Opis:
Difficult situations are unavoidable in every human's life. They may challenge a person to cope with them in order to overcome the obstacles. The search for personal resources that help one successfully deal with life's challenges has become, in recent years, one of the main issues for both psychology and pedagogy. Resiliency, understood as a personality trait is a subjective quality, which helps one to develop flexible and positive adaptation to difficult situations and to overcome them. The article aims to present the importance of resiliency and the possibilities for raising humans capable of coping with life's obstacles and everyday difficulties.

The present study investigates the differentiating role of religious involvement in a level of resiliency, religious orientations, and life attitudes in a sample of 131 women. We examined the associations between resiliency and religious orientations as psychological resources, and life attitudes as an indicator of mental health in the noetic dimension in 4 groups. The following methods were used: the KPB-PO (Uchnast, 1997), a set of scales “Your religiosity” (Socha, 1992), and the Life Attitude Profile-Revised (Reker, 1992). Analyses of the data confirmed that religious involvement differentiates the level of resiliency, intrinsic and extrinsic religious orientations, as well as life attitudes excluding death acceptance. Furthermore, the results suggested that resiliency is an important resource in believers and non-practicing believers. Sense of security is a relevant correlate of meaning of life in non-believers. However, internally motivated religiosity which is characteristic of deep believers seemed to have the greatest influence on mental health.

ObjectivesThe SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has affected the development of negative phenomena such as anxiety symptoms, a tendency to use alcohol and aggressive behaviors. It is postulated to investigate the factors limiting the development of the indicated adverse effects. One of the psychological resources that may have a significant, pro-health character in relation to mental functioning is ego-resiliency (ER). It is described as a personality trait associated with a high ability to adequately regulate self-control, depending on the conditions. There are studies providing information about the prohealth, adaptive nature of ER during the COVID‑19 period. The aim of the study was to assess the relationships between ER and anxiety, the tendency to use alcohol and aggression in the group of Polish people in the initial lockdown period in Poland.Material and MethodsOverall, 538 adult Polish people participated in the study. The Ego-Resiliency Scale referred to as ER89-R12, according to Block’s concept, was used to measure ER. The other scales used were the General Anxiety Disorder Scale, the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test, and the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire. Statistical analyses were performed using Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient, the multiple regression procedure, the Mann-Whitney U test and the Kruskal-Wallis rank ANOVA. Cronbach’s α coefficients were also assessed.ResultsStatistically significant negative relationships between ER and the severity of anxiety symptoms and generalized aggression were found. There was a weak positive relationship between ER and the tendency to use alcohol. Among the surveyed Polish people, higher ER was characteristic of the older respondents (aged >29 years) and people with higher education.ConclusionsEgo-resiliency in the times of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic can counteract the development of anxiety and aggression. Optimal regulation seems to play an important role in this relationship. The relationship between resiliency and the tendency to use alcohol requires further observation.

Processes of children’s in the family are partly related to the quality of their parents’ marriage, which is influenced by various factors. Different factors have significant influence on marital quality. In particular, the link between personal characteristics of spouses (e.g. personality traits, attitudes, and values) and marital satisfaction has received much attention. However, there have been few studies concerning partners’ personal resources. The current research examined the effect of self-efficacy and resiliency on marital satisfaction among women. The study has covered 239 married women. Three questionnaires were used: the Wellmatched Marriage Questionnaire (KDM-2; Plopa, 2008), the Resiliency Assessment Scale (SPP-25, Ogińska-Bulik, Juczyński, 2008), and the Generalized Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES, Polish adaptation, Juczyński, 2001). Correlation and regression analyses were performed in this study. Both general self-efficacy and resiliency proved to be positively associated with marital satisfaction in general terms. Self-efficacy also correlated positively with intimacy and similarity, while resiliency correlated positively with all favorable dimensions of marital relation, and negatively with disappointment. Regression analyses showed that one aspect of resiliency – openness to experience and sense of humour – was a significant positive predictor of marital satisfaction.

Objectives The purpose of the research is to investigate the mediating role of coping strategies for stress in the relation between resiliency and post-traumatic growth in a group of paramedics. Material and Methods Data of 80 paramedics who have experienced traumatic event at their worksites was analyzed. The age range of the participants was 21–67 years old (mean: 35.47, standard deviation: 10.21). The Post-traumatic Growth Inventory, the Assessment Resiliency Scale and Inventory to Measure Coping Strategies for Stress – Mini-Cope were used in the study. Results Venting of negative emotions and denial appeared as suppressors in analyzing the relation, while planning plays mediating role between resiliency and post-traumatic growth. Conclusions In the process of post-traumatic growth, both avoidance and problem-focused strategies are important. Moreover, controlling such strategies as Venting and Denial may result in a high level of posttraumatic growth in the study group. The data supports that resiliency may have direct or indirect impact on post-traumatic changes. The results allow to understand the mechanisms of resiliency better, that relationship with post-traumatic growth is ambiguous.

Parents of children with Down syndrome face many challenges related to their children’s disability. They manage to raise their children primarily thanks to their internal resources, protective psychological traits and help from other people. The aim of this study was to investigate the level of ego-resiliency as an important personality trait in a group of mothers and fathers of children with Down syndrome. The relationship between ego-resiliency and parental satisfaction was also studied. The sample consisted of 126 parents (75 mothers and 51 fathers). Our results show that there is no difference in the level of ego-resiliency between mothers and fathers of children with Down syndrome. Nevertheless, it is noticed that there is a difference in perceived stress, psychological well-being and some aspects of parental satisfaction between parents with high and low levels of ego-resiliency. These results give an interesting insight into the internal func- tioning of parents of children with Down syndrome.

