Opis:
Borexino, a real-time device for low energy neutrino spectroscopy, has completed the construction phase at the middle of 2006 in the Underground Laboratories at Gran Sasso, Italy. The detector has been filled with 1300 tons of highly purified scintillator and 2600 tons of ultrapure water as external shield and, since May 16th, 2007, is under data taking. The experimental goal, the direct measurement of flux of $\text{}^7Be$ solar neutrinos of all flavour via neutrino-electron scattering in an ultrapure scintillator liquid, has been achieved and further measurements (PP, PeP, CNO neutrinos, geoneutrinos, supernova) are object of future results. The paper describes the purification methods adopted in Borexino, to achieve unique and unprecedented results on the scintillator purity. Requirements and purification methods will be reported.

Low background scintillation setup has been developed that exhibits 3 orders of magnitude lower counting rate of a large volume (2.1 kg) CdWO₄ detector in the energy region 0.5-2.6 MeV, and one order of magnitude above 3 MeV. The background reduction was achieved by application of radiopure passive shield, active plastic-scintillation muon veto placed above the setup and pulse-shape discrimination. Construction of additional plastic scintillation counters is in progress to reduce the residual cosmic muons background. The setup can be applied to develop radiopure scintillators, measure radioactive contamination of materials, carry out small scale low counting experiments.

In addition to PWO and CsI(Tl) crystals, cerium doped LYSO crystal is considered for the electromagnetic calorimeter part of the Turkish Accelerator Center Particle Factory (TAC-PF) detector, because of its high light yield, fast decay time and good radiation hardness. In this work, LYSO crystals arranged in 3× 3 and 5× 5 matrices have been simulated against photons in the energy range between 50 MeV and 2 GeV, using Geant4 simulation code. Energy resolutions have been estimated considering the contribution of photoelectron statistics coming from the avalanche and PIN photodiodes.

Structural and mechanical characteristics of complex oxide compounds $Lu_{2x}Gd_{2-2x}SiO_{5}:Ce$ (LGSO) crystals were studied at different cation ratio in the host. For this purpose, a series of LGSO crystals with Lu concentration 5-70 at.% has been grown by the Czochralski method. Anisotropy of mechanical properties for these materials has been studied. The obtained results can be useful at choice of optimal growth direction for crystals and at mechanical processing of scintillation elements.

For the first time a molecule of 2-(4-styrylphenyl)benzoxazole containing benzoxazole and stilbene groups is applied as a scintillator dopant acting as a wavelength shifter. In this article a light yield of the plastic scintillator, prepared from styrene doped with 2 wt% of 2,5-diphenylbenzoxazole and 0.03 wt% of 2-(4-styrylphenyl)benzoxazole, is determined to be as large as 60% ± 2% of the anthracene light output. There is a potential to improve this value in the future by the optimization of the additives concentrations.

Radioactivity is mainly due to natural ones from earth and also from outside of the atmosphere so-called cosmic radiation. Although radiation sources and their dose effect on humans are known, there is still some conflict on their health effect especially on dental restoration. The limited data for radioactive dental materials and their potential risks for patient makes those materials interesting to be investigated. For this purposes, uranium, thorium and potassium activity have been measured in some dental restorative materials, such as resin composites containing silica and zirconia particles as filler loading, using gamma spectrometer system with NaI(Tl) detector.

The production of ²²²Rn depends on the activity concentrations of ²²⁶Ra in the earth's crust, in soil, rock and water. Radon concentration levels are strongly affected by atmospheric influences such as rainfall, real humidity, temperature and barometric pressure, rather than by chemical processes, as it is an inert gas. In particular the exhalation of radon is positively correlated with moisture content, temperature and negatively with pressure, so that these factors must be considered in the determination of exhalation rates in environmental measurements. In this study, radon concentrations in soil gas were continuously monitored for nine months in ten minutes periods, using AlphaGUARD system and the fluctuations of radon concentration were compared with the regional meteorologic data, using time graphs.

Opis:
The studies of time-resolved dose dependences of conductivity and luminescence in ZnSe crystals at various temperatures (8, 85, 295, and 430 K) under X-ray and UV-excitation have revealed that dose dependences under X-ray excitation build up much more slowly and are more informative in comparison with UV-excitation. It is due to high penetrating depth of X-ray radiation and respective involvement of a large sample volume in the kinetic processes. Also, due to the local inhomogeneity of the excitation in the absorption of X-quantum, a significant share of the generated electron-hole pairs recombine in this local area creating a scintillation pulse, and not participating in the conductivity. The delay in the onset of the X-ray conductivity buildup at 8 K for several seconds is due to the high efficiency of the localization of free carriers in the traps, all of which become deep at this temperature. The different buildups of various bands of luminescence of irradiation time can be explained by not only different concentration of luminescence centers but also by their localization in various sections of free charge carriers. Dose dependences of the luminescence and conductivity also show that the scintillation pulse amplitudes and the current pulse amplitudes of the X-ray conductivity are not constant during irradiation of the ZnSe crystals.

