Opis:
Introduction: Aging is accompanied by several physiological and psychological changes in the organism of an individual (e.g., decreased sense of taste and smell, disruption of satiety, depression), which affect the nutritional intake. Purpose: The purpose of this retrospective study is to highlight the nutritional habits of elderly people. Materials and methods: Extensive review of the recent literature in electronic databases (Pub med, Google scholar) and journals. Exclusion criterion for the articles was the language than the Greek and English. Results: The increase life expectancy is important to be accompanied by physical and mental health, quality of life and, where possible, from participation in social, economic, cultural and spiritual life. Adopting healthy dietary patterns, combined with daily physical activity, and factors such as avoiding smoking, could help considerably in reaching these goals. The physical and psychological changes occurring during aging may adversely affect nutritional status. Instead, a proper diet can positively influence the physical and emotional state of elderly people. Conclusions: Diet and generally nutrition habits of the elderly play an important role in their health.

Drawing on Simone de Beauvoir’s call for a change perspective on old age, as perceive, this article reviews the literature for factors and aspects that influence the quality of life of the elderly. Simone de Beauvoir saw old age as the individual’s unending struggle with the indifference that elderly people encounter, and with pain and illnesses. The improvement in the situation of the elderly cannot be accomplished by merely raising pensions and providing fair housing; rather it is necessary to have a more profound change – a change of life (de Beauvior, 1996). Hence, improving the quality life of elderly people necessitates a more holistic approach, that considers physical functioning, mental, social, environmental and cognitive condition in addition to traditional aspects involving health and economic aspects.

This paper presents anthropometric data on elderly people in Australia. Data were collected in the metropolitan city of Sydney, NSW, Australia. In all 171 elderly people (males and females, aged 65 years and above) took part in the study. Mean values, standard deviations, medians, range, and coefficients of variation for the various body dimensions were estimated. Correlation coefficients were also calculated to determine the relationship between different body dimensions for the elderly population. The mean stature of elderly Australian males and females were compared with populations from other countries. The paper discusses design implications for elderly people and provides several examples of application of the anthropometric data.

Systematic physical activity leads to some physical and psychological benefits for the body, and therefore, it is considered to be best practice in the prevention of public health. This statement is particularly important in the case of the elderly, as regular, individually-designed exercises, give way to an active lifestyle, which is important in the light of the increasing number of the elderly in Poland. The study aimed to evaluate physical activity of University of the Third Age students. The research material consisted of 73 people aged 60–74. Utilized in the study was a diagnostic survey method, with a specially-designed survey questionnaire constituted of 20 questions referring to pro-health lifestyle and physical activity of the subjected group. Based on the results analysis, it was concluded that the subjected elderly lead a healthy lifestyle and systematically undertake physical activity, which seems to be a very positive tendency.

Opis:
Common health problems of the elderly in the near future will become even more common with aging of the population and longer average life expectancy. The elderly tend to have multiple disorders at one time, some of which may aggravate the course of others. One of the most common diseases, diabetes – “the epidemics of XXI century”, treatment of which costs approximately 11% of world health care budget – is the leading reason of chronic kidney disease and end-stage renal disease. Diabetic nephropathy can be a complication of both diabetes mellitus type 1 and 2. The most numerous group of patients with recently-made diagnosis are these above 60 years of age. Albuminuria, which, depending on its intensity, is one of the diagnostic criteria, can appear even in the process of aging itself. Overlapping of structural and functional changes that develop with age and those caused by diabetes is therefore a challenge, both diagnostic and clinical. There are certain methods of early diagnosis and prevention of progression of diabetic kidney disease. There is, however, no targeted treatment and existing therapies are generally based on glycemia and blood pressure control. Some patients in the advanced stage undergo dialyses just like in other kidney failure cases. The course of the disease is influenced by modifiable factors, such as protein and salt intake or cigarette smoking. In the light of the fact that this problem will concern an increasing number of patients, diagnostics and treatment can and should be introduced in the early stages of the disease. This all fits within the recently popular “healthy aging” ideology. Its popularization and implementation can bring measurable benefits of social and economic character.

Introduction. Physical activity is known to be an important factor influencing health throughout human life. This issue has become crucial for public health due to the aging of the population in both developed and developing countries. Aim. is to present a literature review on the forms of physical activity undertaken by the elderly, as well as on issues related to physical activity and the population aging. Material and methods. The study was prepared on the basis of a review of Polish and foreign literature. The following databases and data sources were used: EBSCO, ScienceDirect and Google Scholar. An additional source of data were the websites of the Central Statistical Office. Strictly defined key phrases were used during the collection of literature. The work has been divided into thematic subsections on the aging of the society, the impact of physical activity on health and the main topic, i.e. forms of physical activity selected by the elderly. Analysis of the literature. The number of elderly people in Polish society has increased by almost 3.7 million over three decades. Therefore, an important topic is prophylaxis aimed at increasing the number of days in good health, largely covering the broadly understood activation of the elderly. The available data indicate that only 12% of elderly people undertake physical activity once a week. The most common form of spending free time actively is walking (as many as 73% of people in this population declare this form of physical activity in one of the presented studies). Conclusion. Organized forms of physical activity are undertaken much less frequently by the analyzed age group mainly due to financial limitations and limited availability of sports infrastructure

