This experiment was designed to know the effect of upper limb postural deviations on grip strength and grip endurance time. A full factorial design of experiment, i.e., 3 (0°, 45°, 90° abduction angles of upper arm) ´ 3 (45°, 90°, 135° angles of elbow flexion) ´ 3 (0°, –60° prone, +60° supine angles of forearm rotation) was used to find the effect of 27 combinations of postures on maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) grip strength and grip endurance time. The results showed that none of the main factors were significant on MVC grip, although there was a change in MVC grip. Grip endurance time significantly decreased with an increase in upper arm abduction. Also, grip endurance significantly increased with the elbow flexion angle and decreased with forearm rotation from neutral. These data will help designers and engineers to improve the workplace and tools to reduce the risk of injuries.

The purpose of this study was to examine how gender of young adults in Taiwan affected the ability of their hands to apply force regarding the use of the left or right hand and the varying sequences of force application. Maximal voluntary contraction of grip (MVC g) and hand-grip control (HGC 50%) of 200 participants was measured. The study discovered that gender showed significant differences in the scale of MVC g, whereas there were no significant differences in HGC 50%. Left hand versus right hand resulted in significant differences in the scale of MVC g, whereas there were no significant differences in the scale of HGC 50%. The 5 levels of the sequence of force application showed no significant differences in either MVC g or HGC 50%. The interactive effects of the 3 factors (gender, hand, and sequence of force application) showed no significant differences. The results of the study can serve as a reference in designing tools.

Opis:
Background The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of hand grip strength (HGS) test in identifying highly stressed individuals and to examine the effect of exercise and lifestyle on HGS and stress measures. Material and methods It is cross-sectional study. Students of the Medical University of Gdańsk, Poland were asked to fill out a questionnaire, undergo body composition analysis, perform HGS test and provide a saliva sample for cortisol measurement. Results Self-rated stress (SRS) was significantly higher in pre-clinical years (PCY) compared to clinical years (CY). HGS was significantly lower in PCY males than CY males. Participants who performed some form of exercise had significantly higher HGS compared with those who did not exercise. A positive correlation between HGS and BMI was noted. Students with low HGS were found to have lower levels of salivary cortisol (SC). However, there was no significant difference in SC levels between PCY and CY students. Conclusions HGS may be a reliable method of identifying stressed individuals and promoting healthy lifestyle behaviors. HGS testing is a safe, cheap and easy to perform method for a large number of participants while being time economical.

Opis:
Purpose: This study was aimed to investigate the function of toes while running through comparing bound toes by external-manipulation with natural separate toes by evaluating kinematics and plantar pressure analysis. Methods: Seven habitually barefoot male runners participated in the running test under toes binding and non-binding conditions, and Vicon and Novel insole plantar pressure measurement were conducted synchronously to collect kinematics and foot loading. Results: Ankle kinematics showed larger non-significant range of motion in the frontal plane while running with toes non-binding.The medial forefoot had a smaller force time integral, and with hallux had a larger force time integral than those of running with toes binding, with significance level p < 0.05. Conclusions: While no significance existed between bound and non-bound toes in kinematics, the medial forefoot had a smaller foot impulse and the hallux had a larger foot impulse for those with non-binding feet. This suggests that other functions such as the active gripping action of toes might be important for the efficiency of the foot windlass mechanism (the plantar fascia support), which would be beneficial for running performance improvement and foot injury prevention.

Przedstawiono zrobotyzowane stanowisko badawcze z chwytakiem podciśnieniowym do analizy procesu pakowania. Wykorzystano dwa rodzaje przyssawek, Piab BX 52P i Piab F50-2.
A robotic test rigs with vacuum gripper for analysis of the packing process was presented. Two types of vacuum cups were used, Piab BX 52P and Piab F50-2. Based on the research for the packing process of cardboard packages, relations between parameters were determined, i.e. negative pressure, working speed of a robot and weight of packages. It was determined that for the process of packing 0.25 kg packages, a proper negative pressure should be 0.4 bar, whereas for 0.5 and 1 kg packages should be equal to 0.6 bar. The maximum working speed of a robot, which ensured proper execution of the packing process was 80%. Moreover, impact of the distance between packages in the initial location on the course of packing process was analysed. In this case, the best results were obtained with the use of 15 mm distance.

Introduction. Winter pruning is a cultivation practice necessary for maintaining the balance between the vegetative and the productive activity of plants and requires many working days using hand scissors. This operation involves the subjects carrying out a series of gestures that are repeated with considerable frequency, which are all musculo-skeletal disorders risk factors (MSDs) for the hand-wrist area. Objective. The aim of this study was to investigate the forces applied to pruning tools. Materials and method. Using a sensor matrix, peak and average forces were measured which are exerted while cutting branches of 3 different diameters, from 5 wine-grape cultivars. Samples were tested on 8 participants using sensored scissors to record, in 6 hand areas, the forces necessary to cut. Results. Results showed that while cutting, the factors which can impact the force employed (peak and average forces) by the subjects are branch diameter and percentage of branch humidity. Cut duration was inversely related to the size of the subject’s hand. The middle finger area of the hand recorded the highest force average and peak levels, while the hand region least affected during the cuts was the farthest from the thumb. Conclusions. The study enabled the highlighting of which factors influence the forces employed by the operator while cutting grape branches, and to identify the hand regions where muscle activation is at its most. These findings can be relevant in preventing MSDs. Further studies need to be conducted with a larger number of subjects.

Objectives Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is common among office workers and limits functional hand ability and the ability to work. Carpal tunnel syndrome prevention programs implementation are still insufficient among office workers. In view of the fact that physical activity is the best method of preventing musculoskeletal complaints the aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of prevention exercises protocol for hand and wrist pain among office workers. Material and Methods Study group consists form 62 office workers, reporting complaints of hand and wrist pain. Exercise group it was 49 subjects who performed the exercise protocol and the non-exercise group consisted of 13 subjects. An exercises program, consisting of 7 exercises. The program was planned for daily routine during 8 weeks. The effectiveness of the exercise program was assessed by physical parameters (hand grip and pinch grip strength, force of forearm muscles) and questionnaires (Visual Analog Scale pain scale, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Symptom Severity Scale, and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Functional Status Scale functional hand assessment questionnaires) were performed. Assessment was performed before and after the intervention. Results Statistical analysis of the data showed significant changes in the value of measured hand grip of the right hand (Z = –2.85, p < 0.01). For pinch grip, changes were significant for both the right (Z = –2.12, p < 0.05) and the left hands (Z = –2.35, p < 0.05). Functional performance improved significantly in bought groups. There was no statistically significant change in the intensity of experienced pain. Conclusions The results of the study indicate that performing a preventive exercise program regularly has an effect on increasing forearm muscle strength in a group of office workers. Office workers with symptoms of CTS who exercised regularly had higher results in hand grip and pincer grip strength. Exercises do not affect the level of pain complaints, which may indicate a more complex etiology of pain perception in this study group.