In 2014, the Eastern Ukrainian regions of Donetsk and Lugansk became a scene of military operations that continue until now. Data from 58 soldiers who have taken part in the Ukrainian conflict were analyzed in order to answer the following question: How do basic hope and various aspects of resiliency explain the intensity of different aspects of posttraumatic growth (PTG) in soldiers fighting in the East of Ukraine? Four stepwise regression analyses were conducted. In each of them one of particular aspects of PTG was the dependent variable, whereas the group of predictors consisted of basic hope and three aspects of resiliency. It turned out that Personal strength as well as Appreciation of life were positively related to Openness to new experiences and a sense of humor. Relating to others was strongly related to Basic hope. Finally, Spiritual change depended on Basic hope as well as Persistence and determination in action. Because of the small sample size, the results should be treated with caution. However, they seem to encourage further research concerning this group.

Maintaining high levels of well-being in the face of a chronic disease requires utilization of many psychosocial resources in the coping process. The efficacy of this process depends on using coping strategies that fit to the specificity of a particular chronic disease. The aim of this study was to show the relationships between well-being and coping strategies, and less studied constructs such as resiliency and personal empowerment among people with diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis. The study comprised 100 participants (59 with type I diabetes and 41 with rheumatoid arthritis) who completed a set of questionnaires measuring wellbeing, strategies of coping with stress, resiliency and personal empowerment. As expected, there was a significant indirect effect of resiliency on well-being through mediators such as personal empowerment and disease-specific coping strategies. The results support the significant determinants of well-being among people with chronic diseases. They also indicated a more complex structure of the variables in which resiliency plays a major role for the well-being by the means of coping strategies and personal empowerment.

The assumptions of the own research presented in the article refer to the socio-interactive approach that assumes that learning and proper language acquisition by a child require cognitive activity, proper progress in cognitive development, and active - resulting from social relations - observation of adult speech. The research assumptions also take into account the importance of the autoregulatory function of language and systemic understanding of the concept of family. The aim of the study was to check the presence of the relationship between speech understanding by children with delayed verbal development and the various dimensions of their family functioning and ego-resiliency of parents. The study included a group of 72 well-cognitively functioning Polish children aged 5-7 with a diagnosis of delayed verbal development and their families selected using random and nonprobability sampling. The children were examined using the Polish Picture Vocabulary Test – Comprehension - version A (PPVT-C). Functioning of the families of the examined children was operationalized by the results of FACES IV by D. Olson (the Polish version of the scale was used); while the Ego Resiliency Scale was used to study resilience. The results of the conducted research indicate, among others, that families of children with lower scores on speech understanding present less favorable functioning profiles in the scope of selected dimensions of FACES -IV: Family Communication, Cohesion, Disengaged and Family Satisfaction. However, the relationship between the child's understanding of speech and other demographic variables such as parent's age, parent's gender, parent's education, marital status has not been confirmed. It was recognized that the results of the research will allow in the future to optimize the therapeutic services offered to children with verbal development disorders and their families in their natural environment, as well as to allow the presentation of appropriate strategies to support speech development (especially speech understanding abilities) in children. The creation of a group representing a certain type of language disorder will allow a better adaptation of the training program to the specific difficulties experienced by a child, as well as allow for more effective involvement of parents in preventive measures.

Celem niniejszego doniesienia jest odpowiedź na pytanie, czy poziom prężności psychicznej łączy się z poczuciem otrzymywanego wsparcia w grupie osób badanych. Badania przeprowadzono na 174-osobowej grupie nastolatków, obojga płci, w wieku 14–18 lat.W prezentowanych badaniach uczestniczyły dwie grupy respondentów, 112 osoby zaklasyfikowano do grupy nieprzystosowanych społecznie, natomiast 62 osoby do grupy porównawczej.
The purpose of this report is to answer the question of whether the level of resiliency is combined with a sense of support received in the group of subjects. The study was conducted on a group of 174 teenagers of both sexes, aged 14–18 years. The study involved two groups of respondents. 112 individuals were classified as socially maladjusted and 62 as the controls. The study was conducted in attendance centres for adolescents at risk. SPP-18, a Polish scale for measuring resiliency, designed by N. Oginska-Bulik and Z. Juczyński, and author’s own Support Factors Questionnaire, were used in the study. The following results were achieved: the overall level of resiliency and factors 1,3,4 was not significantly different in the compared groups. Socially maladjusted youths significantly differed from the controls in perseverance, determination in action and a sense of support from the school. Resiliency and the perceived support (family, school and peer) were correlated in the group of sociallymaladjusted youth.

Objectives The purpose of the present study was to investigate, through the lens of conservation of resources theory, the predictive role of 2 positive personality traits in the form of core self-evaluations (CSE) and ego-resiliency (ER) in resource losses and gains triggered by the COVID-19 crisis. Material and Methods The 2 personality traits, constituting positive person-related resources, were examined in relation to resource losses and gains in both general and distinct life domains: hedonistic and vital, spiritual, family, economic and political, and finally power and prestige. Results The findings from a nationwide sample of 1000 working adults (65% women; age M±SD 38.93±10.9 years) indicated that CSE negatively predicted resource losses, whereas ER served as a positive predictor of resource gains. The predictive role of personality traits was demonstrated both for resource losses and gains in general and in different life domains. Conclusions The results of this study highlight in particular the role of CSE as a protective factor of resource losses, and the role of ER as a promotive factor of resource gains, suggesting that both traits might evoke divergent resilience responses when facing prolonged stressful life events.
