Opis:
The aim of the study was to summarize the activity of the journal of the diocese of Ełk during the period 1999-2018 and to outline the development plan related to the reform (2018). The initiation of the project in the form of a scientific journal has created opportunities for the development and publishing of research results carried out by scientists mainly belonging to the diocese of Ełk. Many of them used this opportunity. Sharing the results of our own scientific research was at the same time the propagation of the journal and the environment creating it. The considerable scientific output published in the “Studia Ełckie” in a permanent way inscribed in shaping the scientific awareness of the north-eastern Poland. The presentation of the origins and development of the journal turned out to be difficult as long as there are no detailed written sources. It must be admitted that the history of this periodical, although not too long, is quite rich in various transformations. We should appreciate the effort of not only hundreds of authors and reviewers who co-created the magazine, but also those who, through their commitment and dedication, took care of its shape and development.

This article studies the development of soft skills in religious education lessons in Slovakia. At present, the educational system focuses on the acquisition of knowledge in the form of hard skills instead of developing soft skills. However, soft skills are life necessities in the 21st century. Religious education, which is currently defined as the development of religious literacy, represents a meaningful space for the personal development of pupils, and the development of soft skills, which can be beneficial for their personal and professional life. According to research among religious education teachers, we can affirm that soft skills are included in the lessons. Nevertheless, while teachers have more developed effective management and communication skills, they lack the ability to support cooperative and independent learning.

The question concerning how modern religion lesson should look like is still a current one and is often discussed by catechists. An important issue is to decide what kind of language to use in catechesis in order to reach the todayʼs youth. Therefore, in this article, there has been undertaken an attempt to present slang as a specific language which uses its own separate vocabulary and sometimes is understandable solely to a few. The language like that is being used by the todayʼs youth who wants to emphasize its independence. The religion teacher who stands in front of young people has to make a difficult decision whether to use slang to deliver important catechetical contents or not. The final question concerning the slang usage is still open for it has both its followers and opponents.

After the end of the Second World War, a rather long Soviet occupation began in Lithuania. This was a difficult period of trials for the entire Lithuanian society, and especially for the Catholic Church. Any possibility of permanent training of clergy was then forbidden. In this way, Catholic priests in Lithuania learned to act underground. The need for spiritual and intellectual improvement was not just an individual affair. During the long years of Soviet occupation, certain schools were formed to provide assistance to the priests of the persecuted Church. Such schools became secretly operating monasteries. Lithuanian priests drew courage from the personality of Pope John Paul II, as well as new ideas from underground publications and books imported from abroad, especially from Poland. Soviet atheist propaganda, which persecuted priests and wanted to turn them into people without higher education and present them as such in society, did not achieve its goals.

The aim of the study is to outline the research framework for the issue of promoting a positive image of a catechist (religion teachers). This goal, in accordance with the pastoral paradigm, will be achieved in three points. Firstly, theoretical assumptions will be presented that suggest what this image of a catechist should be like. The second element is the presentation of the results of research conducted for the purposes of this study. The third point is the presentation of conclusions. As the teaching of the Church, the results of research and the long Polish catechetical tradition show, it is necessary to be a witness to a living faith. It is also important to know the teaching material thoroughly and to be a good teacher. Contemporary challenges add communication competence, openness, sensitivity and spontaneity. The binder for all these features is caring for your own image. This necessity, however, comes not from empty vanity but from the knowledge that they will teach in the name of Jesus.

Akrasia or “moral weakness” involves acting contrary to what one normally believes to be the best or right course of action. I begin by offering a general definition of akrasia to cover all instances of the phenomenon. I then argue that there are two varieties of akrasia that fall under this general definition. The first, which I call “Greek akrasia,” involves a failure of belief at the moment of action, whereas the second, which I call “Augustinian akrasia,” involves a failure of will. The crux of the matter is whether one maintains one’s ordinary belief about the right thing to do at the moment of action and yet wills to act contrary to that belief, or whether one’s beliefs shift around such that they are obscured or misconstrued at the moment of action.

