Opis:
The study examines the innovativeness of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the Wielkopolska region and factors influencing innovation in 2001-2004. The analysis is made against the background of changes in innovativeness and factors determining innovation in 1992-2000. The author used the results of surveys conducted among 163 SMEs in Wielkopolska in 2005. Overall, SME innovativeness did not increase in the analyzed period compared with previous yeas. The innovativeness of enterprises tended to grow with an increase in company size, the level of education of company managers (owners) and the age of the company. Companies using the Internet, especially those using it for sale and purchase transactions, displayed greater innovativeness. Innovation is restrained by scant financial resources, outmoded equipment and machinery, high business risk and the absence of an active pro-innovation policy pursued by the government.

Opis:
As a result of economic transformation, dynamic development of entrepreneurship took place. It effected in over 2 million small and medium-sized enterprises, that currently operate. The SME sector (micro, small and medium companies) comprises the vast majority of companies in Poland, namely 99.8%. The smallest entities are obviously the most numerous ones - 96% are micro-companies (1.84 million). The share of small companies in the structure of Polish companies is 3.0% (56.7 thousand), whereas for medium companies it is 0.8% (15.6 thousand), and for large companies it is only 0.2% (3.4 thousand). Condition and development prospects for small and medium companies and other participants of economic life generally depend on macroeconomic conditions. Therefore, the basic condition for long-term development of the small and medium-sized company sector should be recognized as stable macroeconomic policy held by the state, ensuring long-term economic balance, simultaneously leading to gradual reduction of tax and interest rates.

Opis:
The author endeavors to establish if Poland’s small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are undergoing internationalization in line with the rules described in the theory of gradual internationalization. This theory is generally used to explain the behaviors of companies on foreign markets. The author carries out a quantitative analysis on a sample of more than 100 exporting manufacturing enterprises based in Poland’s Małopolska province. The study shows that the behavior of most surveyed companies accords with the rules followed in other countries and the guidelines of the gradual internationalization theory. In particular, as their experience grows, companies are entering new markets and increasing the share of exports in their total revenue. Morawczyński’s study shows that companies are entering foreign markets at an increasingly faster rate. This conclusion is compatible with the latest findings in other countries. Beginning exporters usually choose countries that are considered to be close “psychologically,” the author says. Unexpectedly, Morawczyński finds a weaker-than-expected link between the level of internationalization and the system of knowledge associated with operations abroad. The surveyed companies break away from the pattern mapped out by the gradual internationalization theory. This is largely due to a global business concept increasingly popular in recent years whereby companies are encouraged to pursue global operations from inception onward.

Opis:
The article contributes to the overall body of knowledge about investments made by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and their sources of financing. The author conducts an empirical research through a direct interview method on two samples: a sample of 1,001 microbusinesses (meaning those with up to nine employees) and a sample of 1,202 SMEs with 10 to 249 employees. The research shows that only 41 percent of Poland’s SMEs carried out investments in 2004. Investment indicators were the highest among medium-sized enterprises (74 percent), while microbusinesses showed the lowest indicators (41 percent). In the case of individual types of investments (day-to-day maintenance and modernization, purchase of computer hardware and software, purchase of individual machines and equipment, purchase of means of transportation, construction of new plants and purchase of turnkey production lines), the highest investment indicators were invariably recorded among medium-sized enterprises. The percentage of investing companies increased with an increase in employment. The same is true of the percentage of companies declaring investment plans for the next 12 months. Most of the companies polled used their own funds to finance their investments. An important (though usually only supportive) role in financing some investments (in particular, the purchases of means of transportation, turnkey production lines, machines and equipment) was played by loans and leasing. In analyses by market segment, the following rule was observed: companies with a higher level of employment displayed a greater tendency to use loans and leasing programs. Other sources of funds for investment projects in the SME sector were of marginal importance. Comparative analyses reveal that the use of external sources of funds to finance SME investment projects in Poland is usually two to three times lower than in other EU countries and the United States. However, no evidence of discrimination against SMEs in lending by banks was obtained. Only 2.5 percent of the companies polled have been refused bank loans over the past three years. An increased propensity to invest among Polish SMEs could be stimulated by appropriate activities of the government, banks and entrepreneurs themselves.

At the present time, with continuous market changes, customer satisfaction and meeting the needs of employees are the most important factors for building managerial systems and implementing of the strategy in many companies. The goal of this paper is to develop a multi-faced knowledge management-based strategy combining analytical and qualitative methods and processes for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that managers can use to achieve strategic performance goals in their organizations. Various methods with the currently used modern technologies and a developed organizational culture make up the knowledge management system as a method inspired by the leadership, focused primarily on customer satisfaction and meeting the needs of employees. A multi-faced approach for building knowledge management-based strategy in small and medium companies is developed. It is based on practical experience and a research literature background incorporating implemented technologies and tools in quality environment with the usage of knowledge management. This research depicts a proposal of knowledge management-based strategy as a response to the lack of studies that address the knowledge management in building strategy in SME. Furthermore, this approach enhances the existing literature, giving insight in the collection of current business models.

