Opis:
Urbanistyka, architektura i ogólnie pojęta kultura wizualna powojennego Szczecina zajmuje w debacie nad kształtem nowoczesnej metropolii miejsce wyjątkowe.
Urbanism, architecture and broadly defined visual culture of postwar-Szczecin take a unique place in the discussion on the shape of modern metropolis. Like in a lens, there were coincided the political problems connected to the change of the nationality of the agglomeration and to building of the so-called People’s Poland’s new political system, with the all-European problems of artistic reform. Piotr Zaremba (1910–1993) has fulfilled the crucial role in this process being as the first Polish president of the city not only the main local politician, but also due to his education and professional experience – the first local urban planner. Those were his decisions that directed the range and the character of the reconstruction of ruined old substance and the creation of new space structures. This paper makes an attempt to give an answer to the question of their formal and ideological origins dating back to the early 30s: the time of Zaremba’s study at the Lviv Technical College as well as the engineering practice in the modernizing and generating a new identity Post-Wilhelminist Poznań of interwar period. The journey, the lectures of the young designer and the intellectual atmosphere of national-democratic and partially revisionistrightist environment influenced the development of the new polish city after 1945.

What hides behind such mysterious terms as perverbs, anti-, quasi-, and twisted proverbs? What is their status in modern paremiology? Do bona fide proverbs influence their modified versions or vice versa? Do modified proverbs belong to the proverbial family or are they completely distinct linguistic formations? These are some of the many que, stions concerning perverbs, anti-, quasi- and twisted proverbs, ubiquitous nowadays in newspapers, advertisements, cartoons, or health campaigns. As an illustration, the present paper deals with such sayings as No body is perfect; An onion a day keeps everyone away; Man proposes, mother-in-law opposes; He who laughs last, thinks slowest; Where there is a will, there is a war and others. By providing a glimpse into the goldmine of stylistic and conceptual devices used in their creation, this paper attempts to unveil the mechanisms that contribute to the emergence of the novel meanings found in modified proverbs.

Opis:
The study focuses on Katherine Manfield’s short story entitled Psychology. A detailed analysis and interpretation aim at clarification what is missing in the story, as while reading the story one may feel the lack of something. The main character (“she”) has two guests who are parallel to each other and thus the story can be divided into two parts. Thanks to the second visit (of her female friend) the main character regains the peace of mind, which was ruined by man’s (the first guest’s) deviating from the established code of conduct in their relationship. Definitely, in the text the dominating function is the phatic function of language. However, it does not work as an introduction to a conversation but it is the conversation itself. The story builds a world in which there is no real contact between the characters and it may be interpreted as a reflection of a superfluous reading of a literary work of art. Nonetheless, the story invites the reader to the more careful reception of the literary text, paradoxically, by means of, among others, such a simple plot, a visible discrepancy between the open dialogues and the utterances of “secret selves”, autothematic allusions and the lack of the diachronic dimension.

Opis:
The paper focuses on an undercurrent analysis of social problems present in almost all Kazimiera Alberti’s work written in an interwar period. A kind of “hierarchy” of people suffering from social, economic, ethnic and gender inequality is evident in Alberti’s works. This “hierarchy” could be considered as hell circles, although a gradation of pain and misery depends on a level of social rejection, not on committed sins. Alberti puts cultural and ethnic hybrids in the deepest circle of hell – those people are perceived as others/aliens (and often not as human beings) by both (or more) cultures/communities, they are “made” from.

An important aspect, however, is that these children were born from unions between the occupants and local women. The act itself may have been voluntary or forced, and the book refers only to the latter. The book is an important attempt to fill a large research gap that could not be filled for many years, due to communist rule in Poland as well as the women themselves or surrogate families concealing the truth.

Opis:
The influence of the Modern Movement was increasingly felt in Hungary from the end of the 1920s. As time passed, architectural education also needed to respond to these changes. How did the professors, who designed in historical styles, react to the new situation, and how did the students respond? Who were the people who first stimulated interest in modern architecture, and who did they inspire? What kind of institutional or structural modifications did all these initiatives bring about at the Architectural Faculty of Budapest Technical University? There are three noteworthy episodes in the history of introducing modern approaches at the Faculty. The first event of great significance was the establishment of the Department of General Building Design in 1922 besides the three long-standing historical departments: the Departments of Ancient, Middle and Modern Ages. This began a disengagement with the era of historicism. However, students in the older years continued to receive their design assignments from the historical departments, and were expected to design in historical styles taught by the professors. Thus architectural education could be considered conservative even by the end of the 1920s. On the other hand, some students were able to bring progressive modernism directly to the University. At the student exhibition held in 1927, a few “brave” drawings independent of any department appeared among the designs in historical styles. These included a design by György Rácz inspired by Le Corbusier that was showcased thanks to the curator, a student named György Masirevich. Farkas Molnár – who returned from the Bauhaus school – submitted a design influenced by modern German architecture. Within a few years Masirevich, Rácz and Molnár joined CIAM, and then its subgroup: CIRPAC. It was not only students, but also some professors who played an indisputable role in ushering in modern architecture, even if their work and teaching methods could generally be regarded as examples of “conservative progression”. The third and most important date of the investigated period was 1930, when architectural education began to be given high priority. That year another student exhibition was organised by a professor, Iván Kotsis, which was linked to the 12th International Congress of Architects held in Budapest. Plans designed by students in the modern spirit constituted the majority at that exhibition. It was in the same year that professor Hültl as the Rector of the University voiced his opinion on modern architecture: according to him, modernism should not be used for certain types of buildings; however, he did not want to oppose all new directions in architecture. This duality of approach can well be detected in his private practice. Therefore it was the so-called “other modern” rather than progressive modernism that became institutionalized at the Faculty due to the influence of some professors whose aim was to comply better with local circumstances and materials. To achieve this it was indispensable to get the knowledge of the past, so teaching history of architecture remained a significant part of the curriculum. It was Professor Kotsis and his colleagues who laid out this path and their heritage was still prevalent after WWII.

