently by Helium atom scattering spectroscopy. This review will end by a prospective revue done mostly after the presentation of two unpublished results. First the slab resonant phonons may almost be confined in the surface slab even for frequencies falling within the bulk phonon band, if the surface slab is separated from the substrate by a buffer layer. The other prospective unpublished result deals with a model system in which the propagating phonons reach a space point from which they can continue to propagate through two different finite in space channels before reaching again a homogeneous uniform path. Such a system exhibits some frequencies for which the transmission factor vanishes. This phenomenon is related to the resonances associated with the finite additional path offered to the propagation of the phonons.

Opis:
The adsorption isotherms for Ising-Anderson type model Hamiltonian describing the chemisorbed system was calculated. The submonolayer coverage of the substrate surface was considered on the equal footing together with the electronic characteristics of the chemisorbed adatoms in a self-consisting manner. The resulting adsorption isotherms depend in explicit way on the electronic parameters describing the chemisorbed adatoms and substrate metal.

In the current paper, electrical transport properties of 25 nm thick Nb films sputtered on the photosensitive semiconductor BiOCl were investigated in the temperature range 7.5 K ≤ T ≤8.5 K. The influence of green (532 nm) and red (640 nm) laser excitations on resistive superconducting transitions of the niobium thin films on a silicon glass and BiOCl single crystal substrates were studied. The temperature dependences of the resistivity for Nb are in good agreement with the McMillan model which indicates the strong influence of the inverse proximity effect induced by the interface. The increased influence of the BiOCl/Nb interface under laser excitation corresponds to the raising of the ratio of the density of normal to superconductivity carriers in the Tıghtarrow0 limit and this observation is in agreement with the photoconductivity study of BiOCl single crystals.

We report the measurements of dc-magnetization (M), specific heat $(C_{p})$ and electrical resistivity (ρ) of an intermetallic $URu_{0.68}Pd_{0.32}Ge$, that lies at the border between nonmagnetic and magnetic regimes in the magnetic phase diagram of solid solutions $URu_{1-x}Pd_{x}Ge$. The studied composition shows enhanced dc-magnetic susceptibility χ(T) and the Sommerfeld ratio $C_{p}(T)$/T at low temperatures. Below 4 K χ(T), $C_{p}(T)$/T and ρ(T) can be described by χ(T) ∝ $T^{-0.48}$, $C_{p}(T)$/T ∝ √T and ρ(T) ∝ c ln(T)+$AT^{3/2}$, respectively. These observations provide an evidence that $URu_{0.68}Pd_{0.32}Ge$ is a moderately heavy-fermion system with an electronic ground state of non-Fermi liquid character. We found non-linear effect of the magnetization and a large value of the Wilson ratio, which are consistent with the interpretation in terms of magnetic instability.

Opis:
Ti/TiN multilayer films with a few multilayer periods and a total sub-μm thickness were deposited on AISI 304 stainless steel substrates by ion coating deposition technique. To investigate the effect of hydrogen treatment on the corrosion behavior of the multilayers, some of the samples were hydrogen treated after deposition of the first and/or the second Ti interlayer. $\text{}^{14}N(d,\alpha_1) \text{}^{12}C$ nuclear reaction and the Rutherford backscattering spectrometry were used to obtain the atomic composition profiles and thickness of Ti/TiN layers. Nuclear reaction analysis confirmed the presence of two separable TiN layers of comparable thickness on the surface and in depth of the two-period multilayers. These techniques were used to determine the thickness of individual Ti and TiN layers and revealed that the stoichiometry of TiN layers was approximately Ti:N=1:1. Hydrogen depth profile in the prepared samples was obtained by elastic recoil detection analysis. It was found that a remarkable volume of hydrogen was uptaken by the Ti layer in the hydrogen treated samples. The TiN (200) diffraction peak in the X-ray diffraction pattern was observed with different intensities depending on the sample preparation parameters. The corrosion behavior of the multilayers was studied by means of potentiodynamic polarization in 0.5 M NaCl solutions. It was found that the hydrogen treatment of Ti interlayer could potentially improve the corrosion properties of the Ti/TiN layers.

Opis:
The effect of high energy electron beam irradiation on the crystalline structure and mechanical properties of the surface layer of grey cast iron has been investigated by light and electron microscopy, X-ray analysis as well as microhardness measurements. The electron irradiation leads to the formation of modulated structure of the surface layer, which provides the combination of the high hardness level and the high wear resistance. These properties are caused by the high density of the structural defects in austenite phase, the formation of the high number of dispersed carbides and the existence of a set of phases from ledeburite till sorbite with high level of hardness.

The article presents the experimental results of the investigation of the absorption spectra and nonlinear refraction of the metal-dielectric nanocomposite that contains the lithium niobate pyroelectric crystal coated with the silver nanofilms on its surface. The atomic force microscopy surface research of these crystals with and without films are also provided. The nanowidth silver films impact on optical spectra and nonlinear refraction of LiNbO₃-Ag nanocomposite was analyzed depending on the sign of the side charge of the crystal, that contain nanofilms.

The changes of the surface topography of stainless-steel and aluminium electrodes occurring due to the action of electric pulses which are utilized for cell electroporation, have been studied by using atomic force microscopy. The surfaces of the polished stainless-steel electrodes were smooth - the average roughness was 13-17 nm and the total roughness 140-180 nm. The total roughness of the aluminium electrodes was about 320 nm. After the treatment of the chambers filled with 154 mM NaCl solution by a series of short (20-40 μs), high-voltage (4 kV) pulses with the total dissolution charge of 0.20-0.26 A s/$cm^{2}$, the roughness of the surface of the electrodes has increased, depending on the total amount of the electric charge that has passed through the unit area of the electrode. Up to a two- and threefold increase of the surface roughness of the stainless-steel and aluminium anodes respectively was observed due to the dissolution of the anode material. Therefore, the use of high-voltage electric pulses leads to the increase of the inhomogeneity of the electric field at the electrode, which facilitates the occurrence of the electric breakdown of the liquid samples and causes non-equal treatment of each cell.

Ion-beam modification of materials whose service properties are mainly controlled by the surface composition is of especial interest, in particular, for electrocatalysts, namely electrodes of fuel cells - perspective chemical current sources. A catalyst is needed for effective operation of fuel cell. In this paper active layers of the electrocatalysts were prepared by ion beam assisted deposition of catalytic (platinum) and activating (cerium) metals onto carbon (AVCarb® Carbon Fiber Paper P50 and Toray Carbon Fiber Paper TGP-H-060 T) catalyst supports. Formation of layers by ion beam assisted deposition by means of the deposition of metal and mixing of precipitating layer with the substrate by accelerated ions of the same metal, was carried out. Metal deposition and mixing between the precipitable layer and surface of the substrate by accelerated (U=10 kV) ions of the same metal were conducted from a neutral vapor fraction and plasma of vacuum arc discharge of a pulsed electric arc ion source. Study of the morphology and composition of layers was carried out by the scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis, X-ray fluorescence analysis, and the Rutherford backscattering spectrometry methods. According to the investigations with the use of cyclic voltammetry, the electrocatalysts with the prepared layers exhibited catalytic activity in the reactions of electrochemical oxidation of methanol and ethanol, which form the basis for the principle of operation of low temperature direct methanol and direct ethanol fuel cells.
