Air samples were collected at an early-warning sampling and monitoring radioactive contamination station ASS-500. The results of the measurements are presented for radioactive aerosols collected on filters each week between 1992 and 1999. The large variations in activity concentration were observed in annual cycles. The maximum values exceeded the mean annual values by a factor of 2.8 to 7.3. Over the period of eight years the mean values of activity in air was found to decrease from 5.3 mi Bq m-3 in 1992 to 2.2 mi Bq m-3 in 1999. A good correlation between the Cs-137 activity and dust content in the air indicates that in the observed period the main source of Cs-137 activity is the dust with soil and vegetation particles. The effect of radiation from inhalation is negligible (626 pSv).

Adverse health effects of environmental pollution is a frequent subject of medical and veterinary studies. One of the most dangerous air contaminants is particulate matter (PM). Planting trees as biological filters is considered as a valuable way of reducing number of particles in air. However, there is not enough research on selecting the most efficient plant species/varieties for accumulation of these pollutants. In this study, five commonly cultivated tree species were compared: silver birch, Simon’s poplar, callery pear ‘Chanticleer’, northern red oak and Swedish whitebeam, to identify the differences in accumulation levels of PM on leaf surface. Results showed that all of the tested species accumulated high amounts of PM. Whitebeam and birch were most effective in capturing particles, while lowest levels were found on oak.

Long-term results of ground-level air radionuclide contamination at the Russian coast of the Baltic Sea (nuclear facilities in the vicinity of the town of Sosnovy Bor) are under consideration. As compared with 1992-1997 [1], the Leningrad Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) equipment hermetic sealing (in 1998-1999) caused both the reduction of detection frequency of 131I aerosol and the maximum concentrations of 137Cs in the ground-level air at the NPP site. Long-term weekly nuclides' concentration time series were examined by the correlation analysis. Results of the analysis are presented. The seasonal fluctuations of 7Be concentrations in the ground-level air were examined by the harmonic (Fourier) analysis. The seasonal fluctuations of its concentrations with the maximum in spring-summer period are shown.

The determination of the level of pollutants and reciprocal relations “outside-inside” forms an important component in the study involving assessment and control of indoor air quality. This paper reports the results of a study with regard to the mass concentration of PM10 determined concurrently in the outdoor air surrounding a university building and inside the lecture rooms in it. The research project was undertaken in the cold season and registration included 83 independent observations with the duration of 90 minutes. The research applied a reference method involving measurements of PM10 mass concentration using gravimetric technique. The results were analyzed by application of non-parametric tests. For the purposes of classification of variables and assessment of the role of the specific variables, the analysis was based on the use of principal components. It was indicated that the mass concentration of particulate matter in the lecture rooms dśs not differ from the levels measured at the same time in the air surrounding the building only during the periods corresponding to periodic room ventilation. It was also found that the design and usage of the buildings, as well as the number and activity of humans determine the aerosanitary conditions in the enclosed spaces formed by the lecture rooms. It was observed that the mass concentration of particulate matter in the rooms is higher in the cold season. A statement was made that design solutions need to be implemented with the purpose of using intelligent ventilation systems.
Określenie udziału źródeł zanieczyszczeń oraz wzajemnej relacji „outside-inside” jest istotnym problemem w szacowaniu i kontroli jakości powietrza wewnętrznego. Artykuł przedstawia wyniki badań nad stężeniem masowym PM10 określonym jednocześnie w okalającym budynek powietrzu zewnętrznym oraz w salach dydaktycznych uczelni wyższej. Projekt badawczy przeprowadzono w sezonie chłodnym, rejestrując 84 niezależne, 90-minutowe obserwacje. W badaniach wykorzystano, opartą na grawimetrii, referencyjną metodę pomiaru stężenia masowego PM10. Rezultaty badań przeanalizowano przy użyciu testów nieparametrycznych. W badaniach, celem klasyfikacji zmiennych i oszacowania odpowiedzialności poszczególnych czynników, posłużono się analizą składowych głównych. Wykazano, że wartości stężenia masowego pyłu zmierzonego w salach dydaktycznych nie różnią się od poziomów określonych jednocześnie w okalającym budynek powietrzu zewnętrznym wyłącznie podczas okresowego wietrzenia pomieszczeń. Stwierdzono, że konstrukcja oraz sposób użytkowania budynku a także liczba i aktywność osób w znaczący sposób determinują warunki aerosanitarne w pomieszczeniach zamkniętych. Wykazano, że w sezonie chłodnym stężenie masowe pyłu zawieszonego jest wyższe w pomieszczeniach. Złożono postulat przyjęcia rozwiązań polegających na implementacji inteligentnych systemów wentylacyjnych.

