Opis:
This study was designed to find the effects of two kinds of dust-free garments with (A) and without (B) frozen gel strip (FGS), and half-naked clothing (brassiere and shorts; C) on thermophysiological parameters and on temperature and humidity within clothing. The heart rate, rectal, and skin temperatures as well as sweat rate and clothing microclimate were measured during 140 min in 9 healthy females. Inquiries were also made into the subjective rating of thermal, humidity, and comfort sensations. The main findings in our experiments are as follows: (a) Physiological parameters such as rectal and skin temperatures (chest and forehead), heart rate, and sweat rate were clearly lowest in garb C, intermediate in garb A, and highest in garb B throughout the experiment; (b) Temperature and humidity within clothing were lower in garb A than in garb B; (c) More than half of the 9 participants decreased thermal sensation by wearing garb A. These results suggest that the usage of FGS could improve the heat load in lightly working participants wearing dust-free garments.

Opis:
The suitability of the IREQ (insulation required) index for predicting the thermal responses of 6 participants wearing chemical protective clothing was tested during exercise at -20 and -25 °C. IREQ was used to calculate duration limited exposure (DLE). Measured DLE correlated (r= .899, p < .001) with the predicted DLE. In exposures exceeding 40 min, however, the predicted DLE tended to be 10-20 min too short compared to the measured one. During short exposures the prediction was 5-20 min too long. The results show that IREQ overestimated the cold strain in participants wearing chemical protective clothing during cold exposures longer than 40 min. Nevertheless, predicted DLE never exceeded measured times and thus the prediction was always safe from the occupational point of view.

Opis:
This article is a review of research studies conducted in the Central Institute for Labour Protection (CIOP) on ergonomic aspects of personal protective equipment (PPE) design and use. Research was related to, among other things, a comparison of body strain and work time limitation for users wearing gas-tight and drill suits. Some other studies were connected with the biophysical properties of clothing materials for medical use. On the basis of the measurement results, a proposal of clothing construction with an optimum combination of protection and comfort was created. Research leading to the development of test methodology concerning automatic welding filters with switchable luminous transmittance is also conducted n CIOP. The article also brings up the subject of designing new PPE assuring a high level of comfort. A modei of material to be used under tight protective clothing, an inflammable harness for working at a height, and a model of intelligent clothing that will assist human thermoregulation processes during physical effort are examples of new PPE.

Zagrożenia związane z potrąceniem przez pojazdy samochodowe należą do najpoważniejszych, ze względu na ciężkość następstw. Jednym ze skutecznych sposobów zwiększenia bezpieczeństwa pieszych użytkowników dróg jest poprawa ich widzialności, przez zastosowanie odzieży ostrzegawczej. Zadaniem tego typu odzieży jest wizualne sygnalizowanie obecności jej użytkownika o każdej porze dnia oraz w ciemności przy oświetleniu światłami pojazdu, światłem latarek lub reflektorów, a także przy oświetleniu światłami ulicznymi na drogach miejskich. W artykule przedstawiono podstawowe wymagania dotyczące konstrukcji odzieży ostrzegawczej oraz właściwości fotometrycznych stosowanych materiałów.
Hazards connected with cars knocking down people are the most serious because of their consequences. An effective means of increasing pedestrians’ safety on roads is to improve their visibility. This can be achieved if they use high-visibility warning clothing. Such clothing can be used not only by workers (rescue services, maintenance staff) but also in non professional activities — by adults and children. The main task of the clothing is to provide a visual signal that its user is on the road, under any light conditions by day and in the dark under illumination from vehicles’ headlights or street lights. The article presents basic requirements for constructing high-visibility warning clothing and photometric properties of used materials.

W artykule omówiono podstawowe rodzaje manekinów termicznych i przykładowe ich zastosowania m.in. w sporcie i rekreacji, do badania palności odzieży, do oceny klimatu pomieszczeń, w tym także w pojazdach. Wskazano kierunki rozwoju konstrukcji manekinów termicznych, w najnowszej generacji istnieje możliwość matematycznego modelowania komfortu cieplnego człowieka w różnych warunkach środowiska.
Basic kinds of thermal manikins and their hypothetical applications are presented; for instance in sport and recreation, for studying flammability of clothing, for assessing indoor climate, including that in vehicles. Directions in the development of the construction of manikins are presented. In their latest generation, it is possible to mathematically model human thermal comfort in different environmental conditions.
