Loessification is a process by which a body of non-loess ground is transformed into a body of loess ground. The history of loessification is one of controversy and confrontation, largely because of mutual misunderstandings between geologists and pedologists. Lev S. Berg is the ‘only begetter’ of the theory, first proposed in 1916, and propagated throughout his life. R.J. Russell proposed the same approach to the loess in the Lower Mississippi valley in his famous 1944 paper, which contributed enormously to the study of loess in North America. As understanding of the various processes involved in the formation of loess deposits has developed, a compromise position on loess formation has become possible. The major intrinsic features of loess deposits are the open structure and the collapsibility. It appears that the open structure is caused by aeolian depositional processes and the collapsibility is caused by loessification processes. The compromise was initiated by Marton Pécsi in 1990, He endeavoured to retain a loessification aspect in the study of loess deposits, as the subject appeared to be overwhelmed by the aeolian idea system promoted by geologists; it has been mostly a Central European endeavour. The history of the concept of loessification largely involves (1) its development in Russia, (2) its dissemination and discussion – and attempts at refutation and modification – in the wider world.

Opis:
The influence of the particle size on the surface sensitivity in XPS analysis was investigated. Previous reports about such influence were qualitatively only. In this report there are given mathematical description of XPS sensitivity and quantitative results. It was found that influence due to nanometric size on XPS analysis can be noticeable for particles below 15 nm of diameter and increases dramatically with reduction of the size.

This article examines the Internet’s emergent role in the claims-making process. My central premise is while Internet technology provides lay citizens with a mass mediated platform to distribute claims publically, power dynamics in the public sphere have remained relatively stable: Insiders and lobbyists continue to be powerful cultural voices; the press still functions as a cultural gatekeeper of newsworthiness; most people continue to have relatively little social authority; and the least powerful risk being completely left out of a digital society. Using the National Rifle Association (NRA) web presence as a case study, I describe the Internet as a vast collection of interconnected public cyber-arenas where problem claims are continuously disseminated, global communication is facilitated via online advocacy networks, and claimants utilize novel cyber-strategies to mobilize supporters. In doing so, I examine how cyber-arenas fundamentally differ from more static traditional claims-making arenas like television, radio, and print publication. I conclude by considering the extent to which historically powerful insider claims-making groups like the NRA are actually best positioned to succeed in a supposedly democratized new media world.

Opis:
Fair translation is one that results in producing a target text that is likely to evoke a reaction similar to that elicited by the source text among its readers. The translator’s goal is to provide the readers of the translated version with the stimuli as close to that of the original as possible. To ensure that, the translator must be free to use every solution they find appropriate on micro- and macrolevel. Olejniczak-Skarsgård’s Polish translation of the young adult novel Wonder by R.J. Palacio is a good example of such rendition. A number of translation challenges was dealt with by very diverse translation strategies. Combining approaches resulted in a readable target text that has the potential to provoke the same reaction as the original. This analysis can be followed by empirical studies regarding young readers’ reception of paratextual additions.
Uczciwe tłumaczenie to takie, którego rezultatem jest tekst docelowy wywołujący u czytelników reakcję zbliżoną do tej powodowanej przez tekst wyjściowy. By temu podołać, tłumacz musi mieć możliwość wykorzystania dowolnych rozwiązań translacyjnych na poziomie jednostkowym i całościowym. Polskie tłumaczenie powieści dla młodzieży Wonder autorstwa R.J. Palacio opracowane przez Marię Olejniczak-Skarsgård jest tego dobrym przykładem. Pojawiające się w niej problemy translacyjne zostały rozwiązane dzięki różnym strategiom. Dzięki połączeniu rozmaitych rozwiązań powstał czytelny przekład, który daje możliwość zareagowania na opowieść i jej elementy tak jak czytelnicy oryginału. Przeprowadzona analiza daje podstawy do badań empirycznych dotyczących stosunku młodych odbiorców do paratekstów.

