Opis:
The paper discusses the problem of difficult conflicts, whose dynamics is characterized by intensification of factors influencing the course of a conflict, and conflicts which are considerably difficult to resolve. Among many conflicts of high intensity and escalation it is legitimate to identify a specific group of conflicts which can be viewed in a special way due to their parameters. The author of the paper suggests that they should be distinguished and regarded as a specific type of conflict called an expansive conflict. Expansive means expanding in size or scope, aiming at extension of influence or power, or in another sense: insistent and intemperate in expression of feelings, quick-tempered, effusive. Expansiveness means striving for enhancement of one’s impact, impulsiveness and effusiveness, as well as a kind of possessiveness manifested in extending one’s influence to more and more new areas. Therefore, asking about expansiveness, we pose questions: why – who – where – how strong – how fast. These are the questions about the origin, parties to the conflict, its place, force and rate of spreading. This uncomplicated model can be used to describe a conflict. The introduction of the notion of an expansive conflict can be justified and applied in practice for conflict processes of the extraordinary course, especially in relation to macro conflicts originating in the sphere of politics (superpower policy versus democratisation), economy (corporations) or culture (expansion of mass culture).

The aim of this paper is to discuss the usefulness of social conflict theory as a theoretical framework for analyzing the conflict in Northern Ireland. The social conflict theories under consideration are Lewis Coser’s functionalist theory of conflict, Ralf Dahrendorf’s theory, and Randall Collins’ sociology of conflict. The main question is whether social conflict theories provide a useful analytical tool in understanding ethnic conflicts: their nature, bases, and the actions of the social actors involved.

The object of the analysis of this paper is Qatari mediation. The role of facilitation as a tool of conflict management in Doha’s foreign policy as well as its modus operandi and the conditions for successful facilitation are the main issues examined here. In conclusion, it is revealed that mediation is only one tool of the Qatari foreign policy among many others. Moreover, the presence of the window of opportunity, the conflict parties’ inclusion and cohesion, and the acceptability of an intermediary are crucial for the successful conflict mediation. The use of reward power, the absence of the follow-up mechanism, the trained administrative staff of the foreign policy apparatus, and the war-weariness are the main obstacles for the transformations of Qatari conflict mediation into conflict resolution.

Security is understood as a certain state of confidence, the lack of threat and the awareness that the fundamental values of the state, including, among others, existence, survival and development, are preserved and represent the objective of the security policy of each government and state. The lack of these values may exert an adverse impact on its development. The activities of the competent organs of the state, creating such policy, should be purposeful and aimed at its implementation and they should also contribute to its formulation on the international arena. The security of Ukraine, as a result of actions taken by the separatist forces, was put to a great test and the annexation of Crimea slightly redefined the European security environment and resulted only in the imposition of sanctions and diplomatic pressure on Russia. Today, it is difficult to predict the scenario for future developments in Ukraine. It would seem that the chances are 50/50 that the conflict will be resolved. So, the question remains, what will Vladimir V. Putin, President of the Russian Federation, do? Will the pressure exerted by almost the entire world lead to the stabilisation of the situation in Donbass or will it result in the escalation of the conflict and the seizure of further areas, with, perhaps, Kiev included? However, the escalation of the conflict seems to be very unlikely, although it certainly would arouse nationalistic euphoria in the Russian society, as the imposed sanctions, the economic situation and losses that would be suffered by the Russians will prevent such escalation. If Putin decided to go war with Ukraine, he would have to take account of the determined opposition of the world superpowers and even greater sanctions, which the Russian economy might not be able to cope with. The paper contains the information about the genesis of the conflict in Ukraine and attempts to present the objectives of operations in the Kiev-Moscow conflict.

The Article reflects on the influence and distortion of mass media in modern days. Its original role of a bearer of truth, accurate information and its role, nowadays, used mainly to manipulate the audience to achieve a specific reaction. The overwhelming forces of media are illustrated on the examples of the American conflict with Iraq from 003 to 2010 starting with the World Trade Centre Attack and ending with the opinion of the polish audience concerning the American-Iraqi conflict. The article is divided in two parts, analyzing mass media and the foreign policy of George W. Bush over Iraq after September 11, 2001 and the role of US and Polish media in the process of citizens’ preparation for the conflict in Iraq. The first part approaches the importance of mass media for U.S. foreign policy against Iraq, created by President George W. Bush, especially after the September 11, 2001. It shows also how far society is involved in the maintaining of this policy. The article focuses on the influence of media during conflicts and how the public opinion and military actions influence one another. The second part focused on the supposed role of media to inform and prepare the people for conflicts. Instead, the society is overwhelmed with information so the risk shows, that the necessary news get partially lost. To prove this distortion a survey was made showing an accordance to the given information with different newspapers, radio and TV stations. Regarding the increasing of fear and misleading public opinion the Polish media did not react differently than the American. This process resulted in the opinion of polish society that their military forces should join the conflict in order to protect their freedom and safety.

