Opis:
The aim of this study was to compare colonization of pine chips without supplements and pine chips supplemented with forest litter, peat and lignite by mites (Acari), and particularly oribatid mites (Oribatida) in a two-year cycle. The study was conducted in the years 2013-2014, on microplots established in a belt of trees in a nursery in Białe Błota within Bydgoszcz Forest District. The experiment was established on four microplots (1 x 1 m). It included the following variants: C - pine chips alone, Lf – pine chips inoculated with fresh forest litter, Lf+Pe – pine chips enriched with deacidified high peat (20%) (pH 5.5-6.5) and inoculated with the litter, Lf+Li - pine chips enriched with granulated lignite (20%) inoculated with the litter. In the first year of the study, mite abundance in the chips inoculated with forest litter was significantly higher than that on microplot C. In the second year of the experiment, the abundance of these microarthropods decreased probably due to unfavorable weather conditions. The most common group of mites were usually oribatid mites that accounted for 19.7 to 80.4% of all mites. An analysis of seasonal dynamics of Oribatida abundance over the entire study cycle revealed a clear increase in their numbers in non-supplemented pine chips only on the last sampling date. Oribatida abundance in Lf variant was similar at the beginning and end of the study. Contrary to that, their number decreased in the chips supplemented with peat, and particularly those enriched with lignite. In total, 36 species of oribatid mites were identified on all microplots. The greatest boost in species diversity after the introduction of forest litter was observed in Lf chips and the smallest in Lf + Li variant. Oribatula tibialis was the most common oribatid mite in the investigated substrates. Low numbers of Oppiella nova and Tectocepheus velatus, the species having trophic associations with fungi, may indicate poor colonization of the chips, particularly those enriched with lignite, by saprotrophic organisms.

The aim of the study was to analyze the presence of mites (Acari), with special focus on indicator oribatid mites (Oribatida), in control pine wood chips and pine wood chips enriched with peat and lignite inoculated with forest litter and irrigated. The study was conducted in 2013 on microplots (1 x 1 m) located within a belt of trees in a nursery in Białe Błota. The experiments included the following variants: C - pine wood chips, Ec - pine wood chips inoculated with forest litter, Ec+Pe - pine wood chips enriched with deacidified high peat (20%) (pH 5.5-6.5) and inoculated with forest litter, Ec+Ca - pine wood chips enriched with granulated lignite (20%) (granule size 1-10 mm) inoculated with forest litter. The addition of forest litter caused an increase in total number of mites in the control pine wood chips and those enriched with peat. Mites belonging to Mesostigmata order prevailed in control chips and those enriched with forest litter and peat, while Oribatida were dominant mites in the other variants. Considering the results for the entire year, 20% addition of peat and lignite negatively affected the presence of oribatid mites, thus indicating a reduced biological activity of the substrates. The populations of oribatid mites on all microplots were clearly dominated by Oribatula tibialis, and Tectocepheus velatus and Adoristes ovatus were slightly less common.

Opis:
The number and groups of mites (Acari) and species composition of oribatid mites (Oribatida) were analysed in three different substrates used for the restoration of degraded soils: (1) pine forest litter, (2) apple orchard litter, and (3) pine chips. The study was conducted in the years 2011-2012, on microplots of the area of 1m2 , established in a belt of trees of a nursery in Białe Błota (Bydgoszcz Forest District). Average biannual mite density per 50 cm3 of the investigated substrates ranged from 14.6 to 54.43 individuals. The highest numbers of mites were found in shredded forest litter and the lowest in pine chips. The most abundant mites in the studied material were oribatid mites, accounting for 57.3 % of these arthropods. The highest number of oribatid mites was found in the forest litter (28), and the lowest (20) in pine chips. The number of species in both types of litter was similar in the first and second year of the study, but it rose three times in the pine chips substrate over the study period. Oribatid species in the litter substrates were dominated by the eurytopic Tectocepheus velatus, and the most abundant species in the pine chips substrate was Oribatula tibialis. The experiment indicated a possibility of practical use of the shredded litter in the reintroduction of soil mesofauna and soil regeneration. This may facilitate the soil inoculation process, e.g., by using seeders specially adapted for this purpose. Additionally, a quick colonization of wood chips by acarofauna may suggest the possibility of using them as an excellent substrate for soil regeneration.