The identification of isometric displacements of studied objects with utilization of the vector product is the aim of the analysis conducted in this paper. Isometric transformations involve translation and rotation. The behaviour of distances between check points on the object in the first and second measurements is a necessary condition for the determination of such displacements. For every three check points about the measured coordinate, one can determine the vector orthogonal to the two neighbouring sides of the triangle that are treated as vectors, using the definition of the vector product in three-dimensional space. If vectors for these points in the first and second measurements are parallel to the studied object has not changed its position or experienced translation. If the termini of vectors formed from vector products treated as the vectors are orthogonal to certain axis, then the object has experienced rotation. The determination of planes symmetric to these vectors allows the axis of rotation of the object and the angle of rotation to be found. The changes of the value of the angle between the normal vectors obtained from the first and second measurements, by exclusion of the isometric transformation, are connected to the size of the changes of the coordinates of check points, that is, deformation of the object. This paper focuses mainly on the description of the procedure for determining the translation and rotation. The main attention was paid to the rotation, due to the new and unusual way in which it is determined. Mean errors of the determined parameters are often treated briefly, and this subject requires separate consideration.

The article gives a review of reasons for developing and adopting a new web-based model of teaching in the field of Instrumentation & Measurement. That is followed by a description of the Internet and multimedia - based educational model. Then follows a description of the structure and tools of the electronic books and Virtual Laboratory. The last chapter presents some details concerned to distance learning.

Opis:
The local chemical properties of bimetallic surfaces, which are often drastically different from those of each of the components, will be discussed. Using CO adsorption as a probe molecule it will be shown for two model systems, Au/Pd(111) and Pt/Ru(0001), that their chemical properties depend decisively on the local surface structure and that the correct interpretation of area integrating spectroscopic and kinetic data obtained from such surfaces requires detailed knowledge of their (defect) structure and of the distribution of the different components in the surface layer. It will further be shown that information on the local chemical properties of specific structural elements such as monolayer islands and monolayer island edges, and specific surface ensembles can be gained by applying high resolution scanning tunneling microscopy imaging and area integrating spectroscopic techniques in combination to bimetallic surfaces whose morphology and composition is varied in a systematic and controlled way. Based on experimental results adsorption on a monolayer A / substrate B system is suggested as a model for gaining information on the modifications in chemical properties of AB alloy surfaces due to metal-metal interactions.

The ways of calculating the length of the winding in the reinforced concrete poles with rectangular, circular and elliptical section were developed. This problem is quite generally described in literature and standard recommendations. The presented methods of calculation may be used in practice.

Opis:
The need for new, chemically and physically stable luminescent materials operating with UV excitations has stimulated research on luminescence properties of doped sol–gel material. In this work, it has been presented a technology of production of silica gels doped with organic molecules, lanthanide compounds and organic/inorganic composites. Optical properties of these materials as functions of temperature, concentration and excitation wavelength are presented. Dynamics of excited states has been discussed based on the decay times and emission efficiencies data. Mechanisms of ligand-to-metal energy transfer as well as other processes affecting emission efficiency are considered. Silica sol–gels doped with di-aminoacid derivatives of porphyrins: PP(Ser)2(Arg)2, PP(Ala)2(Arg)2, PP(Met)2(Arg)2, where Met, Arg and Ser denote methionine, serine and arginine aminoacids, respectively, and H2TTMePP {tetrakis[4-(trimethylammonio)phenyl]-21H,23H-porphine} have been obtained and spectroscopically studied. These materials can find applications as phosphors or sensors of UV irradiation.