Presented article analyzes the sources of conflict between the family role and the professional role. The article is focused on the sources of conflict between work and family. The possibility of interference between these two roles should be closely investigated and better understood. Despite that in some cases the lines between professional and family life tend to blur, both of these types of life still have different roles and requirements. The article is an investigation of attainable literature and studies regarding the subject. The empirical investigation imply that the conflict of roles starts when the time committed to the requirements of one of them makes it difficult to meet the requirements of the other. Even though lately the number of investigations of this subject has grown, the results are still differentiated and sometimes even self-contradictory. The comparison of the results of different investigators showed that the work-family and family-work conflicts are positively correlated which indicates mutual strengthening and necessity of searching for common and individual causes that condition their coexistence, domination and strength. The received results are consistent with the results of many other studies, whose authors tried to indicate that each of these conflicts could have specific causes and course.

This paper outlines selected definitions of conflict and war that have formed the basis of analysis for the attributes of cyber conflict - in particular the attributes of: nature, forms, sources, complexity, and the difficulty of uniquely identifying the "aggressor" if the attack is not "overt". Methods: Statistical analysis, document analysis. Results: The characteristics of a cyber conflict are, in particular: no certain identification of the aggressor, no possibility of an official declaration of war or official defense and retaliation. Conclusions: The key determinant of defense - should be digital and electromagnetic offensive measures. Security threats and more frequent attacks in broadly defined cyberspace have unquestionably become the challenge of today’s world - consisting of alliances, which the sum of security being the security levels of individual members and their defense capabilities. However only the level of commitment and cooperation can contribute to the achievement of a common goal, defined by the Alliance - including, above all, the elaboration of common, acceptable by all members - „modern” solutions. However, the common defense and deterrence potential equipped with real, though digital, both offensive and defensive resources would allow practical implementation of the challenge for art.

The starting point of theoretical discourse on social conflicts, including ethnic ones, usually concerns their inevitability. This is because they form a specific class of social conflicts and as such are inherent – and crucial – for all social relations. A lot of notable works on the subject include such observation. ‘Conflict, of course, is intrinsic to human society and is often an agent of reform, adaptation, and development. But conflict can also engender destructive violence’, writes Richard H. Solomon. Conflicts perform the role of both social destroyers and creators, says Johan Galtung, and stresses: ‘Conflict generates energy. The problem is how to channel that energy constructively.’

The cycle of individual and communal lives from birth to death is supposedly preserved by the government through institutions. However, political, social, and economic activities are engaged to make ends meet wherein the government is to serve as an unbiased regulator. The activities that play out in Southern Kaduna reflected politics of being on one side with interplay on origin, identity, religion, and locality. On the other hand, it reflects politics of belonging that play on kin, reciprocity, and stranger status. It has thus resulted in violence, suspicion, and persistent conflict. The study examines citizen’s inclusiveness in peacebuilding initiatives and the people’s perception of the sincerity of the government. The research relies on secondary sources where governmental and non-governmental publications and documents from relevant and reliable sources enriched the socio-historical approach, particularly those relating to contestation in the region. The study found out that just like situations in the other northwest states of the country, the crisis exacerbates by the government’s inability to mediate fairly between warring parties to ensure fairness and justice as well as failure to apprehend and punish the culprits, even as recommendations from the various interventions were unimplemented. Thus, the spate of violence continues.

The article looks at various approaches to mediation, leading to an indication of the nature and attributes of this method of solving armed conflicts. It also analyses the motives of the main actors of mediation - the parties’ of the conflict and the mediator, which are taken into consideration when they decide to start mediation. The research allows a better understanding of the complexity of mediation in an armed conflict. It enables the motives of the conflicting parties and mediator which have an impact on the mediation process and result to be identified.