Opis:
W pracy przedstawiono osiągnięte efekty po 40-letnim okresie funkcjonowania zabezpieczeń przeciwerozyjnych wykonanych w lessowym wąwozie drogowym w Elizówce koło Lublina. Projekt zabudowy wąwozu drogowego zakładał zahamowanie rozmywu dna i wprowadzenie roślinności w celu uproduktywnienia erodowanego nieużytku. W dnie wąwozu wykonano 18 niskich grobelek z rdzeniem z desek i kiszek faszynowych, następnie dno obsiano mieszanką traw oraz posadzono drzewa (topola, grochodrzew). W następnych latach rozszerzono gamę gatunków drzew oraz wprowadzono krzewy. Techniczno-biologiczne umocnienie wąwozu okazało się skuteczne. Zabezpieczenia techniczne w postaci niskich grobelek ziemnych, skutecznie chroniły dno przed rozmywaniem i powodowały akumulację materiału glebowego w pierwszych latach kiedy roślinność nie opanowała dostatecznie wąwozu.
Effects of anti-erosion measures functioning for 40 years, madę in loess road ravine ij Elizówka near Lublin are presented. The project of road ravine development assumed the inhibitiol of the bottom wash-out and introduction of plants to make the eroded area producible. Eighteen Iow dykes with core madę of boards and fascine were built in the bottom then grass mixture was sowi and trees were set (Poplus sp., Robinia pseudoacacia). Another tree species and bushes were introduced in the following years. Technical and biological ravine protection appeared to bel efficient. The technical protection as Iow ground dykes efficiently protected the bottom against the wash-out and madę the soil materiał accumulate in several first years when plants did not get the ravine under control, yet. Due to plants used, the ravine area became producible, and the bushes and; trees of different growth ratę madę the trees became of dense and multi-level character. Application of fast-growing species (poplar, robinia) madę possible the fast production of wood assortments. Setting of fast-growing species altogether with slow-growing and tolerating the darkness ones appeared to be intentional because the latter would be the anti-erosion protection and the highest level of trees after the fast-growing ones removal. At present, plants make sufficient anti-erosion protection fully removing the water erosion processes in the ravine. Additionally, dense trees contribute to the soil regeneration and it is the support for birds and smali games on an area of slight afforestation. The direction of ravine development presented above seems to be the most proper for majority of similar ravines madę in loess rock.

Opis:
In recent years, particular attention has been paid to enhancing the meaning of natural regeneration, which is a part of the implementation of the concept of sustainable development and is one of the pillars of the natural direction of forest silviculture. Since the middle of the last century, the contribution of natural regeneration in Poland has been steadily increasing. The paper presents the analysis of density and variability of growth traits of natural regeneration of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) in south-eastern Poland. The study involved four compartments, which were prepared with the use of tiller and plough (active and double mouldboard). Density of seedlings, their height and root collar diameter, were measured. Density and growth characteristics of seedlings were higher at the tiller area and furrow compared with nonscarified soil and ridge. The highest cover with herbaceous plant was reported in ridges and non-scarified soil, but in most of the analysed compartments, it had no effect on the density of seedlings. It was found that different methods for soil preparation create different conditions for germination of seeds, which is reflected in the number of seedlings and its growth traits.

The future of humans and our planet, and food security, require innovative insights across many sectors of the economy (industry, agriculture, forestry, science and technology development). Reducing the use of chemicals, recycling carbon and recovering nutrients, caring for soil health, producing healthy food and adapting to climate change are the main challenges facing modern agriculture. The high proportion of soils low in organic matter, combined with manure shortages in some regions of Poland, poses a serious problem for maintaining the soil’s ability to perform productive and environmental functions. The use of selectively collected biodegradable waste, which contains significant amounts of organic matter, can be a key strategy for supplementing soil organic matter deficits. Green waste, kitchen waste, plant biomass produced in agriculture are valuable materials that, when processed through energy production, should become biofertilisers in line with the circular economy. Soil micro-organisms play an important role in the decomposition of organic matter and participate in the circulation and provision of nutrients to plants. Their role also includes fixing atmospheric nitrogen, stabilising soil aggregates, participating in the formation of soil humus and detoxifying soil from harmful substances present in the soil environment. Research to date confirms that biogas plant digestate can be a valuable fertiliser and has the potential to restore soil biological quality. There are virtually no reports indicating a negative effect of the digestate on the biological quality of the soil, especially when using digestate from agricultural substrates. This fact indicates that the potential of digestate in soil regeneration is significant, given its effects on soil biology, soil carbon and nutrient provision, and soil structure. It is more difficult to assess the impact of the digestate on soil biodiversity, especially the structure of the microbial population, which is strongly dependent on a number of soil, climatic and crop influences. An important aspect this review is the presentation of research needs for the potential of using digestate to regenerate soil and stimulate its biological life.

