This paper explores the environmental and legal aspects of green infrastructure, focusing specifically on green roofs in urban areas. The study highlights the importance of both existing and newly created green infrastructure in mitigating the effects of climate change. Green roofs offer various benefits, including energy efficiency, improved air and water quality, urban regeneration, and biodiversity enhancement, resulting in a higher quality of life in cities. Consequently, there is a need for formal regulations to support the development of green infrastructure in urban areas. The European legislator has recognized the environmental risks and benefits of green infrastructure and has provided guidelines for its implementation. This article evaluates the legal framework and examines the incorporation of European policy into local spatial plans to promote the integration of green infrastructure.

Green walls, along with green roofs, parks, and vertical gardens, belong to the green infrastructure of cities, which will encompass the majority of humanity in the coming decades. Green infrastructure benefits both urban residents and nature in the urban landscape, although there is no scientific consensus on the extent to which green walls, especially green facades, impact biodiversity in cities. This study examined the influence of green facades on the richness of mammals, birds, and invertebrates, considering the species and age of the plants comprising the green facade in a medium-sized city located in southwestern Poland. It was found that the implementation of green facades significantly enhances species’ biodiversity compared to non-vegetated walls. Four synanthropic bird species were nesting on green facades: Eurasian collared dove (Streptopelia decaocto), blackbird (Turdus merula), house sparrow (Passer domesticus) and woodpigeon (Columba palumbus). For the beech marten (Martes foina), the green facades are a hunting ground for birds and their eggs. This simple and effective method of creating green walls provides benefits to local wildlife by creating habitats, shelter, and foraging opportunities for selected species. However, it is difficult to determine whether green facades contribute to the formation of ecological corridors in urban environments. The study also examined the social aspect related to the establishment and maintenance of green facades on the surveyed buildings.

The article refers to issues linked with development of cities in the context of applying concepts green infrastructure. It aims at identification of economic-environmental effects resulting from revitalization of the river valley Ślepiotka in Katowice carried out as part of the project REURIS. In methodological aspects the paper is based on documents desk-research method (theoretical studies and normative documents) as well as it uses a case study method to present selected projects realised in the frame of green infrastructure.

As cities are developed in line with sustainable development, space needs to be efficiently utilized. A balance must be achieved between investment sites and naturally active areas in order to shape the urban environment. In the public city, green spaces represent an indisputable element and are essential. An urban greenery plan is an essential component of a city's economic development. In recent years, spatial planning has been gaining government attention, particularly green development. Responsible management of these spaces is essential. However, urban foliage management appears to be a challenge for local authorities. In a spatial development plan, new greenery may be created, destroyed green spaces should be renovated, or brownfields must be repurposed. The purpose of this paper is to present a coherent concept for reclaiming the estate in Krakow, focusing especially on landscaping the Riverside Park. The design will create a friendly space that can be used by residents for rest and meetings, as well as enhance aesthetics and quality of life. Parks and community gardens are listed as strategic components for equipping the city with public spaces for meetings and recreation as well as other activities.
Ponieważ miasta rozwijają się zgodnie z zasadami zrównoważonego rozwoju, przestrzeń miejska musi być efektywnie wykorzystywana. Aby prawidłowo kształtować środowisko miejskie, należy osiągnąć równowagę między terenami inwestycyjnymi, a obszarami cennymi przyrodniczo. W ostatnich latach uwagę rządu przykuwa planowanie przestrzenne, a zwłaszcza rozwój zieleni miejskiej. Ochrona krajobrazu miejskiego jest istotnym elementem rozwoju gospodarczego, dlatego niezbędne jest odpowiedzialne zarządzanie terenami zielonymi. Jednak racjonalne zarządzanie zielenią miejską wydaje się być ciągle dużym wyzwaniem dla lokalnych władz. W planie zagospodarowania przestrzennego można wyznaczyć miejsca pod nową zieleń, odnowić zniszczone tereny zielone lub zmienić przeznaczenie terenów poprzemysłowych. Celem tego artykułu jest przedstawienie przykładu spójnego projektu odnowienia osiedla w Krakowie, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem zieleni w planowanym Parku Rzecznym. Utworzenie na tym terenie ogrodu społecznego będzie sprzyjać spotkaniom towarzyskim, a także podnosić estetykę i jakość życia w przestrzeni miejskiej. Parki i ogrody społeczne są wymienione jako strategiczne elementy wyposażenia infrastruktury miasta i ważny komponent przestrzeni publicznej do rekreacji lub innych aktywności.