The pyrokinin (PK) family plays a multifunctional role in an array of important physiological processes in a variety of insects. A PK active core analog containing an (E)-alkene, transPro isosteric component was evaluated in five disparate PK bioassays and/or in a recombinant PK receptor cell line, representing six different insect species. The assays included pheromone biosynthesis in the moth Heliothis peltigera, melanization in the larval Spodoptera littoralis, pupariation acceleration in the larval fly Neobellieria bullata, diapause termination in the moth Heliothis zea, and hindgut contraction in the cockroach Leucophaea maderae. This constrained analog demonstrated unselective agonist activity that approached, matched, or exceeded the activity of parent PK peptides of equal length in all six PK assays. The results provide strong evidence for the orientation of Pro and the core conformation adopted by PK neuropeptides during interaction with disparate PK receptors. A PK active core analog incorporating a second transPro motif, the dihydroimidazoline moiety, was found to demonstrate pure, selective agonism in the melanotropic bioassay, with no significant activity in three other PK bioassays. Both types of transPro isosteric analogs feature modification adjacent to the primary tissue-bound peptidase hydrolysis site that is expected to enhance biostability over natural PK peptides. The research further identifies two novel scaffolds with which to design either selective or non-selective mimetic PK analogs as potential leads in the development of environmentally favorable pest management agents capable of disrupting PK-regulated systems.

Ustalenie rodowodu J.R.R. Tolkiena wciąż pozostaje poważnym wyzwaniem dla badaczy jego życia i twórczości. Autorzy najważniejszych biografi i poprzestają zazwyczaj na opisaniu najbliższych, angielskich przodków pisarza, o kontynentalnych zaś, „saksońskich” korzeniach rodu jedynie wspominają. Ten tekst jest oryginalną próbą rekonstrukcji wcześniejszych dziejów rodziny Tolkienów, wywodzącej się – jak wynika z przedstawionych tu badań – z Gdańska oraz obszarów dawnych Prus Książęcych, Królewskich i Wschodnich (dla zachowania spójności wywodu autor posługuje się w całym tekście najpóźniejszą historycznie, ale łatwiej identyfi kowaną nazwą Prusy Wschodnie). Analiza dokumentów źródłowych, odnalezionych przez autora w archiwach Londynu, Gdańska i Krzyżborka (obecnie Sławskoje w obwodzie kaliningradzkim) pozwoliła na uzasadnione włączenie do drzewa genealogicznego twórcy Władcy Pierścieni postaci, których związków z Tolkienem albo wcześniej przekonująco nie dowiedziono, albo w ogóle nie badano. Są to: John Benjamin Tolkien, Daniel Gottlieb Tolkien, Christian Tolkien, Michael Tolkien i należący do najodleglejszy z potwierdzonych protoplastów, Friedrich Tolkien. Autor artykułu wskazuje także pruskie niegdyś miejscowości, które mogły być najstarszymi siedzibami rodu Tolkienów.
J. R. R. Tolkien’s (1892–1973) ancestry has been an obscure matter. From the official biographies of the famous Oxford professor and author we have known only about Tolkien’s great-grandparents and about the general direction of the Tolkien family’s migration in the eighteenth century described as „Saxony”. Ryszard Derdziński has found out J. R. R. Tolkien’s great-great-grandfather’s roots. Discovering crucial genealogical documents from London, Gdańsk (Poland) and Kreuzburg (East Prussia) ie. church records, a Parliament bill, newspaper news, entries in the books from that age etc. Derdziński has proved that John Benjamin Tolkien (1752–1719), J. R. R. Tolkien’s ancestor who lived and died in London and was a watch- and clockmaker, was born in Gdańsk in June 1752. His brother was Daniel Gottlieb Tolkien from London who also was born in Polish Gdańsk in July 1746. They emmigrated from Gdańsk to London in the years 1766–1772. Their father was Christian Tolkien (1706–1791), a craftsman from Gdańsk, brother of a Gdańsk furrier, Michael Tolkien (1708–1795). Both Christian and Michael were born in a little town Kreuzburg in East Prussia (now Slavskoye in Kaliningrad Oblast). Derdziński has found there at least four generations of this line of the Tolkien family and the fi rst known Tolkien from Kreuzburg was Friedrich Tolkien from 1614. The article shows also the genesis of the Tolkien family name and locates its beginning in the fourteenth century and a small village Tolkynen (today Tołkiny in Poland).
