THE DIFFICULTIES ASSOCIATED WITH BUDDHA’S FIRST SERMONBuddhism means different things to different people: it is regarded as an outlook, faith, (unspecified) direction... etc. Regardless of the above interpretative differences, one may try to evaluate it, and here the issues of truth and consequently that of philosophy, belong to the most important ones. The question concerning coherence and lack of contradiction of both the outlook and the guidelines relating to man’s conduct which are based upon it, may sometimes become an important cause for evaluation of at least the validity of some of the assumptions making up a given view. The verifiability or refutability of a professed view may encourage one to accept it or not, still before one decides to evaluate its authenticity. This relates especially to the most fundamental instructions concerning one’s way of life. For, one should not simply accept the faith of one’s ancestors in the form they professed it; nor should one accept some assumptions, simply because they impress one with their innovatory approach, or else because they seem to reveal some new fragment of reality. In spite of the fact that Gautama’s first sermon, which appears to be most fundamental to Buddhism, was supposed to convince Buddha’s supporters to the “Way of the Middle”, it seems to be full of ambiguities and major difficulties. The sermon does not shed sufficient light on those shortcomings which the new “way” is to remove, nor does it justify their origin. What is more, the author of the sermon does not define precisely enough the newly assigned goals, nor does he justify the effectiveness of the recommended methods of attaining them

The subject of this article is a problem of toxic preaching. It was analyzed most of all on the ground of the opinions about Sunday sermons. Toxic sermons was considered in a twofold aspect. First it were composed objections to Sunday preaching, and then were analyzed a several themes which have toxic influence on the listeners of Sunday sermons: image and concept of God, Christian eschatology, suffering, will of God, concept of the Church, ecclesiastical teaching and freedom, sexual and marital moral and politic. The conclusion is that there is necessary to take into consideration rules of interpersonal communication rules and reliable theology by preachers.

The crisis of modern culture manifests itself in multiple forms. An important source of new global spiritual threats in the world is a crisis of civilization. The crisis of truth, which is expressed by the crisis of science, ideology and faith, has caused existential emptiness and anxiety. The term “irrational stupidity” has appeared in publications as an expression of general trends of the late twentieth century civilization. A civilization was developing which was simulated by imagination and illusion, a civilization detached from the truth, where a concocted man is first while the living one is far behind. In this situation appeared the term “culture of idiots” – one of the models. Another model of culture is often illustrated by the myth of the nymph Echo (punished so that she had lost her own voice and could only repeat) and the myth of Narcissus (in love with his own reflection). It is reflected by the theater dominated by a monologue (one-man show), visual arts with various types of exhibitionist self-portraying; literature dominated by autobiography and memoir rather than a story, in other plays – “monadizm” or forcing men to portray men, blacks – to imagine the blacks, etc., in philosophy – extreme relativism, on the border of solipsism (the denial that there may be truth beyond our own thoughts). In the religious life its expression are sects – justifying atomism of an individual, their closing on the environment, hiding man, and life – with superficial sensibility (“autistic”). Treating one’s own religion as the next “segment” of life, which can be easily “replaced” for another, makes it impossible to remain in Christian culture. Every love, including Christian, is associated with fidelity, which results in dedication, sometimes bordering on heroic. In the “culture of change” this important attribute of faith disappears, subject to market valuation – it is becoming one of the international market offers today. And in a culture of destruction there is no place for positive building – the national and Christian culture is subject to disintegration and suspicion. Fidelity is treated as a negation of the total “opening up” to the world – including the evil and destructive forces, which completely changes the perspective of culture.

The writer provides there both historical information (capture of Kazan by Ivan IV in 1552), and also geographic, ethnographic and sociologic information.

Among the most important problems of the modern preaching we can list: – Phonetic problems – Expansion of colloquial language in preaching – Domination of theological jargon in preaching. Every preacher should remember that the mastery in the use of the spoken and written language is essential to be a success, not only in the communication but, what even more important, in the educational fi eld. Th e permanent development and actualization of preacher knowledge in the fi eld of linguistic seems to be indispensable to reach this mastery. It is even more important since the improvement in the fi eld of preaching is always combined with the development of the spiritual life of the preacher.