Opis:
Background. The elderly are at greater risk of underweight and the associated risk of protein and energy malnutrition. On the other hand, the lower energy requirement with an often too high intake from the diet leads to the development of overweight and obesity. Objective. The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence of underweight, overweight and obesity, including abdominal obesity in Polish elderly. Material and methods. The study included 300 men and 304 women aged 65 and over from all over the country. The nutritional status was assessed on the basis of anthropometric measurements: body height and weight as well as waist and hip circumferences. Based on BMI (Body Mass Index), the prevalence of underweight (<20.0), overweight (25.0-29.9) and obesity (≥30.0) was assessed. WHR (Waist-to-Hip Ratio) was used to assess abdominal obesity (≥1.0 in men and ≥0.85 in women). Waist circumference was also analysed with regard to increased risk of metabolic complications (≥94 cm in men and ≥80 cm in women). Results. Underweight was found in 1.3% of men and 4.3% of women. 55.3% of men and 40.1% of women were overweight, 20.3% and 21.7% were obese, respectively. In the case of people with excess body weight, abdominal obesity was observed in 50% of men and 70.1% of women. Waist circumference indicating an increased risk of metabolic complications was found in 44.1% of men and 67.5% of women. Conclusions. The prevalence of overweight and obesity in Polish elderly was high, especially in men. Overweight and obese people often had abdominal obesity. This type of obesity was more common in women. Elderly people, especially women, often have an increased risk of metabolic complications due to high fat accumulation in the abdomen. It was even found in elderly who were not overweight nor obese. Some elderly, mostly women, were underweight which increased the risk of protein and energy malnutrition.
Wprowadzenie. Materiał i metody. Badaniem objęto 300 mężczyzn i 304 kobiety w wieku 65 lat i więcej z terenu całego kraju. Ocenę stanu odżywienia badanych przeprowadzono na podstawie pomiarów antropometrycznych: wysokości i masy ciała oraz obwodów talii i bioder. Na podstawie wskaźnika BMI oceniono występowanie niedoboru masy ciała (<20,0), nadwagi (25,0-29,9) i otyłości (≥30,0). Wskaźnik WHR służył do oceny otyłości brzusznej (≥1,0 u mężczyzn i ≥0,85 u kobiet). Analizowano również obwód talii związany ze zwiększonym ryzykiem zaburzeń metabolicznych (≥94 cm u mężczyzn i ≥80 cm u kobiet). Wyniki. Niedobór masy ciała stwierdzono u 1,3% mężczyzn i 4,3% kobiet. Nadwagą odznaczało się 55,3% mężczyzn i 40,1% kobiet, a otyłością, odpowiednio 20,3% i 21,7%. W przypadku osób z nadmierną masą ciała u 50% mężczyzn i 70,1% kobiet występowała otyłość brzuszna. Obwód talii wskazujący na zwiększone ryzyko powikłań metabolicznych stwierdzono u 44,1% mężczyzn i 67,5% kobiet. Wnioski.

The main aim of this study is to consider and present pedagogy students’ attitudes towards the elderly. The results presented herein were collected in a pilot project. The survey was conducted among 66 pedagogy students; a questionnaire and the semantic differential method were used as the research tools. The results revealed positive attitudes among the students towards the elderly. However, a conclusion was drawn that pedagogy students should be allowed to take part in activities involving the elderly. Students’s awareness of their own attitudes might allow them to understand elderly people’s behavior. A proper understanding of the aging process and old age can create a chance for better communication and inter-generational cooperation. It is also an inspiration for understanding their own aging process.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of this review is to present a broader scope on osteoporosis – both as a medical problem and as a major social burden. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease, characterized by low bone mass, leading to increased bone fragility and fractures. It does not only lead to major medical expenses, lower health-related quality-of-life but also strains the population with significant social burden. As modern science is intensively exploring the problem of osteoporosis, new research articles expanding our knowledge on this disease come out weekly. This growing body of research calls for an up-to-date review of the existing state of knowledge on osteoporosis. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: This manuscript presents and overview on osteoporosis and associated problems such as fractures in the following order (1) Etiology and pathogenesis of osteoporosis, (2) Osteoporosis risk factors, (3) Epidemiology of osteoporosis, (4) Aging of the Polish population, (5) Clinical consequences of osteoporosis, (6) Criteria of the World Health Organization (WHO) for Caucasian women after menopause, (7) Morbidity and mortality associated with osteoporotic fractures, (8) Risk factors related to the collapse of the condition of osteoporotic patients, (9) Bone fragility and falls, (10) Recognizing osteoporosis, (11) Prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, (12) Cost of treating fractures, (13) Fracture liaison service, (14) Senior care, (15) Purpose of modern geriatrics, (16) Social inequalities and osteoporosis. RESEARCH RESULTS: The two major determinants of risk in the development of osteoporosis are peak bone mass and rate of bone loss. These two determinants are influenced by a number of genetic (non-modifiable) and environmental (partly modifiable, and modifiable) factors. Osteoporosis is becoming increasingly prevalent with the aging of the world population. Worldwide, more than 200 million people are suffering from osteoporosis, and 1 in 2 women and 1 in 4 men over 50 will have an osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetime. About 5% of falls result in fractures, half of which are proximal femur fractures. Out of all falls leading to fractures, 10‑25% result in injury or requirement of specialized medical care. Falls are one of the main causes of disability and the fifth most common cause of death in people over 75 years of age. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: This review provides a concise overview om osteoporosis as a linked medical and social problem. It also identified a number of knowledge gaps necessary to fill in order to progress our knowledge on osteoporosis diagnosis, prevention and treatment. Understanding patients’ preferences and needs will allow to align them with appropriate service models which are likely to optimize patient outcomes.