At the end of the Second World War, Lithuania was occupied by the Soviet Union for decades. The Soviet government was essentially atheistic and persecuted all religious activities. Literature was very important for religious education, but it was destroyed, and the printing of new literature was forbidden and even punishable by imprisonment or other penalties. However, enthusiasts emerged who, under such conditions, began writing, reprinting and distributing periodicals and individual publications. These books included translations mainly from Polish or German. Monks, priests, and laymen did a great deal of work in the field of self-publishing. In particular, members of the Sisters’ Congregation of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Immaculate Conception of the Poor, popularly known as the Sisters of the Poor, were involved in the distribution of such underground books. They distributed religious literature, were persecuted and persecuted, but their contribution to the development of a Catholic society was felt. After the end of the Soviet era, the nuns, and the return of individual residences to the old monastery buildings brought with them “secret” books and created a rich library worthy of research attention.

The Catholic Church is experiencing a Synod on Synodality from October 17, 2021, by decision of the Holy Father Francis. The aim of the Synod is to revive this forgotten form of life for all members of the Church and to make it the natural style of their life. The synodal walk in faith (syn - together; hodos - journey) increasingly counts on the laity and the use of their potential in bearing responsibility for the Church. The current Synod is both an invitation and a chance to learn to listen to one another, to talk about living the faith and to discern correctly what the Holy Spirit wants to remind his Church today. In the documents of the Magisterium for the synodal process there is the word parrhesia (Gr. παρρησία), the content of which is no longer obvious. “All are invited to speak with courage and parrhesia, that is, integrating freedom, truth, and charity” (Preparatory Document, 30). In this paper we will discuss the meaning of this term primarily from a biblical perspective. We note that it is a special charism of the Holy Spirit. Using specific passages from the New Testament and the Eastern liturgy as examples, the paper reveals the richness of content and the practical use of parrhesia in the synodal walk.

The article focuses on analyzing how Polish youth understand the purpose and meaning of life, taking into account the contemporary tendency to marginalize or eliminate the aspect of religion from the public sphere. The growing belief that man is the main source of progress, and that objective values and transcendent meaning are merely illusions, provides an important context for research on one’s perception of meaning in life. The research, conducted in the last quarter of 2023, employed a diagnostic survey method using the questionnaire technique. The study found justification in the field of fundamental theology, whose task is to show meaning in life to contemporary man. The uniqueness of the study lies in conducting a sociological and theological analysis among young people with faith, allowing for a better understanding of how religious aspects influence their perception of the meaning of life.

In the encyclical „Fides et ratio”, John Paul II appealed for a return to a sincere dialogue between theology and philosophy. The current article attempts to respond to the Popeʼs appeal, going a step further towards building a constructive dialogue between theology and psychology. Without minimizing the historical tensions between theology and psychology, the author turns to the interpretation of human existence, seeing in it the potential locus and kairos of these separate scientific disciplines, which meet inevitably, facing the mystery of humanity. In order to show possible ways of complementing theology and psychology, the author turns to spiritual theology and existential psychotherapy.
W encyklice „Fides et ratio” Jan Paweł II apelował o powrót do szczerego dialogu teologii z filozofią.

The article is an attempt to answer the question in what way is Virgin Mary the One who helps humans to accept the reality of death with an open mind and in such a way that makes them grow as well as brings them closer to truth and goodness. This topic seems to be especially relevant in situations in which one tries to escape the very thought of death and at the same time Marian devotion tends to be marginalized. Mary accompanies those who are experiencing their own death or whose loved ones are passing away. Just as she was present at the Golgotha under her Son’s cross, she is present at the end of the earthly life of her adopted children. She protects them from despair, anger and indifference. She helps the witnesses of faith to endure the experience of martyrdom. She encourages sinners to repent. Mary provides comfort in times of spiritual battle. She shows the path of love which retains nothing just for its own sake. She encourages people to support the dying. She invites us to discover the meaning of life and death in Christ. The author tries to reveal various dimensions of the experience of death by combining anthropological and Mariological reflection.

