Opis:
Municipal solid waste (MSW) compost supplied from the Istanbul Solid Waste Recycling and Composting Facility was used to amend soil samples collected within the boundaries of Istanbul. Cat grass (Dactylis glomerata cat grass) seeds were sown in the prepared samples. Plant development was observed for 90 days. pH, Cd, Cu and Ni concentrations in plant samples were measured at the end of every month. Concentrations of forms of Cd, Cu and Ni forms in soil were determined at the beginning and at the end of 90 day period (with sequential extraction). The effect of MSW compost on the transfer of Cd, Cu and Ni from the soil to the plants and the change in the forms of heavy metals in soil was determined. Results of sequential extraction showed that, adding compost into the soil changed the forms of these metals in soil. Plant uptake of Cd decreased, however, those of Ni and Cu increased. Cu concentration in plants that grew in soil with 3 wt. % of compost added reached 136.4 μg/kg.

Opis:
The increasing numbers of PET studies for routine diagnosis creates a real hazard to radiation workers. The aim of this study is to estimate the annual whole-body and finger radiation dose to technologists working with 18F-FDG in a PET center with high patient potential. In our PET center, the number of PET imaging has increased almost to 5000 studies per year. Our standard dose for tumor imaging is 518 MBq of 18F-FDG. Five technologists performing all steps of 18F-FDG imaging (5 patients per technologist in a day) were officially involved round the week for handling and injecting 18F-FDG to patients. Whole-body and finger dose measurements with TLDs were performed for two different time periods: i) before shielding precautions during the first 6 months (without a shielding for sterile syringe and without a lead container for shielded syringe) and ii) after shielding precautions during the next 6 months (with a shielding for sterile syringe and with a lead container for shielded syringe). The average annual whole-body radiation dose for one technologist before shielding precautions was 7.82 mSv and after shielding precautions was 5.76 mSv. On the other hand, while the average annual finger radiation doses for one technologist before shielding precautions were 210.36 and 293.72 mSv for the left and right hand, after shielding precautions were they 158.16 and 217.58 mSv for the left and right hand, respectively. According to our results, if one technologist performs the whole-body PET imaging of 5 patients per day, the annual radiation dose to this technologist will not exceed the recommended limits by ICRP.

Opis:
Objectives A water pipe (hookah) is a tobacco smoking tool which is thought to be more harmless than a cigarette, and there are no adequate studies about its hazards to health. Water-pipe smoking is threatening health of the youth in the world today. The objective of this study has been to investigate the carbon monoxide (CO) levels in breath, examine the changes in pulmonary function tests (PFT) and to assess the change of the oxidative stress parameters in blood after smoking a water pipe. Material and Methods This study is a cross-sectional analytical study that has included 50 volunteers who smoke a water pipe and the control group of 50 volunteers who smoke neither a cigarette nor a water pipe. Carbon monoxide levels were measured in the breath and pulmonary function tests (PFTs) were performed before and after smoking a water pipe. Blood samples were taken from either the volunteer control group or water-pipe smokers group after smoking a water pipe for the purpose of evaluation of the parameters of oxidative stress. Results Carbon monoxide values were measured to be 8.08±7.4 ppm and 28.08±16.5 ppm before and after smoking a water pipe, respectively. This increment was found statistically significant. There were also significant reductions in PFTs after smoking a water pipe. Total oxidative status (TOS), total antioxidant status (TAS) and oxidative stress index (OSI) were found prominently higher after smoking a water pipe for the group of water-pipe smokers than for the control group. Conclusions This study has shown that water-pipe smoking leads to deterioration in pulmonary function and increases oxidative stress. To the best of our knowledge this study is the only one that has shown the effect of water-pipe smoking on oxidative stress. More studies must be planned to show the side effects of water-pipe habit and protective policies should be planned especially for young people in Europe.