Time definition of this process is very difficult, because the life situation of an individual human being significantly changes its course. In the evaluation of the aging process of the elderly in addition to calendar age, which to a small extent determines the spiritual and physical human efficiency, the biological age and mental state together with the social situation should also be taken into account. The age of sixty five has conventionally been adopted as the lower limit of old age. In the group of people crossing that limit there is a substantial difference in the condition and needs, which to a lesser extent depend on chronological age and to greater extent on other factors. Older people during this period of their lives experience numerous medical and social problems (major geriatric problems, loneliness, ageism).

Opis:
Fall detection of the elderly is a major public health problem. The probability of falls makes them dependent on others and restricts their freedom of movement. Although many fall detection methods have been developed to recognize falls in a real-time, most are inaccurate and inconvenient to use. In this paper we describe two methods for detecting the fall of a human body that can be implemented for the smartphones with built-in accelerometer. The first one used the raw data obtained from the sensor, and the second one - filtered data. In addition to the measuring a load factor, an important role in the algorithms has also a mobile device orientation to the ground. The assumption for the study was the localization of the smartphone in a right pocket of trousers - common in right-handed people. The experiment consisted in simulation the falls from different initial postures (standing, sitting, kneeling) in four directions (front, back, left, right). The results are satisfactory for detection of falls from a standing position. In conclusion, correct detection of falls based on the accelerometer built into the smartphone is possible after the filtration of the raw data, although the location of this device, the initial body position and direction of the fall have significant impact.

Opis:
Suicides are a major problem in the modern world. In the literature, they are investigated in their sociological, psychological, health-related, and criminological aspects. The age of the people committing suicide is diverse, with the most vulnerable groups being children and the elderly. Aging is a natural and universal process of life. The changes it causes are gradual, but irreversible at the same time. They involve many spheres of life of an individual. In today’s world, there is a cult of youth, resulting in the elderly not being fully respected by the society. Especially in the urban environment, an elderly person is frequently treated as anonymous and often decrepit. The manner in which they generally conform to the requirements of reality influences their aging in a positive or negative way. Retirement, socioeconomic consequences, reduction of life autonomy, the felt loneliness, lack of support on the part of relatives, and diseases may ultimately push an elderly person to committing suicide. Using the Scopus, Wiley Online Library, PubMed and Web of Science repositories in the current study we have carried out an analysis of research literature from 2014–2015 in regard to suicide risk factors and specificity among the elderly.
Zaprzestanie wykonywania pracy zawodowej, konsekwencje socjoekonomiczne, ograniczenie samodzielności, samotność, brak wsparcia ze strony bliskich i obecność zmian o charakterze chorobowym mogą popychać osobę starszą do popełnienia samobójstwa.

Introduction. In effect of the ageing process, there are involutional changes in older adults both in the mental and in the physical spheres. Some factors may slow down the ageing process. Physical activity is one of these factors. Physical ability is one of the most important indicators of quality of life of older adults, and it can be shaped by physical activity. Aim. The aim of the study was to assess chosen factors that influence physical ability of adults older than 65 years. Material and methods. The study involved 63 older adults. The criterion for inclusion in the study was the age - older than 65 years. There were 37 women and 26 men in the study population. All the subjects were able to walk without assistance, and they had no contraindications to do functional tests. We used a questionnaire of our own design, three SPPB trials, Up&Go test; we calculated the BMI indices and assessed depression scale. Results. We found that older adults rarely engage in physical activity. The low level of physical activity of the older adults was reflected in equally low physical ability level, as assessed by functional tests. We found a directly proportional dependence between body mass and the level of functional limitations and risk of falls. Conclusion. In our functional tests, we found a statistically significant correlation with regard to age and BMI index.