The article focuses on the nineteen ordinaries, suffragan bishops, and ad-ministrators of the diocese of Sejny or Augustów who governed the diocese throughout its existence. In terms of social origin, nine or ten of them came from the nobility and five from peasants; one was probably an urban resident, one of the craftspeople, and two of uncertain social origin. Geographically, ten hierarchs came from other dioceses. Nine hierarchs were born in the diocese of Sejny or Augustów. In terms of ethnic origin, we see one Armenian, one Jew, and five or six clergymen of Lithuanian origin (there are doubts regarding Bonaventūra Butkevičius). Other clergymen were Poles. Theological education of most of the hierarchs of the diocese of Sejny or Augustów was limited to graduation from a seminary. This applies to ten of them. Others studied at higher education institutions for a longer or shorter time and five of them had doctoral degrees (including two with honorary doctorates). Of the nineteen hierarchs, four bishops and all seven administrators were members of the Sejny cathedral chapter. Five bishops had ecclesiastical careers in other dioceses before becoming ordinaries of the diocese of Sejny or Augustów, three of whom were suffragan bishops of other dioceses, and one was the administrator of the Archdiocese of Warsaw. One hierarch was appointed bishop while the diocese of Wigry still existed. Two of the bishops had not risen through the hierarchy, that is, they were not members of a cathedral chapter before becoming bishops of Sejny. Most of the hierarchs of the diocese of Sejny or Augustów were of the mature age of over 50 years.

The present paper is an attempt to analyse the changes in the Good Friday oration in the light of the rubrics. This was made possible thanks to the analyses of the changes within certain categories in the liturgical books. The source material included Benedict XV’s Roman Missal, Ordo Hebdomadae Sanctae Instauratus and two typical editions of the revised Roman Missals from 1970 and 2002. The paper was divided into six parts. Firstly, the Good Friday oration was placed within the whole liturgy and its structure was presented. The next parts showed the question of the persons involved in the liturgy and their liturgical vestments. Finally, the place and manner of saying the oration were discussed. The analyses have led to the conclusion that the scope of the changes introduced in the rubrics was relatively large. While the place of the Good Friday prayer within the entire liturgy was not changed, its order was significantly modified. The categories of persons who directly participated in the prayer were changed. Another modification was related to the liturgical vestments and their colour. The places from which the Solemn Intercessions were said were clearly defined, and another way of praying the oration was added.

One of the significant issues in Pope Francis's teachings is the culture of encounter. This is the opposite of the culture of rejection which is becoming more and more common. The phenomenon of marginalization of people because of different reasons has been known to the human civilization for ages but nowadays is becomes more widespread. According to Pope Francis, the main indications and the same time causes of the throwaway culture are: fake devotion, egoism, fear, selection, indifference, treating the old as a burden, discrimination, aversion to foreigners, war, death penalty. The Holy Father lists also the countermeasures against exclusion. These are: realizing that we were all created by the same Creator, reminding of human dignity, human solidarity, devoting time to others, acceptance, opening the heart to other people's needs.

There was a post-Evangelical temple here, built in the interwar period. It was taken over by Catholics as early as 1945. The church became a branch of the parish in Nebrowo Wielkie. In 1958 the ruler of the Warmia Diocese appointed a priest. Formally, he was the vicar of the parish in Nebrowo Wielkie. The Warmia Docese was not allowed to rebuild the pastorʼs house, which was to become a presbytery. The priest lived in a private building, which was part of a farm. The priest could buy them because he had the required agricultural education. Despite the efforts of the rulers of the Warmia Diocese and the faithful, the state authorities did not agree to the erection of a parish in Sadlinki until 1973. After its establishment, the current chaplain did not obtain the approval of these authorities to take the office of the parish priest. The obstacles only ceased in 1982, with the change of the chaplain.

The work of a religion teacher involves constant contact with the students, parents, principals, other teachers, local parish priests and other ecclesiastics; this exposure increasingly often proves to be stress-inducing. It can also engender a sense of physical and mental fatigue. Therefore, teachers of religion constitute a professional group at high risk of professional burnout. The analysis undertaken in this paper aims to demonstrate how selected groups of religion teachers approach various aspects of professional burnout. The respondents involved in the study included teachers of religion from the Archdiocese of Warmia and the Diocese of Opole. The investigations relied on the diagnostic survey methodology, using the pertinent survey technique. An authorial questionnaire served as the principal tool of research. The respondents correctly identify different aspects of professional burnout. The opinions of the surveyed religion teachers are consistent with the findings of psychologists and educational experts. Respondents not only aptly define professional burnout, but also report the diverse determining factors behind it. Among other things, the latter include long-term stress related to teaching and behavioural support duties, poor cooperation between parents and religion teachers as well as a lack of commitment to religious instruction on the part of the students. Respondents are able to enumerate readily noticeable physical and psychological symptoms, as well as suggest preventive measures.

