    Examinations were carried out in Białowieska Forest, Borecka Forest, Lower Silesian Forest, woods in Olsztyn District, Słowiński National Park, and in experimental hunting areas of the Forest Research Institute in Iława and of the Warsaw Agricultural University in Rogów. Samples of the skin from the ear and nose were taken from 136 shot roe deers. Skin samples were cut into 1-2 mm pieces, incubated in a physiological solution in 25°C for 24 hours and examined for the presence of microfilariae. Microfilariae of Dipetalonema rugosicauda were found in roe deers in all examined hunting grounds. Prevalence of invasion oscillated from 6,6% to 57,1 %. The wide dispersion of D. rugosicauda in Poland is caused by common occurrence in our country of the intermediate host and vector of this nematode - tick Ixodes ricinus.

    „Wojny dorszowe” to ciąg konfrontacji, które rozegrały się w latach 1958–1976 między Wielką Brytanią a Islandią, dotyczących praw do połowów na północnym Atlantyku. Długotrwały spór zakończył się w 1976 roku, kiedy Wielka Brytania uznała 200-miliową islandzką Wyłączną Strefę Ekonomiczną. Dzięki zwiększeniu zdolności połowowych, co dokonało się w drugiej połowie XIX wieku za sprawą trawlerów parowych, wody wokół Islandii zyskały nowe znaczenie. W 1893 roku Dania, która sprawowała kontrolę nad Islandią i Wyspami Owczymi, próbowała ustanowić strefę połowową wokół ich wybrzeży. Wielka Brytania ostatecznie zaakceptowała prawa duńskie tylko na wodach terytorialnych, które miały jedynie 3 mile morskie szerokości. W 1952 roku Republika Islandii ustanowiła morze terytorialne o szerokości 4 mil, a w 1958 roku próbowała rozszerzyć je do 12 mil. Wywołało to konflikt zwany „pierwszą wojną dorszową”. Trwał on od 12 listopada 1958 roku do 11 marca 1961 roku. Rozegrało się wówczas wiele incydentów między rybakami brytyjskimi a islandzką Strażą Wybrzeża. Osiągnięty w 1961 roku kompromis zakładał, że rozbieżności między Islandią a Wielką Brytanią dotyczące kwestii połowowych zostaną rozpatrzone przez Międzynarodowy Trybunał Sprawiedliwości w Hadze. „Druga wojna dorsza” między Zjednoczonym Królestwem a Islandią trwała od września 1972 roku do listopada 1973 roku. Powodem było utworzenie przez Islandię 50-milowej strefy rybołówstwa. Po miesiącach napięć międzynarodowych i wielu incydentach Wielka Brytania zaakceptowała decyzję islandzką w zamian za zezwolenie na połów 150 000 ton ryb do 1975 roku. „Trzecia wojna dorszowa” trwała od listopada 1975 roku do czerwca 1976 roku. Do wybuchu konfliktu doszło, gdy Islandia zadeklarowała utworzenie Wyłącznej Strefy Ekonomicznej o szerokości 200 mil morskich. Konfrontację zakończyło porozumienie, na mocy którego Zjednoczone Królestwo zmuszone było zaakceptować pretensje islandzkie, otrzymując czasowy limit połowowy dla swojej floty rybackiej. Podczas „wojen dorszowych” Islandia osiągnęła zakładane cele i obroniła swą suwerenność państwową nad obszarami morskimi.
    The Cod Wars were a series of confrontations in the 1950s and 1970s between the United Kingdom and Iceland regarding fishing rights North Atlantic. The conflict ended in 1976, when the United Kingdom accepted a 200 nautical-mile Icelandic exclusive zone. With increases in fishing ability enabled by steam trawlers in the latter part of the 19th century, pressure was exerted on boat owners and skippers to exploit new grounds. Large catches in Icelandic waters meant voyages across the North Atlantic became more regular. In 1893 Denmark, which had governed Iceland and the Faroe Islands tried to establish a fishing limit zone around their shores. United Kingdom finally accepted the Danish rights only in the territorial waters which had been only 3 nautical miles wide. In 1952 independent Republic of Island established 4 mile wide territorial water and in 1958 tried to widen them to 12 miles. It caused the conflict called “the first cod war”. It lasted from 1 September until 12 November 1958 to 11 March 1961. Many incidents followed, such as the one on 4 September, when the Icelandic patrol vessel Aegir attempted to take a British trawler, but was thwarted when frigate Russell intervened, and the two vessels collided. Eventually Britain and Iceland came to a settlement, which stipulated that any future disagreement between Iceland and Britain in the matter of fishery zones would be sent to the International Court of Justice in the Hague. In total the 37 Royal Navy ships and 7 000 sailors protecting the fishing fleet from six Icelandic gunboats and their 120 crew members. The Second Cod War between the United Kingdom and Iceland lasted from September 1972 until the signing of a temporary agreement in November 1973. The reason was creating by Iceland 50 nautical-mile exclusive fishery zone. Finally, after the months of international tense as well as many incidents and collision the agreement was reached. According the document the UK accepted the Icelandic annexation in exchange for permission to catch 150 000 tons of fish until 1975. The Third Cod War lasted from November 1975 until June 1976. The conflict occurred when Iceland had declared that the ocean up to 200 nautical miles from its coast. The British government did not accept the large increase to the exclusion zone. The confrontation, which was the most hard fought of the Cod Wars, saw British fishing trawlers have their nets cut by the Icelandic Coast Guard and there were several incidents of ramming by Icelandic ships and British trawlers, frigates and tugboats. Finally the agreement was reached where the UK had accepted the Icelandic expansion while receiving a temporary allowable catch for its fishing fleet. During the Cod Wars Iceland achieved its overall aims, to the detriment of the already declining British fisheries, severely affecting the economies of northern fishing ports in the United Kingdom.

