Opis:
In this article the author tries to look at Jesus Christ as a king. The term „king” appeares on pages of the New and the Old Testament many times. Having that in mind the author analyzes the portrait of Jesus as a king in the Gospel according to St John. He does that particularly in the de- scription of the suffering of the Master from Nazareth. St John mentions Christ's royal title mainly in the account of Jesus being questionned by Pilate, his suffering on Golgotha as well as in the de- cription of events that take place after his death. The analysis of these facts will reveal the signific- ance of Jesus's royal title as well as in what St John saw the royal nature of Jesus and finally what his royal activity was based on.

The article constitutes the third part of the analysis of Sir 6:18-37 – the pericope in which Sirach presents his reflections on the acquisition of wisdom. Following the admonition addressed to his disciple to undergo wisdom education/formation (6:18-22) and to yield to wisdom itself (6:23-31), the sage enumerates the means that are essential to acquire wisdom (6:32-37). The pericope under analysis here may be divided into three sections. Verses 32-33 refer to a disciple’s freedom and encourage him to make a choice; they motivate him to undertake some actions that will lead to the acquisition of wisdom and they disclose the results of such an effort. In the second section (vv. 34-36) the sage suggests to his disciple concrete means that are necessary for the acquisition of wisdom. The pericope’s closing verse (v. 37) focuses on God’s role in the process. The first and most important step on the way to the acquisition of wisdom is listening (6:33.35). Subsequently, Sirach emphasizes the role played in the acquisition of wisdom by the elders (6:34) and sages (6:36) as well as by the contemplation of God’s commandments (6:37).

Opis:
The main subject of Sir 6:18-37 is acquisition of wisdom. The pericopemay be divided into three parts: vv. 18-22 present the prerequisite for the acquisition of wisdom, namely undergoing wisdom formation; vv. 23-31 deal with one’s submission to wisdom, while the last fragment (vv. 32-37) focuses on the means necessary to obtain wisdom. The present article constitutes an analysis of the first part of Sir 6:18-37, that is Sir 6:18-22. Two sections may be distinguished within this excerpt - in the first one (vv. 18-19) the sage makes use of agricultural imagery to encourage his disciple to make a patient effort to seek wisdom, since the acquisition of wisdom is a long-lasting process that requires a lot of discipline (the process spans a person’s whole life; cf. Sir 6:18). The author emphasizes, however, that those who seek wisdom and undergo wisdom formation will soon be able to take advantage of its fruit. In the second section (vv. 20-22) the author describes a person who refuses to undergo wisdom formation as uneducated (cf. 6:20a) and devoid of intellectual abilities (literally, heartless; cf.6:20b). Lacking patience, such a person refuses to make an effort to receive wisdom education and rejects wisdom altogether. Thus, they will never become wise. Even though wisdom is the province of the few only (cf. 6:22), it is accessible to anyone, regardless of the person’s origin, social status or other external conditions. There is, however, one vital prerequisite, namely, a person’s inner attitude or disposition, their willingness to make an effort and their patience. Only few people fulfil these conditions and acquire wisdom.

Opis:
The second part of Sir 6:18-37 (vv. 23-31) is a continuation of the pericope’s first part (vv. 18-22). Unlike the first part devoted to wisdom formation, however, the second part focuses on yielding to wisdom and its consequences. Sir 6:23-31 may be divided into three sections. The first one (vv. 23-25) is characterized by the deployment of images connected with servitude, the second one (vv. 26-28) employs the imagery of hunting, whilst the third section (vv. 29-31) returns to the slavery imagery of part one. The second part of Sir 6:18-37 thus has a concentric structure with vv. 6:26-28 as its centre. The fragments framing the central part evince the development of the sage’s thought: while section one (vv. 23-25) concentrates only on yielding to wisdom, of giving up on personal freedom and of the hardships the search for wisdom entails, section three in its allusions to section one depicts the glorious future awaiting those willing to make an effort to acquire wisdom. To acquire wisdom, it is necessary to yield to it fully, the way a slave does to his master. A failure to do so prevents one from the acquisition of wisdom. The second prerequisite is a persistent search for wisdom that should encompass all spheres of life. The sage also indicates the fruits the search for wisdom brings, which include rest, joy, and happiness that wisdom imparts to all those that attain it. In the concluding section Sirach presents the highest distinctions available to those who make an effort and acquire wisdom.