The Constitution of the Republic of Poland of 1997 formulated the principle of religious, ideological and philosophical impartiality of public authorities, which, apart from the principle of equal rights for churches and other religious associations, determines the Polish model of state-church relations. Impartiality in matters of religious, ideological and philosophical beliefs concerns public authorities, not the state as the political structure of the nation. Public authorities in the Republic of Poland, both individual and collective, are created by persons with specific religious, ideological and philosophical beliefs. Therefore, taking into account the respect for the freedom of conscience and religion of persons performing the functions of authorities, as well as the principle of impartiality of public authorities, the formula of open neutrality should be preserved in a democratic state of law, according to which public authorities are obliged to equal treatment of all people, regardless of their beliefs, on the other hand, they refrain from accepting the principles of one religion, worldview or philosophy, also those of an atheistic or agnostic nature. It should be emphasized that, contrary to the demands of various groups to remove the cross from public space, its presence is not a contradiction or a violation of the constitutional principle of impartiality of public authorities in matters of religious beliefs.

The article discusses the figure of a journalist presented in the contemporary drama scripts. The author analyzes how consistent journalists are, if they observe professional ethical standards and if they treat their profession as a calling and mission or only a way of making a living. The analysis of three dramas – Witaj Barabaszu by Jarosław Jakubowski, Powrót do Reims by Beniamin Bukowski and Wolny strzelec by Ishbel Szatrawska – suggests that the journalists featuring in the dramas treat their profession as a way of creating reality, manipulating facts along with their reception, taking advantage of guests and informers to present a subjective account of events. When preparing the materials, they fail to maintain integrity, especially the principle of being unbiased and objective. The descriptions of the journalists indicate a loss of public confidence in media-related professions. Many current journalists have ceased to be thoughtful professionals and turned into being entertainment providers, manipulators or celebrities. The theater seems to hyperbolize this situation to put the problem in the spotlight and encourage a public debate.

Drawing on John Paul II’s encyclical Fides et ratio, this paper answers the question of why Christian Revelation provides a vital link between faith and reason. It approaches the problem from the perspective of personalism. In order to capture the essence of the relationship of Christian Revelation to faith and reason, the paper addresses the following issues: why a human person is a mystery to himself, why Christian Revelation corresponds to a human person’s mystery, and what identity is given to faith and reason by Christian Revelation.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the personal maturity significance for the relation between the daughter-in-law and the parents-in-law. The analysis allows us to show what criteria a good daughter-in-law should fulfill. The author applies the analytic-synthetic method to analyze the available literature. The work resolves to investigate the relations between the children-in-law and the parents-in-law as these relations are essential for the intergenerational family’s functioning. As a framework for the research, the author uses the Zdzisław Chlewiński’s personal maturity theory (1991), which emphasizes the significance of constant self-improvement. Chlewiński specifies three criteria for personal maturity: having a personal attitude towards the other man, autonomy, and an insight into oneself. Research results: the more the daughter-in-law is characterized by her personal attitudes towards other people, her own autonomy, and her good insight into herself, the better and more mature she will be, and the more she will contribute to the good relations within an intergenerational family.

Opis:
In 1898, a questionnaire was sent the parish clergy on behalf of Antanas Baranauskas, Bishop of Sejny, in which, among other things, they were asked about the local languages used in church practice. An analysis of the clergy’s answers shows that at the end of the nineteenth century, there were not many potential parishes in the diocese of Sejny or Augustów where conflicts over the use of languages in the additional services could arise. The Lithuanian language was well established in most Lithuanian parishes or in those with few Polish believers. The most important source for studying the causes and development of linguistic conflicts in parishes is the parishioners’ petitions written to their spiritual superiors and to the civil authorities. These petitions include demands of each side, explain the situation, and ask for a change in the situation with regard to one language or the other. In the appeals written by the Lithuanian believers, the justification of the introduction of the Lithuanian language in additional services was that the majority of the believers in the parish were of Lithuanian nationality and that most of the parishioners did not understand Polish. The reason given by the Polish believers in their petitions was the tradition, i.e., that the Polish language had been around for a long time or that their ancestors built a particular church. The reactions of the hierarchs of the diocese of Sejny or Augustów to linguistic conflicts in the parishes depended on the number of believers of one nationality or the other in a parish. This was to maintain the principle of fairness, so that neither side would be disadvantaged. In the parishes discussed, the majority of the believers were Lithuanian parishioners, and this was taken into account in determining the proportions of sermons, hymn-singing, and other liturgical rites. The use of Polish in additional services was thus given its proper place.

