Budowana na szerokiej podstawie tożsamość regionalna jest powiązana z tymi wszystkimi cechami, które odróżniają jeden region od drugiego, a więc z jego środowiskiem naturalnym, dziejami, dziedzictwem kulturowym oraz specyfiką kultury jego mieszkańców, widoczną w formach językowych (dialekcie, specyficznych wyrażeniach, akcencie), tradycji, wzorach życia, dominujących wartościach. Możemy zatem sensownie mówić o przestrzeni regionalnej, historii regionalnej w jej obiektywnym i subiektywnym wymiarze świadomości historycznej i pamięci, o regionalnej społeczności, która byłaby czymś więcej niż statystyczną kategorią przypisaną do danego terytorium, i wreszcie o kulturze regionu. A zatem lokowana w ramach społecznie konstruowanych kategorii i będąca odpowiednikiem tożsamości indywidualnej tożsamość regionalna może być badana w odniesieniu do trzech wybranych płaszczyzn: po pierwsze – do terytorium, po drugie – do społeczności terytorium to zamieszkującej i jej cech specyficznych, po trzecie – do pamięci społecznej, w której w szczególny sposób ogniskują się problemy historii i kultury tejże społeczności. Rola tych czynników zależy od kontekstu; dla tożsamości Warmii i Mazur terytorium przekształcone w wartość krajobrazu odgrywa znaczącą rolę tak jeśli chodzi o postawy mieszkańców jak i postrzeganie regionu przez ludzi z zewnątrz; wyznacznikiem problemów społecznych nurtujących społeczność regionalną pozostają migracje, które stają się czynnikiem dekonstrukcji regionalnych struktur, ale mogą też stać się jednym z prorozwojowych dynamizmów, o ile wyjeżdżający w poszukiwaniu pracy i lepszych zarobków ludzie (zwłaszcza młodzi) wrócą i spróbują tutaj zainwestować uzyskane kapitały. I wreszcie rola pamięci, która uwolniona z ideologicznych ograniczeń miała określić wielokulturowy charakter regionu łączącego niemiecką historię i polską teraźniejszość w jedno symboliczne lokalne uniwersum.
Local identity is a multifaceted phenomenon originating from characteristic features which distinguish one region from another and mirror their different natural environment, as well as history, cultural heritage and the cultural singularities of the local population, manifested in their particular use of local language (dialect, vocabulary and intonation), tradition, patterns of behavior, everyday life and dominating value systems. It seems justifiable to assume the existence of a regional „home range”, a local history in its subjective and objective dimension of a collective mind and memory, and a local „native” populace, which in itself constitutes something more than the mere statistically collected data of a given area and local culture. Studying local identity we should focus on three aspects: firstly, on the territory itself in its geographical sense, secondly on the local community and its specific characteristics, thirdly on the collective memory, in which concentrate the singular historical and cultural issues of a given populace. The significance of these respective factors depends on the circumstances: the singular landscape and natural conditions of Warmia and Mazury are of significance as well for the selfperception of the local population as for the way people „from the outside” perceive this region. A main indicator for the crucial social issues the local population has to face today is migration, which, while on the one hand constituting one of the main deconstructive factors affecting regional structures, contributes significantly to the economic development of the region, as successful labor-migrants (predominantly young persons) come „back home” and attempt to invest their financial capital locally. Last not least the collective memory should be mentioned, which sets us free from ideological biases and accentuates the multi-cultural character of this region, linking German history with Polish actual reality and thus forming a symbolical local universe.

Na tle historycznym, uwzględniającym historię osadnictwa i kolejne reformy agrarne ukazano zebrane słownictwo w podziale na 6 kategorii – od bogatych właścicieli ziemskich po najuboższych, pozbawionych ziemi i własnego domu robotników folwarcznych. Podstawę materiałową stanowiły zapisy z badań gwarowych przeprowadzonych na Warmii i Mazurach w połowie XX w. oraz wybrane artykuły, wspomnienia i monografie.
The article presents over 100 names of farm owners and their employees in the dialects of Warmia and Mazury. The vocabulary is presented in 6 categories: from rich landowners to the poorest farm workers deprived of land and their own house, against a historical background and taking into account the history of settlement and the subsequent agrarian reforms. The material consists of records from dialectal research carried out in Warmia and Mazury in the mid-20th century as well as selected articles, memoirs and monographs.