Opis:
Silver fir used to be one of the most important tree species in the Czech forests until the 19th century. Large scale clearcuts, which nowadays occur after the salvage logging of Norway spruce due to wind of bark-beetle attacks are unfavourable for the artificial regeneration of a fir. Growth of silver fir and three pioneer species was studied during first three years in a nurse crop system established after forest dis- turbance events. Five-years-old containerized silver fir seedlings were planted in autumn 2014 with silver birch, alder or aspen with and without nurse crops (control plot) on two localities (Tornádo and Rakovec). The Tornádo site represents natural conditions of Central European forest (Fageta typica) type on a haplic cambisols and favourable soil water regime, while Rakovec site a Querco-Abietetum forest type on a haplic stagnosols, which was periodically waterlogged. Silver fir grew best in admixture with silver birch which significantly promoted the height increment of the firs on both localities and improved the fir survival rate at one of the sites. The lower mortality and faster growth of both silver fir and pioneers were observed on Tornádo site where 92% and 100% of the silver fir trees survived under the birch and aspen cover, respec- tively, while 93% of planted firs survived in the open area. Only 93% and 67% of silver firs survived on the Rakovec site with same two pioneer species, respectively and 73% in the open area. After three years the highest height increment of silver fir was observed under silver birch, where trees were by 20 cm and 11 cm taller at Tornádo and Rakovec sites, than on the control plots, respectively. Aspen and alder had no significant effect on the height increment of a silver fir at any of the study sites. The shelter of nurse crops had no effect on the air temperature. The artificial regeneration of a climax silver fir and a pioneer silver birch was beneficial on Tornádo sites. On the other hand, there should be a delay between the regeneration of silver birch and underplanting of fir on the waterlogged sites.

The main objective was to evaluate to what extent subsoil compaction on an arable clay soil (Stagnosol (Drainic)) may be alleviated after 5 years under the climate conditions in South-East Norway. Therefore, field plots which had been ploughed and under minimum tillage were compacted through wheel impact (10x) with a 6.6 Mg wheel load. Samples were taken from the ‘compacted’ and ‘non-compacted reference’ treatments at depths of 40 and 60 cm both before and directly after compaction and again 5 years later. The soil physical parameters revealed that pre-compression stress, bulk density, air capacity, air conductivity and saturated hydraulic conductivity at depths of 40 and 60 cm were impaired by compaction, especially under ploughed. After 5 years, bulk density and pre-compression stress remained almost unchanged, while air capacity, air conductivity and saturated hydraulic conductivity had increased at both the 40 and 60 cm depth on both plots as compared to the compacted state and to R for the most part, indicating the recovery of the soil structure in the subsoil. The compaction status evaluated by the ‘compaction verification tool’ indicates the relative reduction of ‘harmful soil compaction’ (after wheel impact) with a change towards ‘slightly harmful compaction’ for the most part with an as yet limited saturated hydraulic conductivity at both depths after 5 years.

The purpose of this study was to determine the basic physico-chemical properties of soil in silver fir stands with different stage of natural regeneration. The investigations were carried out in south-west part of Poland – in the Sudety Mountains. From 854 silver fir stands, 40 testing sites, varying in terms of habitat conditions and degree of natural regeneration, were selected. Soil samples were collected from litter (organic horizon – O) with a thickness of 7–15 cm and from mineral A horizon lying up to 20 cm below the organic horizon and were then analysed for pH, EC, C org., total N, exchangeable cations (Ca, Mg, K, Na, H and Al), soluble Mn, Fe, Zn and Pb as well as particle size distribution (samples from A horizon). The analysed soil samples are characterized by very high acidity and low content of bases. According to the performed statistical tests, none of the factors analysed within the samples tested has a significant impact on the natural regeneration of silver fir. The only dependence between potassium content in soil and the regeneration of silver fir in the Sudety Mountains is close to statistically significance.