Death is inscribed in the physical nature of man and arouses in him a lot of uncertainty, fear and sadness. Although the inevitable death is still difficult to explain, especially when it concerns children who have not been able to reach maturity much. St. Gregory of Nyssa devoted a lot of space in his writings to its understanding and the preparation of the faithful for its reception. For man is a corporeal and spiritual being, created by almighty God in his image and likeness. The material body has been animated by the immortal soul. For man combines elements of material and non-material reality. Death is the moment when the two elements separate. Concerned about the fate of man, God sent his Only-begotten Son into the world, who, taking human nature, accomplished the work of salvation in it, dying on the cross and rising, which was a great victory over death. The resurrection of Christ became not only a demonstration of God's omnipotence, but a foreshadowing of the resurrection of all people, because in it human nature regained its original state, which people lost due to the sin of their first parents. St. Gregory of Nyssa, emphasizing the effects of the work of redemption, points out that a person should not fear death, because he can prepare for its encounter by practicing a virtuous life on earth. For man's goal is to see God, and he can achieve them by keeping the commandments and following the attitude of the incarnate Son of God, which reveals to mankind what is necessary in God's eyes to participate in the glory of the Kingdom of Heaven.

More and more we realize that the issue of health does not concern only a single human being or medical staff but also countries, societies and the Church, which was made clear by the COVID-19 pandemic. This article shows whether and to which degree is the Catholic Church actively engaged in the promotion of health and prophylaxis of diseases? Or does it only watch the sick offering them just spiritual support? It is worth researching this issue on the basis of selected works from the health sciences and Polish theological literature after the Second Vatican Council.

The translation of the Book of Ecclesiastes by Marcin Bielski was published in 1554 as the second Polish translation of this Old Testament book published in print. It is undoubtedly an independent work, and its author reached beyond any doubt for the Hebrew text. It cannot be ruled out, however, that Bielski confronted his translation with the Vulgate. In his work he introduced minor modifications and reduced the content of some verses. He probably did it in order to adapt his translation to the Polish reader. Bielski limited the rhetoric of his translation, which was reflected in the reductions and elimination of even a characteristic hebel. At the same time, he tried to give his translation the most careful form, taking care of its stylistic correctness and aesthetics. Further research on this document will surely make it possible to read its translation and literary value more thoroughly, which will allow for a more complete understanding of the sixteenth-century translations of biblical books in Poland.

Opis:
Conflict situations unfolded mostly in the so-called mixed parishes inhabited by parishioners of Lithuanian and Polish. The article discusses different situations in two parishes of the Samogitian (Telšiai) Diocese. In one of them, Zarasai parish, it was the Lithuanian parishioners who demanded their rights, while in the other, Čekiškė parish, it was the Polish believers. In Zarasai parish, the Polish believers conflicted mainly about the time scheduled for the sermons in Lithuanian or Polish. At the bishop’s instruction, the time for the Lithuanian sermon was set before the Holy Mass, because the Lithuanian-speaking parishioners lived mainly in the villages outside the town and usually it took them long to travel to the church. Meanwhile, the Polish sermon was preached after the mass, because the Polish-speaking parishioners were townspeople, and the church was closer to them. The main tool in the struggle of the Polish parishioners was the singing of hymns when the Lithuanian sermon was preached, thus attempting to disrupt it. The Poles were dissatisfied with the parish priest Rev. Juozapas Liasauskis for following the bishop’s instruction to the letter and wanted him to be removed from Zarasai parish. Yet the conflict in Zarasai parish did not escalate to acrimony or bloodshed in the church. Until 1909, the language of the additional services and sermons in the parish of Čekiškė was Lithuanian. However, the Polish-speaking parishioners, mostly the nobles, thought that a sermon in Polish should be preached in their parish church. The most important criterion for introducing Polish sermons was statistical, that is, the number of parishioners who wanted sermons in Polish. A survey of parishioners was carried out, during which they were asked in which language the sermons should be delivered. In this survey, 986 people signed up as Polish and over 3000 as Lithuanian. In view of this, Bishop Gasparas Cirtautas introduced sermons and hymns in Polish on every fourth Sunday and on feasts in the parish of Čekiškė.