Opis:
Ice sheet movement in northeastern Poland is reconstructed from analysis of the spatial orientation of glacial landforms and glaciotectonic deformations. The orientations of both positive and negative glacial landforms (morpholineaments) of the Vistulian Glaciation were analysed. These landforms form 4 sets and follow an original crevasse system (joint net) within the ice sheet, probably resulting from horizontal stress exerted as the ice advanced from the north. Esker deposits have been glaciotectonically deformed to form a compressional fan fold, due to limited movement of the ice sheet prior to deglaciation. This movement caused the ice crevasses to be tightened and cut by strike-slip faults. Movement here was from the NNW, as determined from the orientation of deformations. Thus, the ice-flow direction changed at least by 10° during the last phase of the Vistulian Glaciation. If the ice rotated the northeastern portion of the esker, this change may have amounted to 30°.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to present the most significant problems connected with the process of rebuilding the post-war transportation system in Warmia and Mazury. The system was one of the most important fields of the economy because it provided a basis for further reconstruction. It was essential for carrying out post-war territorial decisions connected with the relocation of the population, for example displacing Germans, relocating the people from the East or the process of settlement. The reconstruction of the transportation system was also necessary for the development of former East Prussia, a part of which was given to Poland by the new administrative authorities. For this reason, teams of railmen were the first to arrive to the territory of Warmia and Mazury. This article presents the destruction of the rolling stock and the participation of the Soviet soldiers in its further devastation. Moreover, the focus is placed on the stages of the reconstruction of the railways and rail connections. Apart from that, substantial attention is devoted to the reconstruction of the road system. The article describes the difficulties in obtaining cars and motorcycles, caused by the fact that most of such vehicles were only to be used by the local authorities. Furthermore, the article presents the development of the passenger road transport network. Attempts have been made not only to reconstruct the timetables and describe the changes in ticket prices, but also to present the difficulties such as the lack of punctuality or limited driving comfort. The article is supplemented with data regarding the number of passengers of the aforementioned forms of transport. Additionally, the information about the alternative methods of travelling during the first five years after the Second World War have been provided.

W świetle zachowanych źródeł, jak i dotychczasowego stanu wiedzy na ten temat obecnie raczej trudno już obronić tezę o „wyzwoleniu” w 1945 r. Prus Wschodnich przez Armię Czerwoną. Dzisiaj brzmi ona absurdalnie zwłaszcza, że w okresie rządów komunistycznych twierdzenie to miało czysto propagandowy charakter. Warto też przypomnieć, że po wojnie blisko połowa terytorium Polski została zagarnięta i wcielona do Związku Sowieckiego, a zamieszkująca od wieków te ziemie ludność polska w praktyce zmuszona do opuszczenia swoich ojczystych stron, które zostały odcięte od macierzy. Należy też podkreślić liczne przypadki gwałtów i przestępstw dokonywanych przez żołnierzy sowieckich, które wywierały destabilizujący wpływ zarówno na przebieg akcji osadniczej, jak i stan bezpieczeństwa na tych terenach. Z kolei rabunki i grabieże, nie tylko znacząco powiększały skalę zniszczeń, ale również w istotny sposób powodowały straty finansowe i tym samym znacznie utrudniły powojenną odbudowę gospodarczą Warmii i Mazur.
In the light of preserved literary sources and the existing knowledge, it would be difficult to further advance the thesis that in 1945 the territory of East Prussia was „liberated” by the Red Army. The above thesis appears absurd today, and during the communist era the term was used purely for propaganda purposes. It should be stressed that after the Second World War, nearly half of the Polish territory was annexed and incorporated into the Soviet Union, and the Poles who had been living there for centuries were forced to leave their homeland which was cut off from the main part of Poland. Particular attention should be paid to a wave of rapes and robberies committed by Soviet soldiers, which had a destabilizing effect on both the settlement process and public safety. Plunder and theft increased the size of war damage and caused considerable financial losses, thus hindering the rebuilding of war-torn Warmia and Mazury.

