Opis:
In this study we determined Vi bacteriophage III sensitivity to native cisplatin, γ radiation (60Co) or to irradiated cisplatin, and checked the possibility of enhanced Vi bacteriophage III inactivation under combined exposure to cisplatin and γ radiation. We used highly purified phage suspensions in 0.9% NaCl solution or phosphate-buffered saline. Phage suspensions were titrated using a double agar layer method. Our study implies that survival of Vi bacteriophage III shows an exponential inverse correlation with cisplatin concentration in the incubation medium and the time of phage incubation in the presence of cisplatin. The use of irradiated cisplatin reduces phage survival in comparison with suspensions containing non-irradiated cisplatin. Irradiation of phage suspension with cisplatin causes a significant increase of phage inactivation in comparison with either treatment alone. Our results suggest that presence of cisplatin in irradiated medium enhances the radiobiological effect on Vi bacteriophages III.

Effect of processing under high hydrostatic pressure (= 1.1 GPa), applied at 1270 K, on Czochralski grown silicon with interstitial oxygen content $(c_O)$ up to $1.1×10^{18} cm^{-3}$, admixed with N or Ge (Si-N, c_N ≤ $1.2×10^{15} cm^{-3}$, or Si-Ge, $c_{Ge} ≈ 7×10^{17} cm^{-3}$, respectively), pre-annealed at up to 1400 K and next irradiated withγ-rays (dose, D up to 2530 Mrad, at energy E = 1.2 MeV), was investigated by high resolution X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and synchrotron topography. Processing of γ-irradiated Si-N and Si-Ge under high pressure leads to stimulated precipitation of oxygen at the nucleation sites created by irradiation. It means that radiation history of Si-N and Si-Ge can be revealed by appropriate high temperature-high pressure processing.

Opis:
In calcite and aragonite, γ-irradiated at 77 K, several paramagnetic centers were generated and detected by EPR spectroscopy; in calcite, CO3 – (orthorhombic symmetry, bulk and bonded to surface), CO3 3–, NO3 2–, O3 –, and in aragonite CO2 – (isotropic and orthorhombic symmetry) depending on the type of calcium carbonate used. For calcium carbonates enriched with 13C more detailed information about the formed radicals was possible to be obtained. In both natural (white coral) and synthetic aragonite the same radicals were identifi ed with main differences in the properties of CO2 – radicals. An application of Q-band EPR allowed to avoid the signals overlap giving the characteristics of radical anisotropy.

Opis:
Standard ocular tumor treatment includes brachytherapy, as well as proton therapy, particularly for large melanoma tumors. However, the effects of different radiation types on the metastatic spread is not clear. We aimed at comparing ruthenium (106Ru, emitting β electrons) and iodine (125I, γ-radiation) brachytherapy and proton beam therapy of melanoma implanted into the hamster eye on development of spontaneous lung metastases. Tumors of Bomirski Hamster Melanoma (BHM) implanted into the anterior chamber of the hamster eye grew aggressively and completely filled the anterior chamber within 8-10 days. Metastases, mainly in the lung, were found in 100% of untreated animals 30 days after enucleation. Tumors were irradiated at a dose of 3-10 Gy with a 106Ru plaque and at a dose of 6-14 Gy using a 125I plaque. The protons were accelerated using the AIC-144 isochronous cyclotron operating at 60 MeV. BHM tumors located in the anterior chamber of the eye were irradiated with 10 Gy, for the depth of 3.88 mm. All radiation types caused inhibition of tumor growth by about 10 days. An increase in the number of metastases was observed for 3 Gy of β-irradiation, whereas at 10 Gy an inhibition of metastasis was found. γ-radiation reduced the metastatic mass at all applied doses, and proton beam therapy at 10 Gy also inhibited the metastastic spread. These results are discussed in the context of recent clinical and molecular data on radiation effects on metastasis.

Opis:
ESR measurements at room temperature have been performed on fossil bones of cave bear (from Magurska Cave of the Tatra Mountains) and mammoth (from Dniestr River). Various paramagnetic centres related to defects in hydroxyapatite were identified. The ESR spectrum is dominated by Mn$\text{}^{2+}$ lines and free radical centres CO$\text{}_{2}^{-}$ and CO$\text{}_{3}^{-}$. Suitability of various EPR lines for the dating was evaluated. The spectra are affected by γ-ray and UV irradiation which produce new relatively unstable (transient) radical centres. From their decay curves we determined the delay period (waiting time) between irradiation and ESR dating measurements. For γ-rays the period is about 15 days and depends on the chosen ESR line. UV generates mainly surface O$\text{}^{-}$ centres which decay practically after a few days. The ESR dating of the bear bones using an additive dose method given the age t = 21.7 kiloyears (ky), whereas from radionuclide Th/U method t= 34 ky and from radiocarbon $\text{}^{14}$C method t > 33.1 ky.

Quantitative description of the effect of γ-irradiation of PE and PMMA on positronium formation on the trapped electrons at low temperatures is suggested. The consideration shows that, at least in these substances, the number of the trapping centers is probably enough to localize all ortho-positronium, and therefore the intensity of the long-lived positronium component is dependent mostly on the probability of Ps formation but not on the number of the trapping centers.
