    The impressive factual content of the Historical Atlas of Poland. Detailed Maps of the 16th Century is the subject of reflection around the thesis that this Atlas is a fundamental work of Polish historical cartography. The thesis is based on the fact that an all-encompassing work has been produced, published in print and in the form of a digital source base. The extraordinariness of the work on the Atlas consists in the fact that the work is carried out by successive generations of researchers with full respect for the ideas of the originators. The digital form has naturally increased the availability of the content of the Atlas and facilitated access to historical sources. AtlasFontium.pl, as a WebGIS application, is cross-territorial and accessible without time limits.

    W artykule przedstawiono koncepcję i program prac nad atlasem historycznym Rusi Czerwonej w drugiej połowie XVI w. Ta dzielnica Korony nie została objęta Atlasem historycznym Polski, którego edycja została właśnie zakończona i wypełniła zakres terytorialny wyznaczony w 1964 r. Rozpoczęty w 2022 r. projekt „Atlasu Rusi Czerwonej” jest rozwinięciem dotychczasowego opracowania. Wspiera się on na podobnych założeniach, uwzględnia jednak potrzebę modyfikacji wynikających ze specyfiki regionu. Szczegółowo został omówiony plan pierwszego etapu prac, których rezultatem będą mapy sześciu ziem składających się na Ruś Czerwoną, opublikowane w witrynie internetowej w aplikacji web-GIS, a także bazy danych oraz edycje źródłowe.
    The paper presents the concept and work programme for the Historical Atlas of Red Ruthenia in the second half of the sixteenth century. This region of the Crown was not covered by the Historical Atlas of Poland, the edition of which has just been completed, encompassing the territorial scope defined in 1964. The project of the Atlas of Red Ruthenia (now within the boundaries of Ukraine and Poland), launched in 2022, is an extension of the work already done. It is based on similar guidelines but considers the need for modifications due to the region's specificities. The plan for the first stage of the research has been discussed in detail. It will result in maps of the six lands that make up Red Ruthenia, which will be published on the website in a web-GIS application, as well as databases and source editions.

    Celem artykułu jest prześledzenie ewolucji koncepcji Atlasu historycznego Polski, a w szczególności roli szacunków liczby i struktury populacji w drugiej połowie XVI w. na mapach i w komentarzach w kolejnych tomach serii. Oparcie badań nad osadnictwem na rejestrach podatkowych dało szansę na rekonstrukcje demograficzne, które zostały wykonane dla dwóch regionów Polski: województwa płockiego i Prus Królewskich. Zmieniony w 1964 r. model prac nad atlasami zminimalizował znaczenie demografii historycznej, ograniczając jej rolę do pogrupowania osad według ich wielkości.
    The article aims to trace the evolution of the concept of the Historical Atlas of Poland and, in particular, the role of estimates of the size and structure of the population in the second half of the sixteenth century on maps and in comments in the subsequent volumes of the series. Basing the study of settlements on tax registers provided an opportunity for demographic reconstructions, which were made for two regions of Poland: the Płock Voivodeship and Royal Prussia. The model of working on the atlases was changed in 1964, and minimised the importance of historical demography, limiting its role to grouping settlements according to their size.

    This article presents the relationship between two monumental series developed at the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences – the Historical Atlas of Poland and the Historical-Geographical Dictionary of the Polish Lands in the Middle Ages. From this perspective, the author presents the idea of their development, conceptual assumptions and the history of institutional relations. A separate part is devoted to analysing the use of the Atlas in the compilation of the Dictionary, focusing on the volumes devoted to Mazovia.