W pracy omówiono składniki bioaerozolu ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem zanieczyszczeń mikrobiologicznych (bakterii i grzybów), źródeł ich pochodzenia (naturalne i antropogeniczne) oraz rozprzestrzeniania się i zagrożeń wynikających z obecności drobnoustrojów w powietrzu wewnętrznym i atmosferycznym. Przedstawiono przykładowe choroby, których czynniki przenoszone są drogą powietrzną, oraz problemy związane z regularnym monitoringiem zanieczyszczeń biologicznych atmosfery. Odrębną część pracy poświęcono sposobom badań mikrobiologicznych, przedstawiono krótko wybrane metody badań powietrza oraz omówiono ich wady i zalety. W ostatniej części przedstawiono problemy dotyczące oceny stopnia zanieczyszczenia powietrza przez drobnoustroje. Problemy te wynikają z braku obowiązujących norm oraz innych regulacji prawnych związanych z mikrobiologicznym skażeniem powietrza, które umożliwiałyby jednoznaczną interpretację wyników badań.
This study discusses the components of bio-aerosol – with particular emphasis on the microbiological contaminants (bacteria and fungi), their sources (natural and anthropogenic), spread and risks resulting from the presence of microorganisms in the indoor and atmospheric air. The paper presents examples of diseases transmitted by air and the problems associated with regular monitoring of microbiological contamination of the atmosphere. A part of the work is devoted to the methods of microbiological testing of air pollution and presents briefly chosen methods and discusses their advantages and disadvantages. The last section presents problems with assessing the degree of air pollution by microorganisms resulting from the absence of applicable standards and other regulations related to the microbiological contamination of air, which would allow for unambiguous interpretation of research results

Light passenger aircrafts, also known as „air taxis”, are a fast and comfortable way of transport, which becomes more and more popular nowadays. However, there is a lack of publications regarding harmful biological agents in the cabin air of light passenger aircrafts. The aim of the study was a quantitative and qualitative evaluation of microbial contamination of cabin air in eight light passenger aircrafts with open cabin type and two helicopters. The bioaerosol sampling was carried out with a stationary, volumetric method using MAS-100 NT impactor. The concentration of microorganisms was expressed as CFU/m3.The highest concentration of bacteria was detected in the helicopter Robinson R44 Raven 2 I (175 CFU/3), while the highest concentration of fungi was detected in the plane model TB9 Socata Tampico (385 CFU/m3). Kruskal-Wallis test did not show any statistically significant difference in the concentration of microorganisms in the air between the tested aircrafts, and between them and the outside background.The predominant groups of microorganisms in bioaerosols were fungi and Gram-positive cocci, which constituted 31.1-83.0% and 5.6-62.2% of the total microbiota, respectively. Sixteen species of bacteria belonging to the 8 types and 14 species of fungi belonging to 13 genera were identified in the samples.The qualitative analysis showed the presence of bacterial and fungal saprophytic strains belonging to the 1. risk group, and species belonging to the 2. risk group (Bacillus subtilis, Streptomyces spp.). Taking into account the influence of temperature and relative humidity on the concentration of bacteria and fungi in the air, it was observed that the higher temperature determined the higher concentration of bacteria, but there was no such relationship concerning fungi. Relative humidity did not significantly determine the concentration of bioaerosols.Our results indicate that the concentrations of bacteria and fungi in the cabin air were very low. However, even such an environment cannot be considered as free from pathogens. As shown by the results, the bioaerosols in the cabin air of light passenger aircrafts may contain potentially pathogenic bacteria and fungi belonging to the 2. risk group. However, bioaerosols may contain potentially pathogenic bacteria and fungi belonging to the 2. risk group. Direct contact with the afore-mentioned microorganisms, especially in the case of people with weakened immunity systems, can cause adverse health effects, as well as allergic reactions.