Two experiments probed the role of strategies used in social conflicts on perception of agency and communion. In study 2 these findings were replicated in the context of organizational conflict, those who decided to use confrontational strategies were also perceived as more agentic, although less communal than these who used cooperative strategies. In line with the theory of power effects on objectification of social targets, the perceived agency and communion were differently linked to superior’s and subordinate’s evaluation. While perceived agency predicted the subordinate’s evaluation, perceived communion predicted superior’s evaluation, but not the other way round. Moreover, perception of communion (but not agency) mediated the negative effect of confrontational strategies on supervisor’s evaluation. On the other hand, perceived agency suppressed the effect of strategies on subordinate’s evaluation.

In two experiments we aimed to find out whether the adjustment can be carried out across two kinds of cognitive conflicts: between competing responses and requirements of two tasks. The modified version of the flanker task in switching paradigm was used so that participants had to switch between two tasks that shared the same stimulus set. The results showed that the two kinds of confl icts did not interact with each other. Furthermore, each conflict evoked conflict adaptation, but this adaptation did not occurred across conflicts. This suggests that conflict adaptation covers a set of mechanisms functioning uniquely in one domain.

The third section is devoted to the issue of brutality - the most debated topic in the Western media. I argue that an overarching misperception about the Chechen conflict was caused not only by Russian propaganda, but also by the inherent attitude prevailing in the West. This attitude should be understood in the framework of Orientalism as was explained by Edward Said.

The crop farmer-herder conflict has taken a toll on the agricultural development of Nigeria. These two major players in the Nigerian agricultural sector, constitute a threat to their livelihood strategy. As a result of these conflicts, fortunes have been lost in terms of crops and livestock. This work presents the herders’ perspective to the lingering dispute. For the purpose of the study, purposive sampling method was used to select 3 locations in the state. Furthermore, we applied snowball sampling to select 40 herder respondents from each of the three locations; consequently, a total of 120 herders were sampled for the study. Data were collected through the use of structured interview schedules. Descriptive statistics, the 5 point Likert scale and Chi square test were used for the analyses. Among the identified causes of conflict one can enumerate: crop damage by cattle (72.5%), crop farmers encroachment onto cattle routes (47.5%), inadequate grazing reserves for cattle (70.0%), lack of access to water points (64.2%), pollution of water points leading to death of livestock (47.5%), intentional bush burning (66.7%), maiming/killing of stray cattle (74.2%), and blockade of stock route by farms (80.8%). Resolution of conflict situations was found to be carried out mostly by traditional institutions, i.e. the police, local authorities, courts and cattle breeders association through legal means and payment of compensation among others. Furthermore, the herdsmen also have strategies to prevent such conflicts; these are restriction of cattle, awareness of the existence of a stock route among members and use of the stock route. Therefore, we recommend the use of traditional institutions and support of the cattle breeders association to manage such conflicts in any case.

The purpose of the article is twofold: to diagnose tourism-related conflicts occurring in Poznań by identifying their intensity and key parties, and to determine the capacity of the key stakeholders in the city’s tourism system to mitigate these disputes. Because of its complex nature, overtourism in cities is a dangerous phenomenon, which is very hard to measure. Like other social conflicts, the intensity and development of overtourism can be measured by analysing tourism-related conflicts in the urban space, using tools offered by conflict management theories, especially Christopher Moore’s Circle of Conflict model. Conflict issues identified by the author are associated with the uncontrolled consumption of the city’s overall offering, which is manifested by the behaviour of city inhabitants, visitors from the metropolitan area, and tourists. The article contributes to the literature on overtourism by proposing an alternative method of identifying the scope and intensity of overtourism in the absence of objective measures and data. The author also proposes a method of evaluating key stakeholders’ capacity for conflict management in Poznań.

Criminally relevant conduct often falls under several criminal precepts, regulating as many criminal notions as possible, and it is necessary to decide whether all, some or only one of them could be applicable. This phenomenon, termed ‘conflict’, occurs when a subject’s actions with criminal relevance are, wholly or partially, subsumed under different criminal precepts. To definitively classify the punishable act, it is then necessary to take a further step, which can be considered conclusive, and determine the precept or precepts applicable to the act. Hence, this paper analyses the meaning, content, and application of the conflict of laws and conflict of rules.