Opis:
W artykule zaprezentowano prorodzinne podejście do problemu edukacji i formacji osób starszych. Stąd pilna potrzeba duszpasterstwa osób w podeszłym wieku we wspólnocie rodzinnej i parafialnej. W końcu wszelkie teoretyczne podstawy pedagogii osób starszych mogą zostać rozwiązane i rozwiązania proponowane mogą zostać zweryfikowane na gruncie refleksji gerontologicznej dopiero w bezpośrednim kontakcie z osobami starszymi w rodzinie.
The article presents a familiological approach to the problem of education and formation of the elderly. Various circles are interested in what constitutes positive aging, among them the family as the first and fundamental "school of social virtues" (cf. GE 3). Gerontology is the study of aging and old age, field that has been developing dynamically in recent years, proposing new educational models of (transcendent) culture pedagogy, e.g. "gerotranscendence" or "accompanying pedagogy". It is worth confronting them with biblical sources and the teaching of the Church on contemporary aging processes. An important direction of senior education and accompanying the elderly in the family is correcting the negative image of old age and presenting it as an opportunity for intellectual, socio-cultural and spiritual development. Hence the urgent need for pastoral care for the elderly in the family and parish community. The value of the chosen concept lies in a positive but also realistic approach to the involvement of seniors. After all, it is only in direct contact with elderly people in the family that all theoretical foundations of the pedagogy of the elderly give the opportunity to verify the proposed solutions on the basis of gerontological reflection.

Opis:
Authors of the contribution is concerned with feeding the elderly, which is frequently discussed a serious problem. Increasing age is a risk factor for the development of nutritional disorders, and therefore the old connection with the frequent occurrence of these disorders, especially with malnutrition. Nutritional disorders in old age lead to serious health problems, prolonging illness and mortality, not least, degradation the quality of life. By reason to demographic changes in terms of life expectancy increasing and the increasing number of elderly people, this issue is highly topical. In case of illness in old age there is a higher risk of malnutrition. The old and the chronically ill in this respect are vulnerable group. Between nutritional status and disease severity, there is a close relationship. It is true that the mere malnutrition is associated with higher mortality and morbidity. Also, every chronic disease leads to malnutrition and malnutrition every clinically latent disease. The most frequent type of malnutri- tion in the elderly is a protein-energy malnutrition with simple starvation, which leads to weight loss. In practice usually carried combinations more examination methods. The basic methods used in the diagnosis of eating disorders in the elderly include: nutritional history, anthropometric and physical examination, laboratory tests and nutritional standardized questionnaires.

Opis:
Warto wspomnieć Nursing home in Alcacer do Sal czy Santa Rita Geriatric Center.
Designing public spaces, including housing environment, should take into account demographic studies and forecasts relating to the position of older people in the contemporary world. Due to the common phenomenon of aging in European societies, there is a need to adjust architecture to the needs of the elderly. Nowadays, there has been a clear improvement in the approach to designing public spaces and appropriate residential forms for senior citizens and disabled people. Regrettably, in the Polish reality not all constitutional provisions are acknowledged, and architectural barriers are impossible to overcome for the elderly, which causes isolation of this social group. On the basis of relevant research, a division could be made into two groups of people: the elderly who live in their own homes – independently, people using Day Care Centres, using Home Care services, and using nursing homes – in the formula of independent living, assisted living, and nursing home. The latter are getting more and more popular in western countries, where entire centres are built, adjusted to the needs of the elderly who live in them independently. There are many examples of the application of innovative architectural forms intended for and adjusted to a specific community of elderly people, whose needs, values, and lifestyle are specific. It is worth mentioning the nursing home in Alcácer do Sal, or Santa Rita Geriatric Center. Whereas the former complex looks very impressive from the outside and it naturally blends in the topography of the land, the dominating white brings associations with a hospital. The other project, perhaps less attractive from the outside, was designed by the architect as an optimistic place, encouraging to go on living, and creating the atmosphere of vitality. In Poland, the most popular are small facilities, family social welfare centres, or housing estates for senior citizens. Thanks to EU funds there are many programmes and social initiatives whose goal is to activate people aged >60. In our country, too, we can find examples of centres for senior citizens, e.g. the TriVita Care Nursing Home in Porąbka, the external form of which seems quite mediocre when compared to architectural projects implemented globally; nevertheless, the surrounding area, picturesque views, the distance from the hustle and bustle of cities fosters the sense of wellness of senior citizens. An interesting alternative could be the Senior Home in the Nowe Żerniki housing estate in Wrocław. This project is an attempt to combine the needs of three generations: senior citizens, adults, and children in one housing estate. In the context of demographic forecasts, the search of systemic solutions, and not one-off architectural concepts and studies, seems to be particularly important. The concept of integration and adaptation of public spaces to the needs of the elderly and the disabled should become a fact.