The aim of this research was to evaluate the microbiological indoor air contamination level in chosen facilities of the primary health-care for adults and children. The total numbers of mesophilic bacteria, staphylococci, coli-group bacteria and moulds in both surgery rooms and patients’ waiting rooms were determined. Air samples were collected with a MAS 100 impactor and the concentration of microorganisms was estimated by a culture method. The microbiological air contamination level was diverse: the number of mesophilic bacteria ranged from 320 to 560 CFU/m3, number of staphylococci – 10–305 CFU/m3, coli group bacteria – 0–15 CFU/m3 and moulds – 15–35 CFU/m3. The bacteriological contamination level of the air in examined community health centers was higher than described in the literature for hospitals and exceeded the acceptable values proposed for the surgery objects.
Przedmiotem pracy była analiza liczebności mikroorganizmów w wytypowanych pomieszczeniach służby zdrowia w placówce podstawowej opieki zdrowotnej. Zakres badań obejmował określenie stężenia bakterii mezofilnych, gronkowców, bakterii grupy coli oraz grzybów pleśniowych w powietrzu poczekalni dla chorych, gabinetu lekarskiego oraz punktu szczepień. Próbki pobierano za pomocą aparatu MAS 100 firmy Merck a liczebność mikroorganizmów szacowano metodą hodowlaną. Stwierdzono, iż poziom zanieczyszczenia mikrobiologicznego powietrza badanych pomieszczeń był zróżnicowany. Liczebność bakterii mezofi lnych kształtowała się na poziomie 320–560 JTK/m3, gronkowców – 10–305 JTK/m3, bakterii grupy coli – 0–15 JTK/m3 a grzybów pleśniowych – 15–35 JTK/m3. Poziom zanieczyszczenia bakteriologicznego w badanej placówce opieki zdrowotnej był wyższy niż ten dopuszczalny dla pomieszczeń szpitalnych w tym sal operacyjnych.

The study was aimed at evaluating microbial contamination on the premises of the sewage treatment plant by determining the concentrations of selected groups of airborne microorganisms. Another objective was to determine the antibiotic sensitivity patterns of isolated strains of staphylococci. The research was conducted in a seasonal cycle, by the impaction method using Merck MAS-100 air sampler. Samples were collected at six sites, each representing a different stage of sewage treatment. The susceptibility of isolated staphylococci was assessed with the disc-diffusion method, following the recommendations of the EUCAST. The results indicate that the microbial population in the air of the investigated area was dominated by mold fungi, whose highest average concentration was recorded at site IV located near the final clarifier (7672 CFU•m-3). Heterotrophic bacteria and mannitol-positive staphylococci were the most numerous at locations where sewage undergoes primary treatment. In each subseuqent stage the number of microorganisms emitted into the air from the sewage was lower. Antibiograms show that more than 50% of Staphylococcus spp. exhibited resistance to penicillin and 20% to rifampicin. In addition, 90% of the analyzed strains were sensitive to other antibiotics. The fungal community included the following genera: Cladosporium, Fusarium, Alternaria, Penicillium, Aspergillus, Aureobasidium, and Acremonium.The highest air contamination with all studied groups of microorganisms was recorded at the locations where mechanical sewage treatment was performed. During the subsequent stages lower numbers of heterotrophic bacteria were emitted into the air. The air in the investigated sewage treatment plant did not contain multidrug-resistant staphylococci.
Celem pracy była ocena stopnia mikrobiologicznego zanieczyszczenia powietrza na terenie oczyszczalni ścieków, określonego na podstawie liczebności wybranych grup drobnoustrojów oraz ocena wrażliwości wyizolowanych szczepów gronkowców na wybrane antybiotyki, co pozwoliło określić stopień ich antybiotykooporności. Badania przeprowadzono w cyklu sezonowym, przy użyciu metody zderzeniowej za pomocą próbnika MAS-100 Merck. Próbki pobierane były z 6 stanowisk badawczych zlokalizowanych w miejscach reprezentujących poszczególne etapy oczyszczania ścieków. Lekowrażliwość wyizolowanych gronkowców oceniano metodą dyfuzyjno-krążkową zgodnie z rekomendacjami EUCAST. Analizy wykazały, że wśród mikrobiota powietrza najliczniej występowały grzyby pleśniowe osiągając maksimum liczebności na stanowisku IV zlokalizowanym przy osadniku wtórnym radialnym (7672 CFU•m-3). Bakterie heterotroficzne i gronkowce mannitolododatnie najliczniej występowały w miejscach wstępnego etapu oczyszczania ścieków. Wraz z zaawansowaniem procesów oczyszczania, ścieki emitowały do powietrza atmosferycznego coraz mniejszą ilość mikroorganizmów. Na podstawie antybiogramów stwierdzono, że ponad 50% badanych szczepów Staphylococcus spp. wykazywała oporność wobec penicyliny i 20% wobec rifampicyny, natomiast 90% analizowanych szczepów było wrażliwych na pozostałe antybiotyki. Wśród grzybów pleśniowych w powietrzu na terenie oczyszczalni ścieków odnotowano grzyby z rodzaju: Cladosporium, Fusarium, Alternaria, Penicillium, Aspergillus, Aureobasidium i Acremonium. Największym zanieczyszczeniem powietrza, w przypadku wszystkich badanych grup mikroorganizmów, charakteryzowały się stanowiska zlokalizowane w miejscach odpowiedzialnych za część mechaniczną procesu oczyszczania ścieków. Wraz z zaawansowaniem procesów oczyszczania, ścieki emitowały do powietrza atmosferycznego coraz mniejszą ilość bakterii heterotroficznych. Na terenie oczyszczalni ścieków nie stwierdzono rozprzestrzeniania się szczepów gronkowców wielolekoopornych.