Multifunctional allotment gardens are an important part of the green infrastructure of cities. In spite of this, they are given little attention in the plans and policies of cities. One of the major threats to the existence of allotment gardens within the spatial structure of cities is the pressure of investment, which results from an underestimation of the role of gardens. The task of preserving allotment gardens in the ecosystems of cities rests with the local spatial planning. Urban spatial policy towards allotment gardening is exemplified by the case study of Poznan. The bases for the analysis include the study of the conditions and directions of spatial planning, as the spatial policy document that sets forth the city and local spatial development plans, which are Acts of local laws.

The article is focused on the problem of green infrastructure, which effectively helps to reduce the effects of floods and water deficit in cities. It presents examples of good practices implemented in China. In the end of 2014, China’s national government initiated the “sponge city” project. A “sponge city” is a city built around the concept of managing water in an ecologically sustainable way by imitating natural hydrological cycles in the city, which translates into the restoration of the ability to absorb, infiltrate, store and purify rainwater in urbanized, highly sealed spaces. In “sponge cities”, flood risk management is included in the mainstream of urban planning and has the appropriate legal framework. The intention is to improve urban resilience through rainwater capture, storage and use by means of green roofs, pavements made of permeable materials, tumbles, rigoles, retention ponds, water squares, rain gardens and creating wetlands parks.