Opis:
During the interrogation of Jesus before the tribunal of Pilate a question is posed: “What is truth?” (Gospel of John). The author makes it a canvas of the article and on this basis in the first part he wants to present similarities and differences in perception of truth in Jewish and Greco-Roman tradition. He starts from the meaning of the Hebrew term ’emet and analyses its use in the Old Testamental environment as well as in the intertestamental period (Qumran, Philo of Alexandria). The term ’emet is much more capacious than its Polish equivalent and it means the truth as well as faithfulness, reliability, stability. In the OT writings it plays an important role in relation to God and His word as well as God’s deeds (eg. the Law, the Covenant), and together with the word hesed it constitutes a characteristic hendiadys. The Jews, however, knew also use of the term ’emet similar to the contemporary (compliance of a spoken judgment with reality; in this way it was used in everyday speech and the judiciary). In later texts it appears in the sense of knowledge hidden from the profanes, having its source in heaven and passed by messengers-angels to sages and prophets. Those in turn were to instruct worthy people, who in this way are acquainted with God’s plans. In the Greek culture, at least from the times of Parmenides, the truth (alētheia) was identified with being. Some philosophers identified pre-being with Deity (Xenophanes) or the Rule/Rules of the world (archē/archai). This concept was professed, among others, by Socrates, Plato and Aristotle, although each one of them within specifically conceived metaphysics. The objective nature of truth was negated by sophists, followed by agnostics. In other philosophical schools alētheia was conceived in close relation to ethics. However, depending on the schools and even on the period of their development, certain changes occurred, as in the case of intermediate and younger Academy (moderate skepticism and probabilism). In Rome, where the stoic mainstream and eclecticism (Cicero) dominated, awareness of the variety of definitions of truth led to the attitude of keeping distance to any certainties. Philosophising Romans, especially the skeptics and eclectics, referred to the principle of probability and common sense.

Discussion regarding the use and nature of the term “truth” in John’s (Corpus Johanneum) has a long record going back to the XIX century. Scholars of such a calibre as were Dodd or Bultmann drew their attention to Hellenic circles (including Platonic and Gnostic) as the main source of inspiration for John’s interpretation of truth. However, over the course of time, we have noticed a turn towards enhancement of literature of Judaism of that time, including texts from Qumran. After discussing status questionis lexeme alētheia was analysed in the texts of Corpus Johanneum. Conclusions resulting from the analysis lead to the view focusing on non-homogeneous influences and also on a considerable contribution of John’s own circles and that of the early Church.

Sensory Turn

Quali(a)tative Inquiry
Opis:
This paper begins by tracing the sensory turn in the human sciences—most notably, history and anthropology—which, in turn, gave rise to the interdisciplinary field of sensory studies. The latter field is articulated around the concept of the sensorium (defined as the entire sensory apparatus, including the extension of the senses via diverse media, as an operational complex) and the notion of qualia (defined as those aspects of the material world, such as color and sound, that are contingent on the human perceptual apparatus—in contrast to the inherent or elementary properties of materials, such as number or form, which are not). Sense-based research in the human sciences is tied to sensing and making sense together with others. Its methodology of choice is sensory ethnography, or “participant sensation.” This method departs from the emphasis on observation in conventional qualitative research, as well as the latter’s reliance on such verbocentric methods as the questionnaire or focus group. Sensory ethnography highlights the primacy of the quali(a)tative dimensions of our being together in society. It extrapolates on Georg Simmel’s point: “That we get involved in interactions at all depends on the fact that we have a sensory effect upon one another” (as cited in Howes 2013). In part II of this paper, a critique is presented of the diminution of the quali(a)tative in the context of the Scientific Revolution of the sixteenth and seventeenth century, the cognitive revolution of the mid-twentieth century, and the scientization of the senses in the Sensory Evaluation Research Laboratory. These revolutions are problematized for their lopsidedness: the privileging of the infrasensible over the sensible and elemental (or atomistic) over the phenomenal in the case of the Scientific Revolution; the neuronal over the sensual and social in the case of the cognitive revolution; and, the unimodal (or one-sensation- and one-sense-at-a-time) over the multimodal, as well as the reduction of “significance” to the statistical, in the case of the research protocols of the sensory science laboratory. The paper concludes by presenting the results of a series of case studies in sensory ethnography that push the bounds of sense by leading with the senses and bringing the quali(a)tative back in.