Opisano problemy uznaniowości „ocen” wyrobów azbestowych według obowiązujących w Polsce przepisów i konsekwencje złych decyzji postępowania z nimi. Problem ten jest ważny, zwłaszcza wobec ocenianych materiałów z azbestem umiejscowionych w dużych obiektach, fabrykach, albo instalacjach. Oceny materiałów w takich lokalizacjach wymagają dodatkowych badań i weryfikacji.
The problems with “discretionary estimations” of asbestos in the existing regulations in Poland, and the consequences of wrong usage decisions have been described. This problem seems to be important, especially when estimated materials are situated in buildings, big factories or installations. Additional research works and verifications are required in such localizations.

Opis:
Azbest jest toksycznym minerałem, który powoduje wyniszczające efekty zdrowotne u ludzi. Z powodu jego toksyczności konieczne jest posiadanie skutecznych metod do wykrywania i kwantyfikacji azbestu w środowisku. Przez lata opracowano wiele metod, jednak każda z tych metod ma swoje mocne i słabe strony. Publikacja przedstawia kompleksową metodę kontroli stężeń struktur azbestowych w powietrzu. Metoda zawiera procedury: lokalizacji punktów pobierania próbek, pobierania próbek z powietrza, przygotowania próbek do analizy, identyfikacji struktur na podstawie cech morfologicznych, chemicznych, strukturalnych, zliczania struktur w próbce i wyznaczania stężenia struktur azbestowych w powietrzu.
Asbestos is a toxic mineral known to produce debilitating health effects in humans. Because of its toxicity, it is necessary to have effective methods to detect asbestos in the environment. Over the years, a number of methods have been developed, but each method has its own strengths and weaknesses. The paper presents the composite method for the control of concentrations of asbestos structures in the air. The method involves the following procedures: location of sample collection points, collection of air samples, preparation of samples for analysis, identification of structures based on morphological, chemical and structural features, counting of asbestos structures in the sample and determination of concentrations of asbestos structures in the air.

Opis:
The project listed in the acknowledgment focused on monitoring the occurrence of various fungus genera within building constructions of residential, non-residential and historic buildings. Fungoid organisms found on indoor surface of building constructions are a serious aesthetic and constructional/structural disadvantage with enormous impact on the interior environment of exploitable space. They can be found not only in rooms of old buildings, but also in newly built or reconstructed areas, where one would not expect them. Greater amounts of fungoid organisms occurring in artificial environments are harmful to humans. Therefore professional information provided to the public concerning their harmful impact not only on construction materials, but also on human health is very necessary.
Celem projektu jest monitorowanie występowania różnych rodzajów grzybów wewnątrz konstrukcji budynków mieszkalnych, niemieszkalnych oraz zabytkowych. Grzyby znajdowane na wewnętrznej powierzchni konstrukcji budowlanych w swojej najprostszej postaci jako pleśń są poważną estetyczną i konstrukcyjno-strukturalną wadą z ogromnym wpływem na jakość środowiska wnętrz. Można je znaleźć nie tylko w pomieszczeniach starych budynków, ale również w nowo budowanych lub przebudowywanych obiektach, gdzie nie powinny występować. Duża ilość grzybów obserwowana w sztucznie stworzonym środowisku w pomieszczeniach jest szkodliwa dla ludzi. Dlatego też profesjonalne informacje podane do publicznej wiadomości, dotyczące ich szkodliwego wpływu nie tylko na materiały budowlane, ale także na zdrowie ludzi, są bardzo potrzebne.

Opis:
Exposure to bioaerosols at various stages of waste management system (collection, transfer and disposal) has been evaluated by recording of the bacterial and fungal concentrations in the air around these facilities. Regardless of the season, the total bacteria and total fungi were detected for all sampies, whereas the fungal genera were not. The bioaerosol concentrations measured in the waste collection bins were significantly higher than those of the transfer station and landfill site. The mean microbial concentrations at wastes container bins and in-operation trench exceeded the Iran outdoor bioaerosol guidelines (850 CFU/m3), thus suggesting the need for remedial action regarding microorganisms, in order to reduce the exposure at the wastes management system.
