Opis:
The paper analyses the current offer of combustion pressure sensors for use on marine engines under operating conditions, methods of data acquisition, methods of determining TDC position and methods of obtaining diagnostic information from the indicator diagrams. Terms of continuous work on marine engines themselves only: new ABB cylinder pressure sensor, the piezoelectric sensors from KISTLER and AVL companies, but with limitations, the main ones being stability at high temperature. Another important issue for the accuracy of mean indicated pressure and heat released characteristics determination is referred to TDC position on the indicator diagrams. TDC is appropriate thermodynamic point, it is hardly determinable in the presence of interference and lack of sufficient information – but is used, for example in ABB solution. One of the sources of diagnostic information is to analyse trends in some parameters, which, unfortunately, is very difficult in environments with varying engine loads. Further progress in the diagnostic use of indicator diagrams should be associated with the use of the heat released characteristics and the net internal efficiency, which as shown by the results of preliminary tests can be used to assess the accuracy of the injection and combustion of fuel, including gas fuel. Supplementing these methods may be the use of vibration and noise to detect certain malfunctions.

Opis:
The practical design of the marine engine multi in-cylinder pressure acquisition system has been presented. The system operational properties and measurement methodology is aimed the online marine diesel engine applications. The design of engine combustion pressure recording system is based on piezoelectric sensors set that comprises quartz pressure element and charge amplifier, mounted on the indicator pipes, equipped with valves. The required crank degree signal is obtained from shaft encoder that is installed on the test bed engine shaft-line (free end of the hydraulic break). The encoder's TDC dedicated reference pulse is able generate simultaneously at the cylinder 1 and 6 in TDC position. The accuracy of the static crankshaft position calibration was evaluated. Additionally, a complex timing system was developed for individual cylinder TDC and crankshaft positioning definition. Before real time data acquisition starts, the number of engine cycles is defined for recording and the first pulse of each crankshaft revolution is used as trigger signal, so that all instantaneous pressure and crank angle signals acquisition can be started at the identical crankshaft position. The method provides required numbers of combustion cycles to be measured for time domain averaging and off line processing.

This paper explores the feasibility ofusing in-cylinderpressure-based variables in terms of certain class of errors, caused by indirect pressure measurement. Experimental direct in-cylinder measurement pressure setup was constructed, to make comparisons with standard indicator channel and indicator valve design. Zero-dimensional model was used for particular combustion system design. Subsequently, paper describes the application of a zero-dimensional combustion model for pressure signal analysis in cylinder head indicating passage of medium speed marine diesel engine. Recording of engine cylinder pressure development and its qualified evaluation is common aid for maintenance. Especially the outline of experimental test-bed, the injector nozzle equipped with piezoelectric pressure transducer, measurement system specification, B type uncertainty -mean angular speed characteristic, wavelet "denoising" setting and signals comparison, engine cylinder indicator model channel, cylinder pressure traces influenced by engine speed and load, cylinder pressure traces influenced by engine load and speed with two different indicator channel lengths, Indicated engine cylinder power in motoredmode of operation are presented in the paper.

Opis:
The paper presents results of experimental measurements and analysis of combustion pressure and fuel pressure in high-pressure line before fuel valve. The aim of conducted experiments was detection of failures of high-pressure fuel system. Both pressure signals were recorded simultaneously and subsequently processed using FFT decomposition of obtained wavelets. The idea of comparison of both fuel and gas pressures came after observations of occurrence changes of wavelets form of fuel high pressure, probably caused by malfunction of injector's sprayer. The engine from test bed is very well armoured with sensors, what enable observations of fuel and combustion pressure in real time. Unfortunately, such equipment is very unlike in real objects, what created un idea to find out whether run of combustion pressure wavelet reflects fuel pressure deviations and whether is possible to detect such kind of deviations in way of decomposition of indicated pressure wavelet. Experiment was carried out in laboratory of Gdynia Maritime University, using medium speed diesel engine. Simulation of malfunctions of fuel valve was obtained by installation of specially prepared spraying nozzles. All measurements were carried out at reference load of 75% of MCR (Maximum Continuous Rating). In order to get reliable results and avoid errors due to omitting outer atmospheric conditions, registrations were repeated several times, in days characterized by different temperature and atmospheric pressure.