    Koncepcja Atlasu polskiego podziemia niepodległościowego 1944-1956 powstała w Oddziałowym Biurze Edukacji Publicznej Instytutu Pamięci Narodowej w Lublinie, a założenia merytoryczne i metodyczne kartograficznej części publikacji zostały przygotowane przy współpracy pracowników naukowych Zakładu Kartografii Uniwersytetu Marii Curie Skłodowskiej w Lublinie. Celem autorów, redaktorów i kartografów było opracowanie atlasu, będącego wartościowym źródłem informacji i analiz zarówno dla zawodowych badaczy naukowców, jak i dla miłośników historii. Atlas powinien także służyć jako pomoc dydaktyczna.
    The concept of Atlas of Independence Underground in Poland 1944-1956 was created in the Regional Office of Public Education of the Institute of National Remembrance in Lublin, with the methodological assumptions of the cartographic part of the publication being prepared with the cooperation of the scientific staff of the Department of Cartography of Maria Skłodowska-Curie University in Lublin. The aim of the authors, editors and cartographers was to prepare an atlas, which would be a valuable source of information and analyses for both professional researchers and history lovers. The Atlas should also serve as an educational tool. The Atlas is a single volume consisting of three thematically-chronological parts. The primary, cartographic part is divided into four groups. The first group includes maps presenting structures of the under- ground resistance on a national level, from January 1944 to December 1956. The second important group consists of maps showing particular topics in regional approach, divided into voivodships. The third group presents three sheets of maps of Poland showing quantitative characteristics. The last group is a map of Poland presenting other conspiracy organizations. The Atlas uses cartographic source materials from the time preceding the outbreak of the World War II and from the post war times. The contents of source maps in 1:500 000, 1:1 000 000, and 1:2 000 000 was generalized accordingly. Maps of voivodships were prepared mostly in three basic scales of 1:1 000 000, 1:500 000 and 1:2 000 000. Maps of Poland were prepared in 1:4 000 000 and 1:7 000 000. The result of five years' work of the team of 55 historians and 11 cartographers was an impressive publication of 660 pages, 399 maps, thousands of facts and about a thousand iconographic materials.

    The article characterises the content pertaining to religious structures and their presentation methods in the Historical Atlas of Poland (AHP) programme. It also presents the paths of the AHP development, shaped by discussions around the role of historical cartography and socio-religious history, which influenced how religious issues were treated in the AHP programme and publishing series.

    Od początku istnienia Katedry Geografii Politycznej i Studiów Regionalnych prowadzone są w niej studia nad stworzeniem „Atlasu przemian politycznych na świecie w XX wieku”, rozszerzone w ostatnich latach również na pierwsze dekady wieku XXI. Zgromadzone doświadczenie pozwala dokonać przeglądu przyjętej metodyki oraz omówić trudności i bariery z nią związane, występujące w toku zarówno gromadzenia materiału faktograficznego, jak i jego przetworzenia i prezentacji, tak w postaci tekstowej, jak i kartograficznej. W artykule, na podstawie własnych doświadczeń empirycznych, omówiono niektóre aspekty procesu przeprowadzania kwerend faktograficznych, krytycznej oceny wartości pozyskanych informacji, wiarygodności źródeł, trudności związanych z obowiązującymi w różnych częściach świata systemami pomiaru powierzchni oraz odmiennymi sposobami rachuby czasu (kalendarzami). Podjęto analizę rangi dokumentów uchwalanych w tej samej sprawie przez różne instytucje sprawcze, przy uwzględnieniu odmienności ustrojowych w poszczególnych państwach i okresach historycznych. Dokonano krytycznej analizy dostępnych źródeł, ukazując zarazem zmienność dostępności do nich wynikającą z postępu cywilizacyjnego, który nastąpił od czasu podjęcia badań nad „Atlasem” w końcu lat 70. XX wieku. Odniesiono się także do kwestii związanych z procesem prezentacji kartograficznej zmian politycznych w całej ich złożoności, podejmując krytykę niektórych już wydanych atlasów historycznych i wskazując na dobre i złe metody przedstawiania zjawisk na mapie, które mogą być zastosowane w przyszłej publikacji opracowywanego „Atlasu”. Czas, który upłynął od podjęcia studiów nad Atlasem, przyniósł w tej dziedzinie wiele nowoczesnych rozwiązań, które można dziś z powodzeniem zastosować, łącznie z rezygnacją z tradycyjnej drukowanej formy edycji i zastosowaniem formy elektronicznej, w której możliwa jest do uzyskania ruchomość obrazu. Rozważania zilustrowano konkretnymi przykładami opartymi na uzyskanych już wynikach badań i ich dotychczasowej (jakkolwiek w ograniczonej formie) prezentacji.
    Since the very beginning of the Department of Political Geography and Regional Studies the study of the creation of the “Atlas of political changes in the World in the 20th century” are conducted, expanded in recent years, also for the first decade of the 21st c. Accumulated experience allows us to revise the used methodology and the difficulties and barriers related thereto occurring during both the accumulation of factual material and its processing and forms of presentation both in text form and cartographic. The article based on own empirical experience discusses some aspects of the process of performing factual queries, critical appraisal of the value of the obtained information, the reliability of sources, difficulties associated with surface measurement systems existing in different parts of the world and different calendars. Author analyzed the rank of documents enacted in the same case by different institutions taking into account the political differences in individual countries and historical periods. There have been critical analysis of available resources and their variable availability resulting from the progress of civilization, which occurred since starting research on “Atlas” in the late 70s. Issues related to the process of cartographic presentation of political change in all their complexity were discussed, taking criticism already issued some historical atlases and pointing out the good and bad methods of presenting phenomena on the map that can be used in future publications of the “Atlas”.