Mechanical site preparation (MSP) is commonly used to enable forest regeneration of clear-cuts. Less intense methods may be more suitable from an environmental point of view, but such a method can result in the lack of natural regeneration. We compare the influence of three MSP methods on natural regeneration of Scots pine. The methods differ in their degree of soil disturbance. The effects of MSP by forest plough (FP), active plough (AP), and forest cutter (FC) on density, quality, and biometric parameters of one-year old seedlings were determined. The highest density of seedlings was obtained in the FP treatment (188,000 seedlings ha–1). The seedling density was significantly lower in the AP method (121,000 seedlings ha–1), and in the FC variant (36,000 seedlings ha–1). The best quality seedlings were found in the FC variant, and the worst – in the FP treatment. Most biometric parameters of seedlings did not differ by MSP method, except for the root length and root:shoot ratio. By the end of growing season, in the FP treatment, 1-year old seedlings formed a top bud more than twice as often as the seedlings from the AP and FC treatments. The FP method led to the best Scots pine natural regeneration. The results obtained in the FC variant were not as good as in the FP method, though they were still acceptable from the silvicultural point of view. The FC method was the least intensive method of site preparation, yet it is considered the most appropriate from the environmental (soil protection) point of view.

In the similar soil and climate conditions, the tended and non−tended Scots pine undergrowth of natural origin was equal to the thicket of the same age in terms of the usefulness for cultivation. The non−tended natural regeneration of pine showed the statistically significantly highest mean values of diameter at breast height, height and current annual height increment in comparison with the tended natural and artificial regeneration. The comparison of the morphological parameters of six year old pine seedlings did not reveal statistically significant differences between the soil preparing with the double mould board plough (LPz−75) or the rotary plough. The more frequent silvicultural use of Scots pine natural regeneration, which locally exceeds the artificial regeneration in terms of growth traits and vitality, can diminish the risk of damage to pine stands resulting from suddenly occurring changes in site conditions.

Opis:
Traditional forest management as coppicing and coppicing-with-standard are recently considered as beneficial for biodiversity in woodlands. Cessation of coppicing leads to changes in stand structure and often loss of biodiversity. In contemporary Polish forestry coppicing is not applied, however some stands of coppice origin persist in Silesia until present. The overgrown coppice oak forests that cover the southern slopes at the foothills of the Sudetes Mountains (Silesia, Central Europe) are considered to be Euro-Siberian steppic woods with a Quercus sp. habitat (91I0): a priority habitat in the European Union, according to the Natura 2000 system. They support one of the largest populations of wild service tree (Sorbus torminalis Crantz) in Poland. In this study we investigated the relation of stand structure and trees parameters with environmental variables. The results showed considerable variability of stand volume, tree density and stems’ size correlated mostly with soil texture, but not nutrient content. We attributed it to soil dryness which seems to be the crucial factor controlling growth of trees. The natural regeneration of trees concentrated mostly on non-exposed sites on less acidic soils, but seedlings of wild service tree were present almost exclusively on most insolated sites, with shallow acidic soils. However, the regeneration of trees in sapling stage was restrained by browsing. Results suggest that maintaining of Sorbus torminalis requires protection against browsing, and some kind of active management is necessary to retain the observed stand structure with high proportion of wild service trees in stands on more fertile soils.

Opis:
The studies were conducted in the years of 1997−2001. The effect of four methods of soil preparation (ploughing with double mouldboard plough LPZ−75, disc plough PTL−2, disc harrowing and ridge formation) on natural regeneration of pine under the canopy shelter was analysed. Significant differences in the density, height and vitality of seedlings in the variant II (ploughing with disc plough) and variant IV (ridge formation) were found in the second and third year of studies. In the following years the differences between the variants were insignificant due to the heavy damage of seedlings caused by the cockchafer larvae. Neither of the methods applied protected the seedlings against this damage.

Opis:
This paper refers to the investigation of the influence of the soil preparation methods and selection of the forest tree species for the forest regeneration on the surface after the forest fire and in case of the poor coniferous forest site types. Results come from the experiment established in 1994 in Notecka Forest according to the split−plots method. Five soil preparation methods were tested (furrows, furrows with subsoiler, subsoiler, full shallow ploughing and control) and six forest tree species (Scots pine, European larch, gray alder, silver birch, pedunculate oak, red oak). On the base of the analysis of variance the height growth and survival of the tested species during 6 year period were evaluated.