Thermoluminescence of CaF$\text{}_{2}$:Ce, BaF$\text{}_{2}$, and BaF$\text{}_{2}$:Ce irradiated at room temperature is reported. X-ray induced emission spectra of the samples show that both excitonic (due to e$\text{}^{-}$+V$\text{}_{K}$ recombination) and Ce$\text{}^{3+}$ d-f luminescence may contribute to thermoluminescence signal. The simple Randall-Wilkins model is used to deconvolute glow curves into seven to eight first-order peaks. Parameters of all traps are calculated and correlations between peaks in the curves of the examined materials are discussed.

A Monte Carlo code was written to determine the saturation thickness for multiply scattered gamma rays from aluminium targets. Interactions of incident gamma rays with the energies of 123, 279, 360, 511, 662, 1115, and 1250 keV were simulated. This work aims to design a convenient code which can be used in investigations on gamma backscattering. Obtained results for saturation thickness values have been compared with experimental ones and the Monte Carlo N-particle (MCNP) code results, and showed good agreement. Also, based on the similar behavior of number of multiple scattered photons between these three methods, the expected spectrum of singly or multiply scattered photons which is not possible to observe with experiment has been presented.

In this paper we review results of radioluminescence studies on two scintillator materials, LuAlO$\text{}_{3}$ and YAlO$\text{}_{3}$, activated with Ce. The experiments include measurements of ther moluminescence, isothermal phosphorescence decays, scintillation light yield as function of temperature, and scintillation time profiles under gamma excitation. Experimental results are interpreted in the frame of a simple kinetic model that includes a number of electron traps. We have identified and characterized a number of deep and shallow traps and demonstrated that traps in LuAlO$\text{}_{3}$:Ce are deeper than corresponding traps in YAlO$\text{}_{3}$:Ce. Unlike deep traps which are responsible for some scintillation light loss but otherwise do not have any impact on generation of scintillation light, shallow traps are shown to actively interfere with the process of radiative recombination via Ce ions. We demonstrate that shallow traps are responsible for some as yet unexplained observations including a higher room temperature light yield of YAlO$\text{}_{3}$:Ce and its longer scintillation decay time, as well as a longer scintillation rise time in LuAlO$\text{}_{3}$:Ce.

Axial PET is a novel PET concept based on axially oriented crystals. The axial orientation of the scintillating elements mitigates the uncertainty in the determination of the depth of interaction and provides a scalable and flexible design than can be adapted to different imaging scenarios. Opis:
The Czochralski method is one of the very few melt growth techniques that are industry friendly when considering the combination of quality, dimensions, and cost of the produced crystals suitable for their commercialization in scintillation detectors. This method is one of the oldest and most developed crystal growth processes regarding an adequate understanding the physical phenomena observed during solidification process and its practical expansion especially in the industrial scale production. It allows controllable formation of single-crystalline cylindrical ingots of various inorganic scintillation materials. The review summarizes recent progress on the Czochralski growth of a number of scintillation materials. The oxide crystals are mainly considered including the Ce and Pr-doped $RE_3Al_5O_{12}$, RE = Y, Lu, aluminum garnets and newly discovered ultraefficient Ce-doped $Gd_3(Ga,Al)_5O_{12}$ multicomponent garnet, high density $PbWO_4$ and $CdWO_4$ tungstates, Ce-doped $RE_2SiO_5$, RE = Y, Gd, Lu, oxyorthosilicates and $(Y,Lu)AlO_3$ aluminum perovskites and finally the classical $Bi_4Ge_3O_{12}$ scintillator. Additionally, the details of the growth of other practically important non-oxide crystals, namely the Ce and Eu-doped $LiCaAlF_6$ neutron and ultraefficient Ce-doped $LaBr_3$ scintillators, are discussed. The potential of novel micro-pulling down growth method is briefly described in the combinatorial search for new scintillator materials. Selected luminescence and scintillation characteristics including the spectra and decay kinetics, light yield and radiation resistance are also illustrated and overviewed.