Opis:
The article discusses one of the most popular methods of diagnosing selected damages of marine piston engines, which is the indication or measurement of pressure changes in the engine’s combustion chamber. Improving the quality of indicator diagrams may contribute to the increase in the efficiency of using the parameters indicated in the diagnostics of marine piston engines. Measurement errors during engine indication are primarily caused by measuring channels that connect the combustion chamber to the pressure sensor. One way to avoid these errors is to install the pressure sensor directly in the combustion chamber. It seems that it is possible to eliminate these errors. However, there is a risk that the pressure sensor will be damaged by the effect of high temperature on it during combustion of the fuel-air mixture in the engine’s combustion chamber. The article presents the results of tests that indicate that the measured temperatures in the place where the sensor was installed (in the combustion chamber) did not exceed the critical value specified by the pressure sensor manufacturer. The article also presents the results of cylinder pressure measurement not only in the combustion chamber but also in two other points - on the thread of the indicator cock and in the measuring channel between the indicator cock and the cylinder head. The tests were carried out in a wide range of engine load technically efficient and with simulated damage in the fuel injection system. The article presents a comparative analysis of the parameters read out of the indicator diagram for the three abovementioned pressure measurement locations. It was shown that the pressure measurements carried out directly in the combustion chamber are free from errors resulting from the influence of measuring channels and indicator cock.

Opis:
The measurement of combustion pressure relies on connecting a pressure sensor to a four-stroke marine engine cylinder by a channel led out from the engine cylinder. The geometry of the channel distorts the results of combustion pressure measurements. The purpose of the work is to create a model of combustion processes in engine cylinders. The model uses a mathematical description of the indicator channel on one of the engine cylinders. The input data to the model and the data necessary for its verification came from the direct measurements on the research facility. The test object was a four-stroke Sulzer 3AL25/30 engine loaded by an electric power generator. During calculations, different diameters and lengths of measurement channel were simulated. The obtained results allowed to formulate the conclusion that the geometry of the measurement channel has a significant impact on the measurement results. The increase of the length of the measuring channel as well as the diameter of the channel causes disturbances in the measurement of the maximum pressure.

Flammability limits and flame speeds of dilute-lean fuel mixtures of hydrogen (H2) and acetylem premixed with oxygen (02) and nitrogen (N2) were examined with a detailed kinetics model. These mixtures are used in a preburn in a constant volume combustion vessel to create elevated temperatures and pressures with gas compositions that represent the thermodynamic state in a diesel engine combustion chamber at fuel injection and auto ignition. A mixture of hydrogen and acetylene with combined atomic hydrogen to carbon ratio (HCR) of 1.85 was used to match that of typical diesel fuel and results are shown in comparison to a previously used mixture with a HCR of 1.17. The lower flammability limit (LFL) of the HCR 1.85 fuel mixture was found at an equivalence ratio of 0.235, while flame speed and adiabatic combustion temperatures were also predicted for post preburn product oxygen levels between O and 21 percent. Flame speeds were shown to decrease with a reduction in oxygen concentration, an increase in nitrogen dilution, while combustion temperatures increased over most of this range. Trends for this relation of flame speed and temperature are presented and a new premixed fuel mixture with an HCR of 1.85 is proposed.

In this paper the experimental results of spark ignited (SI) engine fuelled with lean mixture of simulated producer gas compared with chosen gaseous fuels are presented. The SI engine test fuelled with simulated producer gas, natural gas and simulated biogas with variable value of excess air ratio has been done. The experiments were carried out on the petrol engine with a low engine displacement. Typical SI engine was selected in order to evaluate the potential application of gaseous fuel (i.e. producer gas, natural gas or biogas). These types of engines are available on a wide scale and commonly used in automotive sector because of the low purchase price and operating costs. It is expected that after minor modifications, the engine can easily operate in micro CHP system. The main goal of this work is to determine the performance of the engine and its impact on the environment during the combustion of the lean producer gas mixtures. The study shows the impact of both the excess air ratio and the type of fuel used for engine performance and emission index. Combustion of lean mixtures of producer gas leads to an increase of carbon monoxide in the exhaust. Increasing the value of excess air ratio affects the growth of indicated efficiency of the engine

Opis:
In this paper the calculations algorithm of heat-transfer coefficient in the combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine is presented. Developed algorithm is based on the in cylinder pressure data. The proposed algorithm can be helpful to determine the average values of heat-transfer coefficient from working medium to the combustion chamber walls (crown of a cylinder head, cylinder walls and piston head) during combustion process. The calculation method includes modified one zone heat release model in combustion chamber of SI engine. Proposed method consists in closing the energy balance equation by the coefficient which expresses the heat losses to the walls of the combustion chamber. The average value of the heat losses during combustion process is calculated by two steps. Firstly, the integration of the energy balance equation (without specifying the heat losses) leads to designation of the so-called net value of heat released in cylinder. In the next step the amount of the total energy supplied to the cylinder is determined taking into account the chemical energy of the supplied fuel. The difference between the supplied value of chemical energy and heat released net value allows to determine the heat losses average value. In last stage, the heat flow equation leads to calculate the mean value of heat transfer coefficient during combustion process.
