Opis:
Over the past years, the Internet has become a tool of communication among different people in the world. Due to the spread of the Internet, many researchers have focused their attention on the study of language use through the Internet. Code-switching is one of the sociolinguistic phenomena that have been observed in Computer Mediated Communication (CMC). The present paper explores the sociolinguistic phenomenon of code-switching in computer mediated communication by Jordanians. The study highlighted several English words that have been utilized for code-switching through online interaction. Furthermore, it studied the participants’ views about the role of Facebook in mixing Arabic with English. The methodology used in this study was descriptive, involving both qualitative and quantitative methods. An online questionnaire was shared on Facebook pages and groups. The sample included 181 participants; in addition, 35 interviews took place at home with relatives, with neighbors and in shops. The results revealed several perspectives about code-switching. Some participants mentioned that Facebook has led them to code-switch by using the most frequently switched words, such as; comment, like, group, share. Nevertheless, other participants mentioned that they prefer to use Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) and avoid using any English words in online activities, which means that Facebook has no impact on their language. A higher percentage of participants agreed that Facebook plays a role in mixing Arabic with English.

The Internet has become an extremely powerful tool which has pervaded every corner of our lives, including the foreign language classroom. However, we should not forget that in certain situations this tool cannot be easily implemented in the FL classroom, because of either pedagogical or financial reasons. This paper presents CALL Workbench, a course management system which is flexible enough to be adapted to two stand-alone computer-based EFL learning settings: with or without access to the Internet but provided with electronic communication tools. A WebQuest has been designed and implemented through CALL Workbench in order to illustrate some of the advantages and disadvantages that both settings can present as compared to those found in a traditional Web-based environment.

Opis:
Social Networking Sites (SNS) such as Facebook (FB) are currently highly used by students because technology has the potential to become a valuable resource to support their educational communications and collaborations. This paper attempts to present a comprehensive picture of what has been investigated in terms of the use of Facebook as an online English language-learning environment and inquires whether this learning model can enhance students’ learning of English. It also aims to explore the students’ perceptions towards learning English in the Facebook context following four treatments, language improvement, confidence, motivation and attitude. The sample who participated in the study was N=65, in the department of English language and translation enrolled in a B.A program. Findings revealed that the EFL students believe that FB as an online learning environment facilitates, supports, and encourages their English language learning. In addition, the findings indicate that students’ motivation and confidence towards English language learning improved via FB. The study also revealed that students had a positive attitude towards this learning model. In light of the findings of the study, it is recommended that TEFL teachers should plan learning classes that use SNS such as Facebook as a learning platform.

This paper aimed at investigating humor in text-based computer mediated communication (CMC). To this end, 200 turns exchanged by a number of 50 English language teachers on Viber, a messaging application, were randomly selected and analyzed based on Adam’s (2012) classification of humor to examine emoticons, punctuations (question mark, exclamation mark, and ellipsis), laughter (textual and acronym), formatting (spelling variations, capital/small letters, and elongation), and explicit markers in the corpus. The findings showed that emoticons outweighed other humor markers while laughter rated the least used marker in the corpus.

Based on an analysis of 770,269 links posted by 1,969 Polish Facebook users, the present article investigates how the users’ characteristics influence their link-sharing behaviors, and how these characteristics are related to social rewards received for posting links. Male users, older ones and inhabitants of larger cities tend to link more to politics-related news (they also receive more social feedback for doing that) while female users, younger ones and inhabitants of smaller locations tend to link more to entertainment-related sites. The cluster analysis of linking strategies of Facebook users suggests that the most common behavior is to provide a mixture of news and entertainment-related links, although pure “news-keeper” and “entertainment-keeper” types of users are distinguishable.

Opis:
The English language has featured markedly as a popular language of computer-mediated communication, and notably of Facebook posts, written not only by native or second language speakers, but also users of English as a foreign language. The aim of this paper is to investigate the frequency, form and function of English language Facebook profile updates of 110 (55 women and 55 men) users of English representing 41 European, Asian, African and Latin American countries belonging to the Expanding Circle. Approached from the point of view of the code choice as well as the users’ gender, and supported by an online survey data, the study analyses in detail the form of the updates in connection with gender preferences and identifies language contexts and functions users choose to express themselves in English as opposed to their native tongue, thereby demonstrating the role of English as a we-code in a social networking service.