Contraceptives are methods used to prevent unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. It is used by both males and females that are sexually active. This study aimed at examining the awareness and use of contraceptives among female undergraduates in Federal University Oye Ekiti, Nigeria. It examined the age of sexual debut as well as frequency of contraceptives use. The study adopted the Theory of Planned Behavior (Ajzen & Fishbein, 1980) as its theoretical framework. It was a survey carried out among female undergraduates in the six faculties of the university at Oye, Ekiti. The sample size was 200 respondents randomly selected from females in the faculties. Questionnaire was the main instrument of data collection while books and academic journals were used as supporting sources. Data collected was coded and analyzed with SPSS version 2.0. The study concluded that female undergraduates of FUOYE were mostly between 16–25 years (85.5%), majority (69%) had their first sexual intercourse between 16 and 18 years, 100% of the respondents were aware of and (58%) use contraceptives frequently to prevent unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. Majority got to know about contraceptives through their friends (45.5%) and 20% equally (boyfriends and Google). Majority (76.5%) had only one sexual partner and (58%) had sex frequently. Therefore, the study recommended that the government should encourage female undergraduates with monthly stipends aimed at encouraging them to focus on their education and maintain academic stability instead of having multiple sexual partners that will distract them from reaching their goals.

The following important changes affecting Polish households’ disposable income were introduced in 2022: the personal income tax (PIT) threshold was increased and its rate lowered, the tax exempt amount was raised, the possibility of deducting health insurance contributions from PIT was abolished, and the rules for granting housing allowance were modified. The aim of the research discussed in the paper was to determine the total direct impact of the above-mentioned changes on the amount of disposable income of a single parent and an individual managing a one-person household. The research was based on the EUROMOD tax-benefit microsimulation model and the hypothetical household method. A comparison of the budget constraints of July 2021 and July 2022 shows a decrease in real disposable income among low-skilled part-time workers or those working part of the year. It was found that the changes introduced in the area of housing allowance eligibility may have negatively affected the income of individuals living in one-person households receiving wages of less than 40% of the average salary. The lack of indexation of benefits is also observed to have had a negative impact on single parents’ income.

I begin this bilingual (Bosnian-English) hybrid (scholarly-personal-fictional) essay, with my search for queer languages of my own, a fraught, complex process both due to my personal circumstances of immigration, and the larger history of suppression of queer expression in the Balkans and beyond. For the throughline of the discussion, I use the relatively recent portmanteau in English, bussy (boy+pussy for the anus), that has given birth to a wealth of Internet memes often featuring similar coinages, and my attempt to find its equivalents in several other languages. English and Bosnian will alternate, with their subcategories ranging from academic to confessional — so only those who read both will be able to understand everything. I first look at the Soviet Russian gay slang recorded by Vladimir Kozlovsky and then move to a fuller discussion of the Turkish queer jargon named Lubunca, which like its Greek counterpart Kaliardá, has a prominent corpus of Romani borrowings. Some of these words appear in an almost identical form, with the same or similar meanings, in a number of European languages that I am familiar with: Bosnian, English, French, and German. While my queerness does not happen to provide a sense of linguistic belonging, it does enable me to note a much-neglected postcolonial queer aspect of the European language map, the Romani element, which I happily write about in the essay. As for bussy and its translations, I argue that such terms – playfully confusing and reassigning holes in English and other languages, in recent and distant times – present occasions for queerer, more pleasurable and expansive imaginings of human bodies, desires, and the world around us.