The European project entitled "Integrating adults and the elderly towards a Europe of knowledge", coordinated by the University of Almería, within the actions of "Grundtvig learning partnerships for adult education", has carried out the assessment of an educational program for people over 55 years in five countries. The aim of the learning partnership was “to encourage the development of innovative practices in education of older people and their transfer between countries”. Methods: Some of the following teaching tools and methods were used to promote intercultural communication skills: simulation activities, followed by reflective discussion and/or written analysis; guided group activities; local visits to contact people from other countries; ethnographic projects. Results: The courses provide knowledge and understanding about culture, institutions and different ways of life in diverse communities, and encourage reflection about their own cultural behaviour, practices and attitudes, as well as those of others. Old people enhance communication in their community, by means of meetings in which they talk about their common concerns. This can help the elderly to overcome problems and reduce feelings of loneliness. The courses also help old people acquire new knowledge and skills in a rapidly changing world. Conclusions: Participants’ motivation increased as the sessions were developed, since the contents of the classes agreed with their own interests, with a constant widening of knowledge. Everybody had an active role in the discussions. This training has shown some aspects about ageing, such as the removal of the image of  the idle retired person; at the same time it promotes active retirement, intergenerational relationships and independence, and improves social and personal skills

Applied Theatre is an inclusive term used to host a variety of powerful, community-based participatory processes and educational practices. Historically, Applied Theatre practices include Theatre-in-Education (TiE), Theatre-in-Health Education (THE), Theatre for Development (TfD), prison theatre, community theatre, theatre for conflict resolution/reconciliation, reminiscence theatre with elderly people, theatre in museums, galleries and heritage centres, theatre at historic sites, and more recently, theatre in hospitals. In this paper we are positioning the application of recreational dramatic activities with older adults (55+) under Applied Theatre and we are exploring the benefits they offer to the participants. We are concerned that their health and wellbeing in western societies is not prioritized and it is clear that loneliness in particular is a current and ongoing issue. We will present research results from a drama dissertation study that took place in a community hall in the South East England where drama is placed at the core of their practice with old populations. Data was collected by a mixed method (semi-structured interviews and semi-immersive observations) and was critically discussed amongst the authors to conclude that attending recreational drama classes brings a certain degree of happiness, social belonging and improvement of interaction with others to old people’s lives.

The age of household members is an important factor for expenditures. The aim of the study is to investigate the level of expenditure on restaurants and hotels incurred in Polish households of the elderly in 2004-2013 and to identify the factors affecting such expenditures. The source of information used in the study was the household budget survey of the Central Statistical Office of Poland. The main methods used in this study were variance analysis and regression analysis. Restaurants and hotels expenditure increases every year together with their share in total household expenditure. The most important factors affecting the restaurants and hotels spending in Polish households of the elderly are: income per capita and the level of education of the head of the family. The study on consumption determinants at different groups leads to better understanding of consumer behavior circumstances and thereby ensuring a good quality of life for the people of the elderly.

Opis:
Two major socioeconomic trends are currently changing the terrain of the elderly care – the population is ageing and the geriatric health care system is under an increasing strain. This will soon pose serious challenges for the public health system along with the state budget and family finances. Healthy ageing must become a priority objective for both the population and personal health services and to address the task will require innovative prevention programming. Despite the rising health care costs, the public health care system is poorly managed, fragmented and depersonalised. The ageing of the population means that more senior citizens will need care for longer periods of time, and the strain on the health care system will continue to intensify. Already today many health care institutions have a limited capacity to respond adequately to the needs of the ageing population. What is more, geriatric care differs from standard adult health care because it focuses on the unique needs of the elderly person. The aged body is physiologically different from the younger adult body, and in the old age the decline of various organ systems becomes more manifest.

Opis:
Population ageing is one of the most important problems of the 21st century economy. Similarly, the subject of creating a living space for the elderly, taking into consideration their specific needs resulting from functional disability in the context of the ever growing population of elderly people is one of the key challenges that modern architecture has to face. The aim of the article is to present the physical environment of geriatric care facilities as a system of functional and behavioural stimuli in the context of ergonomic as well as social solutions, which may have influence on the economic development – by stimulating the activity of the elderly, as well as on the development of a number of disciplines connected with old age. It has been assumed that there exists a number of spatial determinants which may become elements supporting the elderly as well as the people involved in providing care for them. Therefore it is necessary to improve the standard of technical equipment and to modernize the architectural space targeted at the elderly.

Opis:
The article focuses on showing the position of the elderly in the Church as a community of people. Changing reality is not conducive to valorisation of old age, on the contrary, seniors are exposed to marginalization and exclusion. The Church in its teaching and ministry can contribute to the acceptance and survival of old age with dignity.