Na podstawie analizy akt polskiej administracji cywilnej, a także Wojewódzkiego Urzędu Bezpieczeństwa Publicznego opisano działania wojsk sowieckich prowadzące do znaczącego uszczuplenia majątku rolnego Warmii i Mazur, co w poważnym stopniu utrudniło powojenne osadnictwo, odbudowę i zagospodarowanie tych obszarów, na których rolnictwo było podstawową gałęzią gospodarczą.
This article presents the process of destruction of villages in Warmia and Mazury after World War II, plundered and devastated by Soviet troops. Basing on a thorough analysis of the Polish civil administration and the Provincial Office of Public Security files, the author describes the plunders of Soviet soldiers that contributed to a significant depletion of the agricultural property of Warmia and Mazury. This seriously hampered the post-war settlement, reconstruction and development of these areas, where agriculture was the primary economic branch.

Opis:
The specificity of the Warmia and Mazury region, a unique cultural mosaic paired with social problems, provided a space for building social engagement in the environment by involving the local community in socio-cultural activities. These actions resulted in changes to the living environment of individuals and social groups through their participation and engagement. The aim of the article is to present the results of research showing the views of animators regarding the impact of implemented social and cultural projects on stimulating social forces in small towns and villages of Warmia and Mazury. The research findings presented in the following section show the important aspects of this activity, starting from the sources/motives of creating projects and incorporating environmental resources into them, through cooperation with the local community and creating environmental leaders, to assessing the changes taking place as a result of the implemented projects. The presented research results allow for the conclusion that animators, through their project activities, contributed to permanent, positive changes in the local environment, awakening social forces (open and hidden), and to an increase in socio-cultural activity, both during and after the project activities.

Opis:
Society of Fighters for Freedom and Democracy was formed in 1949 as a merger of almost all previously existing veterans’ associations. At the regional level, the most important element of the Association was the regional board and the superordinate bodies were poviate boards and clubs. Within the Regional Board there were merit-based commissions (e.g. verification, propaganda, health, medals, social), and after 1956 - also the so-called social group commissions (e.g. political prisoners, participants of revolution fights, fighters for the independence of Warmia and Mazury). In the years 1949-1956, the Association was in fact only a tool of political indoctrination and was strictly governed by political authorities that aimed at liquidating the Association. After 1956, the Association became totally independent and the veterans were given a limited possibility of postulating, mainly in social matters. The condition for being a member of the Association was loyalty towards the communist state.

Zawarliśmy też listę „zaleceń dobrej praktyki”, której wypełnianie ma służyć maksymalizacji wykorzystania rodzimych drzewostanów przez środowiska zainteresowane prowadzeniem silvoterapii.
In this article we try to put in order the facts and separate them from the myths related to more or less varied forms of therapy situated within the category of ‘silvotherapy’. We also try to estimate the possibilities of applying the silvotherapy under the Warmia-Mazury regional conditions, associating it with the objectives of national and international tourism. After all, in the context of conducting the silvotherapy, we positively assess the usefulness of forest stands in the region and propose a list of ‘principles of good practice’, which is designed to maximize the use of native forest stands by local groups interested in ‘silvotherapy’.

Przeprowadzono analizę uwarunkowań środowiskowych konkurencyjności rolnictwa w woj. warmińsko-mazurskim. Do analiz wykorzystano dane GUS (bank danych regionalnych) oraz dane ARiMR. Duże zróżnicowanie warunków przyrodniczych w odniesieniu do mniejszych jednostek terytorialnych wskazuje na potrzebę większego zróżnicowania ścieżek rozwoju rolnictwa dostosowanych do warunków i zasobów środowiskowych.
The aim of this article is to analyze environmental conditions of agriculture competitiveness in Warmia and Masury province. A comparatative analysis was conducted using the GUS statistical data and data of Agency for Agriculture Restructuring and Modernisation. Big disparity of natural condition indicates necessity to take decission in smaller administrative district. It help to suuport development of organic and sustainable agriculture on areas of the best environmental conditions.