    Opis:
    The aim of the study was to determine the abundance of winter food of cervids and the capacity of the Game Breeding Centre 'Krystyna' administered by the Kluczbork Forest District (southern Poland). Research was based on the estimation of shoots available for cervids in winter time. Evaluation of annual increment of biomass was calculated on 160 circular plots, on which occurrence of trees and shrubs species was estimated (tab. 1). We assumed that the cervids cause 20% loss of growth of shoots for forest species and 90% for other species. Among the 4296 examined trees or shrubs we identified 15 deciduous and 4 coniferous species (tab. 2). The estimation of the potential food for cervids showed a significant variation depending on the species. Among the conifers, the largest total weight of shoots was observed for spruce and pine, while among the deciduous species, the largest reserves of shoots were noted for hornbeam, birch, beech and mountain ash (fig. 2). The so called secure resources amounts to approximately 8 t/1000 ha, which accounted for 35% of the total stock of shoots up to 2 m above the ground. The most food was offered by spruce and pine (over 2.5 t/1000 ha), and hornbeam, mountain ash, black cherry, birch, beech and alder buckthorn (fig. 4). Based on the calculated mass of the shoots possible to eat by deer without threat of the economic damage, we calculated capacity of the forest hunting grounds using two variants of the winter (short and long), and three variants of share the shoots in the diet. The obtained capacity amounted to on average from 120 to 144 deer/1000 ha during short winter or from 103 to 123 deer during the long winter. These results point to the urgent need to objectify the existing rules for determining allowable density of deer at the local level.

    Przedstawiono wyniki badań dotyczących akumulacji metali ciężkich: Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd i Pb przez elementy bioty: glony Spirogyra sp., moczarkę kanadyjską (Elodea canadensis Michx.) i rzęsę drobną (Lemna minor L.), zasiedlające wody Łowiska Leśnego w Pokrzywnej, w województwie opolskim (PL). Wyniki porównano ze stężeniami badanych analitów w wodach jeziora. Stwierdzono, że pod względem zdolności do bioakumulacji metali ciężkich badane rośliny wodne można uszeregować w kolejności: Spirogyra sp. ~ Elodea canadensis Michx. > Lemna minor L. Wyznaczone współczynniki bioakumulacji (BCF), będące porównaniem stężeń analitów w roślinie i w wodzie, w której wegetują, wskazują na bardzo dobre właściwości akumulacyjne badanych roślin.
    The results of uwestigations concerning accumulation of heavy metals: Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb in biota components: algae Spirogyra sp., Elodea canadensis Michy., and Lemna minor L. were shown. The samples of plants investigated were taken from waters of Forest Fishery lake in Pokrzywna, in Opole province (PL). The results were compared with concentrations of analytes determined in waters of the lake. It was found that ability of heavy metals bioaccumulation in aquatic plants can be arranged in the order: Spirogyra sp. ~ Elodea canadensis Michx. > Lemna minor L. Yalues of the calculated bioaccumulation factors (BCF), which shows ratio of analytes concentrations in plant and in water, show very good accumulation abłlities of the plants' studied.

    Opis:
    The results of the inventory of damage caused by roe deer in a 2−year−old apple orchard in central Poland permitted to evaluate the browsing intensity as well as the relationship between biometric characteristics of trees and browsing intensity. The research showed that damage caused by the roe deer was mainly caused by shoot browsing, then rubbing the velvet antlers against trees and bark stripping. In one winter, roe deer damaged 35% of the orchard by browsing even up to 100% shoots on an individual tree. Significant differences were found between the intensity of browsing the different varieties of apple trees. The largest damage was noted in the case of the Ligol variety (35% of shoots on average), while the smallest – for the Idared and Golden Delicious varieties (approximately 5% of shoots on average). Branching and tree height were not found to affect the level of damage. When establishing forest hunting grounds, the Ligol variety, eagerly browsed by roe deer, should be planted on browsing plots, while Idared and Golden Delicious varieties – in orchards designed for fruiting.
