Opis:
17th century funeral sermons, a set of approximately 600 texts, structured following the antic rhetoric principles, modified in modern times, are a genre of panegyric literature, praising the deceased. Among preserved prints, sermons prepared on the occasion of funerals of the clergy constitute a large collection. Their structure, although basically convergent with the principles of laudation applicable to that type of expression, shows certain differences on the level of the degree of a realisation of its individual elements. The element which depicts the time preceding the birth of the clergyman and arguments referring to his lineage are eliminated or significantly reduced. On the other hand, emphasis is put on all aspects which show the piety of the deceased priest, his merits for the Church, relationship towards the faithful under his care. The image of the clergy presented in the sermons is poorly individualised, in fact, it could even be referred to as a stereotypical one.

Opis:
In the 17th century funeral sermons were one of the most frequent forms of public utterances. More than 600 funeral sermons were published in Poland at that time. They were issued by publishing houses scattered all over Poland, and thus each region had its representation in this output. Consequently, funeral sermons are a good source for studies into regional differences in the Polish language of the 17th century. The article deals with this problem on the example of Great Polish prints issued in 17th-century Poznań publishing houses of: the Wolrabs, Wojciech Regulus, Wojciech Młodujewicz, Wojciech Laktański, Jan Rossowski, the Printing Office of Lubrański Academy and the Printing Office of SocietatisIesu. The analysis of texts revealed that they manifest the most typical features of the general Polish of that time, but simultaneously the regional features, differential in character (as for example the inflectional suffix -ej of feminine hard-stem nouns: type głowej), as well as frequentative (as for example the exchange of i and y for e before consonants l, ł: type zrobieł). And although the discussed texts were written not only by the authors originating from Great Poland, they are characterized by common linguistic features. Thus, it must be admitted that the employees of printing firms – the editors, proof-readers, typesetters – played a significant role in the final linguistic creation of the 17th-century printed text.

17th century Polish
Pomeranian regional language
Opis:
Funeral sermons published in the 17th century in Poland constitute an impressive collection of more than 600 texts. They must have been printed by all the contemporary printers in Małopolska, Wielkopolska, Silesia, Mazowsze, Pomerania and the Eastern Borderlands. They were written by monks and priests of various denominations, some of them seasoned preachers, and some clergy without experience or talent. Fairly large numbers of these sermons have been preserved as part of the heritage of each of the printing centres. However, barely 17 funeral addresses printed in the 17th century in Danzig have survived, representing less than 3% of the total domestic output of this type of literature. With this article in mind, we have selected seven sermons written by Catholic priests and representatives of other denominations. The final research material formed the basis for deliberations on 17th century Polish, with special emphasis placed on its regional characteristics. Before that, information was gleaned on the printing circles in Gdańsk, the origins and professional education of the contemporary printers and the sermons’ authors. While we do not know many of the authors’ biographies, there are some common linguistic features in the texts that can be traced back to the Pomerania region by means of historical dialectology; for example disruptions in the distribution of the vowels i and y, de-palatalization of the sound l (pronounced lyst), de-palatalization of the sounds ḱ, ǵ (pronounced ludzky, Pomorsky), a de-palatalized ending of the instrumental case in plural nouns, adjectives and pronouns (pronounced cnotamy, wielkimy), replacing consonantal clusters Š, Ś, S and several less significant linguistic facts. A majority of the above mentioned features occur in all the texts printed in Gdańsk. However, there are sermons in which the linguistic features characteristic of Pomerania (and of the authors, or editors) are particularly frequent (e.g. the sermon by Andrzej Skata, published by Filip Chrystian Rhete).

