Opis:
This paper presents the construction and operation principle of the modified magnetic gear. For the presented gear construction (with gear ratio 4:1) a series of calculations was carried out using two-dimensional numerical field model. On the base of field calculations, an analysis of the distribution of the radial component of the magnetic flux density in the air gaps were performed. The magnetic torque characteristics were calculated using the Maxwell Stress Tensor Method.
W pracy przedstawiono budowę oraz zasadę działania zmodyfikowanej przekładni magnetycznej. Dla przykładowej konstrukcji przekładni, o przełożeniu 4:1, opracowano dwuwymiarowy model numeryczny, dla którego wykonano szereg obliczeń polowych. Przeprowadzono analizę rozkładu składowej promieniowej indukcji magnetycznej w szczelinach powietrznych. Za pomocą metody tensora naprężeń Maxwella wyznaczono charakterystyki przenoszonego momentu magnetycznego.

Opis:
This work presents a study of crack propagation with a new 2D finite element method with the stretching of the mesh. This method affects at each propagation step new coordinates of each element node of the mesh. The structure is divided to areas and each area has its own coordinate formulas. A program in FORTRAN allows us to create a parametric mesh, which keeps the same number of nodes and elements during different steps of crack propagation. The nodes are stretched using the criterion of maximum circumferential stress (MCS). The fracture parameters such as stress intensity factors in modes I and II and the orientation angles are calculated by solving the problem by the finite element code ABAQUS.

Opis:
A method of the numerical solution of a 2-D linear advection equation is proposed. In the solution, the modified finite element method and directional splitting technique is used. For the time integration the two-step differential scheme is used. Two weighting parameters introduced into the schemes determine the accuracy and stability of the solution. Numerical diffusion and dispersion tensors are derived for the pure advection equation solved using the proposed method. They enable the explanation of numerical properties and applicability of this scheme. The proposed scheme is of third-order accuracy and is adaptive, allowing for simultaneous elimination of numerical diffusion and dispersion from the solution of a 2-D advection equation.

Opis:
A FEM-BEM coupling approach is used for acoustic fluid-structure interaction analysis. The FEM is used to model the structure and the BEM is used to model the exterior acoustic domain. The aim of this work is to improve the computational efficiency and accuracy of the conventional FEM-BEM coupling approach. The fast multipole method (FMM) is applied to accelerating the matrix-vector products in BEM. The Burton-Miller formulation is used to overcome the fictitious eigen-frequency problem when using a single Helmholtz boundary integral equation for exterior acoustic problems. The continuous higher order boundary elements and discontinuous higher order boundary elements for 2D problem are developed in this work to achieve higher accuracy in the coupling analysis. The performance for coupled element types is compared via a simple example with analytical solution, and the optimal element type is obtained. Numerical examples are presented to show the relative errors of different coupled element types.

Opis:
The paper concerns an idea of preparing auxiliary equations and data for the finite element method assembly. This is made for a specific element type and element order and is referred to as the pre-assembly. Most importantly the prepared auxiliary equations require that only the element’s placement (coordinates) needs to be known, while the remaining coefficients that are required are stored in data sheets. The pre-assembly allows programmers who implement the FEM to significantly reduce the effort put into the assembly algorithm through its replacement by a few simple equations and the application of the prepared data. These data sheets can be prepared and can be utilized by FEM programmers. The construction of these data sheets for non-curvilinear quadrilateral Lagrangian elements (of any selected order) is explained in this paper.

The paper is devoted to the application of the swarm methods and the finite element method to optimization of the stiffeners location in the 2-D structures (plane stress, bending plates and shells). The structures are optimized for the stress and displacement criteria. The numerical examples demonstrate that the method based on the swarm computation is an effective technique for solving the computer aided optimal design. The additional comparisons of the effectiveness of the particle swarm optimizer (PSO) and evolutionary algorithms (EA) are presented.

Stability analysis
Opis:
Evaluations of an earth-fill dam throughout its service life must ensure the stability of it against seepage and slope failure. This study presents the seepage and slope stability of the Koga earth-fill dam. The analyses were carried out using a finite element based PLAXIS 2D software, and covers the whole dam body; including 20 m of foundation depth. The behavior of both the body and the foundation of the dam were described using the Mohr-Coulomb criterion. Assessments of safety factor and quantity of seepage through the main body of the dam and foundation were carried out at different critical loading conditions. In this study, seepage analysis was undertaken of flow rate, pore water distribution and location of phreatic line. Additional actual field data measurements and observatory investigation were also carried out. From the simulated results, the average flow rate of seepage for the entire length of the body of the dam at normal pool level was equal to 0.06085 m3/s, whereas the figure for that through the foundation of the dam was 0.01937 m3/s. Moreover, total seepage through the main body of the dam at the current reservoir level was 0.04982 m3/s, while the actually measured quantity of seepage accumulated at the downstream toe of the dam was 0.04644 m3/s. The simulated and measured seepage discharges are 93.2 % similar. Based on the result of this study, the resulting factor of safety values during end of construction, steady state condition and rapid drawdown condition were 1.6221, 1.6136 and 1.2199, respectively. Using recommended design standards: United States army corps of engineers (USACE), British dam society (BDS) and Canadian dam association (CDA), the slope stability analysis of the Koga earth dam at all critical loading conditions are safe.

An open-source Python package is presented, ReMo3D, which allows the generation of synthetic normal and lateral resistivity logs for 2D and 3D models. The package is built around a finite element mesh generator Gmsh and a high-performance multiphysics finite element software Netgen/NGSolve and supports distributed-memory parallel computation. The examples included in the paper show that the developed software can accurately simulate the measurement process and produce detailed synthetic normal and lateral resistivity logs. In addition, basic information about normal and lateral tools such as tool configurations, measurement principles, nomenclature and a brief history of utilization is included in the paper.

Opis:
The microscale deformation behaviour of the Al-4.5Cu-2Mg alloy has been studied to understand the influence of various processing routes and conditions, i.e. the gravity casting with and without grain refiner, the rheocast process and the strain induced melt activation (SIMA) process. The micromechanics based simulations have been carried out on the optical microstructures of the alloy by 2D representative volume elements (RVEs) employing two different boundary conditions. Microstructural morphology, such as the grain size, the shape and the volume fraction of α-Al and binary eutectic phases have a significant effect on the stress and strain distribution and the plastic strain localization of the alloy. It is found that the stress and strain distribution became more uniform with increasing the globularity of the α-Al grain and the α-Al phase volume fraction. The simulated RVEs also reveals that the eutectic phase carries more load, but least ductility with respect to the α-Al phase. The SIMA processed alloy contains more uniform stress distribution with less stress localization which ensures better mechanical property than the gravity cast, grain refined and rheocast alloy.

Opis:
Masonry arches are regularly used in construction. The main purpose of this work was to perform numerical calculations using the Finite Element Method to estimate the load capacity of the designed masonry arch and to identify optimal locations for sensors on a real structure to aid advanced structural analysis. The model was implemented in two computer programs - Autodesk Robot and DIANA, and the results were compared. The arch was analysed statically and dynamically in the elastic range. A preliminary 2D static analysis was performed in Autodesk Robot, while in DIANA both flat and spatial models were analysed using both static and dynamic analysis. Numerical estimation of the load capacity of the masonry structure gave the opportunity to show the basic failure mechanisms together with the character of the stress distribution as well as the eigenfrequencies and eigenmodes. Satisfactory results were obtained, after a review of the literature.