Extreme weather events such as: high temperatures, heat waves, torrential and heavy rains, strong winds or floods are increasingly frequent symptoms of climate change. As predicted by climatologists, they would keep occurring more and more often and their intensity would increase. Flooding and floods are the biggest threats to the agglomeration. They pose a great danger not only directly to residents' property, but also cause severe economic losses, e.g. during a temporary interruption of a production process. Adaptation to climate change can be supported not only by new technologies, but also by some trends in spatial planning, i.e. activities related to installation of green infrastructure throughout the city. Water and green perfectly fit into an urbanized space. The article investigates how green walls can participate in adaptation of the city of Krakow to climate changes. The term of the green wall was also discussed and the own its definition was proposed. The aim of the research was to find locations of green walls in the city of Krakow and then visually assess their spatial structure and density. On the basis of this data, areas for potential growing of green infrastructures in a selected settlement unit were identified. The research material comprised the map of Krakow and information obtained during a preliminary inventory of the Krakow’s green walls. The map of Krakow's green walls has been completed on the basis of cartographic data from OpenStreetMap.org. In addition, the materials form the state geodetic and cartographic resources were used. The map was developed using the QGIS program – version 2.4.0. The authors created a map of green walls in Krakow along the main communication routes. The map is made up of spatial data in a digital form, as two vector layers linked with the city map. There were just a few plant species planted on the green walls. However, a large variety of constructions on which vegetation occurred was observed. The map of green walls along the most important communication routes in Krakow allowed to identify potential places for new plantings and to assess a spatial structure of green infrastructure. There is a large number of green walls in the city, but their density is not large, yet. There are many places that are potential locations for greening. Particular attention should be paid to shopping centers, as there are many ways to introduce this form of green infrastructure in their area. Only if at a high density, greenery will help to overcome effects of climate change in the city.
Ekstremalne zjawiska pogodowe takie jak okresy wysokich temperatur, fale upałów, ulewne i nawalne deszcze, silny wiatr czy powódź to coraz częściej występujące objawy zmian klimatu. Zgodnie z przewidywaniami klimatologów będą występowały częściej, a ich intensywność będzie wzrastać. Największym niebezpieczeństwem dla aglomeracji są podtopienia i powodzie. Mają one negatywny wpływ nie tylko na stan mienia mieszkańców, ale mogą także powodować dotkliwe straty gospodarcze, np. w postaci czasowych przerw w produkcji. Adaptacji do zmian klimatu sprzyjają zarówno nowe technologie, jak i trendy w planowaniu przestrzennym takie jak działania związane z instalacją infrastruktury zielonej w mieście. Woda i zieleń doskonale wpisują się w zurbanizowaną przestrzeń miejską. W artykule przedstawiono stan obecny i możliwości implementacji zielonych ścian w celu adaptacji miasta Krakowa do zmian klimatu. Przedyskutowano także definicję zielonej ściany i zaproponowano własną. Celem prowadzonych badań było określenie lokalizacji zielonych ścian na terenie miasta Krakowa oraz ocena wizualna struktury przestrzennej i zagęszczenia tego typu obiektów. Na tej podstawie określono obszary do potencjalnego zazielenienia tego typu formą zielonej infrastruktury w wybranej jednostce osadniczej. Materiał do badań stanowiła mapa Krakowa oraz informacje pozyskane na podstawie prowadzonej wstępnej inwentaryzacji zielonych ścian Krakowa. Mapa zielonych ścian Krakowa została opracowana na podstawie danych kartograficznych pochodzących z OpenStreetMap.org. Ponadto do przygotowania mapy wykorzystano także materiały państwowego zasobu geodezyjnego i kartograficznego. Mapę opracowano z wykorzystaniem programu QGIS w wersji 2.4.0. Określone cele osiągnięto poprzez stworzenie mapy zielonych ścian na terenie Krakowa wzdłuż głównych ciągów komunikacyjnych. Opracowana mapa stanowi dane przestrzenne w formie cyfrowej w postaci dwóch warstw wektorowych połączonych z mapą miasta. Gatunki stosowanych roślin wykazywały niewielkie zróżnicowanie. Zaobserwowano natomiast dużą różnorodność konstrukcji, na których występowała roślinność. Analiza opracowanej mapy lokalizacji zielonych ścian wzdłuż ważniejszych ciągów komunikacyjnych Krakowa pozwoliła na wskazanie potencjalnych miejsc dla nowych nasadzeń oraz ocenę struktury przestrzennej tego typu formy zielonej infrastruktury. W mieście występuje duża liczba zielonych ścian, ale ich zagęszczenie nie jest jeszcze duże. Istnieje wiele miejsc będących potencjalnymi lokalizacjami do zazielenienia. Szczególną uwagę należy zwrócić na centra handlowe., gdyż w ich okolicy istnieje wiele możliwości do wprowadzenia tej formy zielonej infrastruktury. Zieleń w mieście pozwoli na uzyskanie niwelacji skutków zmian klimatu dopiero przy dużym jej zagęszczeniu.

This study focuses on the influence of motor transport on various indicators of park ecosystems and Taraxacum officinale Web., as well as on their applicability to the bioindication of the urban environments in the largest megalopolis of Ukraine, namely, Kyiv. Our investigations were carried out in 14 park ecosystems exposed to different levels of aerotechnogenic loading: low pollution level in Pushcha-Vodytsya (park) and outskirts, average pollution level alongseven roads with medium traffic and high pollution level along eight highways. Pollen indication, integration and statistical methods were used to identify the most sensitive indicators of the impact of air pollutants. The aim is to assess the impact of vehicle emissions on the state of park ecosystems in the metropolis using bioindication and GIS technologies. The effects of air pollution on green infrastructure at the level of cells, organisms, groups and ecosystems in time and space are revealed. Under the influence of aerotechnogenic pollution, there is a deterioration of trees, their drying, defoliation of crowns and deterioration of integral indicators of park ecosystems. Using QGIS (Free open source geographic information system, version 3.12.3 „București”, May 15, 2020), we have created maps for the spread of air pollutants. The highest levels of air pollution and damage to parks were concentrated in the central part of the city with dense buildings and near heavy traffic roads. The average daily maximum allowable concentration (MAC) of phytotoxicants exceeded 1.5 MACa.d. and depended on the terrain and directions of the prevailing winds. We registered degradation of the megalopolis ecological state by 19.3% for 7 years.