In the work on Polish dialectisms contained in the manuscripts of the beginning of the 14th century Maria Bargieł included Augustine Sermons into Little Poland monuments, although she gave no arguments motivating this localization. In this paper the author presents some facts which make it impossible to include those manuscripts within the monuments from Little Poland, and quotes some phenomena which provide grounds to localize the language of the Sermons in time and space. We find here: 1. the Mazury speech, 2. hard ky gy, ke (dat. and acc. sing. masc. and neutr.), 5. the prepositions w and z before the words with initial w- and z- (there is no pronunciation we wodzie ze sokiem). We have to add here two of those mentioned by M. Bargieł: 6. nasal vowels, short and long, with synchronous nasality (marked by the letter ą, rarely the letter a) and 7. the pronoun się (no records with mię and cię) with nasality with both verbs and after the preposition za (there is only zasię). The phenomena, whose existence in the Sermons may be questioned, are the following: 8. the pronunciation of śfąty (with the nasal a), śfat, ćferć etc., 9. a tendency to shift from y to i, and along with it 10. the pronunciation of li as ly, e.g. malyna, Lublyn, and 11. the ending instr. plur. -my (aside to -mi), e.g. nogamy (aside to nogami). The above phenomena occur in the Masovian monuments (and in today local dialects). The writer of the Sermons came from Masovia, strictly speaking that part of Masovia situated east of the Vistula. The Sermons were written in the second half of the 15th century, most certainly right before its end. The writer preserved the old difference between the instrumental and the locative singular in masculine declinations and neutral pronouns and adjectives; this difference is rarely recorded in the 16th-century texts. As to the late occurrence of the accusative form go in the Warsaw records: they could have been used by the court scribe as late as 1494. The preacher, however, who dealt with a careful, artistic language - since the language of sermons should be regarded as such - undoubtedly knew that literary form much earlier. The monument distinguishes itself with a very careful spelling, rarely encountered in the fifteenth century.

In an attempt to describe an individual realization of the sermon as a genre pattem, the article characterizes a collection of a few dozen sermons delivered by one preacher. In accordance with the conventions typical of altemating pattems, i.e. modifications of individual components of the canonical pattem, the preacher uses above all the mechanism ofreduction. He omits the classic introduction, uses only argumentative schemata in the main bodies of his sermons, and formulates the ending as a conclusion or an appeal. It appears as important for the author to differentiate individual segments of the whole and arrange them in such a way so as to achieve persuasive effects. The preacher assumes the role of an interpreter of the w ord of God, and constructs his sermons in the form of intemally dialogized monologues. The choice of stylistic devices is dictated above all by the principle of appropriateness. The preacher avoids bombastic and official forms, uses religious or colloąuial lexis in order to render the transfer of message more vivid, imagelike and suggestive. Taking into account the basie features of the altemating pattem of the sermon as a genre, the said author attempts to speak from his own perspective, but in sucha way as to preserve the message of God.

W latach 2012–2019 w ramach dwóch konkursów finansowanych z Narodowego Programu Rozwoju Humanistyki (NPRH) wydano 7 obszernych tomów antologii kazań. To „monumentalne dzieło” (prof. Alina Nowicka-Jeżowa, UW) mieści na ponad czterech tysiącach stron teksty kazań zarówno znanych i docenionych kaznodziejów, jak i mówców minorum gentium, komentarz naukowy do nich oraz aparat krytyczny. Seria, której wspólny tytuł brzmi: Kazania w kulturze polskiej. Edycje kolekcji tematycznych, „wyrasta powoli na jedną z najważniejszych w polskiej humanistyce XXI wieku” (prof. Roman Mazurkiewicz, UP). Po latach zaniedbań zespół badawczy projektu podjął na nowo szeroko zakrojone prace nad tym ogromnym i nierozpoznanym dotychczas zasobem źródeł, jakim są kazania. Artykuł przestawia stan badań nad dziejami kaznodziejstwa polskiego, założenia projektu Kazania w kulturze polskiej i uczestniczące w nim zespoły badawcze, kryteria doboru tekstów kazań, osiągnięcia w realizacji projektu oraz uwagi krytyczne wskazane przez recenzentów.
In the years 2012–2019, as part of two competitions financed by the National Program for the Development of Humanities (NPRH), 7 extensive volumes of an anthology of sermons were published. This „monumental work” (prof. Alina Nowicka-Jeżowa, University of Warsaw) contains on over four thousand pages the texts of sermons of both well-known and appreciated preachers and speakers of minorum gentium, a scientific commentary on them and a critical apparatus. A series with a joint title is: Kazania w kulturze polskiej. Edycje kolekcji tematycznych (Sermons in Polish Culture. Editions of thematic collections) „is slowly growing into one of the most important in the Polish humanities of the 21st century” (prof. Roman Mazurkiewicz, Pedagogical University). After years of neglect, the project’s research team resumed extensive work on this vast and hitherto unknown resource of sermons. The article presents the state of research on the history of Polish preaching, the assumptions of Kazania w kulturze polskiej (Sermons in Polish Culture) and the research teams participating in it, the criteria for selecting the texts of sermons, achievements in the project implementation and critical comments indicated by the reviewers.