Opis:
The book entitled Rhymes and Sermons at Burial. Funeral Matters of Radziwill Family in 17th Century is devoted to literary works related to the death of the members of the Radziwill of Birże family. The book consists of four chapters focused on the people whose death left a comparatively rich literary documentation in the form of sermons, homilies, epitaphs and testaments. One of the most interesting achievements of this research that dealt with the materials mentioned above is equalization of the status of all investigated texts: oratorical, documentary and poetic. Latin epitaphs, occasional poems, funeral sermons and homilies as well as documents such as testaments have been treated as materials of equal importance in this research. Another merit of the book is the inclusion of the texts that have remained so far in manuscripts. Although they were copied mostly as anonymous texts, Mariola Jarczykowa took the trouble to determinate the authorship of some these 17th century texts by means of the analysis of extensive correspondence related to the funerals. There is no doubt that Mrs Jarczykowa is very well prepared to deal with the subject. She has been involved in the seminar of the Committee on the Study of the Reformation in Poland and Eastern and Central Europe (the University of Warsaw, Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies „Artes Liberales”, December 18-19, 2009). She is also known as an expert in nineteenth-century editions of addresses and letters by Krzysztof Radziwiłł (1585-1640) and as a specialist in the Reformation’s “culture of the word” (manuscripts, books, poetry and the art of public speaking). She is the author of four scholarly books. Apart from the most recent publication that is being reviewed here, there are three other studies: The Book and Literature in the Circle of the Birża Radziwiłłs in the First Half of the Seventeenth Century (Katowice 1995); Reading Matter by Piotr Kochlewski. On the Literary Activity Performed by the Secretary to the Radziwills of Birże in the First Half of the 17th Century (Katowice 2006) and Kultura epistolarna w kręgu Radziwiłłów birżańskich w XVII wieku (Kielce 1998). At present, she is head of the Department of Baroque and Old Books in the Institute of Polish Literature. As far as Rhymes and Sermons at Burial is concerned, it has to be stressed that in the context of the topic of religious poetry, the two most interesting chapters of the book are the second and the third ones. The second chapter, presenting the literature about women’s death, focuses on Radziwill’s two wives: Zofia Słucka and Katarzyna Potockia. The first lady was the addresse of some Latin funeral poems, religiously-tinged, published by Salomon Rysiński and of a few poems by Daniel Naborowski, whereas the memory of Katarzyna Potocka was celebrated by Catholic priests in, among other things, one emblematic print. Latin occasional poems and epitaphs also provide the literary and sacred context of the children’s death, involving the youngest members of the family, i.e. Krzysztof Radziwill’s progeny: Mikołaj, Jerzy and Halszka. Describing the duchess the poets use Latin words such as virtus, pietas and bonitas, but in the case of the lament after the death of a child the floristic imagery is usually employed (e.g. the image of a rose cut by a sickle). Taking everything into account, it can be undoubtedly confirmed that Mariola Jarczykowa’s book Rhymes and Sermons is an interesting, informative and valuable study. Her analysis of occasional poems connected with Radziwill of Birża family brings to the reader’s notice many unknown texts and demonstrates artistic and rhetorical values of the poetry in the seventeenth century.

Opis:
In the 17th century, funeral sermons were a frequent type of public address. Over six hundred of such sermons were published in Poland at the time. They were published by presses all around Poland, so that each region is represented in the production. Consequently, funeral sermons are a good source for research in regional varieties of Polish in the 17th century. The article presents the problem on the example of printed material from Lublin, published in the press owned by Paweł Konrad, Anna Konradowa, and Jan Wieczorkowicz. The inspection of the texts has shown that they represent typical qualities of 17th-century standard Polish, as well as regional differential and frequency-based qualities. Because sermons were written not only by authors from Małopolska, it can be assumed that their language was largely influenced by editors and printers.

Opis:
The subject of the article is religiousness of the Polish nobleman in the light of the published 17th century funeral sermons. In the ideal model created by sermons this religiousness had a few aspects. The first one was offering testimony to the truth of the Catholic religion, which was connected with an inevitable attack against Protestants, especially in the first half of the 17th century. Next, the role of the ethos of the Christian knight was emphasized. Funeral preachers attached great significance, probably also under the influence of the families of the deceased, to offerings to the Church as well as to alms for the faithful. These were reasonable in the process of building the position of the nobleman's family in the local community and in the Republic. The published funeral sermons devoted relatively little space to private religiousness, in this respect focusing on the preparation for good death, according to the principles that had been worked out in the 15th century, and made popular again in the post-Trent epoch. The texts of the sermons were both occasional religious works and a medium that had an impact on the public opinion.

Opis:
The present article focuses on the attitude towards death expressed in the noblemen's funeral sermons of the 17th century, on the image of an individual's preparations for death and on understanding death as a phenomenon significant for the society to which the dead one belonged. Generally the attitude towards death in funeral sermons is a reflection of tendencies characteristic of the whole 17th century. It is contained between the motif of vanitas, the need to `familiarize' death, fear of being damned and the need to commemorate the individual who leaves the social life. The image of an individual's death in those sermons was a confirmation of the patterns contained in the 17th century art of good dying, sometimes even a perfect one. Finally, the 17th century funeral sermons showed the death of a nobleman as a loss for the nobility that requires consolidating acts of various kinds. Death was perceived – or so it seems – as a threat for the cohesion of the group. In the present article the author also tried to point out that the death of an individual was an opportunity of indoctrination of the group in the spirit of political ideology characteristic of the nobility.
