Opis:
Metamict minerals contain radioactive elements that degrade the crystal structure of the minerals. The degradation occurs primarily through progressive overlapping recoil nuclei collision cascades from α-decays of $\text{}^{238}U$, $\text{}^{232}Th$, $\text{}^{235}U$ and their daughter products. We report the results of $\text{}^{57}Fe$ Mössbauer spectroscopy, gamma-ray spectrometry and microprobe analysis of three partially metamict allanites, $(Ca,Ce,REE)_2(Fe^{2+},Fe^{3+})$$(Al,Fe^{3+})_2O[Si_2O_7][SiO_4](OH)$ where REE stands for rare earth elements. The samples were collected in pegmatites from Reno, Nevada (USA), Franklin, New Jersey (USA) and Nya Bastnas Field (Sweden). The absorbed α-dose for these minerals was found to range from $5.8×10^{14}$ α-decay/mg for the allanite from Reno to $1.9×10^{15}$ α-decay/mg for the allanite from Franklin. The Mössbauer spectra show a decrease in the $Fe^{2+}$ doublet intensity with increasing absorbed α-dose. We also observe an increase in the line widths of the $Fe^{2+}$ and $Fe^{3+}$ doublets with increasing absorbed α-dose.

Opis:
In this work, illite-based ceramic body with power plant fly ash addition (60 wt.% of illite, 30 wt.% of fly ash and 10 wt.% of illite fired at 1100°C) was investigated by the thermal analysis techniques (differential thermal analysis, thermodilatometry and thermogravimetry) and the acoustic emission technique. The green body was heated up to 1100°C at three different rates 2.5, 5, 10 K/min. The most intense acoustic emission was recorded at the highest rate 10 K/min. Mutual correlations between thermal analyses and acoustic emission data were also examined. The first acoustic emission response appears at 430°C, corresponding to a small endotherm on the DTA curve, where the thermal decomposition of mineral portlandite takes place. In the temperature range from 600 to 900°C, high acoustic emission activity correlates with dehydroxylation and expansion of the sample. At temperatures higher than 800°C, the source of acoustic emission signals is the thermal decomposition of calcite. The amorphous phase created from illite at 920°C becomes pyroplastic, therefore it is not documented by the acoustic emission technique.

Opis:
The application of real space renormalization group methods to quantum lattice models has become a topic of great interest following the development of the density matrix renormalization group by White. This method has been used to find the ground and low-lying excited state energies and wave functions of quantum spin models in which the form of the ground state is not clear, for instance because the interactions are frustrated. It has also been applied to fermion problems where the tendency for localization due to the strong Coulomb repulsion is opposed by the lowering of the kinetic energy which occurs as a result of electron transfer. The approach is particularly suitable for one-, or quasi-one-dimensional problems. The method involves truncating the Hilbert space in a systematic and optimised manner. Results for the ground state energy are thus variational bounds. The results for low-lying energies and correlation functions for one-dimensional systems have unprecedented accuracy and the method has become the method of choice for solving one-dimensional quantum spin problems. We review the method and results obtained for the spin-1 chain with biquadratic exchange as well as the spin-1/2 model with competing nearest and next nearest neighbour exchange will be described. More recently, the density matrix renormalization group has been applied to reformulate the coupling constant renormalization group approach which is appropriate for the study of critical properties. This approach has been applied to the anisotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain. Finally, we discuss recent work which has borne promising applications in two dimensions - the Ising model and the two-dimensional Hubbard model.

Air pollution has become a mass phenomenon, a major and global problem of modern society, affecting billions of people and environment. People are exposed to various levels of pollutants not just in the outdoor environment, but also in indoors. The quality of life and well-being of employees can be increased by incorporating ornamental plants in the work environment. Among the great variety of plants species able to remove/reduce indoor air pollutants Dracaena deremensis, Sansevieria trifasciata and Ficus elastica were hereby investigated. Their ability to remove chemical pollutants was evaluated in real-life conditions and the changes induced by the environmental stress on the structure and biochemical composition of the plants leaves were evidenced by the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The most pronounced concentration decrease was noticed for the CO₂ (58.33% removed concentration), whereas the mean value of the removed concentration of other chemical pollutants was of ≈ 25%. The Fourier transform infrared spectra analysis revealed that, although the plants are subjected to the chemical pollutants action, they maintain the structure by adjusting their metabolism. A decrease in the overall protein contribution in the amide bands and an increase of the bands assigned to polysaccharide vibrations, illustrate the consequences of the pollution action. Moreover, the chlorophyll presence is evidenced in the IR spectra of all samples by the bands around 1040, 1445, 1620, and 1735 cm^{-1}. The results show that the Fourier transform infrared spectra are an important source of information for the rapid characterization of the chemical structure of the biological systems under environmental stress.