The development of events in Ukraine at the end of 2014 led to the outbreak of armed fighting in Donbas, where virtually all kinds of land forces’ arms were used, not only of Soviet or Russian production but also the latest ones and armaments that had been previously withdrawn from operation. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the armaments used during the fighting in the Donbas region, innovations in weaponry and tactics in the period from April 2014 to the middle of February 2015. The study is based on the qualitative analysis of primary source materials from photographs and video clips available in free circulation as well as information shared in online forums (particularly Russian ones) and unstructured interviews with the participants of those events. The findings of the study pertain to the kinds of Soviet and Russian land forces’ armaments in a real combat situation as well as the tactics involved in using them.

Current discussion on the consequences of modernity, and social effects of the ongoing globalization of the world, more and more frequently focus on the increasing number of signs of the world’s unification, and at the same time tendencies to divide it not necessarily according to the designated national borders, are becoming visible. Towards the end of the 20th century, factors conducive to integration of the world and communities that inhabit it, began to become more apparent. Integration complements, clubs and harmonizes particular spheres of human existence and activity. It is a process, during which the structure of integrating elements alters (they frequently undergo a forced change and adapt to each other) and the bond is subject to evolve. It is a dynamic process that creates new quality.

Opis:
In the rich and evolving research of trust there are two opposite theoretical approaches. One in the tradition of Alexis de Tocqueville (1835), Robert Putnam (1993), Francis Fukuyama (1995) and many others considers trust as a quality of interpersonal relations emerging from below, turning into shared cultural resource and producing viable democracy and prosperous economy. The causal vector is from micro to macro, from interpersonal networks to organizations, institutions and the state. This is the dominant approach. But there is also an alternative perspective which claims that trust is facilitated or even enforced by the “civilized public sphere” (Papakostas 2012), or “institutionalized skepticism” (Cleary and Stokes 2006), i.e. the rational political and economic organization, and particularly the clear, stable, transparent and consistent law universalistically and efficiently applied and executed. Here the causal vector is from the state, organizations and institutions toward interpersonal trust, from macro to micro. Both approaches should not be considered as competing but rather as complementary. They have also different but complementary implications concerning the resolution of intergroup conflicts by building trust. For example, the earlier suggests cultivating trust from below by encouraging personal contacts, mutual acquaintance, cooperation, participation in common voluntary ventures by hostile groups. The latter approach would rather emphasize the need for enforcing trustworthiness by overarching, higher-level structure of organizations, institutions and laws assuring accountability, stability, transparency of social relations, through control and surveillance of both feuding parties. It is only the parallel employment of emergence and enforcement of trust that opens the possibility of gradual resolving of intergroup conflict.

The aim of the research was to cognitively appraise a conflict and provide an emotional reflection on the significance of the situation in triggering destructive and constructive coping strategies used by adolescents in a social conflict situation. The study used the Stress Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ) by Włodarczyk and Wrześniewski, the Three-Factor Inventory of Personality States and Traits (TIPST) by Spielberger and Wrześniewski and the Questionnaire to study adolescents’ strategies of coping in a situation of social conflict (KSMK) by Borecka-Biernat. Empirical research was conducted in secondary schools and included 893 adolescents (468 girls and 425 boys) aged 13–15 years. Analysis of the research results shows that the situational appraisal of a conflict as a threat or the dispositional appraisal of a conflict as a harm/loss, as well as reacting to it with anger or fear, perceived as a temporary emotional state and as a learnt behavioural disposition, co-occurs with the tendency to react destructively to a conflict in adolescents. The research has also shown that an adolescent facing a conflict situation—but not appraising the situation dispositionally as a threat/loss and reacting to it with a learnt behavioural disposition to react with curiosity—will apply a constructive strategy to cope with the situation.

Opis:
In group decision making conflicts arise from the fact that individuals or groups of individuals have often different opinions about problems' solutions. These conflicts might have various degrees ranging from almost complete agreement to an absolute opposition of two equally strong sides. The aim of this article is to extend the evaluation of conflicts' degree introduced by Z. Pawlak and others originally in the rough set theory context. The scope of this generalization embraces an arbitrary number of groups or individuals involved in a conflict, an arbitrary number of their attitudes as well as different degrees of agreement or disagreement on an issue (fuzzy conflicts). The evaluation of a conflict degree is divided into two levels, as both conflict situation as a whole and each individual in a conflict can be evaluated. The proposed measures of conflicts' degree can be used in initial stages of decision making processes to the quantitative evaluation of conflict intensity, so they can provide useful information for a conflict potential resolution; and also, they might help to describe conflicts' dynamics. Numerical examples of the evaluation of conflics' degree are provided as well.