The purpose of this study is to show the martyrdom of rev. Stanisław Streich, murdered on February 27, 1938 in the church of st. Jana Bosko in Luboń in the context of the trial of the murderer – Wawrzyniec Nowak. The fact of a crime committed by a communist against a Catholic priest was widely echoed throughout the pre-war Polish Republic. The press of that time, broadly commenting on the murder, but above all on the stages of individual court hearings, became an extremely valuable source of information. Press articles supported by the memories of eyewitnesses of the murder of the priest, from the very beginning gave a clear message about the martyrdom of the parish priest from Luboń, which, despite many difficulties related to the positioning of post-war Poland in the communist bloc, was in a straight line to start the cause of beatification. The research process in the article was carried out using the analytical-synthetic method, which made it possible to compile and summarize the studied material as a whole and to research the sources in terms of the selected issue included in the topic of the work, draw conclusions and answer the questions posed.

The longest liturgical period of the year, the Ordinary Time, has many theological aspects to it. One of these is the eschatology of the liturgy. During the Ordinary Time the Church unites the faithful in the celebration of the Eucharist, which in its euchological texts repeatedly emphasises the truth about eternal life. In this paper prayers with an eschatological aspect and those with a sacrificial character have been singled out and analysed. The content of selected orations has been divided into: the dignity of participation, the attitude of service, the gifts offered and the use of grace from the Eucharist. The content is intended to draw attention to the holistic preparation of each believer for the truth about eternal life and to encourage the discovery of the desire to realize this reality in everyday life through participation in the liturgy.

The article is a study devoted to the implementation of the formation prin-ciples at the Theological Seminary in Ełk in the years 2012-2022. The first part presents the personal structure of the Seminar. Based on the cited data, it turned out that the most variable element of the seminar structure is the decreasing number of alumni. The team of formators and the group of lecturers, which also underwent modifications, constituted a relatively stable construct. The second part deals with the means and ways of implementing the formation principles in force at the Higher Theological Seminary in Ełk. These principles were included in the formation document for the seminaries of the Church in Poland (1999). Each of the four dimensions of formation (human, spiritual, intellectual, pastoral) was governed by its own rules. Based on the study, it should be said that to a greater or lesser extent all of them were taken into account in the process of shaping vocations in the Ełk Seminary. The basic ways and means of their implementation are included in the Regulations and the Statute of the seminar. In addition, their shape was determined by the experience from previous years of the Seminarʼs operation, guidelines and proposals of teams responsible for formation associating rectors, spiritual fathers or prefects, the specificity of the events experienced and the conditions of the local Church.

Opis:
This article defends the thesis that, according to St. Thomas Aquinas, when the Ancient Greeks and other Mediterranean cultures prior to them had first started to philosophize, engage in science, they had done so as parts of an individual and community team enterprise. They were convinced that all human beings have a moral duty as rational animals to philosophize—prudentially to wonder about the most universal causes about everything. Considering themselves essentially to be a ‘world-community of prudential wonderers’, they first conceived of philosophy, science, to be a psychological act of prudential wondering practiced by a world-wide community of people. In starting this organization, this world community shared a common, prudent chief aim: to help free the entire known-world from the damaging effects they had commonly recognized brute-animal ignorance causes. They were convinced that an imprudent people can never become philosophical or scientific. St. Thomas maintains that their natural desire to satisfy their wonder about the chief subject, aim, efficient and final cause of the existence, behavior, and truth of everything must have included understanding God. Having this included as part of its chief subject and aim caused them to understand the job of every philosopher chiefly to be what philosophy is for anyone who understands its proper nature: to bring into existence First Philosophy, Metaphysics’—‘the most divine and honorable science’!

Opis:
The diary notes of cardinal S. Wyszynski, currently published in the multi-volume series “Pro Memoria”, are an extremely valuable historical source of the history of the Church in the second half of the 20th century. One of the great events that was described in the Primateʼs notes is the Second Vatican Council. This study is an analysis of these texts. It covers the four main dimensions of Cardinalʼs conciliar activity. S. Wyszynski during the first session of the Second Vatican Council (1962): participation in the general sessions, the work in the Commission for Extraordinary Affairs, directing the work of the Polish Council Fathers, audiences with John XXIII. The Primateʼs notes show his concern for the security of the Church in Poland (avoiding sensitive matters for the communist authorities), commitment to the vocation of lay Catholics to participate in the conciliar deliberations and the support he could enjoy from the Pope John XXIII.