In the article, the author presents the results of the study of netiquette, that is, a multi-faceted collection of rules and conventions governing computer-mediated communication. The aim of the study was to establish whether these conventions have changed with the advent of new modes of online interaction. The research was based on the categories proposed by Michel Marcoccia (1998), against which some of the early formulations of netiquette and their modern versions were compared. Such comparison allowed the author to identify the areas of change as well as draw some conclusions regarding their origins and directions.

Opis:
The paper focuses on the dynamics of online exchanges in English and Polish posts related to the Greek political and economic crisis in 2015 and European Union membership. It introduces and defines the concepts of emotion and conflict, and discusses quantitative and qualitative methods and tools used to analyse corpus materials of Polish and English online communication, primarily in terms of the Interconnectivity Index and emotion valence as perceived by the users as well as the degree of their emotional arousal. The data reveal significant differences in the conflict dynamics profiles between the two groups of commentators, more interactional, and interactant face-saving discourse strategies in English, manifested by means of self-mockery and jocular style, significantly less frequent resort to verbal abuse and vulgar language on the one hand, and a more aggressive, confrontative and mutually hostile attitude, with instances of verbal abuse types recorded in the Polish data. An attempt to interpret the results in terms of cultural dimensions and characteristics concludes the paper.

Opis:
This article examines the relevance of modern technology for the development of learner autonomy in the process of learning English as a foreign language. Computer-assisted language learning and computer mediated communication (CMC) appear to be particularly conducive to fostering autonomous learning, as they naturally incorporate many elements of autonomy that give learners control over and responsibility for their own learning, such as choosing the materials used, managing their contact with various genres and types of interaction, often in authentic contexts, and evaluating their own progress, measured through their success in understanding and conveying meanings. However, providing access to language resources does not automatically lead to the development of autonomy, as much depends on other factors, such as the learners’ level or previous experience in learner training. The present study investigated whether advanced learners of English made use of out-of-class CMC engagement for the purpose of learning English autonomously. The results indicate that most of the participants were eager to use CMC opportunities to deliberately practice their English, although, quite naturally, leisure and social reasons for using CMC predominated. The expressed willingness to deliberately focus on practicing English during beyond-theclassroom meaning-oriented online interactions confirms the great potential of CMC as an autonomy enhancement tool.

The grammatical category of the person in bg-mamma forum communicationThe main purpose of the paper is to present some grammatical features of computer-mediated communication (CMC), in particular the verb category of the person. The specifics of grammar use in CMC texts are not preferred by researchers as they are more difficult to investigate. The grammatical system is more stable and conservative and the differences in grammar use are less discernable. A lot of investigators claim that CMC occupies the middle position between speech and writing. Hewing and Coffin (2004) consider that in speech the first and the second person use is preferred; in writing the third person has more frequent use. This research thus aims to investigate the use of personal forms of verbs in some discussions in the largest Bulgarian forum platform – bg‑mamma. The results show that in the corpus the third person appears more often than others. The second person has lowest use.

The purpose of the paper is to analyse linguistic practices of specifically one group of English Facebook users – the speakers of Indian English. As one of the most thoroughly studied members of the so-called New Englishes group, Indian English is believed to demonstrate a number of characteristic features resulting especially from the prolonged English-Hindi language and culture contact. Following a brief outline of the history and current position of English in India the paper examines in detail characteristic features of Indian English found in the Facebook material collected from fan pages and private messages: changes in spelling and pronunciation of English words, use of abbreviations, characteristic features of nativised Indian English grammar, language errors, as well as some typical sociolinguistic features of that variety of English, notably forms of address, culture-specific elements, and code-switching.

Opis:
W badaniach empirycznych wykorzystano dwie metody badawcze: PAPI (Paper and Pen Personal Interview) i CAWI (Computer Assisted Web Interview).
The main objective of the paper is to identify the degree to which Social Networking Sites (SNSs) are used in communication related to gathering information about products via mobile devices (mobile communication). The research problem is presented in the context of Computer Mediated Communication theory (CMC). In the realisation of the main purpose of this paper, an attempt has been made to answer two research questions: firstly, is there a relationship between types of products and the frequency of gathering and conveying information about them via SNSs? Secondly, what role do mobile devices play in this communication? A comprehensive literature study has been complemented with an empirical research, conducted in four countries – China, Poland, the United States and Turkey. Two research methods: PAPI (Paper and Pen Personal Interview) and CAWI (Computer Assisted Web Interview) were used in the empirical research. The research showed a significant use of mobile devices (i.e. smartphones and tablets) in communication (gathering and conveying information about products) via SNSs, especially in relation to products such as electronic devices as well as clothes and footwear.