    Rozwój Internetu stał się poważnym wyzwaniem dla wydawców i autorów publikacji drukowanych. Jednak pomimo obaw związanych z tym nowym medium oraz z przyszłością druku, istnieją możliwości wykorzystania obydwu form edycji, które poprzez odpowiednie dopasowanie treści do danego medium zwiększają atrakcyjność produktu. Przykładem takiej hybrydowej publikacji jest Historyczno-topograficzny atlas miast śląskich, którego wydanie drukowane zawiera obszerniejsze teksty o rozwoju poszczególnych miast w okresie od początków XIX w. po teraźniejszość z przypisami i bibliografią oraz edycję map topograficznych w jednolitej skali 1:25 000. Wersja internetowa natomiast oferuje dodatkowe, multimedialne możliwości wizualizacji rozwoju prezentowanych miejscowości.
    Despite a still widespread scepticism, digital publishing has become a common way to distribute a quite different range of publications. It is getting more and more important, especially in the academic world. Therefore, the present paper discusses the option of hybrid publishing which is a particular interesting option for historical atlases as it is shown by the Historical-Topographical Atlas of Silesian Towns. The atlas displays the spatial developments of 34 selected Silesian towns from the beginning of industrialization in the 19th century until present times. Each issue of the atlas contains a wide range of topographic maps (standard scale of 1:25 000), starting with the Prussian Urmesstischblatter from the early 19th century to modern Polish and Czech maps, as well as the German orthoimages and aerial photographs. These unique aerial photographs which had been taken by the German Luftwaffe during the final period of World War II were often the last images of urban landscapes of Silesia before the heavy war damages occurred. The Internet version of the atlas is an interactive linking of maps, images, texts and film sources on urban history of the chosen cities. After loading the application and the dynamic introduction, there initially follows a town overview. The switchable legend on the main map shows the border movements of Silesia during the assessment period. The shifting of borders formed the most significant caesuras for urban development in Silesia, particularly in the 20th century. An additional information part provides different texts on the concept of this collaborative project. After clicking on a town in the overview map, a time-line appears which is used to visualize the spatial development of the respective settlement of the town using maps, aerial images and a 3D trailer. 'Additional materials' contain further graphic views, town maps, photographs, and films which also provide an image of the town, whilst the description offers informative texts on its respective development phase. In comparison with the print issue of the atlas, the texts are abridged and adapted to the graphic materials which are used in the digital version. The completion of the survey of the spatial development of each town is depicted by the growth phases maps. In the digital version of the Historical-Topographical Atlas of Silesian Towns they build one animated map, which brings together the spatial and temporal developments described in the textual contributions. In parallel with the interactive online version, the research results will be published in the form of individual bilingual volumes for each town. In addition to the complete texts on the development of the respective towns written by an international team of authors and the edited maps at a scale of 1:25 000, these also include an extensive bibliography. So far the two volumes Gorlitz/Zgorzelec (2010) and Opole/Oppeln (2011) have been published.

    Artykuł przedstawia przykłady wykorzystania zasobu historycznych danych przestrzennych, zgromadzonego w ramach Internetowego Atlasu Polski Niepodległej, opublikowanego w 2021 r. jako efekt projektu Instytutu Historii PAN i Wydziału Geodezji i Kartografii Politechniki Warszawskiej. Zasadniczym celem artykułu jest ukazanie możliwości badania struktury sieci osadniczej z wykorzystaniem analiz przestrzennych oraz propozycja sposobów odtwarzania metodami kartograficznymi struktur przestrzennych: grup obiektów osadniczych czy jednostek administracyjnych.
    The article presents examples of the use of historical spatial data collected for the Internet Atlas of Independent Poland. The Atlas was published in 2021 as a result of the project of the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Faculty of Geodesy and Cartography of the Warsaw University of Technology. The article’s main aim is to show the possibility of investigating the structure of the settlement network using spatial analyses and to propose ways of reconstructing spatial structures employing cartographic methods: groups of settlement objects or administrative units.