Exploiting new digital resources — especially with the help of new findings in surname geography, the surname stock can be captured and analysed allencompassing and systematically.Surnames of foreign origin like English, French, Italian, Slavic, Baltic or Turkish are also considered. The importance of Slavic roots in German surnames is exemplified by the name Novak (‛new settler’) which ranks position 156 in the total frequency of German surnames. The article’s outlook discusses the importance and possibilities for future cooperation with surname projects in other countries like Poland, with a longterm perspective for a European network of surname dictionaries.

The paper describes images of other cultures included in Bohomolec’s dissertation and contemporary phenomena which seem to be parallel to the phenomena described by the Jesuit. The Author has noticed that the examples of magic activities in Bohomolec’s book are subordinated to educational value of the dissertation. Exemplification from non-European countries illustrates a thought that similar or identical behaviours are common in many cultures and places. They also bear out that superstitions are an across-theboard phenomenon. In the second part of the paper, the Author focuses on contemporary cultural trends in the context of popularity of magic. She considers timeliness and anachronism of some of the Bohomolec’s approaches and his wrong prognosis.

This study deals with the finds of fibulae from the Hallstatt period sites of the Vekerzug culture from Eastern Hungary and Southern Slovakia. The majority of the fibulae come from graves, the rest are either stray or settlement finds. Providing a more complex overview of the fibulae was at the centre of our interest, focused mainly on a cultural and spatial analysis, their possible relation to the specific gender or age category of the burial individuals and on possible importance of the fibulae for the costumes of the Vekerzug culture. Two main origin groups of the fibulae were identified, namely the fibulae of the Hallstatt type and the fibulae of Balkan origin. The fibulae were predominantly found in the graves of adult females. Their costumes do not differ from the female costumes of the Vekerzug culture without fibulae.

Oral narratives are present in all known cultures. In Latin America, cultures and peoples are mestizos, hybrids, born of centuries of influence and linguistic and cultural imposition of European colonizers and contact with different population contingents. The paper aims to discuss the oral narratives affiliated with the legendary Argentine and Brazilian as socio-communicative practices that reveal this hybrid identity, which as such must be understood as a constitutive part of the cultural identity of the speakers who produce them. To this end, we anchor ourselves to language and cultural studies that advocate an interactive and socio-historically situated notion of language and reflections on narration, identity, and fictional discourse. At the same time, we seek to build a path that allows the discussion of some concepts that we consider relevant to this study. The methodology adopted is of a qualitative nature of an interpretive nature, having as the object of analysis oral and written narratives taken from two corpora, one collected on the urban peripheries of Buenos Aires and the other in the interior of Santarém, Pará, Brazil.

Opis:
This article reviews part of the stage history of Shakespeare’s Othello in Chile and, in particular, it focuses on two performances of the play: the first, in 1818, and the last one in 2012-2020. By comparing both productions, I aim to establish the exact date and theatrical context of the first Chilean staging of the Shakespearean tragedy using historical sources and English travellers’ records, as well as to explore how the representation of a Moor and of blackness onstage evolved both in its visual dimension — the choice of costumes and the use of blackface—, and in its racial connotations alongside deep social changes. During the nineteenth century Othello became one of the most popular plays in Chile, being performed eleven times in the period of 31 years, a success that also occurred in Spain between 1802 and 1833. The early development of Chilean theatre was very much influenced not only by the ideas of the Spaniards who arrived in the country, but also by the available Spanish translations of Shakespeare; therefore, I argue that the first performances of Othello as Other — different in origin and in skin colour — were characterised by an imitative style, since actors repeated onstage the biased image of Moors that Spaniards had brought to Chile. While the assessment of Othello and race is not new, this article contrasts in its scope, as I do not discuss the protagonist’s actual origin, but how the changes in Chilean social and cultural contexts can reshape and reconfigure the performance of blackness and turn it into a meaningful translation of the Shakespearean Moor that activates audiences’ awareness of racism and fears of miscegenation.

The mature poetry of Tadeusz Różewicz seems to be at odds with both modernist and postmodern literary tenets. Różewicz again immerses allusions to images, texts and other artifacts – which, according to formalist and structuralist interpretations, should disengage themselves from an artist’s biography in order to achieve aesthetic autonomy – in the current of life, devoid of an innate sense and always identical to itself. In fact, life cannot be apprehended by art, and precisely, Różewicz tries to thematize this impossibility by producing texts or rather poetical acts that could be classified as self-effacing artifacts. He even succeeded in discrediting the modernist epiphany (which has a double status, i.e. as a poetical device and a window on the transcendent) by replacing it with loquacious anticlimaxes. The fragmentary, disintegrating form of his later poetry (the long poem “Francis Bacon or Diego Velázquez in a dentist’s chair” is a perfect – or rather consciously imperfect – implementation of this form) does not pretend to be a representation of a human being’s disintegrating existence. This poetry is, above all, an existential act, or – in other words – a performance, and not a self-sufficient work of art.