Opis:
The communist regime after 1947 tried to divide the Lutheran community in Warmia and Mazury. This was to be achieved by arousing suspicion that the members of that Church were spies on behalf of various Western countries, especially the Scandinavian ones, as the Lutheran Church in Poland maintained vivid contacts with them. At the same time the Lutheran community was seen as pro-German and the clergy were accused of collaboration with the Germans in the times of World War II. They were blamed for the failure of the forced polonisation of the German population, which decided to stay in Poland after the war. In effect two Lutheran priests and several laymen were arrested. The authorities failed to prove the accusations of espionage and the priests and laymen were not sentenced, but they were not fully acquitted before 1957.

It was the aim of the study to register and analyze manuscripts and prints written in the Cyrillic which have been collected in Warmia and Mazury. The article describes written monuments from the collections of libraries in Olsztyn: the library in Warmia and Mazury Seminary Hosianum (parchment leaves from the 14th century), University of Warmia and Mazury Library (manuscript Swiatcy from 1848), and Museum of Warmia and Mazury Library (two copies of the Lvov publication of the Ałtar Gospel Book from 1897), as well as the municipal and regional libraries (Monthły Menaion for October printed in Moscow in 1750) and a private collection (the Altar Gospel Book from 1815 printed in Poczajów. A volume of Służebnik (Wilno-Supraśl, 1692-1695) is in the possession of a Greek-Catholic parishioner from Giżycko. Additionally, volumes from the Old Believers’ monastery and Orthodox church in Wojnowo were described. Courtesy of their owners, the study is based also on manuscripts and prints which belong to the Old Believers from Ukta, Wojnowo, Ruciane-Nida and Piaski. The guardian of the Old Believers Monastery of Saviour and Holy Trinity allowed the author to photograph and describe the manuscripts and prints which have not been so far academically analysed. They are now stored in the Digital Library of the University of Warmia and Mazury thanks to a project financed by the National Science Centre. The described volumes, mainly liturgical in their character, served the needs of Christians in the east: Orthodox Christians, Old Believers and Greek-Catholics.

The aim of this article was to determine the growth and development of the Mazurian population of red deer (Cervus elaphus L.) on the basis of morphological parameters of antlers. Data from measurements of stags harvested in the Olsztyn Province during three hunting seasons 1988/1989, 1989/1990 and 1990/1991 were taken for analyses. The sampled group contained selective, shootable and prospective stags. Stags from the last two groups formed the class of strong stags, i.e. stags with antlers developed above the standard for a given age being the basic material for this study.

Aby uzyskać odpowiedź na pytanie, czy lokalne władze samorządowe podejmują działania wpierające rolników w tworzeniu gospodarstw agroturystycznych oraz tworzą sprzyjające warunki do rozwoju agroturystyki, przeanalizowano strategie rozwoju gmin Warmii i Mazur.
Agrotourism becomes an important branch of tourism. Recently we can observe increase of demand for this form of tourism, which allow to take advantages of natural environment, production and services of the countryside. To answer the question, if local authorities take an action to support inhabitants in creation of agricultural tourism infrastructure, there were analyzed development strategies carried out by local government in Warmia and Mazury communities.

Opis:
The relations between the prosecutors in Olsztyn’s Court of Appeal to information deriving from the public administration, are an interesting source for understanding socio-economic and political development in the first years after the War in Warmia and Mazury. This article presents the activities of the militia from Olsztyn province and several counties belonging to the province of Białystok. The opinion of the prosecutors of Olsztyn’s Court of Appeal concerning the attitudes of officers, their morale, level of education and training for service are presented. Alongside the opinions of the prosecutors concerning the functionaries, especially from the investigate division, the outlook of judges regarding the activities of the militiamen and their mistakes is presented.