Opis:
Nowadays competitiveness of enterprises is determined by the size and range of implemented investment projects. The investments need to involve necessary resources. In the case of the SME sector, enterprises have limited financial assets. Therefore, Poland’s accession to the European Union and the opportunity to use its funding is a chance for development of this sector. The aim of the paper is to discuss the significance of EU funds in investments of SMEs and to present the most important advantages and barriers to their spending. The research methods used in this paper are: study of literature and analysis of secondary data. The research material comprises programming documents and the results of research carried out at the request of the European Leasing Fund, the Polish Agency for Enterprise Development and the Polish Confederation Lewiatan. Conclusions: EU funding is an attractive source of financing investments for enterprises. It is one of the most affordable forms of obtaining capital. Acquisition of additional financial means can determine the start of an investment, extend its scope, increase its rate and improve its quality. However, in practice the share of EU funds in financing SMEs investments is still small and entrepreneurs face many barriers to using this form of support. Major obstacles include: excessive bureaucracy, strict procedures, over-scrupulous office workers, lengthy verification of payment applications, as well as delays in payments to beneficiaries.

This paper focuses on the role of small and medium-sized ports (SMPs) in enhancing the competitiveness and logistics performance of multi-port gateway regions and associated inland logistics systems. The concepts developed will be applied to the ports in the northeast of China, a multi-port gateway region around the Bohai Sea Economic Rim (BER). Port competition is analyzed by multi-variable methodology and generalized common characteristics of SMPs compared to gateway ports, and the similarities of SMPs and SMEs are also compared. Later in this paper, we analyze the role of a SMP in such region in different variables: (a) cargo volume and market share; (b) international connectivity; (c) relative cluster position; (d) port city and hinterland connection; and (e) logistics and distribution function. The five-dimension analysis combined with in-depth cases study of typical Yingkou port describes a profile of SMPs in the BER and provides future study possibility for more SMPs cases worldwide.

The subject of this study is the analysis of the influence the global crisis has on entrepreneurship in Poland, and identification of activities undertaken to fade away it’s results, both on the national and EU level. Background of this analysis consists of a judgment of the influence the globalization process has on the conditions of activity and development of enterprises, mainly those from the SME sector. The results from the research indicate the low position of our country in the field of innovativeness, and a decrease of financial results has an effect on the change of the investment strategy, in the direction of reducing innovations. However, despite the worsening of the economic conditions, the number of newly established enterprises showed increasing tendencies. The most subjects were created in the group of small enterprises, employing from 10 to 49 people. This confirms the thesis, that during the crisis the SME sector, with creation of conditions which supported activity, effectively contributed to the social – economic development

Research background: SMEs make up an important segment of the economic system, not only in the national economy, but also throughout the EU, and their importance continues to grow. SMEs in Slovakia, according to the latest data of the European Commission, represent 99.9 per cent of all enterprises, constitute 70.7 per cent of jobs, and 61.2 per cent of value added in the economy. However, they are often confronted with market imperfections. SMEs frequently have difficulties in obtaining capital or credit, particularly in the early start-up phase. Their restricted resources may also reduce access to new technologies or innovation. Authors often deal with the impact of SME financing on their development. Madrid-Guijarro et al. (2016), Lee et al. (2015) claim that SMEs have difficulty in funding innovation and the worsening in general credit conditions has been more pronounced for non-innovative firms. Purpose of the article: The main objective of the conducted research was to analyze the conditions for the development of small and medium enterprises (the SMEs sector) in Slovak Republic, whereas the specific objectives were: (1) to determine the terms for gaining external sources of financing for the development of SMEs, (2) to examine the resources for innovation development in the SMEs sector, (3) to find out if SMEs are considered to be a competitive advantage. Methods: The research was conducted in the Slovak Republic in 2016. Participants were 193 Slovak companies that were classified as SMEs by the size class of employment. The research tool used for the study was the own questionnaire consisting of 38 questions and the demographics. The structure of the questionnaire allowed the authors to identify the group of questions concerning the most important conditions for the development of the examined sector referring to the business environment. The results were processed by chi-square method. Findings & Value added: On the basis of the conducted research of the sector of SMEs , it can be concluded that a large group of companies have difficult access to external sources of financing and this refers both to the access to the European Union funds, grants, bank loans and other instruments of the financial market. However, it occurs that: (1) in Slovakia, the smaller the enterprise, i.e. the fewer employees it hires, the easier the access to external sources of financing, (2) innovative projects are realized from company profits or a loan, (3) problems in Slovakia in accessing external funds due to the complexity of the process of approval of applications and documents and strict criteria for the assessment of financial capacity.

The paper is concerned with research into the relationship between human capital and innovation in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Poland. The authors describe the results of surveys conducted on a random sample of SMEs, 1,308 in 2007 and 1,346 in 2009. The surveys showed that human capital has a direct influence on innovation in small and medium-sized enterprises. The greater the human capital stock, the more often companies become involved in innovative projects by introducing new products and services, making major modifications to the existing range of products and services, changing the way in which they are organized, introducing new methods for providing services to customers, modifying technology, entering new markets and changing the ways of distributing products. An increase in human capital leads to an increase in internet usage and the popularity of online banking services, in addition to a higher percentage of companies with patents, licenses, registered trademarks and quality certificates, the authors say. They conclude by stating that the results of their research can be applied in economic policy and the management of human resources in small and medium-sized enterprises.