Opis:
Over the last decades, a trend of population aging has been observed in Poland and across the world. It is a result of extended lifespan, increased quality of life and higher standards of health care. The gradually growing group of the elderly in Poland results in a steadily increasing significance of this consumer market. Services, in particular e-services, may play a pivotal role in the life of the elderly, helping them to better function in the society and satisfy their basic and higher needs. As a results, the group of consumers in question must move from traditional solutions to modern technologies e-services are based on. The objective of the study is to identify the behavior of the elderly (over 60 years old) in the Polish market of e-services. The study is based on secondary resource analysis, questionnaires and the CAWI method. The sample was randomly selected from the panel of users (n = 508). The results of the authors’ own study suggest that the commonly used services are e-trading and e-banking, meant satisfy daily needs more easily. The indicated benefits were, e.g., comfort, saved time and money, easier access to services

Opis:
Intergenerational relations form the basis of how every society functions. One of the ways to develop these relations is through intergenerational dialogue, which can also prevent and counteract modern social problems. However, that requires the active participation of both the young and the elderly. The underlying idea of the present study is the conviction that intergenerational dialogue is the key to the prevention of generational egocentrism. That is why the study considers the intergenerational dialogue as both a need and a challenge. What is stressed here is the benefit of intergenerational dialogue in the individual and social dimensions.

A questionnaire survey was conducted in the residential quarters of Guangzhou, for which 582 elderly people over 60 years old were randomly recruited. The hearing impairment of the participants was evaluated using the Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly (HHIE). The participants’ subjective responses to the acoustical environment of their living place and the impact of the living acoustical environment (LAE) on the participants were investigated. The results show that the participants with a low HHIE score and no hearing impairment evaluated their LAE more favourably, and they considered that the effect of the LAE on their daily life was weak. However, those with a high HHIE score and severe hearing impairment evaluated their LAE poorly, and considered its effect on their daily lives to be significant. For the elderly, the worse the hearing is, the higher their demand for a better LAE. Traffic noise, construction noise, noise from residential quarters, and noise from next door or upstairs neighbours were the main noise sources in the elderly’s living places, and traffic noise, construction noise, and noise from next door and upstairs were the most influential sources. 28.9% of the respondents had trouble hearing what their family said in their living place. The elderly without hearing impairment considered that continuous noise was the main reason that they could not hear what their family said in their living place, while those with hearing impairment believed that their own hearing problem was a contributing factor.

Opis:
Depression is the most common mental disorder among people over 65 years old, making it one of the most significant health problems for this population. Due to the fact that medications and psychological therapy are not effective in all cases, many studies in recent decades have highlighted alternative treatments for depression. In particular, physical exercise has been highlighted as a potentially beneficial form of treatment. The purpose of this paper was to conduct a review into the relationship between exercise and its effects on the treatment of depression in the elderly. Specifically, PubMed and Google Scholar were searched for articles on the effectiveness of physical activity interventions for the treatment of senile depression and the reduction of its symptoms. The results show that physical activity is effective for reducing the symptoms of depression amongst the elderly. The positive effects of physical activity in the treatment of depression in the elderly were found for both endurance and resistance exercises, and for low-, moderate- and high-intensity exercise. Positive effects were observed for both traditional and water-based forms of exercise. Aligning the type and intensity of exercise to the patient’s personal preferences also helps to enhance the effectiveness of training. Overall, it was concluded that physical exercise can serve as a valuable strategy for the protection of mental health amongst the elderly. However, more research is needed to clarify the most effective type, intensity, and frequency of exercises to treat depression.

Introduction. It is commonly known that physical activity has great influence on the quality of life and health in the people of all age groups. Physical activity has a beneficial influence on both functional and locomotive abilities, the dynamics of which deteriorates during the process of aging, and this in turn has an impact upon satisfaction of basic biological, social and psychological needs. Aim. The main purpose of this study was an assessment of selected factors affecting the level of physical activity in the elderly. Material and methods. The study group consisted of 100 participants (85 women and 15 men), aged from 65 to 69 years old. An International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) - Polish long version was used. Results. A high level of physical activity was reached by 44 participants, moderate level of physical activity was noted in 53 participants, and low in physical activity was found in 3 participants. Older the subjects reached lower MET value in case of job-related physical activity and higher MET value in case of physical activity in free time and total intense effort. Conclusion. The level of job-related physical activity, the level of physical activity in free time and the total intense level of activity depended on the age of the subjects. There were no association between the level of total physical activity and sex, place of residence and BMI of participants.

In the light of the Constitution of the Republic of Poland the citizen has the right to health care. This also applies to elderly people in a nursing home (DPS). The deepening of indigestion, the coexistence of many diseases, their chronicity and the level of complications trigger the increase in demand for DPS for systematic, 24-hour geriatric medical care (medical care, nursing and rehabilitation services). Realizing the health needs of elderly people in DPS by health care providers is a source of controversy, hence the need for legislative changes to shift the burden of health financing in DPS to the Polish National Health Fund (NFZ).