Interpersonal conflicts arising between children are not only difficult for children themselves, but also for teachers responsible for conducting educational and didactic activities with children. Empirical studies (based on the diagnostic survey method: interviews with children, questionnaires for teachers) conducted among one hundred preschool teachers working with six-year-olds, and among one hundred preschoolers, have revealed that a considerable percentage of the surveyed teachers underestimate the importance of children’s conflict situations in their educational activities. The teachers are mostly unaware of the developmental dimension of conflicts, and they emphasise mainly the negative impact of such situations on children (46%), often punishing their pupils – as claimed by six-year-olds – for becoming engaged in a dispute (48%). The teachers also fail, to a significant extent, to reflect upon incidents of conflict, be it reflection upon the situation in the course of action or reflection upon the action with the benefit of hindsight. Results obtained in the studies demonstrate that the teachers do not show their pupils what a constructive dispute is about, and do not teach them any ways to resolve a conflict situation in an integrative manner – in cooperation with other interaction partners. They also fail to explain the meaning of dialogue in the conflict process to children, despite claiming to do so (81%). The findings may imply that although teachers know which constructive procedures should be used in situations of conflict between children, they do not put their knowledge into practice because, e.g., they are not competent enough to do so.

Because of its relatively frequent occurrence, conflict is a specific context of the learning process. The impact of a conflict can be devastating, destructive, but also beneficial and creative in certain circumstances. Therefore, for each teacher, the occurrence of a conflict situation is always a challenge to discern its causes and the ways of ending it. Moreover, any possibilities should be used to integrate a conflict situation into the discovery of the world of values by students and the responsible standing by them. This paper is an attempt to show the phenomenon of a conflict igniting in school education and the possibilities of working it out creatively.

It is a fact that media plays an important role in post-war reconstruction enhancing the dialogue on issues related to dealing with the past and democratic institutional building. Media continues to be challenged by financial and market dynamics, political influences, and the quest for increasing market share. Over the last two decades, Kosovo has witnessed an increasing role of the media in processes of conflict transformation and institution-building. Yet the media is grounded in the dominant national frames and political ideologies. This paper discusses the dynamics of media development and the role it has played in overcoming the conflict in post-war and post-independence Kosovo. The role of media in conflicts became all important in social research, especially in the „new wars” in Rwanda, Congo and the former Yugoslavia, in the 1990s. In addition to locally generated financial means, media development has been shaped by international donors support that frames freedom of media as one of the major pillars of democracy. Research on the role of media in conflict transformation in Kosovo is still lacking. This paper seeks to address this gap offering an analysis of the role that media has played in conflict transformation and the co-creation of shared social imaginaries as a precondition for a cohesive society in Kosovo.

General assumption suggests that neoliberal policy is an efficient strategy for conflict resolution/ transformation and/ or has conflict preventive function. This theory is based on the logical expectation of peace as a necessary condition for productive economic activity, while getting as much profit as possible seems ideal in a peaceful environment. The examples of internally conflict less contemporary prosperous states practicing neoliberal approach (the US, Great Britain, modern China - through merging, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, etc.) have to be taken into consideration in this regard. However, development of neoliberalism – s. c. neoliberalization, but first of all consequences of this process apparently show different stages of conflict evolution in different regions and countries of the world directly affected by neoliberal policy. The US war in Iraq, military operations in Afghanistan, Syria, etc. can be discussed as illustrations of great economic interest of key neoliberal powers to gain maximum profit and material resources in developing countries, rich with such resources and potential, that are already successfully made as economic and/ or political/ military bases for the neoliberal superpowers, whether are targeted as such. Competition as an integral part of neoliberal system and one of the determining factors for its success can also be a counterargument to the interpretation of neoliberalism as a peaceful doctrine and practice. The complex nature especially of human relationships, for instance, in the workplace, as well as in a society at large, conflictual tensions and/or conflict escalation within socium, are of great importance while analyzing violent or peaceful essence and/ or effects of neoliberal development. In addition, much more massive social tension based on increasing inequality has to be taken into account, under neoliberalism.