Opis:
The article addresses the issue of synodality in three dimensions. First, it discusses synodality in the light of can. 212 § 3 of the Code of Canon Law. Secondly, it addresses the issue of obligatory disclosure of oneʼs opinions arising from the above-mentioned canon. This is an attempt to answer the question whether participation in the synodal process may oblige a faithful to manifest his or her opinions concerning the good of the Church, and if so, on what basis. Thirdly, the article expands the question about the existence of legal grounds for the obligation to manifest oneʼs opinions in the canons regarding the existing councils of a particular Church. This extension of the analysis is justified by the principle that synodality does not require the creation of new structures. This leads to the final conclusion that existing canons already contain provisions regulating speaking in the synodal process.
W artykule poruszono problematykę synodalności w trzech wymiarach. W pierwszej artykuł omawia synodalność w świetle kan. 212 § 3 Kodeksu Prawa Kanonicznego.

Opis:
As a scientific discipline closely tied to human life, theology requires a continual reassessment of its mission in the contemporary world. Among its fundamental tasks is the consideration of the ongoing intersection, partial interpenetration, conditioning, and complementarity of faith and reason. This approach aligns with the Churchʼs teaching, which emphasizes the scientific status of theology. This article seeks to demonstrate that at the core of sound theological research is a proper understanding of the relationship between reason and faith. Reference was made primarily to John Paul IIʼs encyclical Fides et ratio. Based on a reinterpretation of this document, an attempt was made to show the mission of theology in the modern world. Reference to the documents of the Church, the teaching of the popes and the literature on the subject were also considered important. Emphasis is placed on interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary research. Significant attention is devoted to the pursuit of Truth. In this context, issues about theological anthropology, which plays a crucial role in various aspects of social life (e.g., evangelization, education, upbringing, catechesis, media, politics), are analyzed. Contextual studies that consider the lives of individuals, social groups, and Christian communities are also deemed important. Furthermore, the challenges posed by theologyʼs presence in the realm of new information and communication technologies are highlighted. In light of these challenges, there is a recognized need to integrate research endeavors with the theologianʼs relationship with God and involvement in the Church community.

Article devoted to symposiums in honor of St. Thomas Aquinas at the Theological Seminary in Ełk, which were organized in 2013-2023, aims to demonstrate whether and to what extent the postulates (six in number) formulated by the organizers were implemented. The text contains the programs of all ten symposiums. On their basis, data regarding the presented topics, speakers, scientific communities, dates and organizers were compiled. Based on the collected data, conclusions were formulated regarding each of the assumptions. It turned out that all of them were implemented. Some of them to a greater extent than others. The assumption regarding the celebration of Thomas Aquinas Day has been largely implemented, as has the assumption regarding the teaching mission of the Church and the implementation of the postulates contained in the formation documents. The assumption of revitalizing and integrating the scientific community at the WSD in Ełk, as well as the idea of promoting it, was achieved to a small extent.

The article is devoted to the objective and subjective conditions of religious faith. In Light of two encyclicals on faith: “Fides et ratio” by John Paul II and “Lumen fidei” by Francis, it talks about the subject and the act of faith. Both popes point to the truth (Godʼs revelation), which is the object of faith. John Paul II focuses on truth in the context of human knowledge, while Francis emphasizes the aspect of love of truth. The act of faith mainly concerns the role of reason in faith. Moreover, the benefits of the cooperation of reason and faith were indicated.

Opis:
The article compares the views of Joseph Ratzinger and Steve Stewart-Williams regarding understanding the meaning of life and the meaning of the universe. The first of them represents the position of Catholic theology, and the second of evolutionism. Both thinkers agree on the scientific basis of the theory of evolution. However, when it comes to meaning, they differ significantly. Stewart-Williams starts from materialism and naturalism, while Ratzinger takes Godʼs creative plan as his starting point. The first of them perceives man as the only creator of meaning for himself and the universe. Ratzinger introduces transcendence to the theory of evolution, which expands the field of perception and generates a much deeper understanding of the objective meaning of life and the universe.
W artykule porównano poglądy Josepha Ratzingera i Steveʼa Stewarta-Williamsa dotyczące rozumienia sensu życia i sensu wszechświata. Pierwszy z nich reprezentuje stanowisko teologii katolickiej, a drugi ewolucjonizmu.
