Opis:
It is known that in the last decade, a sharp decrease of students' interest and motivation for learning science was registered. Taking this fact into account, new ways for raising the students' interest and motivation should be promoted, mostly based on using digital tools in the teaching/learning process. In this sense, if we are thinking that nanoscience and nanotechnology are new areas of science which come with a lot of interesting applications in different areas, the topics related to the nanoscience and nanotechnology introduced in the science lessons - at the students' knowledge level - can lead to the effective raise of students' interest for science. Starting from those premises, Valahia University Targoviste participates as partner with other five institutions from Turkey, Bulgaria, Greece, and Italy to the LLP KA3-ICT project no. 511787-LLP-1-2010-1-TR-KA3-KA3MP: "Nano-Tech Science Education" oriented on searching the most effective ways to introduce the nanotechnology concepts in science lessons, in the secondary education. In this respect, this paper presents a study based on the data collected from different target groups of the project, with the view to identify the suitable features for setting up a specific NanoTech Virtual Lab.

Opis:
Bivalves, oysters, mussels, and clams are important constituents of riverine and estuarine ecosystems. Their shells and soft tissues provide information on the environments in which they live. Since they are filter feeders, they also are factors in improving water quality through removal of particulate matter from the water column. Finally, they are a valuable food source that has substantial economic value. Hence, characterization of shells and soft tissues is useful for improved understanding of these factors. Here, we used X-ray microprobes and computed microtomography facilities at the Brookhaven National Synchrotron Light Source to investigate elemental distributions in bivalves taken from locations around New York, Washington, DC, and New Orleans, LA. The results form the initial basis for compilation of a database of relevant parameters that can serve for tracking environmental changes and for assessing toxicity of particular metals. The work was enabled by active collaboration with students from the several regions, community groups, and research scientists. The collaboration was facilitated through use of web conferencing between Brookhaven National Laboratory and the varied locations.

Opis:
Two different, working examples of organization of econophysics graduate courses at the Faculty of Physics, University of Warsaw and the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the Wrocław University are considered. In the first example we have a system where the interdisciplinary, econophysical education begins only after three years study of physics. Within this system the M.Sc. as well as Ph.D. theses in econophysics are conducted only at the Faculty of Physics. In the second example the B.Sc. theses in econophysics are accomplished in the Department of Physics and Astronomy again after three years study but higher degrees can be prepared either in physics in the Institute of Theoretical Physics or in economy in the Institute of Economical Sciences. M.Sc. and Ph.D. theses can also be conducted. For both examples, the graduate students of econophysics are obliged to participate in traditional (typical) economical lectures and trainings which are offered them by economical departments while lectures and trainings (tutorials and/or laboratory classes) in econophysics are offered them by physics departments themselves. Thus Poland is one of a few countries, where so modern interdisciplinary knowledge is systematically offered to students.

Opis:
We measured the lattice constants of bulk aluminum nitride crystals at various temperatures by high resolution X-ray diffraction. By the use of a high temperature chamber and a X-ray cryostat a temperature regime from 20 to 1210 K was available. Furthermore, the measured data were fitted by Einstein- and Debye models which yield reliable parameters for the calculation of the thermal expansion coefficients of AlN.

Opis:
The experimental treatment of chosen material with laser beams, starting from continuous wave up to fs pulses, produces the necessity to find the common and sophisticated theoretical approaches to interaction modeling. For chosen materials, some laser treatment and damage analyses are performed. The provoked stresses and parameters of transport processes (penetration depth) are calculated by using the programs for electrical circuit analyses. Some inconsistencies in the treatment of large area laser-material interaction are discussed.