The author presents the considerations on the conflict as a particular problem in a team. It is shown that conflicts are an inevitable phenomenon in the workplace. The article consists of three parts. In the first one, the author describes the definition and types of the conflict between employees. It is indicated that the meaning of the term ‘conflict’ is not clear - it depends on the scientific discipline. Conflict has its stages: beginning of the conflict (contradiction between the parties), no possibility to solve the conflict (aggressive behavior between the parties), development of the conflict (criticizing somebody for doing something) and the result of the conflict. The main types of conflicts are: internal conflict in the psyche of the person, conflict between individuals, conflict between individual and group, and finally – conflict between groups. The next part of the article deals with the causes of the conflicts between employees. The author emphasizes that it depends on different characters of people. What is more, significant are such behaviors as competition or dependence on authority. Interpersonal and intergroup relations are also the source of the conflict. At the end, the author shows the positive (functional conflict) and negative (dysfunctional conflict) consequences of the conflict between employees. In the first case, the conflict leads to the cooperation and creativity of people. In the second one, people are not concentrated on work or even they are not creative enough. Conflicts, which are not resolved for a long time, causes an escalation and transformation.

Opis:
How do we understand the armed conflict in Eastern Ukraine and what are its implications for Ukraine’s domestic politics as well as for stability in the region? The media, policymakers, and political analysts have used several competing narratives to explain the armed conflict in Eastern Ukraine. This paper examines three competing narratives of the armed conflict. The first narrative focuses on domestic causes of the conflict; the second narrative examines the role of Russia in the insurgency; and the third narrative describes the conflict as a result of Western policies and interference.

Opis:
This paper examines conflict as a literary convention in the early stage of the development of Gothic fiction on the basis of two novels: Horace Walpole’s The Castle of Otranto (1764) and Ann Radcliffe’s The Mysteries of Udolpho (1794). The starting point for the analysis is the now-classic division of the genre into male and female Gothic, proposed by Ellen Moers in Literary Women (1976), to show that the focus in Walpole’s story is on the political: on the monarchic conflict of power; whereas Radcliffe concentrates on the politics of domesticity. However, as the paper aims to show, though both stories are informed by the instability of their times – an era of wars and revolutions, when political tensions and conflicts brought to light certain aspects of social injustice – both novelists place at the centre of their interest a human being, the culprit of conflict. Underneath the layers of conflict for power, dominance and property, in both texts, whether representing male or female Gothic, lies the conflicted, often tortured individual, and it is this presentation of the human side of characters that annuls all divisions, and makes Gothic stories significant voices in their contemporary political and social debate.

For centuries, the period of war and peace was an essential stage in the development of the international order. Armed violence has been and continues to be an instrument of solving both internal and external problems. The nightmare of two world wars was an attempt to eliminate armed conflicts from the reality of international relations and the development of the idea of humanity. Over the centuries, effective legal and institutional arrangements have been sought to ensure the protection of the civilian population, which has been the subject of deliberate or accidental attacks. The current standards of international humanitarian law of armed conflicts allow for a certain degree of humanization of armed conflicts. However, there are known cases where these norms are not respected or even deliberately violated. In addition, it is left to wish that those who violate the civil protection legislation are held accountable.

The aim of this analysis is to draw conclusions from the consideration of the transformation of Polish economy from a command to a market driven one on the basis of results from innovation theory. As the starting point it is assumed that welfare is related to market economy with a considerable number of private and privatised companies. It will be further explained that these companies have to be innovative so as to be successful. The most visible innovation is related to the introduction of marketing units in companies. This, however, implies coping with two generic types of marketing conflicts. The first one is the structural marketing conflict: it results from the internal conflicting objectives. The second one is the marketing implementation problem: it results from the resistance attitudes. The model describing structural conflicts is presented in the paper. It is explained hope the model allows the use of existing computer software to support managers.

The article focuses on the hybrid conflict on the territory of Ukraine since 2013; its aim is to depict characteristic features of the hybrid war. The background of this article is the politics of Russia towards Ukraine since 1991, when this country gained its independence. In the opinion of Russians, Ukraine is a geopolitical misunderstanding, which openly violates the concept of “Russkiy Mir” (the Russian world). This means that Russia constantly aims at maintaining its sphere of influence in terms of the economy and politics in this region, as well as control over the military potential. Russia’s concerns mainly come from Ukraine’s desire to participate in some organisations, such as the EU or NATO. A real breakthrough was the Maidan Revolution and the annexation of Crimea, which resulted in the hybrid war in Ukraine.