Population ageing and growing awareness of the need for physical activity is one of the most important topics in Europe nowadays. But it should be noted that there is still no interdisciplinary and integrated approach to urban environment planning concerning physical activity of elderly people which would take into account special needs and possibilities of this particular group. Elderly people represent one of the groups which are threatened with social exclusion for different reasons. This article presents a proposal for a method of constructing a spatial system consisting of natural and anthropogenic elements of urban environment which can be interpreted as Inclusive Urban Green Infrastructure, enabling active and healthy ways of recreation, including the needs of elderly persons. It is based on the existing elements of the environment, but to create a well-functioning system in urban space it is necessary to introduce additional elements, both natural and man-created. The method refers to the spatial definition of areas for active recreation which meet the adopted, specific for elderly people, pro-health and functional requirements. Creation of such a system in cities would contribute to inclusion of this group into social life, thus boosting social coherence and integration across generations, and would also bring beneficial health results. Such infrastructure would also be of considerable importance for sustainable urban growth and improvement of the quality of urban space. The paper is based on source materials from the fields of science investigating health in connection with physiology of the process of ageing, influence of physical activity on this process, impact of negative features of the environment on the health of elderly people as well as urban space planning and development. The proposed methodology of constructing Inclusive Urban Green Infrastructure is presented on the example of Łódź, using data from the Geographic Information System (Topographic Objects Database) and population database for cities.

This paper provides information on the definition and benefits of green infrastructure, outlines the green infrastructure solutions and technics and their influence on multifunctionalty and multiscale of current research. Examples of green infrastructure practices include green, blue, and white roofs; hard and soft permeable surfaces; green alleys and streets; urban forestry; green open spaces such as parks and wetlands. Green infrastructure approaches help to achieve sustainability and resilience through practices such as among many others: urban forestry, and water conservation. This paper evaluates benefits of selection of particular green infrastructure solutions on the background of broader ecological context.
Idea zielonej infrastruktury jest jednym z najważniejszych kierunków tworzących nową jakość w zarządzaniu środowiskiem przyrodniczym. Zielona infrastruktura oprócz funkcji ekologicznej ma wpływać na poprawę: warunków zdrowotnych, poprawę poszczególnych komponentów środowiska, a nawet kontrolować rozwój przestrzenny miasta. Niektórzy badacze przyjmują założenie że zielona infrastruktura powinna być traktowana równorzędnie z techniczną. Celem artykułu jest określenie rodzajów zielonej infrastruktury w strefie zurbanizowanej ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem obszarów wielofunkcyjnych, które dzięki swojej atrakcyjności przyrodniczej i krajobrazowej, wynikającej z różnorodnych form użytkowania, mogą zapewnić optymalną ilość i jakość terenów rekreacyjnych. We współczesnych badaniach zauważa się, że strefy wielofunkcyjne w obrębie których preferowane są metody użytkowania gruntów, chroniące różnorodne biologicznie ekosystemy, zatrzymując czysta wodę, zabezpieczając przed erozją, powodziami służyć mogą różnorodnym potrzebom mieszkańców miast. W artykule prezentowane są zasady rządzące funkcjonowaniem zielonej infrastruktury, szczególnie najważniejsza z nich dotycząca poprawy łączności między istniejącymi obszarami przyrodniczymi, w celu przeciwdziałania ich fragmentacji i zwiększenia ich ekologicznej spójności.