Individuals with particular qualities or characteristics are predisposed to develop cognitive impairment non dementia. The main aim to study socio-demographic factors and personality traits, that contribute to the development of depressive disorders in elderly patients with cognitive deficits. The purpose of the article was to show that it is important to investigate the socio-psychological factors that can worsen the course of cognitive impairment, which already comes with age. During the research an observational study involving 111 patients from Kazakhstan with cognitive deficits was conducted: 59 patients, whose depressive disorders had been identified by clinical and psychopathological research using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HRSD) and 52 patients for whom psychogenic depressive disorders had not been defined. The recruitment of the study participants was carried out in the state nursing home for the elderly and disabled. The study included male and female individuals aged 60-74 years with different national and ethnic backgrounds, with mild to moderate cognitive impairment, who wished to participate in the study and signed an informed consent to participate in the study. This study uncovered the primary factors that increase the chances of individuals with cognitive impairments developing a depressive disorder. These factors include personal attributes of the patients, such as their sex, whether they are married or not, and the quality of their relationship with their family members. In addition, personality traits from before their cognitive decline, such as a tendency for isolation, insecurity, and passivity, were also significant. This study could have an exceptional value for medicine and psychological workers on the whole and in Republic of Kazakhstan in particular to prevent depressive diseases were mentioned.

The article concerns the creation, in accordance with the EU idea of integrated accessibility, more and more favorable legal and design conditions for shaping the space of the residential development environment with equalized physical and social accessibility among elderly, disabled and non-disabled people. The research results presented in the article indicate the existing limitations and new possibilities in improving the general principles of creating urban assumptions for universal design. For this purpose, sixteen elements and their functional and spatial features were identified, which, in all people with various disabilities, as research has shown, directly increase the surrogate and corrective effectiveness of perception and communing with the residential development environment. From among those identified, those elements were distinguished which, in the residential development space, most equalize its accessibility for people in the characterized categories of visual, auditory, motor and intellectual disabilities. These are the elements of the spatial layouts of residential development, which also that have the strongest impact on increasing the safety, independence and freedom of movement of each inhabitant in their housing estate.

The analysis of explosive force, through rate of force development (RFD) and contractile impulse (CI), from handgrip strength data seems to be useful and promising information to study the aging of musculoskeletal system and health status. We aimed to test the hypothesis that, in elderly women, the handgrip explosive force could be better associated to the functional mobility than maximum handgrip strength. Handgrip strength and the performance of Timed Up & Go Test (TUG) were measured from sixty-five community-dwelling healthy elderly women. The average slope of the moment–time curve (Δ moment/Δ time) over the time interval of 0–200 ms relative to the onset of contraction was calculated to provide the RFD and CI. The highest strength achieved during the isometric contraction was used as maximum handgrip strength. Pearson correlations were used to assess the strength of the relationship between the handgrip strength parameters (Maximum strength and explosive force from 0–200 ms) and TUG test performance from older women. The correlation analysis showed that the TUG test performance was inversely correlated to the handgrip strength parameters, with better relationship with explosive force parameters. The handgrip explosive force seems to be a promising predictor of functional mobility of elderly women, since it showed a better relationship with functional mobility than maximum handgrip strength.

The world is facing a series of changes that will modify the way we envisage transport planning in our cities. Demographic ageing as a consequence of higher life expectancy and lower fertility rates is a world-wide phenomenon. While ageing is indeed a triumph of scientific progress and increasing longevity is perceived as one of humanity’s greatest achievements, the transition in society needs to be managed. In the urban context, any increase in age, health, and economic conditions determines one’s ability to enjoy the urban milieu and the so-called economies of urbanisation (advantages gained from an urban location, e.g., proximity to a market, labour supply, good communications, and financial and commercial services) longer. As there are more and more elderly people in cities, urban mobility becomes crucial in making the urban environment more inclusive. In order to provide suitable policy guidelines, it is, therefore, necessary to investigate and understand senior traveller behaviour.   In this study, we investigate urban travel characteristics of people aged 65 years and over living in the city of Genoa (one of the cities with the largest population of the elderly in the EU). By utilising a structured questionnaire, the paper explores the satisfaction and motivations of approx. 600 elderly public transport users in the city. In particular, exploratory factor analysis has been used to determine the key dimensions of the satisfaction and mobility motivations, and subsequently to use them to investigate the cost sensitivity of elderly people.