Opis:
The aim of this research is to evaluate the emotions that generate constructive and destructive strategies for coping in social conflict situations by adolescents. Studies based on C. Spielberger’s ThreeFactor Personality States and Traits Inventory (TISCO), adapted by K. Wrześniewski, and K. Thomas’ and R. Kilmann’s Conflict Resolution Style Questionnaire (CRSQ), adapted by T. Wach (Dąbrowski 1991), were used for the empirical study done in 2014 on students from Polish gymnasium schools in Vilnius. Adolescent students (131 girls and 126 boys) ranging from age 1315 years were chosen. Base on the analysis of the study material collected, one can say that adolescents applying destructive strategies in social conflict situations, demonstrate high level of negative emotions. Adolescents who constructively steer their behaviour in a social conflict situation are characterized with a higher level of positive emotions. The data from current studies suggests that youths using cooperation strategies in social conflict situations, exhibit higher emotional tension of curiosity, as a trait. Studies conducted show that during the age of adolescence, boys deal with emotionsactivating social conflict situations better than girls, as more often they seek mutual understanding with partners rather than resolving disputable issues.

The aim of this article is to classify the armed conflict between Ukraine and Russia in light of international law. Firstly, the Russian armed activities are qualified through the lens of use of force and it is shown that Russia committed an aggression. Secondly, the Russian-Ukrainian conflict is qualified according to the law of armed conflict, not only identifying the applicable norms of law of armed conflict but examining whether atrocities have been committed and whether they are war crimes or mere crimes or acts of terror. The article posits that there is an international armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine and in addition a non-international one between Ukrainian insurgents and governmental forces. The methodology used in the article is legal analysis of documents and international law doctrine.

The aim of this paper is to explore the concept of interlocking directorates in a context of possible misuse of power, especially such as conflict of interest (COI). The paper presents some results of current research made on interlocking directorates. Next it analyzes connections between this phenomenon and COI. One of a basic assumption for this paper is that COI is generally dangerous for a processes of industrial and market development of regions like CEE and therefore all phenomena COI-related (as interlocking directorates) must be well recognized by regional social sciences. The article will refer to such issues as threats to free market rules, violation of trust and formation of industrial elite.

The goal of this study is to analyse the involvement of the EU and Russia in conflict management in the ‘shared neighbourhood’, i.e. the six East European and South Caucasus countries (Belarus, Moldova, Ukraine, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia). Due to the broad understanding of conflict management, which may relate to political, economic, ethnic and armed conflicts, this analysis will focus on managing only the latter. In the case of the discussed region, this means the conflicts in: Transnistria, Nagorno-Karabakh, Abkhazia and South Ossetia, including the August 2008 war between Georgia and Russia. The comparison of the EU and Russian armed conflict managing actions allows for determining the efficiency of soft and hard power used by these two international actors. The European Union received the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize for having contributed to the advancement of peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights. Therefore, it seems important to answer the following question: Can its experience benefit the EU in managing the post-Soviet region?

Wstęp: W opracowaniu zaprezentowano wyniki badań poświęconych wzajemnym relacjom między konfliktami praca–rodzina i rodzina–praca a wiekiem i płcią. Materiał i metody: W badaniu uczestniczyły 223 osoby (115 kobiet, 108 mężczyzn, 74 matki i 61 ojców) w wieku 21–63 lat. Wykorzystano Kwestionariusz Konflikty: Praca–Rodzina i Rodzina–Praca i ankietę socjodemograficzną. W weryfikacji hipotez zastosowano analizę korelacji i test U Manna-Whitneya. Wnioski: Płeć i wiek pozostaje w istotnej zależności z doświadczaniem konfliktu praca–rodzina i rodzina–praca. Background: This paper presents the results of the study concerning mutual relations between work–family conflict and family– work conflict in the context of age and sex. Material and Methods: The study included 223 subjects (115 women, 108 men, 74 mothers and 61 fathers), aged 21–63. The Work–Family and Family–Work Conflicts Questionnaire and socio-demographic questionnaire were used as the survey tools. To verify hypotheses the correlation analysis and the Mann-Whitney U-test were used. Results: It has been found that a stronger work–family conflict is experienced by the examined men and fathers and a stronger family–work conflict is observed among parents. The results of the statistical analysis showed that there is a significant relationship between the number of working hours per day and work–family conflict and family–work conflict. Work–family conflict among mothers is significantly correlated with the income. The family–work conflict is stronger in the middle adulthood group. Conclusions: There is a significant relationship between sex and age and work–family conflict and family–work conflict. Med Pr 2014;65(4):521–533