Niniejszy artykuł poświęcono przejawom patriotyzmu w nauczaniu (homilie, kazania, wystąpienia okolicznościowe z lat 1986-1994) księdza infułata Stanisława Jeża, który przez 30 lat (od 1985 do 2015 roku) pełnił funkcję rektora Polskiej Misji Katolickiej we Francji, zebranym w publikacji pt. My jesteśmy czasem. Kazania i homilie, wydanej w 1995 roku w Paryżu przez Polską Misję Katolicką we Francji. Autorzy artykułu skupili się na przejawach miłości do Ojczyzny i rodaków, troski o nich w omawianych kazaniach księdza S. Jeża. Omawiając różnorodność tych przejawów, skoncentrowali się na prezentacji sposobów „przemycania” przez kaznodzieję w jego kazaniach myśli patriotycznych poprzez: wykorzystanie wydarzeń historycznych ważnych dla Polski i Polaków, świętowanie rocznic i jubileuszy, odnoszenie się do aktualnych wydarzeń w Ojczyźnie, świętowanie istotnych wydarzeń dla społeczności polonijnej (jubileusze posługi, rocznice istnienia ważnych instytucji), powoływanie się na postawę życiową i nauczanie Ojca Świętego Jana Pawła II, przywoływanie wzorów postaw życiowych polskich świętych, przypominanie postaw i słów wybitnych Polaków, cytowanie fragmentów dzieł znakomitych polskich twórców, artykułowanie troski o zachowanie kultury i tradycji polskiej na emigracji, solidarność oraz wspólnotę emigrantów.
This article is devoted to the manifestations of patriotism in the teachings (homilies, sermons, occasional speeches in the years 1986-1994) of Rev Stanisław Jeż, protonotary apostolic, who for 30 years (from 1985 to 2015) had been the rector of the Polish Catholic Mission in France. His teachings were collected in the publication entitled My jesteśmy czasem. Kazania i homilie [We are the time. Sermons and homilies], published in Paris in 1995 by the Polish Catholic Mission in France. The article focuses on the manifestations of love for the Homeland and compatriots and concern for them in the sermons of Rev S. Jeż. While discussing the diversity of these manifestations, the article focuses on presenting the ways of “smuggling” patriotic thoughts in his sermons through: the use of historical events important for Poland and Poles, celebrating anniversaries and jubilees, reference to current events in Homeland, celebrating significant events for the Polish community abroad (jubilees of service, anniversaries of important institutions), reference to the life and teaching of the Holy Father John Paul II, recalling the models of life of Polish saints, recalling the characters and the words of eminent Poles, quoting excerpts from the works of outstanding Polish artists, voicing concern for the preservation of Polish culture and tradition in emigration, solidarity and the community of emigrants.

In Kazania gnieźnieńskie, dem Sprachdenkmal aus dem 15. Jahrhundert, treffen wir Formen vom Typ krolefniy, paniy an. Die Funktion des Zeichens iy, das ausschließlich im Auslaut steht, bleibt ein Rätsel. Den Untersuchungen von W. Cyran zufolge (Ślady iloczasu w głównych zabytkach języka polskiego XIV i XV wieku) wird auf diese Weise nicht die Vokallänge angezeigt, wie man ursprünglich angenommen hat (vgl. Lehr-Spławinski). Weil wir hier mit einem Sprachdenkmal aus Großpolen zu tun haben, drängt sich die Vermutung auf, daß es sich um diphtongische Aussprache des auslautenden i, y handelt. Drei Tatsachen sprechen für die hier gestellte Hypothese: 1. Schon im 16. Jahrhundert finden wir bei großpolnischen Schriftstellern hyperkorrekte Schreibweise, was folglich erlaubt, die Diphtongierung früher als ins 16. Jh. zu verlegen. 2. Die Schreibweise dobrziy, iáciy wird im Posener Druck vom 1582 bestätigt. 3. Auch im Polabischen erfolgte im 14./15. Jh. ein analoger Diphtongierungsprozeß von i, y.

The article refers to the Good Friday sermon (Raj niebieski na ziemi, potopem złości i okrucieństwa żydowskiego zniesiony […], 1655) by baroque preacher, Mikołaj Szomowski. It is the only known sermon by this author. The paper discusses how the preacher read and used works of ancient Roman writers (Valerius Maximus, Plutarchus, Pliny the Elder, Seneca, Vergil, Martial, Ovid). The author of this article investigates the purpose of the citations, their interpretation and adaptation for the Christian context. These excerptions show Szomowski’s erudition and — indirectly — the character of baroque education and preaching, which were based on ancient rhetoric, poetics and literature. The problem with Szomowski’s interpretation of ancient authors lies, however, in the fact that quotations from Roman literature are used for a biblical exegesis and are just as important as the Bible. Perhaps it was the reason why Szomowski published only the one sermon.