Opis:
Artykuł porusza zagadnienie planowania zielonej infrastruktury w skali lokalnej - skali osiedla na bazie wykorzystania istniejącego potencjału przyrodniczego. Do badań wybrane zostały tereny zieleni nieurządzonej z niewielkimi ciekami i/ lub zbiornikami położone w obszarze czterech dynamicznie rozwijających się wrocławskich osiedli, takich jak: Polanowice-Poświętne-Ligota, Maślice, Muchobór Wielki i Krzyki-Partynice. Celem analiz było wykazanie, czy i w jakim stopniu tereny o przyrodniczym potencjale zostały ujęte w planach rozwoju osiedli oraz określenie wskazań co do dalszego zagospodarowania i zarządzania tymi terenami w myśl koncepcji zielonej infrastruktury. Zaprezentowane wyniki pokazują różny stopień włączenia istniejących elementów i układów przyrodniczych w planowaną strukturę osiedli: od ich zachowania i wykorzystania do budowania zielonej sieci, po likwidację na rzecz nowej zabudowy i infrastruktury drogowej. Przedstawione wyniki wskazują także, iż: (1) czynnikiem decydującym o zachowaniu potencjału przyrodniczego badanych obszarów była przede wszystkim potrzeba zaplanowania w tkance osiedli terenów o funkcji rekreacyjno-wypoczynkowej - parków osiedlowych; (2) zachowanie łączności i ciągłości przestrzennej układów przyrodniczych wynikało z odpowiednich zapisów na poziomie dokumentów planistycznych, natomiast brak tych zapisów skutkował likwidacją lub zredukowaniem powierzchni biologicznie czynnej; (3) aspekt wielofunkcyjności poszczególnych obszarów został we wszystkich badanych przypadkach ograniczony do jednej funkcji - rekreacyjno-wypoczynkowej. Istotne jest także, iż żaden z obszarów nie został zagospodarowany integralnie z powstającą wokół zabudową i infrastrukturą, co świadczy o tradycyjnym podejściu do planowania i zarządzania terenami zieleni miasta - podejściu uzupełniającym, a nie równorzędnym w odniesieniu do innych planowanych elementów miejskiej struktury. W zakresie wskazań co do przyszłego zagospodarowania poszczególnych obszarów za najważniejsze uznano wzmocnienie dostarczanych przez nie usług regulacyjnych, głównie przez wykorzystanie zachowanych cieków, rowów i/lub zbiorników do budowania systemu proekologicznego gospodarowania wodą opadową i roztopową gromadzoną z terenów zabudowanych.

The European policies acknowledge greenways and “Green Infrastructure” as strategically planned and delivered networks comprising the broadest range of green spaces and other environmental features. The Aniene River, linking the eastern suburbs of Rome to the City of Tivoli, has been envisaged in a multi-level approach as a Green-Blue Infrastructure able to hinder land use fragmentation and provide new continuity to remainders of open space. In turn, landscape is taken into account as a biodiversity reservoir, the scenery of outstanding cultural heritage and the relevant backdrop of ordinary life.

Rynek zielonych dachów w Polsce rozwija się coraz szybciej, zwłaszcza w dużych metropoliach, gdzie rozwiązania te stanowią alternatywną formę dla terenów zieleni w zwartej strukturze zabudowy. Zielone dachy leżą również w polu zainteresowań polskich naukowców, ponieważ wciąż brakuje nam krajowych badań w tej dziedzinie, dostosowanych do polskich warunków przyrodniczych, prawnych i ekonomicznych. Wzmożony rozwój zielonych dachów generuje potrzebę dokształcania się w tym zakresie - zarówno na poziomie akademickim, jak i zawodowym czy administracyjnym. Niestety, w ofercie edukacyjnej wciąż jest mało publikacji podejmujących temat zielonych dachów w sposób całościowy i uporządkowany, bazujący nie na zagranicznych, ale na polskich doświadczeniach i wynikach badań. Istotnym problemem jest niedopracowana terminologia funkcjonująca w środowisku naukowców i praktyków. Niniejszy artykuł prezentuje przegląd pojęć w dziedzinie zielonych dachów i proponuje ujednolicenie wybranych definicji, dzięki czemu można uniknąć najczęściej popełnianych błędów. Prezentowany materiał może zostać wykorzystany jako baza dla nomenklatury zielonych dachów w Polsce. Został on wypracowany przez Polskie Stowarzyszenie Dachy Zielone przy udziale naukowców i praktyków w dziedzinie zielonych dachów w Polsce.