Motivated by the properties of one-dimensional lattice systems with asymmetric on-site potential, one can formulate a hypothesis of an asymmetry driven phase transformation. Characteristic feature of one-dimensional systems exhibiting asymmetry driven phase transformation is a sequence of the two phase conversions. In particular class of such systems with a triple-well potential, phase conversions of one-dimensional systems would evolve into a sequence of two phase transitions in three-dimensional models. We propose here a model of three-dimensional system exhibiting a sequence of two first order asymmetry driven phase transitions.

An Ising model with competing interactions has recently been studied extensively because of the appearance of nontrivial magnetic orderings. In this paper, we study the phase diagrams for the Ising model on a Cayley tree with competing nearest-neighbor interactions J and ternary prolonged interactions $J_{t_{p}}$ on a Cayley tree of arbitrary order k and compare with the phase diagrams obtained in Uguz et al. and Vannimenus results for the Ising model on a Cayley tree with competing nearest-neighbor interactions J and ternary prolonged interactions $J_{p}$. For some values of k, we obtain phase diagrams of the model. We clarify the role of order k of the Cayley tree. We also plot the variation of the wave vector with temperature.

Cold atomic gases placed in optical lattices enable studies of simple condensed matter theory models with parameters that may be tuned relatively easily. When the optical potential is randomized (e.g. using laser speckle to create a random intensity distribution) one may be able to observe Anderson localization of matter waves for non-interacting bosons, the so-called Bose glass in the presence of interactions, as well as the Fermi glass or quantum spin glass for mixtures of fermions and bosons.

Interactions of domain walls are analyzed with relevance to formation of stationary bubbles (bound state of two domain walls) and bound states of many domains in one-dimensional systems. We investigate the domain structures in ferromagnets which are described with the Landau-Lifshitz equation as well as the domains in critical systems described with the Ginzburg-Landau equation. Supplementing previous author studies on the creation of hard bubbles [formed by one Bloch domain wall and one Néel (Ising) domain wall] in the presence of an external (magnetic) field, the soft bubbles consisting of two Bloch domain walls or two Néel (Ising) domain walls are studied in detail. The interactions of two domain walls of the same kind are studied in the framework of a perturbation calculus.

Magnetization, M, and susceptibility, χ, measurements showed both strong lowering of magnetic moment in comparison with $CuCr_2Se_4$ matrix and zero-field-cooling-field-cooling susceptibility splitting characteristic for the spin-glass behaviour. Isothermal magnetization curves, M(H), easy saturate and large values both of the Curie $T_{C}$=253 K and Curie-Weiss θ=283.5 K temperatures indicate the ferromagnetic order which coexists with the spin-glass state. The critical behaviour investigated around the paramagnetic-ferromagnetic phase transition revealed that the values of critical exponents are close to those predicted by the mean field model for long-range magnetic interactions.

Opis:
Ferritin is a biological iron storage biomacromolecule, consisting of a spherical protein shell (apoferritin) and mineral iron core. It plays a crucial role in the pathological processes of disrupted iron homeostasis followed by iron accumulation, linked with various disorders (e.g. neuroinflammation, neurodegeneration, cirrhosis, cancer, etc.) In vitro reconstructed ferritin, with the assistance of a non-invasive magnetic resonance imaging technique, has the potential to become a suitable biomarker of these pathological processes. Through gradient echo pulse sequencing, we were able to clearly distinguish between native (physiological) and reconstructed/iron-overloaded (pathological) ferritin, which can serve as a starting point for the development of a method for their differentiation. Such method is necessary for the early diagnosis of iron-based diseases.

We analyze the localization of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a one-dimensional bichromatic quasi-periodic optical-lattice potential by numerically solving the 1D Gross-Pitaevskii equation (1D GPE). We first derive the 1D Gross-Pitaevskii equation from the dimensional reduction of the 3D quantum field theory of interacting bosons obtaining two coupled differential equations (for axial wave fuction and space-time dependent transverse width) which reduce to the 1D Gross-Pitaevskii equation under strict conditions. Then, by using the 1D Gross-Pitaevskii equation we report the suppression of localization in the interacting Bose-Einstein condensate when the repulsive scattering length between bosonic atoms is sufficiently large.

We study the nucleation of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) droplets from the hadronic gas phase, based on the calculation of the difference in free energy in the QGP and hadronic gas phases. We investigate this difference in free energy by modeling it in different cases, when the surface tension of the QGP bubble is considered or not. We calculate the free energies of both hadronic gas consisting of massive pions and plasma droplet with up, down and strange quarks additionally to gluons, for different SU ≤ft( 3 ıght) color representations of the QGP, namely the color singlet, color octet, and color 27-plet. The behavior of the obtained change in free energy is examined with varying radius of the QGP bubble, and at different temperatures. The effect of the surface contribution on the nucleated bubble is also investigated and compared to the case without this contribution.