The main objective of this paper is to analyze the informal support for the elderly experiencing problems in everyday life connected with physical, mental or emotional fitness. The analysis covers groups of countries chosen from the participants of SHARE project. The multinomial logit model has been used in order to verify the hypothesis that such problems determine the living arrangements of the elderly. The binomial regression model has been used in order to answer a question if informal support from outside the household obtained by the people experiencing problems in everyday life is determined by the type of the household and by social and demographic characteristics of the individuals receiving the support. In conclusion we state that the occurrence of difficulties in everyday life does not affect the chance of living in a one-person household. For the other types of the households the aforementioned influence turns out to be significant only for selected countries. In all investigated countries, for people experiencing difficulties in everyday life, a significant influence of the type of the household on receiving help from outside the household has been observed. In future research, a closer attention should be paid to elderly people living alone and to incorporating various types of limitations in everyday life separately for men and women. For better explanation of the differences between post-transitional and the other European countries the formal and institutional supports should be introduced.

The presented article concerns the phenomenon of infantilization of the elderly in many areas of everyday by their family carers. Infantilization means treating an adult like a child. In the sphere of language, this phenomenon is called baby-talk. Often infantilization of the elderly concerns the sphere of communication. The author of the article shows that not only during conversations they are treated as children. Family carers showed signs of infantilization, referring to the care and nursing of the elderly under their care. This article is an excerpt from a broader study of family carers for the elderly. The study was conducted with 20 carers of the elderly using the unstructured interview method in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship. The analysis of the research material was performed using the MAXQDA software. The result of a broad analysis is the research report presented in this study, which shows that infantilization is multidimensional and nonconscious. It results from the lack of preparation of the family carers for the role of a caregiver. Due to their insufficient knowledge about looking after an old person, the careres are forced to base their knowledge on their experience as parents.

The fact that people live longer indicates a necessity for studying the issue of physical activity of the elderly and disabled people. This review of researches reveals issues concerning physical activity of the elderly in Poland, and in other countries. Moreover, the study relates to the problem of physical activity among the elderly with disabilities. Researches show that this subject matter is present in the domestic studies relatively rarely. Results of surveys from other countries also concern issues of the elderly at around 80 years of age. The authors indicate the significant role of physical activity among the elderly, and the accompanying barriers.

In Europe, the population of people over 60 years old has increased dramatically in the last few decades. Due to the demographic changes, in Poland, the world of marketing seems to discover the purchasing power of the elderly. Seniors become not only the receivers but also the senders of advertising messages. In order to sell a product, ad makers present people who are supposed to be liked, trusted, identified with and finally followed. In a press advertisement, to which an average consumer devotes 1.5 seconds, the picture is of top priority. The present research aims at analyzing the image of elderly women in press advertisements on the basis of their physical appearance, the context of the depicted situation, their clothes, facial expressions, eye-contact, and other visible traits. The survey study was conducted among young people to see the difference in their perception of elderly women in the pictures illustrating press advertisements for different products. The research results show how the positive image of the elderly in advertising can be created.

Opis:
Oral diseases are the most common non-communicable diseases and affect people throughout their lifetime, causing pain, discomfort, disfigurement and even death. Some of the most common diseases that impact our oral health include tooth decay (cavities), gum (periodontal) and oral cancer. They are basically caused by poor brushing and flossing habits that allow plaque – a sticky film of bacteria to build up on the teeth and harden. The proportion of the older people continues to grow worldwide, especially in developing countries. Oral diseases among the elderly are fast becoming the leading cause of disability and mortality, and health and social policy-makers with face tremendous challenges posed by rapidly changing burden of chronic diseases in older people. In Nigeria today, oral health may not be perceived as a priority in older people’s care, and can easily be neglected while focusing on other conditions a patient may be living with. It is against this backdrop that this paper examines oral diseases with special reference to dental health problem among the elderly. It also looks at the possible causes and effects of oral diseases among the elderly in Nigeria. The paper, suggest ways to improve older people’s oral health in Nigeria.

Opis:
Background: Quality of life is a subject of research by representatives of various fields of science, including psychology, sociology, economics, and medicine. The results of some previous studies show that the quality of life of elderly people is related to their health behaviors. The aim of the study was to assess the relationships between the quality of life, considered in general and in detail, and health behaviors of healthy and ill elderly people from the Opolskie Voivodeship (Poland). Methods: 105 people (81 women and 24 men) participated in the study, including 61 patients and 44 healthy people, aged from 60 to 89 years. The average age of respondents was 71.2 ± 6.4 years. The main research method was the diagnostic questionnaire survey. The Health Behavior Inventory and R. Cummins's Comprehensive Quality of Life Scale were used. Results: The study results showed that the average value of the health behavior index in healthy respondents was significantly higher than in patients. The analysis of particular categories of health behaviors revealed that healthy persons declared normal eating habits more often than patients. The mean value of the general quality of life index was significantly higher in healthy respondents than in patients. Health status also significantly differentiated the quality of life in favor of healthy individuals in the domains of health and intimacy. In the analyzed group of respondents, health behaviors significantly determined the quality of life of patients only. The odds that the quality of life of patients are above average were greater in patients with average and higher health behavior indices than in patients with low health behavior indices. Conclusion: Measures of quality of life improvement should also be aimed at increasing the prevalence of health behaviors in the elderly.
